This is just in our check in experience on Saturday, 10/19/19. First of all, we had to wait in line on a Saturday night and the desk clerk was downright rude. She could have easily called for back up help but didn't want to disturb her co worker who later resurfaced with a fast food drink in hand. No comment. We stayed at the Grand Colonial this weekend and it could not have been better! It's an older hotel but it has been updated throughout beautifully. The staff is all so helpful as well. We stayed in an ocean view king room with an amazing view. We dined at their on site restaurant, Nine Ten and the food was amazing! We highly recommend the pork belly appetizer and the donuts for dessert. We ended up going back for dinner a second night because we enjoyed it so much. We also planned on using the Grand Colonial for our wedding hotel block but due to COVID, we were forced to cancel our big wedding. Leo Lopez, the director of sales, helped us come up with an option that worked for us as well as the hotel. We are so thankful for his responsiveness and willingness to accommodate our needs. This is our second time staying at the Grand Colonial and we know it will not be our last! read more

We drove down from L.A. to celebrate my birthday and our anniversary. Couldn't have gone to a better place. Right where the La Jolla action is, surrounded by very nice restaurants and cafés, easy walk to the beaches. The room was extremely nice and clean, the bathroom was spacious with a great shower. But, best of all, the people need extra mention. Everyone went out of their way to assist us. We needed the small room refrigerator to be colder for our champaign. The woman helping us got us a super cold icebox and we were very happy about that. We will be back! read more

Wish I could give 6 stars! I stayed at grande colonial this past weekend to celebrate my birthday and it was everything I was hoping it would be and more. The location could not be more perfect, just a block away from the beach and surrounded by a bunch of amazing shops and restaurants. I only ubered to and from the airport, otherwise I was able to walk everywhere else or use the bikes the hotel provides for free. The baskets on the bike are a great touch, I was able to throw a towel in and just cruise around for the day. The restaurant attached to the hotel is fabulous. I ordered room service from there and have to say it was probably the best meal I had during this trip (which says a lot because all the food I had was amazing). What really made this stay extra perfect was the amazing staff and comfy beds. I was a little needy this trip as I needed extra linens several times and took out bikes each day, but the staff was always on point and never made it seem as if I was a bother. The beds here are probably the comfiest hotel beds I've ever slept in and I travel often! I felt like a queen my entire trip and the grande colonial played a big part in that. We were planning to stay at the la Valencia for about $550+ a night and after reading "not so great reviews" and not worth the money, someone said save $$ and stay down the street at the Grand Colonial - same great location, historic vibe and great service for less! They were right!!! So glad we switched last minute. Paid $279 for our room (#517 - no ocean view but gorgeous, spacious and we were ok with the night life on prospect street - felt like NYC a little. This Hotel actually stated that it does not Have Bedbugs. After I was bitten over 50 times and showed them the welts did the hotel manager, Kim Avant and Cassie, a day manager said "This never happened before". I actually saw the bedbugs on the hotel pillow, and the hotel manager, Kim Avant, denied the whole thing. Unbelievable. But true. I travel for a living for 25 years. I stay in the Ritz Carlton worldwide regularly and the Sheridan--Holiday Inn hotels. I have NEVER EVER been bitten by bedbugs. THE GRANDE COLONIAL INN in La Jolla, California has bedbugs. Not 1, not 2, but 3 their coffee makers in the room exploded both days before breakfast. I only stayed 2 nights. ONE NIGHT COSTS $487. Frankly, is a guest entitled to a clean bedroom????? Exceeds expectations. 7 out of 5. After our air bnb fell through due to a bait and switch scam, we were scrambling to find last minute lodging. With two kids and a long drive, we were stressed, angry (at the air bnb host who ghosted us), and desperate. We called here because we stayed here in the past and really liked it. This is a perfectly lovely place to stay in La Jolla. We probably won't stay at the Grande Colonial again, because presently, our needs lean more towards an Airbnb. We have been to La Jolla so many times, we are no longer tourists. Certainly, we're not residents, but we're kind of in between a tourist and a resident. An Airbnb can bridge that gap. Our room at the Grande Colonial had views of the ocean, an updated and wonderful bathroom, and a comfortable bed. A refrigerator in the room was perfect for leftovers. There is a Keurig Coffee Machine, ample outlets, and plush towels. Even housekeeping was efficient and good. Include room service from Nine-Ten, and the Grande Colonial is certainly five star material. In the past, we always stayed at the Scripps Inn, but opted for the Grande Colonial because of the lack of air-conditioning at Scripps. However, the location of Scripps can't be beat, across the street from the ocean, and the sound of the waves at night is enchanting. The rooms, service, and amenities at the Grande Colonial are infinitely superior, but the quiet and soothing location of Scripps is special. It's all a matter of taste, but the Grande Colonial is a superior hostelry. read more

Our annual Christmas party was held here. I decided to get a room so I could relax while I was getting ready and not have to worry about going home to North County then coming back to La Jolla. It was a great call on my part (if I do say so myself!!!) I was upgraded to an Ocean view and I had a beautiful view of sunset as well as sunrise. My room was quant... plenty of room to shower and get ready... I was glad It was only myself and that I wasn't sharing a room! The venue was very nice- great appetizers and I have to say I think there could have been more choices at the bar...... it was very limited.... but, hey... I had my boyfriend Jack in my room saving the fireball!!!! ;-) The dinner was amazing and everyone really seemed to enjoy their choices. I had Filet Mignon. The room we sat in was elegant and quant. Afterwards quite a few of us moved into the bar area to finish off the evening! OOH my! My only complaint..... The robes in the room were definitely for petite people.... I don't think they would fit many of the guests I saw...... read more

My friend and I came from separate cities to reconnect for a few days and Grande Colonial is the perfect place to stay. We stayed in the Little Hotel and loved the kitchenette, which the amazing housekeeping staff refilled with free snacks and water/sodas each day. All the staff are amazingly friendly and helpful. The seal beach is only a block away and we saw multiple mamas and babies playing in the water. There is a plethora of excellent dining within walking distance, and we loved the hotel pool and the Little Hotel's rooftop seating area. I would go back there in a heartbeat! read more

She remembered me when I checked in! The room was beautiful, clean spacious, and all the amenities one could hope for. I love the history and classic look of the hotel. The view was spectacular of the ocean. The staff was warm and friendly. The grounds were meticulously maintained. This place is in the center of town. Walking distance to everything! It is connected to Nine Ten restaurant which is an amazing restaurant. My boyfriend and I shared a 5 course pairing meal with wine and it was unbelievable! When we first arrived we wanted a hotel room with a fireplace. The only problem was we couldn't get our fireplace to work but they then sent Maintance and worked on it for a while. Since that fireplaces didn't work they upgraded us to a suite with another place that worked! Gave us a complimentary bottle of wine and was so nice to us on our weekend there. Upon arrival we had a great impression we paid almost $600 for a double bed with ocean view. I knew it was a little expensive but knew we were also next to the beach. It all took a turn when we had to walk through the bar area where people were eating and drinking then in a door that was right next to the kitchen to walk up one flight of stairs. I was ok with it till we got to the room and I realized I way over paid the paint was cracking on the walls and you could tell it had been painted over many many times. The room was probably smaller than any "regular hotel". We accepted the condition knowing we would only be there one night. We were excited to eat at the restaurant downstairs but we were told no tables were available "sorry" I mean if you need to make reservations why not say that at the time you book your room. We went to a fabulous restaurant down the road that took great care of us. Now to the worst part of the stay. I woke up with a SPIDER IN MY BED!!!! I took video i will attach...also the coffee was all gross with old creamer. When I expressed my concern all the said was next time make a reservation... nothing about the spider or coffee....So unless this is the kind of stay you want I would recommend looking for another place read more

My boyfriend and I had a wonderful stay here at the Grande Colonial. The hotel staff was extremely friendly and accommodating. We loved that we can correspond with the front desk by text message, they would text in the evening to remind us to order our breakfast for the morning and ask if we needed anything in our room. The hotel room was lovely and we had a nice view of the ocean. The shores of La Jolla were so beautiful to stay by and we woke up each morning to the sounds of crashing waves. Also tons of stores and food within walking distance to us. The building has a wonderful charm to it and a vintage feel with modern amenities ! Staying all week more to come. Night 1 strike 1 15 minute wake up call? When we booked made a point to ask about construction at the hotel was assured it was minimal inside remodeling. Across the wayWe were Woken up this morning to a semi trailer dropping off a construction dumpster for 15 minutes back up sensors blaring into our room construction workers talking it up. Non of which was taking place indoors. Day 3 Strike 2 Found out the hard way the pool is not heated during the week. Felt like 50 degree water. Day 4 Gardner woke us up at 7:00 am lasted 30 minutes I honestly don't get this place we are paying how much ?? read more

Wife and I checked into the Grande Colonia as they were hosting my relatives wedding this past weekend. There was a mix up early when we checked in which caused us to stay in a lower-tier room. However, once we brought it to the hotels attention they found the correct room and moved us the following day after apologizing for the inconvenience. The good part was they were able to check us in a bit earlier than advertised. The restaurant Nine-Ten catered the wedding we attended and their food was decent enough. They valet was on time professional and also helped with baggage whenever needed. Our room as facing the ocean and had an outstanding view. This is a historic location and older hotel and some of things were notably missing for this reason. The floors are hard and they didn't have any slippers available. Also I just comment about the size of the showers. The showers were in the small side and the glass covering the shower only covers half of the shower which allows for water to drip down causing a slip and fall hazard and allowing cold air to brush against your backside depending on how you are facing the shower. Room service did a great job kept our room nice and tidy. Overall this was an okay experience just note you are paying for the view and proximity to the ocean. This location is near a strip mall with a lot of tourist areas and great restaurants. If you stay here I recommend you check out the Manhattan of La Jolla and excellent food place and the Outpost which for souvenirs. Both are within walking distance! Also there is a daily hospitality charge of $45 which de-incentivizes tipping. Although I am sure they put that in place after considering the business side economics. read more

This is our 3 night in a row staying. I need to leave this review before our stay is even completed for fear I will get home & get too busy to remember. I saw a couple of reviews before we booked that someone gave a 3.5 rating. That's ridiculous. My husband and I travel a lot and frequent all kinds of hotels. From the moment we got here every person we have come in to contact with that works at this hotel has strived to go above and beyond. So friendly, so genuine & so quick to help with even a tiny request. We Live 12 miles from here and we're attending a weekend wedding. The weather has gotten surprisingly warm here so today we decided to stay 1 more night in the air conditioning. They happily accommodated us. The room is spacious & overlooks the street. It's fun to see what's going on outside. Choose this hotel if you're looking for a pleasant, clean, comfortable lovely La Jolla historic hotel easy walking distance to everything La Jolla has to offer. The rooms are bigger than La Valencia Hotel close by & far less busy busy. Thank you to the Grand Colonial for making us feel so welcome and providing a great experience! Great location! Walking distance to shoreline, shops and restaurants. A con is the parking is street only and there are no spots on the weekend. Full! The hotel does offer a $30 day valet service. (It seems like they have little secret spots they stash the cars.) Another con is no coffee or tea available in the lobby. The desk will give you more pods for your room coffee maker... Last really big con... no mini fridge or micro in the room. If you are only staying the weekend, no biggie. I hear they are remodeling soon. More pro's other than the location would be: friendly staff, pretty room, nice pool with poolside service, fancy restaurant/bar. read more

Nice, Clean, Cozy Hotel! My family recently stayed here for 3 nights while we were visiting San Diego and it ended up being the perfect spot for us! It has a cute victorian look with top service from their staff. Whenever we needed anything they were quick to provide it for us. We even had a beautiful Ocean view from our room, that we were able to also walk down to and enjoy. Bonus, there were lots of restaurants and shops that were right outside and all walking distance. My son loved eating at "The Spot". Our family will definitely be staying here again. read more

You can't beat the location, that's for sure. Walk anywhere in La Jolla: beach, shops, restaurants, neighborhoods, it's all accessible from the hotel's front door. But that was really the only major selling point (beside how helpful everyone was, I mean, and super comfortable beds). The room was...a room. OK, with older carpet and appointments, and cheap-ish furnishings. The windows are leaky and the street below our room could be heard in our room at times. The $199 price tag - plus tax and $30 parking until we found space on the street - doesn't include any sort of breakfast and while the room had a Keurig, the cream/sugar/etc. were all the cheapest possible and made for lousy morning coffee. Took off one star as I don't think our room had, "expansive ocean view" see picture. Also be aware the mini-fridge is more a cooler and not safe for medications etc. Restaurant was disappointing for breakfast. Pretty patio closed for private group and food mediocre. My husband and I stayed at this hotel for 2 nights. We did need to move rooms once due to noise. The rooms were spacious. I also do need to mention that the hotel was accommodating in allowing us to change our reservation dates prior to our visit which was nice. But what was absolutely inexcusable were the towels. All towels had the absorptive capability of a rubber mat and made the shower expense quite unpleasant. We honestly don't even know what was done to these towels to make them quite so bad. I think this is a basic thing that a hotel should really get right. It was bad. read more

I had a really weird experience with this organization in which they requested specific information on my service animal which is illegal and then charged me a $100 "pet fee" which is also illegal. I will be bringing this to the attention to the various ADA Rights organizations as well as my attorney in an effort to file a claim. They did not discuss the issue with me, just snuck it onto my credit card dubiously. Not recommended you stay here as they are people with low integrity. read more

We are staying at the colonial and so far happy with the staff on duty. We checked in late at night around 930 and found our room to be not clean. There was hair all over the bedsheets and on the nightstand and once I called the manager on duty, Isabel came promptly. She actually got there before housekeeping and cleaned up and added breakfast for us. She was sweet and kind and I was very impressed by her work ethic. Later on in our stay I asked for housekeeping to come a second time around after 5pm and Jorge was pleasant and very thorough. Not world class. The cleanliness of this particular hotel was unimpressive, there was actual dirt and crumbs where the coffee set up was. No breakfast or coffee options past 10am. Staff was rude and uninterested in clientele. It's always bizarre to me that people working for minimum wage will look down on you if you don't look a certain way. Room coffee was cheap and the ice was all the way in the basement, also no fridge in the room.. I've stayed at far better hotels for way less money. read more

I'm a long time resident of La Jolla. I stopped in for cocktails with out of town visitors for after dinner cocktails. We were seated in the living room lounge area just outside the bar. We were ignored by the wait staff until I approached the bartender to order my drinks which arrived slowly. We weren't approached for another round. I spoke with a young woman who purportedly was the "manager" who showed no concern or empathy other than comping the one round of drinks. I recommend the beautiful lounge at the La Valencia to entertain guests. The Manager and I spoke who apologized and said he would investigate the matter. I'm in the restaurant business and grew up in the business. Common hospitality practices would have included a comped meal and or drinks. The valet was inconsiderate and wouldn't provide his name. Treat yourself. Ask for the King Suite in The Little Hotel by the Sea. Open the French doors to the tiny balcony for a view straight to the ocean. Things we loved: the small but lovely pool, the rooftop deck, the food at 910, nice linens, great pillows, super close to coffee shops, restaurants, galleries. Above all, the staff is wonderful. Everyone from the front desk to the multi-tasking housemen was delightful to say the least. The vintage buildings, elevators and architectural detail were the icing on the cake. I'm not saying don't stay here, but I will give you an honest review of my stay. I checked in for one night this Wednesday as I wanted a place somewhat near UCSD. The idea this was near the ocean was great, which it is, but due to flight delays, I arrived much later than I wanted to. I was very excited to have my first night away from my baby and me-time. I was given a King on a high floor, which at this time is the third. The fourth and fifth floors are undergoing renovations. I was assured renovations started after 9:00A. Also, I got a "partial ocean" view, which honestly means that if you look outside your window, you'll see two strips of the ocean between buildings - nothing worth paying extra for. I went up to my room (308) and it was okay. Some parts obviously need redoing, such as stains on the furniture, the shower head having green on it, the chips and scratches on the fixtures, etc. But for one night, it wasn't make-it-or-break-it for me. The bed is also fairly close to the door, and the room was adjoined. But the front desk told me no one was next to me and on a Wednesday in the winter, the hotel wasn't that populated, so although you can easily hear outside your door and it will vibrate based on other activity in the hall, it wasn't an issue at night. Also, I was assured in advance twice there would be a fridge, both by the manager via email and from the front desk. There was no fridge in my room but after a call, they brought it up within ten minutes. It was a small, beaten up fridge, but it did the trick. So, I went out to George's for dinner, as most boutiques and restaurants are within walking distance. Came back, and had a nice evening to myself before passing out. I had plenty of room and the toiletry selection was good. Most places don't offer mouthwash in advance, but this hotel does. The bed was comfortable and I fell asleep easily. Now, here's where the major unpleasantness hits. Slightly before 7a, I hear moderate construction sounds - light pounding, sawing, moving around heavy things. Yes, approximately 6:45a glancing at the clock. My first night to sleep in was cut short due to the eagerness of the construction crew. I hastily called the front desk who said they'll look into it. I smashed a pillow over my head and tried to sleep but the noise intermittently carried on. I called again at 7a and I'm greeted with another apology. However, the noise still continues. Around 7:15a I call again and I'm transferred to the manager. She informs me the sound is from another wing and maybe I'm just hearing the elevator. I said this is not the case. I know the difference of an elevator versus hammering. She said she will investigate. About ten minutes later I receive a callback. She apologies and said that someone was indeed working above me and as a make good they adjusted my bill and offered me free breakfast at the restaurant (which was good), and that since my company is paying for this stay, should I chose to stay here again in the future they'll work with me. These are very nice condolences. The noise never disappeared and the sound grew louder as 9a approached to full hammering sounds as the workers pressed on with their jobs. So if you do stay here, request a ground floor, away from the construction. Also, I can't comment on the person who wrote about ghosts. That review makes them sound insane. read more

This hotel is in an awesome location! It's a short walk to shopping in one direction and the cove/beach in the other. Our room, 231, was detached from the main hotel, down a little hill, and was attached 3 other rooms. I was surprised to find that it had a kitchenette, refrigerator, couch, and complementary snacks and drinks! It was like staying in a cozy studio apartment. We also had access to a small roof deck and a common area shared with the other 3 suites. We got a good rate and a great nights sleep. So, we didn't mind that we did get the full "Grande Colonial" feel as it would have been out of the way to go through the lobby or pool areas to get to our room. Suite 231 would be ideal for people traveling with children and folks like us who liked having a large, functional space. read more

My fiancé and I needed to get out of the house and shake the quarantine dust off. Grande Colonial looked great over the internet so we crossed our fingers and booked two nights. For as fancy as this hotel is, they have a very warm, southern type of hospitality behind their customer service. The rooms are very clean, beds super comfy, we had a room with the view of downtown, we were going to ask to switch to an Oceanview for the second night, but we had so much fun people watching from our windows that we cancelled that idea. They offer free bike rentals for their customers, we rented them both days, so it was well worth it to pay for the over night parking and just cruise all over town with out parking issues. Pool area is super chill, very clean, and nice and warm. Enjoy. read more

The Grande Colonial is a sweet hotel with an incredible amount of history located in downtown La Jolla. If you are staying in the San Diego area I can't imagine a better location in close proximity to beaches, restaurants, shopping and more. The hotel itself is classic yet modern with a nice restaurant that garners plenty of local accolades. The pool is a small, circular one that isn't more than 3-4 feet deep but does provide respite from salt water if you've been at the beach all day. All in all, I'd recommend staying at the Grande Colonial for a classic, upscale experience in the heart of La Jolla. Nice spot! Grande Colonial is a charming boutique hotel in La Jolla. It is right up the hill from Scripts Park, La Jolla Cove, the "Children's Pool"(resting seals) and close to shops and restaurants. The hotel offers both standard rooms and suites. We had a standard room with a street view, which accommodated us just fine. Because we had our toddler with us, we thought of upgrading to a suite for the kitchenette, but we were able to request a microwave and small refrigerator for our room. I also asked for a crib, which was actually nice and clean, and in good shape. I'm always wary about hotel cribs, but my child was fairly comfortable sleeping in this one. The room and bathroom are on the small side, and with all the extras in our room it was a bit cramped. We made it work though. The room was very clean and well maintained. I liked how the bathroom had a window but the shower head was located a foot below where it should be. So taking a shower was a bit awkward. The front desk and doormen were very friendly and professional. Valet parking cost $25/night but we were able to find free street parking. Across the street it's 2hr parking 8am-6pm, so parking there overnight is possible. Overall, we had a nice experience at this hotel. I would recommend to couples or for families with one child. If you have more than one child, the suites are probably the way to go. read more

I booked a trip with a group of folks. Perhaps they buttered me up with a great rate and a nice room because I was the organizer, but DAMN this hotel was a palace of dreams. For those who think that Heaven is like a big hotel in the sky, let me tell you that I sure hope it's like this one. Built as one of the grand hotels in the 1920's, this place just oozes with history and architectural charm. I am a huge fan of the Arts and Crafts movement of the era, so I fell in love with the place from the get-go. But if you read the history of the hotel, you'll find that they continue to pour money into the place and have had major renovations within the past few years. Clean, well-maintained rooms. Spotless. Comfortable beds. And that fresh ocean air at a great temperature. Just open a window and soak up the atmosphere. Attentive, friendly staff. An intimate highly-touted restaurant. And you can walk to just about everywhere (beach, shops, restaurants). They purchased 2 little hotels next door and have made it part of the property. The Garden Suites and the Hotel by the Sea. We live here in SD and hosted our daughter's wedding at La Valencia. One of our wedding blocks for guests was at the Grande Colonial. After reading the online reviews, we were confident that our guests would have a wonderful stay. Unfortunately, of the 3 hotels we referred our guests to, this is the only one we received complaints about. The consistent complaints were that the staff was not hospitable or friendly in the least. I booked a room for my parents and they were not made to feel as "valued guests" whatsoever. They are in their 70's and I assured them that they could ask to be transported to the wedding events via the golf cart or the "London Cab"; yet they were told "no" every time they asked. The coffee maker didn't work so they had to purchase room service every day. Valet attendants were also very unfriendly. Ironically, the only staff member that was kind to them was when they checked out... an hour before we received the auto email asking us to review their stay. read more

The Little Hotel by the Sea is little in name only. It is part of the Grande Colonial hotel in a separate building and has 8 awesome suites, including a "honeymoon suite" popular with newlyweds. The suites are all a little different in layout but each one is beautiful. The Little Hotel has a sales manager who will work with people planning special events at the Grand Colonial . If you are having a destination La Jolla wedding either at the Grande Colonial or nearby and are looking for a fabulous place to stay with family and friends--this it it! Additionally, it is very easy to walk one block down to La Jolla Cove and take some great pictures with the scenic Pacific and coastline as a backdrop. According to www.historichotels.org, in 2007, the completion of an $8 million historical restoration project of the Little Hotel by the Sea was completed adding 18 new suites to the Grand Colonial's room inventory. "The eight-suite Little Hotel by the Sea and the ten-suite Garden Terraces had operated as residential apartment complexes for the past 30 years and had now been restored to their original glory for the community to enjoy for years to come. To recognize their historical significance in the development of La Jolla, both properties were designated as historic sites in 1984 and 1990 respectively." There are two significant elements of the Little Hotel by the Sea including the restoration of the building's rooftop loft and deck, and restoration of the 1929 Baker & Sons elevator. The Historic Hotels website said that "the rooftop is now used as a guest library and executive board room, as well as an outdoor terrace providing panoramic views of the Pacific. The Baker & Sons elevator, which has been restored to full operation, is a four-passenger, solid-mahogany elevator housed in a steel tower. Soon after it was added to the hotel back in 1929, it became recognized as the "The Smallest Hotel in the World with an Elevator." How quaint and awesome is this?
