Like I said, the receptionist/check in desk ladies are wonderful. The pool is heated and the right size. They offer you some lemon water and lots of towels near the pool, so you don't have to ask and go hunting before you get in. The hotel is always well maintained. Also, this hotel is valet only. Beautiful hotel overlooking the ocean.  We stayed here for a business trip for the Concours d'Elegance.  I prefer the rooms here over the rooms at La Valencia. The rooms were spacious and well lit.  The bed was one of the most comfortable beds ever.  The bath amenities were awesome, and the small kitchen area was a nice touch. We kept our wine chilled in the refrigerator. The staff at the hotel was pleasant, and the bar was warm and inviting. I only wish the pool area was bigger, and that there was a bar area for the pool. There are very few chairs at the pool, so if you don't get there on time, you will not get a chair. Overall, we will most likely return to this hotel. read more

I spent the weekend here w/ my girlfriend and this place is really nice. You can't beat the location of this hotel. It's just 2 minutes from the beach and walking distance from the main square. You can glance outside your window and see the ocean. It's quite beautiful actually. I originally booked a King room but they upgraded me to a suite. I think they upgraded me 'cause we informed them it was our anniversary :P The suite is pretty spacious; the kitchen has complimentary snacks (sodas, chips, candy, water). Kitchen also has a stove, coffee maker, sink, etc. It also has a fireplace too. The rooms are clean and very well maintained. They even have robes you can use so you can feel like Scarface or a Miami mob boss hahah. Prices are on the higher end though. Our room was about $230 a night. Valet runs about $22 a night, but you can get your car in/out as many times as you want. Parking is a pain so getting valet is almost required. As such, this place isn't cheap =( If I'm staying in La Jolla I'd opt to come back (unless I can find something cheaper & just as nice of course :P) read more

Great hotel! I believe the hotel is about 100 years old. So the architecture fits the name of the hotel! I'm an old-fashioned kind of gal, so I appreciated the crown molding, wainscoting and all that good stuff! We booked the standard city view room. I was impressed by the size of the room! It had a nice sitting area and a big walk-in closet! The rooms are updated with a cottage by the sea decor! The hotel is within steps to the beach and the shops. Even though we were on the 4th floor, we could still hear a lot of noise and late-night music from the street. Next time, I'd shell out the extra $50 for a ocean view room. Most importantly, I was really impressed with the door captain, Benny! He's spectacular! Made us feel welcome and at home right as we pulled up to the hotel. All weekend as we were coming and going, he'd remember us and have our car brought up in no time! The hotel charges a day rate for valet parking. After 10 years of no vacations, I decided to take 4 days. So I booked the Grande Colonial. In the 70s and 80s this was my mother favorite hotel, we would stay here for 2-3 weeks at a time. During my stay I had a couple requests. Please have some Gluten Free Buns and Breads and a small refrigerator in my room. They had the buns and bread along with the frig. So I get to the hotel room is ready and it's pretty nice, which is what I wanted. I was tired just wanted to relax, had my meat and cheese platter that I had pre-ordered while making my reservation. It was pretty good. And they did have gf bread along with platter. Excellent. I wanted something easy for dinner so I ordered a grilled chicken sandwich, it came on a GF bun, the bun was so hard I couldn't eat it, NBD I'll just eat the chicken. I had about 90% of my meal at the hotel. The Rabbit is excellent. The stuff and pretty much all customer service was excellent. It's my last day "today" and all I wanted was a regular Denver Omelet it's on 99% of all breakfast menus in America, "isn't pretty standard to have ham, cheese onions and green peppers" In a 4+ Star restaurant. My waiter comes over, Good morning sir, what would you like to order, I would like a Denver Omelet, lol he says what's that, I said you've never heard of a Denver Omelet and your in America as a waiter serving breakfast, lol ok. I told him it's just Ham, Cheese, Onions and Peppers. He comes back in about 5 minuets and says I'm sorry sir we don't have any peppers. Seriously you have no peppers this is a high end restaurant how could that be. He says will we don't and I don't even know what a Denver Omelet is. Whatever I'll take some gluten free toast, toast was delivered with no butter or jelly. So I had to ask. This was my start of the morning. After this I went to the front desk to ask for my bill. I asked Jackie I've been 4 days had room service many times and I've been paying for Valet parking. Is there any possible way to let me have a better deal on my last night and valet parking. She says let me see so she starts typing away. She gave me my bill and a walked away to start packing up. I has an pretty good vacation, the service was great and the staff was friendly. And then I read at the bottom of my bill. 4 times in a row. If you book by phone, be sure to check online for last minute deals. I found it slightly off putting that the reservations agent neglected to mention that for the exact same price as a standard room I could book a Jr Suite, I had to call back and mention the offer on the website. The front desk agents were very helpful, and smoothed out problems with a spa appointment that wasn't their fault. The Grande Colonial app was a neat feature, I think other hotels should take note. The Garden Jr Suite was nice, I was pleasantly surprised by the size and the kitchenette. Water pressure in the shower was good. Nine-Ten is a great restaurant, all the employees are friendly. However, I have been here for 6 hours now and have watched them assign rooms to everyone who showed up after me. No communication from them, no update, nada. This is a really beautiful hotel centrally located in La Jolla. It was son's birthday and we booked a suite with an ocean view. It was very relaxing and peaceful. The staff was super nice and were in walking distance of some great local restaurants. The hotel reminds me of an old European hotel and it has a lot of nice antique type touches. The staff is insolent and badly trained at giving customer service and act as if they are in somehow privileged position to be rude instead of servicing. Lovely little boutique hotel in downtown LaJolla. While originally slated to stay one block down the street at the lovely LaValencia, they were oversold one the first night so I got one night here. A very pleasant surprise and a nice alternative to the tonier LaValencia. This hotel has a small little lobby and front desk but staff have outsized personality to make this hotel a big player in downtown LaJolla. They have a small pool and views of the ocean. The halls are smaller and the rooms are literally and figuratively cozy. My room was facing the street (ocean views are in the back of the hotel). Since I knew I had a villa with ocean views the next night at LaValencia I didn't worry about it. It turned out I had an excellent people watching perch on the active main drag. The address is 910. The restaurant is Nine-Ten. Breakfast was a surprising joy! Must try it. read more

Valet was very friendly and welcoming upon arrival and each time we walked in and out of the front door. The front desk employees were helpful but not fast and not overly friendly. Our room was nice and the location was okay except we were basically unable to use our windows because they opened right out to the street on a busy corner. The bathroom window was totally unusable. Each time you opened it even for a moment there were people standing or walking feet away. Unable to get fresh air in there and was unsafe as people could come right in. The pool only had a few shaded seats and the sun was pretty intense. The bar staff was friendly but a little slow. read more

The Grande Colonial is dope little hotel dropped centrally on the snootiest street in La Jolla. Not too fancy but not slumming it at all, this hotel is just right if you're a traveler that leans of the more casual side of elegance. Hell, they let my group of misfits take it over while getting ready for a wedding last weekend and they didn't even give us the slightest bit of resistance. For you romantics: The windows on the fifth floor open completely so if you're a dude that's thinking of proposing on vacation, this may not be your hotel if there's the slimmest chance of her saying "no." It's not a huge fall but it's one that would do the trick, and the cops are quick to clean up any blem on Prospect Street - your legacy would be short lived. For the drinkers: The bar is, well, a hotel bar. Nice and cozy with a friendly lineup behind the stick. They'll be happy to serve you more than a few drinks but you'll need to remember a few things. These bartenders are locals doing their job with a (mandatory) smile on their faces and you're probably a tourist with way too many questions. Be polite and know that he has a wave to catch when he gets off work and she's probably his "roommate." You don't have a chance. Stay here and you're striking distance to anything that's worth it in La Jolla but take that with a grain of salt. La Jolla is a sleepy little town and if you're going to be in bed by 10:00pm it might as well be in one of Grande Colonial's comfy ones. read more

We stayed four nights here with friends this week. This is a terrific option for many travelers for many reasons. Location. Location. Location. You are steps from La Jolla Cove so you can see the sea lions and many types of birds. We stayed in one of the less expensive rooms and got great pricing at $199 which included and exceptionally comfortable memory foam bed and a kitchenette. The refrigerator was much bigger than what you get in most hotel rooms and it was actually useable. There was also a stove top, Keurig coffee maker, pots and pans and ice cube trays, etc. There is a Vons about 4 blocks away on Fay Avenue and I walked to it one morning. This location also has several breakfast, lunch and dinner options within a 3 block radius. Right now during COVID the city isn't enforcing parking in most spots so we parked for free on all nights and only had to valet for Saturday night when we got back late. The service here is genuine and the staff truly wants to help. Nine Ten is a fabulous restaurant. This is an older hotel but is well maintained. Everything was comfortable and worked and we had no complaints. If you enjoy walking, I walked down to the Cove and walked about 3 miles north to the Scripps Pier and walked back. It takes you through La Jolla Shores beach and there are several stores there that offer kayaking and paddle board rentals. Thank you for a lovely vacation. We will be back. read more

We wanted to make the most of our final summer weekend and this hotel was fantastic. Located in La Jolla Village, it was walking distance to many restaurants, shops and the beach. The staff was SUPERB! The valet guys were great. They greeted us every time we left or came back to the hotel. The front desk was efficient and helpful and texted us the day of our check-in and communicated with us via text if we wanted any breakfast, room service or cleaning service. I even asked them for suggestions on the best kayaking places near the hotel and they responded promptly with their suggestions and we booked it for the next day. For an older hotel, it was revamped nicely and we definitely plan on coming back to stay here soon. read more

I love this little place. More quaint than most, I'd give it 5 stars but for the lack of available parking and the accessibility for some could be difficult. There's an elevator but each floor has an additional 1/2 staircase to get to many of the rooms. Lots of narrow halls and staircases but they're constantly painting and sprucing up here. For an old little hotel it always feels like there are new linens and a fresh coat of paint. I'd recommend asking for an ocean view, you can't see a lot of the ocean but seeing the sunset is a prettier and less noisy view than the street side of the hotel facing night clubs that stay open until the early morning. Or ask for a room facing Jenner Street rather than the parking lot. Smack in the middle of downtown La Jolla with plenty of places to walk for coffee in the morning then take a stroll along the beach or through the lovely streets of quaint La Jolla. Art galleries, restaurants, clothing stores, jewelry, hats, shoes, sea shells, lots to see and a great place to pick up a souvenir. Dinner downstairs at nine-ten is always a great idea or stop in for a drink before heading out for dinner. read more

I can not say enough positive things about this gem! Husband and I decided we needed a little mini getaway after months of staying at home. La Jolla was the perfect destination and the Grande Colonial the obvious choice. Being the only 4 Diamond hotel in La Jolla and located in the middle of everything made our stay a amazing. When we arrived several hours before the standard check in time, we were pleasantly surprised that our room was already cleaned and available for check in. Even more to our surprise, they upgraded our garden view reservation to the highest floor, corner, ocean view room! I was so thrilled! Walking info the room was just breathtaking! This is an older hotel built in 1913, so hallways and staircases are small as are the rooms, but all the essentials are provided. Our room included a flat screen tv, mini fridge, coffee bar, and bottles of water. The most impressive was the extra large window opening up to our ocean view. We slept with the window open so we could hear the waved all night long. We were even able to watch the sunset directly from our room. They have a small pool available for guest use, no spa or gym, and a restaurant that offered outdoor dining. The services was spectacular, hand sanitizing stations available throughout the building and even as part of the room condiments, elevators are used for one party at a time, and the valet will be able to charge an electric are. We thoroughly enjoyed our stay and look forward to returning soon. read more

Spent several days here on a little staycation from LA. We actually stayed in the Little Hotel by the Sea. So overall, the hotel is great. It is very upscale, well appointed and the service is impeccable. It is close to beach, shops and restaurants so you don't have to use your car unless you leave the town. We had a spacious suite with a little kitchenette, sitting area and large bathroom. It was perfect for my wife and I and our little one. Here are my two little complaints preventing me from giving it the 5th star. Firstly, I don't understand why there is no bellman. I don't care if I only have one small bag, there should be a bellman to help at this type of hotel. Secondly, there is no service at the pool area. I can understand that you can't staff a person all time, but you should at least be able to call in an order and have it brought out to you. Again, I wouldn't expect this at a Motel 6, but I would expect it here. read more

And honestly the carpet smelled like it was original from 1913 when it first opened! Service was atrocious, food was stale, ants and rats everywhere. Maid stole some personal belongings. They charged me $100 cleaning fee for one night they said my Yorkers stayed the night, "because they saw them entering the building on camera". Give me a break my son let them out to go potty and later took them in their carriers to keep them at his condo in PB. First and last time I will ever stay there. read more

We had the pleasure of staying at the Grand Colonial this last weekend and it was simply amazing. Positioned at the best spot in La Jolla with beautiful ocean views directly from our suite, we enjoyed every minute of our stay. The hotel is an amazingly beautiful classic, but renovated to modern standards in every way and very tastefully decorated. The pool was nicely heated and towels supplied poolside. Overall Clean, stylish and most importantly - incredibly comfortable. Every staff member was very friendly and professional and we really appreciated their excellent service! Then to top it off, the on-site restaurant, Nine-Ten, was truly a 5-Star dining experience. I'm sure a lot of people come to La Jolla just to go here :-) read more

So, stayed at this hotel 2 years ago and had a pretty good experience, but was sorely disappointed this time. First, this was for a girls' weekend and two of us decided to book a junior suite to give us more space. The junior suites are in a separate building, and judging by our room, the suites are a bit run down from worn carpet to stains on the wall, and the rooms and hallway smell. Upon entering the room, I went to wash my face only to find that the towel was dirty. I then inspected the bed and found hairs in the bed. The curtain rod had broken off and someone just laid it across the ottoman. This was not a very auspicious start. The room is still quite tight with only about a foot clearance between the beds and the wall. The only good aspect to the room is the spacious bathroom and dressing area. On our second day we returned to our room at 3 pm only to find it had not been serviced. The shampoo had been filled with water, not shampoo, and the room had no hairdryer. When I called the front desk, there was barely any apology and then it took a second call over 20 minutes later to remind them to send the hairdryer. While it may seem like small stuff... I hate feeling as if I am staying in a dirty room, or somewhere where the staff don't respond with appropriate service. Cannot recommend staying in any of the suites. If you do stay at this hotel, insist on the rooms in the main part of the hotel. Have been quite disappointed in the service from the manager when I mentioned our challenges, by the way. read more

But, to my surprise, there are three guests at a table (in the small terrace) playing their own music, drunk as can be, and throwing up on the planters behind my table. I ask the manager and the waiter if they can please ask them to leave, but 45 minutes later, they have done nothing. Instead, the waiter says "the terrace is now closed, anyway!" This hotel stay has been wonderful for my kids and I. We wanted to have the true La Jolla experience and feel the Grande Colonial delivered! The Hotel is beautiful! I love early 1900's architecture so the building was one of my favorite parts. My kids loved the pool, it never was too crowded and the temp was just right. I can't say enough about the customer service! The front desk staff were all so gracious and helpful from the moment we arrived. The Valet was also on point and I never had trouble getting my car quickly or parking right in front when returning to the hotel each day. Hospitality staff really goes the extra mile. I found our room so neat and tidy each day and they made extra effort to arrange my kids stuffed animals and perfectly wind up headphones cords for us. It's those little details that i notice. The rooms are nice.. but have odd layouts as its an old hotel. The staff felt like locals working for the holiday- rather than pros. The guys up front were usually chatting and let you get the door yourself most of the time. If you have a nice car you get comments like .. "let me get the door for you.. would you like a bottle of water for your trip". My car was dirty... I got blank stares and had to ask for assistance. Some staff were good. Food was good. No overnight parking except valet. For the price- it should have been better. read more

Found The Grande Colonial on Hotels Tonight during a quick biz trip to San Diego. Since we had a dinner at a colleague's house in La Jolla, we decided to stay close the their pad. We generally like The Valencia in La Jolla, but it was almost $100 more a night, so we decide to try this spot. It's smaller and doesn't have the facilities of HV, but the rooms are cozy, modern and generous. Even thought we booked through a discount seller, they put us in an ocean view room (we did have to walk down a flight of stairs after exiting the elevator to get to our room). The amenities were high end and the bathroom had a bathtub which is always important. Only negatives were that the bar is tiny (connected to the restaurant) and the lounge which is in front of the entrance was quite cold, so it wasn't inviting enough to stay for a drink as alternative to standing in the crowded, tiny bar. So we walked down the street to have drink in the Hotel Valencia lounge. They have what looks like a lovely pool and deck. The service is professional and friendly and quick valet parking. read more

Where do I begin? This was by far the worst hotel experience we have ever had. And, what's worse, it was our wedding night hotel. This is far from a "luxury" hotel as it is advertised. First, we booked well in advance for 2 nights (Fri/Sat). When booking, we asked for guaranteed early check in (normal check in is absurd - 4:00pm)- otherwise we would book an extra night (Thursday) since our Rehearsal was at 4:15. We were told not to do that, that they would accommodate the early check in (just 2 hours so 2:00) so we could drop our stuff, shower, and leave for our Wedding Rehearsal. I called to confirm on Thursday - I was told no problem at all. I called to confirm again on Friday morning - I was told it "shouldn't be a problem." 2:00pm, room wasn't ready, but they were cleaning it now. 3:00 still not ready 3:30 they tell me to walk down the street and shower at a local gym because they are putting the "final touches" on the room.....seriously? Is this an SNL skit? :::::I begin pacing the lobby::::: 3:40 - I drink a martini in the hotel bar...and no, it was not on the house. 3:45 I am placed in an employee room to shower. I shower and get a phone call halfway through that my room is ready. 3:55 Room is ready. I hobble to it soaking wet in a towel carrying some of my luggage. 4:15 My ride to the rehearsal arrives. They did nothing to rectify the situation other than apologizing to my sister, who they thought was me the next morning. The Room: Junior King Suite Old and musty smell Disgusting carpet Uncomfortable bed Terrible water pressure Bathroom sink water smelled like rotten eggs No fridge As if this wasn't bad enough, the morning after our wedding, we called to ask for 30 extra minutes to check out so we could gather all the wedding decorations and pack them in the car (normal check out is 12:00). After everything we went through you would think they'd be okay with a mere THIRTY MINUTES. Nope. We were told we would be charged a half day. Disgusting. Good think they have the full 4 hours to clean the room before the next victim checks in. It gets worse...in all the chaos, my hair dryer was left in the employee room. I called several times, but no one found it....however, I received a call 2 weeks later that they did in fact find it, but were charging my card for USPS shipping. Classy. The woman at the desk was rude, smug, and just generally unhappy and unwilling to assist. They get one star for these two people: 1. Caesar was kind and tried to help as much as possible. 2. Laura, the Head of Housekeeping is so kind. The "car service" they offer is BS. Never available. In short, this was a terrible experience. The incompetence and classlessness of the Grand Colonial did not ruin our wedding day (our wedding was at the La Jolla Woman's Club) thank God. It just added to the stress. We ended up changing hotels for the remainder of our stay. I highly recommend the Inn by the Sea and the Empress Hotels. Effortlessly beautiful, kind, accommodating, and clean! Please do yourself a favor and do NOT stay at the Grand Colonial, they lack decency in every sense of the word. read more

We stayed 3 days at the Grande Colonial and had a great time. Service is fantastic, everyone was so friendly and the valet was very quick. All you had to do was call down and they would have your car waiting for you when you arrived. Rooms are not huge, but they certainly are big enough for a hotel. Same with the bathrooms, which I would actually call small. But, the hotel is 100 years old, so I wouldn't expect large bathrooms like you would see in a modern hotel. We were on the 2nd floor, which meant we had a short half flight of stairs walk to the lobby. The ice machine is in the basement, but you can ask for a bellman to bring it up and it is to your room very quickly. Free USA Today on weekdays was a nice touch as well. Our room was a corner room and had an ocean view from 2 of the 3 large windows. There were a couple of buildings blocking it, but you certainly could see a lot of the ocean, even if you were in bed. Excellent location on Prospect, easy walking distance to a lot of restaurants, shops, and the ocean. Finally, the restaurant, Nine Ten, was excellent. I would definitely stay at Grande Colonial again next time we come to La Jolla. read more
