GLENVIEW , Illinois A friend and I had lunch today at Grandpa's Place. I asked if Grandpa was in today and naturally he was out, playing house with grandma, Jaaaa. My friend had the Reuben and I had the Cheddar bacon burger with a bowl of Chili. The Chili wasn't bad, but it is better at Jason's Deli in my opinion. Now, for the cheddar burger with bacon. It was huge. It was thick. You get what you pay for. It was tasty and it comes with fries and slaw. Overall a decent bang for your buck. You might leave broke, but you won't leave hungry ! The building itself is a quaint brick building in the old grand style of days gone by. It has roof top out door dinning which means I'll be back. I love the ambiance and the roof top venue. It is across the street from the Amtrack / Metra Train Station which is another architectural gem. read more

Thank you Grandpas for a great little private party last night! The Lang Hall was a very large room that made our 10+ person party with some seniors and some immunocompromised guests feel very comfortable about having a drink and a bite to eat with friends for our anniversary celebration last night. I appreciated you letting us just order from the menu and bar. Our waitress was great! No music to accommodate the heating aids in the room but then at the end of the night someone who was there for open mic night asked us to join the group in the upstairs and dedicated a couple songs to us. About as average of a bar one will come accross as this is a place grandpa would love. The place does have a private banquet party area and overall is a clean modern bar next to the metra station in this steller Chicago suburb. Grandpa's is the after-work bar of choice at my office, although I am a very antisocial coworker, so I go only when somebody is leaving the company, and not just anyone but someone whom I liked. So I've been there only three times. This place is pretty family-friendly; you will typically see children there well past 9, although those groups do tend to wrap up around 7:30-8. Until then you have the after-work crowds mingling with locals and families, so it's not really a bar atmosphere. There is a slightly loungier room toward the back which we always take over--fireplace, TVs, a couple of loveseats, and a handful of regular tables and chairs. Drinks, service, and everything else are fairly middle-of-the-road. Prices are great, though. I am looking at my receipt from the last visit (how magnanimous of me to buy so many drinks...) and almost can't believe it: 4 Smithwick's, 1 Corona, 1 Ketel One and Red Bull, and 8 Irish Car Bombs for $83.25. Even though we work in a financial industry, I'm not good at math, so somebody please tell me if I am wrong in my analysis of: goddamn great deal. Gotta love the north suburbs. Also, I know that we've had some of their food before but damned if I can remember. Those nights got a little fuzzy. read more

THE BEST! I really really enjoy Grandpa's. I have never had a bad meal here and I've been visiting Grandpa's for at least five years. I first visited Grandpa's before their renovation a few years ago. At that time, I admit, it was a bit of a dive, but a fabulous one! The burgers are super - juicy and delicious (you can go with the 'grandma' burger if you want a smaller portion). I've also tried many of the other menu items and I've always been pleased with my selection. The renovation has 'spruced' up Grandpa's, but it hasn't lost it's 'dive' appeal. The burgers are still wonderful. The beer is fresh, the wine is solid, and inexpensive, and the mixed drinks are artfully made. They used to serve Merkt's spread with breadsticks for free...you now have to pay, but it's well worth it. You can also get Merkt's on your burger or sandwich - I highly recommend it! A visit for lunch, dinner, to watch a game, or just hang out - it's a definite must if you are in the area! read more

My friend and I came here for the first time and were excited to try the food and have a few beers. It took me 10 minutes to get a bartenders attention and finally got some beer. We found and open table and sat down to enjoy our beers. We've been sitting here for 30 minutes and not one employee has acknowledged our existence, offered us a menu or even looks our way. Had so much fun here catching up with friends. This place is super cute inside with a portion of it actually looking like your Grandpa's living room. Maybe a weird thing to notice but their bathrooms have beautiful tile in them. I enjoyed my beer, and chicken quesadilla and ended up ordering coffee as well. The only reason I'm not giving this place 5 stars is because I felt $19 and some odd change was a bit much for one beer, coffee and chicken quesadilla but it won't keep me from going back. This is one the worst restaurant service I've experienced. I've been here for lunch a few times without any problems, and because the food is good, I decided to come here for dinner. I had a choice of sitting outside on the patio for a 40 minute wait or indoors right away. We were hungry so decided to sit inside. No one came to our table for 15 minutes, then when we placed an order for nachos as our appetizer and a burger and chicken sandwich for our entree. The nachos took an hour and 10 minutes to get to our table, which took longer than the wait to sit outside. During this hour and 10 minutes, our server came to check on us once about 40 minutes in asking if we got our food. We asked to speak to a manager to two other servers, and when the manager came out with our nachos, all he did was apologize because they have a big party, and how we should have been told that it would take long to get our food. 15 minutes later, our entrees came out, which our server gave to us. We then asked our server for more salsa for the nachos, and he never gave it to us. He also never once appeared again afterwards or even checked on us about the food or our drink level. We had to ask another server for the check and a box because, again, we were waiting since our server was MIA. During this whole service, the manager was carrying a sampler platter that obviously was most likely a mistake or whoever ordered it no longer wanted because he offered it to us to take to go. Again, pretty terrible service from beginning to end with no discounts, no comps, no extra attention from our server after complaining about food taking too long, and only offered another table's mistake order of a sampler platter. read more

Cozy little local pub/restaurant across from the Metra station in Glenview. This was my first time here but the friend I came with is a somewhat regular here. Grandpa's Place used to be a house back in the day so the atmosphere is warm and welcoming. There's a bar area, tables to dine at, and a living room with couches that make you feel like you're at home. Service was friendly and very efficient on a slow, Sunday night. I had the pulled pork sandwich with a side of fries, coleslaw, and a pickle. My friend had a burger but I can't remember which one..sorry for not being helpful! My pulled pork was nicely flavored and tender; it wasn't amazing but it definitely hit the spot. The fries were meh but I didn't expect out-of-this-world fries from a pub like this. read more

Grandpa's Place offers great food and drink specials all week. For brunch on the weekend they have an impressive breakfast platter of high quality meats and ingredients for only $5. Also, this place is a great venue to host events. They have a downstairs and an upstairs that can be private away from all other regular business. We had our engagement party upstairs and they had it staffed with a bartender, as well as a buffet set up. The outdoor terrace upstairs was a bonus. Grandpa's place is an excellent place to come at any time of the year. During the warmer months they have an impressive patio that seats probably 20+ tables, with an outdoor TV for sports. Several TV's throughout the restaurant, including the bar area and the lounge area that has leather couches. Service is very friendly and professional. read more

A family favorite: what I like the most about grandpas is that it is CONSISTENT. If you order the same salad every week for a year it will look the Exact same every time you come. The exact amount of tomatoes and all. This is incredibly helpful in a restaurant like this, because frankly people are all pretty picky about burgers or tuna melts or fish sticks or salads, whatever. If you don't like something, just try another. I order the Thai Salad several times a month, and rotate some other items, which are all pretty good. Restaurants in Glenview have definitely lowered my expectations, but I have to say that Grandpas is a solid place to have a simple meal with your family. You can grab a couple beers with friends and no one will freak out if your kids squeal or run around on the patio. We know and love the waitstaff because they are from the area. We had 2 corporate events here and the staff are very pleasant and professional. Great place to meet friends for a drink or to pop in for a quick bite if you are in the area. It is super convenient being close to the Metra. Great comfort foods but I come here for the salads. Their thai chicken salad is fantastic, very large portion as well. I guess Grandpa's Place is an appropriate name. It's a bar - clean, nice size, and pretty typical for a bar. There were about two rooms. Nothing extra really. Like, no electronic games, but there was a TV. We went on a Thursday night. We easily got our own table. Phil got us drinks at a bar: two Jacks & Coke, bourbon, and wine. There were a bunch of men (they seemed to be there from a softball game or after work). They all looked like they were between the ages of 40 and 60. Nobody carded us. Nobody talked to us. My cousin had a party after her rehearsal dinner in the upstairs room. It was a fabulous place to have a private party. There were two rooms on the inside and a rooftop deck that was huge outside. People always talk about Grandpa's. My son and I had dinner there tonight. Service was fine, a little louder than I like but the food was not great. I ordered Fish and Chips (and maybe that was the first problem) but they just looked like frozen sticks of fish that were warmed up - they were NOT good. I've only eaten there once before and it didn't too much for me then either. Oh well - it's always nice to know what restaurant you don't need to go to anymore...for WAY better food, go to the Glenview House - right across the street. read more

Returned here after a long hiatus to enjoy lunch with a couple of friends. Location-wise, it was a good spot for us to meet. Two of us had Rueben sandwiches and the third had a burger. The burger looked good and my friend who ordered it confirmed that. The Rueben I had however was totally average - one of the most mediocre items I've had at a restaurant in recent times. Grandpa's is a neighborhood pub right across from the Glenview train station. It's a town staple, the reliable place you can go to for a sandwich or a beer. It's clean and inviting. The food is average to better-than-average. There are times that the noise in unpleasantly loud, and other days where it's a cozy neighborhood spot. You never quite know what you're going to get in terms of atmosphere. I've enjoyed burgers, their corned beef, reuben, pulled pork, tuna melt, and turkey club over the years, as well as their burgers. Although I've never order dessert, the friend I was there with the night of the review made me promise to say their brownie sundae was delicious, and so large that he actually had to push the plate away before it was completely finished. I would go for the drink and a place to hang out opposed to dinner, unless they can get back on track. Super dissapointed. Okay, so it's bar food! But, it's damn good bar food. They make a really yummy Reuben Sandwich (horseradish on the side, please) and the beer is always good and cold. How can you not love their outside patio and hometown ambience?? This place has been around FOREVER and you can feel the history in the walls. The waitstaff is typically ON TOP of things. We usually have the same waitress. I swear, she must live there (I really should know her name by now). About 2 weeks ago, however, my family and I (yes, we frequent this joint) were assigned a NEW waitress. She was very inexperienced and very young. She totally screwed up our order. We were frustrated, but, YES, this stuff does happen. When my husband went back last week (with a friend and the kids) the owner sought him out and gave him and his party (7 people total) a FREE meal. THIS is service!! This is making good on something bad. This is good business. Compare this to my review for Rama Thai Kitchen. Grandpas is a cornerstone in Glenview. It's a great place for kicking back, drinking some beers.....relaxing on the patio. It's good for people watching as people come and go from the train station. It's just GOOD. By most measures, I'm a city snob. I hate Applebee's and the like, and am deeply unsettled by cul-de-sacs and winding sidewalkless streets. However, I happened upon this little gem when I missed my goddamn train. It's a pretty agreeable little pub. Clean, bright, nice patio, and a good degree of actual working class clientele alongside the white collars. No snooty BS at all. A comfy place to wait the additional goddamn hour till the next train. Been going this place for more than 25 years. Have not been there in the last three or four. I was there about six years ago and it was horrible. This used to be one of the best places around. They had awesome on me chili and all the food was good. When here the other night and said outside there was four of us. I have to tell you the waitress was horrible. Had to cut my asking her for anything from silverware to a refill on a drink. Didn't bring the original order together correctly. Had to wait an additional 10 minutes for fries and they were horrible. Super low quality and barely hot. Chicken tenders are gross. How hard is it to buy frozen chicken tenders in deep fry them?? Haven't been there in a while, but its a nice quaint place. People are generally decent here, and there's two sections for the place: one for the bar, and the other for the restaurant. The bar is, well, the bar. The restaurant is where everyone else is at, but also where musicians, bands, and dancers do their stuff for a bit of entertainment. Always nice seeing a cool band, or a bunch of local little ladies dancing the Irish dances in or around St Patrick's Day. Food is generally very good - I like their sandwiches in general, and their chili is de-lish...whatever you order, tends to be tasty and a very decent portion too. Outdoor seating is available, great for summer stooping and drinking. A must go if you're in Glenview "downtown". read more

Wonderful, cozy and great with kids. The food came out in a flash and was top-notch! Drinks were huge and came with to-go cups. French onion soup was divine. Kids meals were nice and hearty.
