The location of this establishment could not be more key; especially if you just missed your Metra train and you pull up just to see it pulling away :( I've been wanting to go here since I my gbs days, figured this was a better time than any. Walked in during non-busy hours, was seated right away, wait staff was quick with the menu and the very simple order of a hot dog and a rum&coke. Good family staple. A fine Irish bar. Very homey atmosphere. When you first sit down order a basket of crackers and merits cheddar. Nice to nibble on. Our waiter was fantastic. He really took great care of us. My older kids ordered "green rivers". Burgers are great. I ordered the fish n chips. They didn't look food, but tasted superb. I like the Rueben. It is big, meaty, juicy and delicious. Does well with their sweet potato fries and cole slaw. But a similar serving, the Corned Beef Sandwich, is a bit dry. Both have an abundance of the corned beef, which is highly shreded, but with the dryer sandwich, you have a harder time keeping it all together. Their sandwiches come with a great dill pickle slice and a choice of sides. A few of the beers are on tap. 11-18 We had a Blackended Burger (with a little Cajun zip) and a Pub Burger. They were big, juicy and excellent. Grandpa's is very noisy even with only half a houseful and no entertainment. Service is efficient and friendly. Has off-street parking and some patio dining areas, and party rooms downstairs and upstairs where there is sometimes entertainment. I understand the building is over 100 yrs old and has been through several owners and uses. Prices seemed to have gone up recently, although I can't blame them as it is a popular place. read more

Saw a few negative reviews but wanted to see a band that was playing. Band was great. Workers I encountered were awful. Zero people skills. Well actually bartender I got my drink from was ok, but instead of telling me what I owed on five drinks he just grabbed my $50 and brought back change. Zero thank you or even an acknowledgement, still tipped, but not sure I should of. At this point I felt like I had a you're a dick sign on my forehead. I want to preface this as this is a review on their restaurant capabilities. It is not a review on their ability to serve booze. So perhaps shame on me for expecting good food here. We were told to go here for the food and were incredibly disappointed. Nothing seemed to be fresh. The fish and chips were clearly not fresh and seemed to have come from the freezer, and the same for the fries. The booth seat was worn revealing the fabric underneath and the service was slow despite the restaurant being wide open. read more

The best thing Grandpa's has going for it is the outdoor patio area. Right across from the train station, you can do a lot of people watching late afternoon. The menu is ok with ok burgers. The service can be hit or miss, usually hit. Servers need to be trained with the basics. Could easily be a destination spot for good food. Unfortunately, not with this menu. They could do so many things to improve the quality and increase they're revenue. Make hand cut fries, make tortilla chips for the nachos, have some great items on the menu that people can't get just anywhere, let patrons know what the specials are, The list is long. Should be soooo much better and it would not take much. The beer list is nothing great, but it all taste better on that patio. Indoors, it was renovated a couple of years ago. So now it's a little shinier, I miss the older look. Also, inside it can be very loud, with the sound bouncing off the hard surfaces. The renovation added a few flat screen TVs and a couple of leather couches in a side room, a very good place for a group of 4 to 12 to hang out a watch a game on the TV's. read more

What a find! This is not your typical bar food. This is a wonderful family-friendly and pub atmosphere. Had the best corn beef sandwich ever, fresh coleslaw, decent sweet potato fries and outstanding service by Christine who wins server of the year. This was some of the worst service I've ever experienced. My school reserved the upstairs for one of my colleague's retirement party. The taco bar package that we ordered was supposed to be out by 5:45, but the manager Scott kept avoiding people and saying they were running a little behind. When the food finally came out at 6:30 (minus the appetizers we ordered), it was not the taco bar that was promised. There was barely enough food to feed 20 people, and we had given the restaurant our count of almost 50. The manager continued to act like it wasn't a big deal that they ran out of the food we ordered, and thought that the bar food he eventually put out (pizza, sliders, potato skins) around 7:30 made up for not having the food we ordered. To make matters worse, the bartender was extremely rude and was charging people for soft drinks until we had to argue with her that they were supposed to be included in our package. I will not be coming back here and discourage anyone from booking a party at Grandpa's. read more

This place was great. We had a party of 16 and called them within ten minutes of our arrival and they accommodate us. The service was so excellent with it being a large party, we had one server who got us all together. I believe her name was Kristina? She followed up and made sure we were well taken care of. I've worked pretty close to Grandpa's for the past seven months or so and have gone there a few times for lunch. I like the general atmosphere and decor and the fact that it never seems to be crowded. Beyond that, I don't have much to say that's complimentary. I realize that this isn't fine dining, but it's possible to get decent bar food at plenty of bars. Not so much at this one, however. I've had the grilled chicken sandwich a couple of times, thinking that it's pretty hard to mess that up. It was quite possibly the blandest thing I've ever had. More recently, I had the tuna melt, which was oddly watery and was served on bread that resembled and tasted like cardboard. The fries are similarly flavorless. Going forward, I would stop off here for a drink, but I would not order food here again. read more

Our teenage-boy's soccer team reserved the downstairs room at Grandpa's today for a lunch/party - it was the perfect private space, able to go in and out, and even play Bags, and the food and service (Sophia!) were both great!! We had a football parent get-together there on a Saturday night and the service was terrific with our own bar set up, appetizers, TVs on but not too loud, and bathrooms in the room, very convenient. Food is good. Service is good but can sometimes be a little slow. The layout is broken up into lots of nooks and crannies so hard to flag down the server unless he or she is walking by. Had to wait a few times, but always courteous, professional and helpful once you catch them. They just started doing an open mic night on Tuesday's with some good local talent showing up to play, but that's just in one room so it doesn't bother people who don't want the live music. I am an Eastenders fiend.Naturally I am in search of a pub that reminds me of the Queen Victoria. This is it. The type of place where you'd judge someone's character on the fact that he uses his local pub. I would, and I don't even drink. What makes an authentic Irish or British pub? The beautiful wood and bar. A game going on a tv or 2. Sunday it was Chicago vs. Seattle, and the place was packed. No blaring music, the noise is all the patrons. A separate room with a fireplace. A private party put on by the pub, in this case it was the Lions Club fundraiser. The buffet was out for that, right in the center of the dining area. Food looked great. Fantastic pub food, no Shepard's Pie. I'd like to see more traditional options. My corned beef sandwich was fantastic, not too lean the way I like it. It comes with a generous side salad, with house made vinegrette, very light, and super tasty. Service from Jen was very good in spite of how packed it was. She also had some help from the bus staff that gave us refills and were on top of things, and glad to help when she wasn't around. We didn't feel like sitting outside, but it's a beautiful 2 story area, and one has a fireplace. I finally found my Ballykissangel in a suburb of Chicago. read more

This place is a neighborhood institution. Walking into this establishment you get the feel that people know each other. It also has the welcoming feel for those meeting up to meet others ready to knit/crochet and even drink for an hour or two. With the renovation of another local bar a block and half down the road and the prime location next to the Metra, the business is always hopping. Come closer to St. Paddy's Day white outdoor tents pop up and a weeks worth of festivities filled with laughter and bag pipes can be heard coming from Grandpa's. The Friday fish fries are also huge house packers with families and singles mingling together. The after church crowd are drawn here as well as the working crew taking in a few after hours drinks (pre or post train). On this particular occasion I did not eat the food only the drink. You can never go wrong with a blue moon on tap. The fireplace adds charm and invites one to gather around the fire and catch a game on the big screen overhead. read more

Been going to Grandpa's for 35 years and they always had the best burgers. Last week I ordered mine medium rare and it turn out well done and very dry. I let the waitress know right away, and she said "sorry". I sent it back after just two bites but received no refund and no other compensation. Just "sorry". Well I'm sorry too. I used to love it there, and now I won't go back. I would have accepted a free dessert, free drink, or ideally a refund on the burger. Not providing some conciliatory gesture for poorly cooked food is a restaurant blunder, in my opinion. It's so easy to resolve, you have to be really lazy or really apathetic to miss such a simple chance to win me back. read more

Fairly basic bar and restaurant in an old fashioned brick two story across from the Glenview train station. We've been enjoying this place for a casual meal and drinks for decades. Best feature is the outdoor patio dining and drinking option in the summer, recently expanded. The very signature menu item here is the Reuben sandwich - best on the North Shore. So the food at Grandpas does make your eyes roll in the back of your head and wanting to smoke a cigarette afterwards BUT it is good bar food. I have never had bad service here and my kids, especially my 5 year old son, love coming here. Grandpa's has games and a "living room" area where the kids go and play until the food comes. A great opportunity for my husband and I to have an uninterrupted conversation. I love the burgers here particularly the patty melt washed down with a beer. First of all, be prepared: This restaurant is noisy, crowded and busy! We visited for the first time and I think I'm a fan! We sat in the back, but, even there, it was hard to hear our friends at our table speaking....I ordered the beef sandwich. It was plentiful and delicious. I would definitely order it again. I've been told they get all their meats from Reagan Meats in Glenview so I'm very impressed. My husband had the all-you-can eat Friday night fish fry. They gave him 3 pieces of fish at a time---until he was full. However, the fish is not perch nor cod, but basso. The breading was very light and the fish flavorful. Will definitely return. I have been to this place a number of times and have always had a good, simple American meal served by a friendly staff. They serve Guinness on draft by the pint which I always get for my drink. The place is warm and inviting and at a convenient spot next to the Glenview train station. The patrons are friendly too. Stop at the bar for a drink and you'll be engaged in a conversation in no time. Their daily specials are a real value but their prices overall are not expensive. I'm happy to leave a generous tip when the meal, the service and the ambience are so reliably good. The only issue I have is that it gets noisy when the restaurant and bar are filled with patrons in the evening. There is little separation between the bar and the dining area but this is not something that would keep me away. It's still one of my favorite places on the north shore. read more

We had a party here for a teacher who is retiring. We got the upstairs room for the event. The buffet was supposed to begin at 5:30 and provide 2 hours of refills of food. There was supposed to be 2 appetizer plus chips and salsa, and other food items including tacos and quesadillas. At 5:30 they started with excuses about the buffet being ready "in just a few minutes." It wasn't ready until after 6:15. There were no appetizers, just stale chips and salsa. While there were tacos and quesadillas, there was no sour cream for the quesadillas. When the food ran out -- there were no refills! Someone explained that the chef left -- ??? Really? And the party manager had gone home, in spite of the 2 private parties going on. The manager on site did try to help matters by providing -- 45 minutes later -- some sliders and pizzas from across the street. Several people had also gotten charged for soft drinks which were supposed to be included, and they didn't even provide iced tea with the soft drinks. The whole experience was completely disappointing in terms of service and food. The place is cute, and the outside areas are nice in summer. I won't be returning. When some said they would pay the balance after talking to the manager on Monday, the server balked. We didn't get what we had paid for! Not sure how that was resolved. The retiring teacher still had those who cared for her around her celebrating, but this place should be comping this horrible debacle. read more

Good beer selection, the rueben sandwich, the burgers, and the hot wings rock! The wings are nice and meaty with the right amount of crunch. Have them apply the hot wing sauce and the BBQ sauce over it, great flavor. Service is good, they have a great outside patio. This is a great place to get some work done on fast WiFi while you enjoy a true bar atmosphere in the middle of suburban Glenview. I'm surprised there aren't more Amtrak commuters who don't stop in since the station is across the street but it wasn't like the place was dying to have more people. This time I was here right after lunch time so I didn't eat but I've had apps here before. If memory serves, I remember they were good enough but not memorable.
