I'm a regular at the caribou coffee in the same lot as the ice cream shop. Every time I try to sit outside at the Caribou Coffee tables- they are ALWAYS covered in melted ice cream. Why does this ice cream shop never clean up after the messy guests?? The walkway is also covered and sticky as well! It's not the caribou baristas jobs to clean up after the people from the ice cream shop. Never been to any of the GOC locations. Decided to stop by this one on a Sunday afternoon. The first thing I noticed was the floor was really gross, definitely haven't been mopped in a minute. Then the ice cream display/coolers looked a bit dirty as well and had a bit of condensation leaking inside over the ice cream. These things turned my mom off from trying anything. I decided to still give it a try. I got the Strawberry cheesecake ice cream in a sugar cone. It was a miss. Was expecting more of a strawberry flavor to be present and it wasn't. Honestly can't explain what it tasted like but wasn't my favorite. They do give a decent amount of ice cream for the price. They have parking around the back shared with caribou. No seating inside but a table outside and a few over at caribou outside. They also told us about the time President Obama visited and what her ordered so that was cool. I've had grand old creamery at their St Paul location before and was excited to see another one near Lake Nokomis. This one's a lot smaller, only has one patio table for guests, and the line can get kind of long, but it's all pretty worth it if you're craving ice cream. I personally don't think their ice cream quality itself or flavors stand out to me, but for $8 their 4 flavor waffle bowl is pretty value and it's the perfect sharing size for 2-3 people. I also appreciate that you can get 2 big scoops for ~7 dollars and 5 mini scoops for 8 if you'd like to try a bunch of flavors! I go to the Caribou next door every evening and the smell of waffle cones finally got me to head into the GOC. I got the marshmallow man and the chocolate fudge brownie ice cream. It was good, but honestly not much different than what I can get at the grocery store. The biggest problem was the waffle cup. It tasted a little burnt, but worse than that it was like they forgot to put sugar in the waffle mixture. The bowl was crumbly and almost had a sand like texture when I ate it. I was sad. At least this trip will serve as a reminder when I'm smelling the waffles baking next time I'm at Caribou. It's also very expensive. Single scoop waffle cone is $6.50. My partner and I are from California, and whenever we come to MN to visit family, we always are sure to make a stop at Grand Ole Creamery! Our go to order is the birthday cake ice cream. I feel like most cake batter ice cream flavors I've had are overwhelmingly sweet and tend to leave a saccharine mouth feel, but this ice cream is so decadent and creamy without coating your throat in sugar. The sprinkles and chunks of angel food cake swirled throughout the dessert remind me of this Pillsbury cake ice cream flavour my mom used to buy for me when I was a kid. We stopped by the Creamery on our way home and boy am I glad we did. I got the Butter Pecan and Coconut chip, and the ice was creamy and tasty. The best part is that there were no bad nuts in the ice cream, I hate when i bite into a nut that is obviously past it's prime. Everyone in my group all agreed that it was some of the best ice cream they've had. The major downside, to me anyway, is that they didn't have any waffle cones, so I ended up with the boring old cake cone, so that was kind of a let down, otherwise I would have given 5 stars. TL:DR Ice cream usually really good, but employee arrogant and and not well trained. The ice cream at Grand Ole Creamery is usually excellent and I have been a customer at their St. Paul location since 1994 and was an employee from 2006-2010 and I made the ice cream too. This rating is based on my last several experiences ordering quarts to go and in particular my experience last night with a particular employee. I ordered five quarts to go. On the first quart a male employee, with a single dangling feather earing on his left side, who was "packing" the quart of Cookie Monster took large chunks from the 2.5 gallon bucket and lightly pressed them into the quart container. This left large air pockets in the quart. I asked the employee to pack it down and let him know that I used to work there so I know what I am asking. His response was "It's full to the top, when the ice cream is this soft it doesn't need to be packed down. Don't worry." This is quite a level of arrogance to treat any customer who is paying $11/quart let alone someone who knows for sure that they are being ripped off by this employee's poor training/refusal to do their job correctly. A different employee was packing the black hills gold quart and was doing a much more thorough job. The resulting weights for each quart are in the photos. The correctly packed container had 949g the poorly packed had 668g, 30% less. The second part of this review has to do with the consistency of the flavors that have mix-ins (cookies, cookie dough pieces, coconut, chocolate chips, pralines etc.). Recently, the 2.5 gallon buckets have not had the mix-ins adequately stirred in. This results in the top of the pails not having any of the mix-ins and they all drop to the bottom of the container. This has been the case for the last two months or so. This is the fault of whoever is making the ice cream. Poor training or sloth can both be culprits. Please improve GOC! read more

They have a decent amount of tables for outside seating which is nice for sunny days. They offer unique flavors such as Thai Tea and Pumpkin Pie, along with your more traditional flavors. You can get waffle cones, cups, shakes, and additional mix ins. I personally like the option to get a split scoop which means you can order two flavors while still enjoying a single scoop (by single scoop Grand Ole Creamery actually means like 3 scoops). It's a bit on the pricier side, but it's good quality ice cream and it's a large serving, so I don't mind splurging a little on the special treat. If your enjoying the lake do stop! I was happy to find that Grand Ole Creamery was still open amidst the closings of other nearby seasonal ice cream shops. The ice cream here is really amazing but portion sizes are overwhelmingly large. Regardless, it's a fun little shop to visit and grab a cone. There are a lot of different choices for flavors and they're definitely not boring ones. It was tough to choose. I ended up with Marshmallow Man and loved it! There were little marshmallows hidden inside. The texture of the ice cream was perfect and creamy. It's a shame that this place is only open seasonally because it's so good and should be open all year. Who cares if temperatures are freezing outside? It's also a bit smaller than the other shop, and only has outdoor seating, which I can assume becomes problematic during the winter. That being said, this does still have amazing ice cream. My recommendation is just getting a single scoop on a waffle cone, I believe it's $6.50 for that, tax included. Try as many flavors as you like! The staff is also very friendly. We had a couple people helping us because it was slow, and they were willing to accommodate us however we wanted. Like I said in my other review, it's the best quality ice cream for its price in the Twin cities thus far. Parking was kind of a challenge, just because it is a small lot off of a busy street. Ice cream and I have been homies since the jump, and I love the fact that GOC (which sounds like a Wu-Tang Clan member, BTW) can spread its gospel in the Nokomis hood (one I used to live in). It's a huge win for its residents. So luckily, when my brother came into town a couple weekends ago, I FINALLY got to check this location out. I. FOOD Unfortunately, I couldn't try all the flavors on the menu, but I did love my Cookies & Cream. It reminded me of my childhood, when I used to have midnight ice cream rendezvous at the fridge, when my parents would be asleep. They could never figure out why I was so chubby. #ilovetoeaticecreamproblems This is also a good thing, BTW. I love their Cookies & Cream and appreciate the fact that their cream is fresh and smooth. My only critique is that it's slightly grainy. II. SERVICE Like any ice cream shop in the summer, a couple high school kids staffed this one. And despite their young ages, they were uber professional and fast. No qualms here. III. DÉCOR/ ATMOSPHERE There's a parking lot in the back, and the main ordering space is quite small. If you drop by during peak hours, you'll likely meet a line. Most patrons eat on their medium sized patio (15-25 people maybe?), for what that's worth. You can also take advantage of the scenery around you and stroll around and through Lake Nokomis and its park, respectively. IV. PRICES I wish I kept my receipt, but I remember buying a pint of ice cream and two waffle cones with one scoop (which is really two scoops) for about $17. I think the pint was closer to $10. And if you didn't know, the former President Obama visited the original location in St. Paul. If Obama liked it then it must be good, right? Love the smell of the waffle cones as soon as I stepped into the shop. We got a single split cone with Coffee Break (I get this every time) + Cookie Monster, and a banana split. Single split cone is only $1 more than the single scoop but allows you to try two different flavors. For the banana split, you get to pick three flavors and three free toppings.
