My husband and I spent Labor Day weekend at the Grande Colonial, and it turned out to be a lovely little retreat with all the walkability and laid-back coastal vibe we were hoping for. The location couldn't be better -- right in the heart of La Jolla Village, surrounded by cafés, restaurants, bars, shops, and of course the beach. I recommend stopping by Parakeet Café for breakfast; their croissant sandwich and matcha latte are absolutely delicious, and it's just a short, pleasant walk from the hotel. The hotel itself has that classic European elegance. You can sense its history in the lobby, the wood trim, and the timeless décor that complements the building's architecture. It's charming rather than gaudy, and while some parts could use a refresh, everything was clean and well maintained. Being close to the ocean made the evenings cool and breezy, which was a welcome change from the city heat. The elevator is old and slow, which adds to the hotel's historic character but may test your patience if you're in a rush. We loved being able to wander down to see the sea lions, and one afternoon we even went snorkeling with them -- an unforgettable experience. Back at the hotel, they provided beach towels and bike rentals so we could easily ride down the coast path. The valet team was friendly, prompt, and professional, ensuring that arrivals and departures were effortless. As far as our room, it was spacious, and while not the prettiest, it had a soft bed that made for a restful night's sleep. It also included a small fridge, perfect for storing leftover food. They also had a coffee maker with a basket stocked with complimentary water, soft drinks, and a few thoughtful snacks -- a small but appreciated detail that made our stay feel more personal. We also had dinner at the hotel's restaurant, NINE-TEN Restaurant & Bar, which was excellent: a well-rounded menu, attentive service, and a warm, sophisticated but chill atmosphere that fit the La Jolla scene perfectly. The area isn't overwhelmingly packed even for a holiday weekend. It's a great spot for people watching, especially with all the outdoor patios along the street where you can sip a glass of wine and take in the views. And if you want to get into central San Diego, it's an easy drive or Uber ride, so you get the best of La Jolla and the bigger city. If you're looking for ultra-modern luxury this might not check every box, but if you want a comfortable, convenient seaside stay with character, this is a very good choice. I'd definitely stay again.

The location of the Grande Colonial Hotel in La Jolla is very convenient to all of the various and sundry highlights in the Village of La Jolla. There are uniformed attendants posted at the front door of the hotel on Prospect Street to assist with the parking of your car as well as with check in into the hotel itself. Just inside the front door, to the right of the lobby, is located the bar. Also in that location is the excellent NineTen Restaurant (named after the address of the hotel--910 Prospect Street). The restaurant has a Michelin reference (not a star) and is recommended for dinner. The lobby is decorated in a very traditional style of furnishings. in addition, there are also beautiful decorations displayed during various holidays throughout the year. Be sure to request a room with a view of the Pacific Ocean.

Enjoying life in room 206. Crystal waters meet horizon, pure bliss from pool to ocean.

Stepping into the Grande Colonial is like entering a refined seaside retreat with a storied past. Built in 1913, this boutique landmark balances old world elegance and modern comfort beautifully. The lobby's arches, crown moldings, and classic European inspired décor immediately set a tone of quiet luxury. We stayed in a room with a pool and peekaboo ocean view, #206, which was spacious, well appointed, and tastefully furnished with warm tones, plush bedding, and modern conveniences, free Wi-Fi, flat-screens, Keurig machine, etc. The location is superb: a short walk to beaches, boutique shops, ocean bluffs, and great restaurants around La Jolla village. The standout for food lovers is Nine-Ten Restaurant & Bar, where we had breakfast. The cuisine is creative, farm-to-table, and the wine list is impressive. For an upscale meal in a comfortable, elegant setting, this is hard to beat. Valet parking adds cost, and there's a resort fee, which some guests found frustrating because it isn't always made transparent in third-party bookings, but I knew it was coming. They also do not have an on-site workout facility, but they do have a relationship with a standalone gym, which is a short walk down the street. Noise can be an issue depending on room location, street noise, or being near service areas or stairs, as reported by my friend. However, room #206 was located in a quiet corner. Overall, the Grande Colonial delivers a mostly delightful stay. If you want historic charm, excellent location, and high-end dining, it's a strong pick. Just check room location, confirm all fees up front.

I stayed here for a work trip and I thought the experience was solid. The lights in the bathroom turned off randomly and the AC was a bit loud, but I enjoyed overall. My room had a fantastic view and the free snacks and sodas were a fun perk! Location was also very convenient.

Jacob the closing bartender makes custom cocktails. They're amazing! Stop by if you're in the area. Nice relaxed vibes inside.

Located in the middle of La Jolla Village. Historic hotel but recently renovated so has all the modern amenities. Very friendly staff, highly informed with good suggestions regarding the nearby restaurants and activities. Snacks and drinks in the room plus fridge. Large walk-in closet with safe. Overall a great place for a weekend getaway.

I stayed here over Thanksgiving and it's just beautiful. It's elegant and beautifully decorated. The staff is so friendly. The TVs are kind of hard to use ... nearly impossible, but that's easy to overlook with all the views and excellent food. I will be back again!

All the employees we encountered during our two days there were very friendly. From Ivy the texting chat, to housekeeping, valet, front desk. We had a ridiculous number of requests (a room upgrade, wine glasses, wine key, bathrobe, slippers, ice and extra bucket, tea, late check-out, etc) to fulfill our needs and each time they were met with kindness and a smile. The hotel itself is a classic traditional style with beautiful details and rich dark wood and marble. It has an upscale feel that makes it fit in nicely. And of course, the location can't be beat. We chose it for the 4-stars and value. We loved our room size and the airy balcony it accompanied with a well operating window that we could use for fresh air and the salty breeze. The mattress and linens were sumptuous and each bed offered several sets of pillows varying in degrees of fluff. We had the wonderful experience of dining at NineTen. Our waiter, Jerard, was fabulous and so knowledgeable about the wines and dishes. He really made them come alive with exciting descriptions. The wine pairings with our duck and salmon were exquisite. Certainly an opportunity not to be passed up while staying there.

This hotel is perfect, and the restaurant is wonderful as well. Amazing location right by the water in La Jolla & the staff is fantastic. I recommend getting an ocean facing room for beautiful views! :)

Update to my review: service was so wonderful! The assistant manager, Ryan, is a gem. After my last review he reached out to us via email to make it right. Who does that???? Someone who has excellent hospitality skills. The front desk ladies were so lovely this go round and very accommodating! The laughed and teased with us and even switched our rooms when it was very noisy! All in all, because of their customer service and the managers caring and follow up we will definitely be using this hotel as our go to place in the future. We are in California about 2 to 3 times a year and we have wedding festivities coming up so we will definitely be using The Grande Colonial for all!!!!

LOVED our room with this amazing view!!

This hotel is my saving grace. I have been a loyal customer for 26 years. This Sunday will be the anniversary of my husband's death. I am a young widow who needed to fall asleep in a place called home. I love this place in every essence of its beautiful walls and extensive view of the ocean. I need to recognize the most amazing employee/ manager ever. Her name is Isabel. She always remembers me and makes me feel special. A few months ago I was studying for my licensing exam. I needed to go to a place for peace and solace. ISABEL WAS MAGNIFICENT. She set up a room away from the noise, arranged a car to take me to the exam, and had other employees check in via text to see if I passed. I was alone without my husband but felt incredibly cared for. After my dinner at Colonial's amazing restaurant, Isabel arranged for a celebratory cake. I was in tears! Thank you Isabel!!!'i

Review of La Valencia Hotel…read more I purchased a day pass here as someone who works in the hospitality industry and is always curious to experience new properties from a guest perspective--and La Valencia absolutely delivered. I arrived pretty early in the morning (optimistically expecting sunshine), but even with the typical coastal overcast, it didn't take away from the experience at all. In fact, I somehow ended up with the pool almost entirely to myself--in the middle of August, which felt like a hidden luxury. The setting is just beautiful. The views, the calm atmosphere, and the overall sense of escape made it easy to settle in and relax. I spent about five hours there and never felt rushed or overlooked. The staff, especially at the cabana bar, were fantastic--attentive, respectful, and genuinely pleasant to interact with. I ordered food and drinks throughout the day, and everything added to the ease and enjoyment of the experience. The only small downside is parking, which can be a bit tricky--but that's pretty standard for La Jolla. Overall, this was an incredible day experience and absolutely worth it. I'd do it again without hesitation.

I paid $500 for the room, arrived around 10 pm and had to check out by 11am, quick $500! There was a $45 resort fee, whatever that means. Still would love to know what that was for. Anyways, the bellhop guys were nice they gave me recommendations for where to eat and also helped carry my suitcase up to my room. The bedroom was small, really small and the view was of a back lot with dumpsters and the side of a building. Sure, the room was hip and funky and cool. The bed was comfortable. The bathroom was small but functional. Listen the room was fine, but for $500...and this was a heavily discounted room because I booked through Hotel Tonight. Anyways, I walked the hotel at night and it was nice because I had the place to myself, the pool is really pretty at night, it's lit up, I recommend walking outside and having a seat on their comfy couches above the pool. In the morning I continued exploring the hotel and when I went to check out the dining room I was receiving unfriendly glances from the hostess or whoever she was. So much so that I stopped and asked if it was okay that I was looking around, to which she replied, "Well are you eating?" I said no and that I was staying here and just wanted to check out the view. I am a pretty average looking chick, was in work out clothes, maybe I didn't fit the high end clientele look and it seemed to bother her. Anyways, the people at the front desk upon check out weren't the friendliest either, seemed annoyed when I asked if they had change for the bellhop. The man at the concierge desk who I believe has a job of making sure everyone in the hotel is happy and having a grand time didn't even acknowledge. me the four or five times I walked past his desk. I felt unwelcome to be honest.

Parking is in a public garage across the street. You pay $25 through an app and use a QR code to enter/exit. The scanner repeatedly failed. We had to get out of the car multiple times on a steep underground incline just to get the gate to open. We kept showing the QR code on our phones and nothing. We tried again and again. This would take 5 minutes every item trying to enter and exit. Finally it would respond. And the people in front of us and behind had the same problem Around 9 PM on a Saturday night (Valentine's Day) the garage gates were closed. The hotel staff should've warned us that parking closes early around here. Several hotel guests were standing outside with us , frustrated and confused. We called and the hotel told us to use an alternate entrance on another street. Once inside there was no way to find your car. You're on a different level having entered in a completely different side and at night. It took 17 minutes walking level to level to find our car. My husband is a Type 1 diabetic, so this stress and exertion became very stressful since his blood sugar started to drop. The microwave in our room also died mid-use, and the hotel had no replacement, which is odd since being familiar with hotel hospitality, they usually have back up coffee maker, microwaves, clocks, etc. We were in the area to visit our kid in college not for VD. We got frozen dinners at pavilions to have meal in our room since restaurants were booked. We had to heat our dinners upstairs in the breakfast area. Breakfast the next morning was awful -- mushy powdered eggs (they melted in your mouth like hot mush), strange bacon, warm milk, and soggy potatoes. Management offered a $17 adjustment, which does not cover the $25 parking fee. This dismissive and insulting given the extent of the all the things that went wrong. The front desk staff Hayley and Josh were friendly and professional. Not worth the price. We won't return.

The hotel has a charming, older vibe, but it's well maintained and fits the beachy, Balinese-inspired theme perfectly. Our room came with an above-average kitchen setup, which made it easy to prep snacks and simple meals during our stay. Free water bottles in the lobby were a nice touch, and the complimentary breakfast (7:30-10:30 a.m.) was way better than your standard hotel spread, fresh, even the bacon was crispy but not over cooked, tasty, and filling. It's just a short walk to the beach, the kid-friendly "children's pool" area, and of course, the famous La Jolla seals. The location is absolutely beautiful, and the view from our room patio overlooking the beach was a highlight of our trip. The rooms--and the entire hotel--were spotless. It's clear the staff takes great pride in keeping everything clean and well maintained. We really enjoyed the pool and spa area, which had plenty of lounge chairs and shaded spots to relax. The courtyard was another favorite, with foosball, ping-pong, and other games that kept everyone entertained throughout the day. The fire pits located around the property were such a nice touch, especially in the evenings. The restaurant right on the sand was a stunning setting, complete with fire pits and heaters. The food was delicious, and the views made it even better. What truly stood out was the service--everyone we encountered went above and beyond to make our stay enjoyable. The location is also very convenient, with easy access to nearby shops, restaurants, coffee spots, ice cream, and rentals. The underground parking with direct access was super convenient, and the beach concierge (who sets up umbrellas and chairs) plus available boogie boards made beach time effortless. They've definitely earned a customer for life--we can't wait to come back!

So we go out around 10 to enjoy Sea World or the Zoo, and we go out to lunch, and we just want to rest in our room before going swimming and we get back around 3. No one has been in the room. We call, and they apologize and no one shows up. We call again around 4, and at around 4:30 the room gets cleaned. Not once, not twice, but four times in our one week vacation. It's a 1st world problem and maybe I'm just a Karen, but I didn't like that.

The construction is bothersome but I was never bothered by the sounds. Progress comes with inconveniences so it didn't bother me personally. Here's why I lowered the rating. The elevator is HORRIBLE. Something should be done in the massive renovation and it was completely unreliable. Especially, since there's only one carrying luggage down the stairwells is risky at best. The brand new lighting in the bathroom was a big fail! The lights are mounted behind the mirror and my wife could barely see because it's so dim. I have to agree even finding my contacts was difficult with these dim lighting. Fix those two things and you would have a five rating.

I'm incredibly thankful I did because she responded admitting that she had booked our reservation for the wrong dates. I was shocked. We had booked our room block nearly a year in advance and had confirmed everything multiple times. Because of that mistake, my husband no longer had the suite we had reserved for him and his groomsmen to get ready in. Instead, they were placed in a much smaller room with construction directly outside. The getting-ready photos we had envisioned--and paid for a professional photographer to capture--were completely different because of an error that was not ours. What disappointed me most was the response. Rather than making every effort to fix the situation or offering a comparable solution, it felt like we were simply told, "This is what you get." As a bride, that was heartbreaking. On the morning of my wedding, I also had to spend time dealing with hotel issues instead of simply enjoying one of the most important days of my life. No bride should have to experience that. To make matters worse, after our stay my husband paid for one of our rooms, yet another charge for that same room was later processed, leaving us trying to resolve a duplicate charge after our wedding. After returning home, I found other reviews describing similar experiences involving room block mistakes and communication issues. Reading those reviews made me realize our experience may not have been an isolated incident, which was incredibly disappointing. I want to be clear that Wedgewood Weddings was absolutely incredible. Our wedding itself was beautiful, and their staff made our day special. If you're getting married in La Jolla, I highly recommend Wedgewood. Unfortunately, I cannot say the same about La Jolla Cove Suites. If you're trusting a hotel with your wedding weekend, I would strongly encourage you to consider staying elsewhere. A wedding weekend is something you'll never get back, and ours was overshadowed by avoidable mistakes and unnecessary stress.

We had a weekend getaway planned and ended up at The Shoal La Jolla Beach. The highlight was the…read moreroom we reserved. The hotel itself feels like a nicely renovated Travelodge--which it actually is--but the room made all the difference. We chose what felt like a rooftop addition: a single top-floor suite with a large private, semi-wraparound deck. It was genuinely impressive, and we loved it. The young gentleman who checked us in was charming and friendly, and we were glad to arrive. Our room was clean, and the view from the top was excellent, even with a slight obstruction. One of my least favorite post-pandemic trends is how many hotels have adopted the "reduced service" approach, which often reads as "we can't be bothered." When you're paying hundreds of dollars a night, basic service shouldn't be a negotiation. The Shoal did mention this policy upfront. The next morning, on our way out, I stopped by the front desk to keep things simple for housekeeping. We only needed two things: replacement pumps for the broken shower product dispensers (two of them), and the bed made. Straightforward. They did replace the pumps, and we appreciated that. But they didn't bother making the bed. Oddly, they did clean the bathroom and replace towels--something we didn't ask for. When a guest makes a basic request, why is it missed? Policy? Forgetfulness? Inefficiency? Hard to say. The hotel's location is excellent--about two miles from the village in a mostly residential area. There's a charming little gourmet market down the street and several restaurants within walking distance. The beach is just steps away. Even with the on-and-off rain, we genuinely enjoyed our La Jolla weekend. The food scene in this town is strong. Do a little research, because there are some fantastic restaurants packed into this small, very appealing area.

We checked in and the lady at the front desk was super friendly and helpful. However, our room was a lot smaller than I had expected. If cars are passing by, you'll hear it from the room, which made it hard for me to sleep. Also, there was a lady saying that her laptop was stolen and called the police. On the upside, it is pretty convenient to walk to downtown La Jolla and is very close to the ocean. Parking is also easy! Overall, I would probably pick somewhere quieter if we were returning to La Jolla, but other than that, not a bad price for what you're getting!
