The Works has been around for several decades, and I tried The Works again, shortly after ownership changed hands, and they updated the decor and removed the newspaper clippings that mentioned a wrestler named Steve Austin and Marlee Matlin visiting the restaurant. And actually, Marlee lived in the area close to The Works when she was growing up. Anyway, during both visits, I found the meat to be dry; it had flavor, but no moisture. Background: I am originally from a Balkan country and have also visited Greece. I grew up eating this kind of food. As such, I take my gyros and general Balkan fare somewhat seriously. It is quite difficult to find proper authentic gyros (pork or chicken) as opposed to the more common Greek-American lamb/beef ground mash so this restaurant drew my eye. I typically order from a different nearby Greek spot but was curious to try this place out. Ordered via delivery app so can't say anything about ambiance or service other than it was quickly prepared. Food: Ordered the pork gyro plate, spanakopita, and baklava. The pork gyro was extremely bland. Tasted like only seasoned with salt. No hint of typical Greek spices that should be expected from Greek grilled meats. Also it was dry which makes me suspect it wasn't made in the proper way of stacking thin slices of pork on a spit and rotating it and was instead cooked on a griddle. I wasn't inside the restaurant to check so I can't say for certain. The fries were crispy but otherwise generic and average. Pita bread was average. Tzatziki was loose and very bland. The portions for this 20 dollar gyro plate were very small especially when considering the overall subpar quality. Either charge 10 dollars or make the food better with bigger portions. I'd rate it 1.5/5. The spanakopita filling was bland and straight mush. The phyllo pastry was wildly greasy to the point i had to peel off about half of it from both sides to attempt finishing spanakopita. Even then it was honestly just slop and I only finished about 1/3rd of the pastry before tossing it. I typically always try to finish my food as I was raised not to waste but this was genuinely off-putting. 0.5/5 The baklava was your average Greek baklava. Nothing to particularly write home about. 3/5 Conclusion: Based on reading other recent reviews, this place apparently changed ownership and dropped off in quality, quantity, and pricing. Following my experience, I can confirm this is indeed the truth. I will not patronize this business in the future. For those looking for authentic Greek gyros and other Greek items, I highly recommend trying Charcoal Flame about 2 or 3 miles away from this location. They outperform this restaurant in every regard. read more

The Works Grill serves up some great Chicago style hotdogs and their burgers are not that far off. service is the worst part of the experience. The young lady at the counter seems to not be able to get off her phone and look up. I was standing in front of her ready to order when I finally had to ask her to help me. I've only been to Works Grill once and need to go back to confirm, but it may be some of the best gyros I've found in the burbs around here. Greek gyros restaurants in the U.S. usually have their purveyors make a custom blend of ground meats and herbs, though I prefer the traditional layered meat, pressed together. For me, it has to include lamb, which isn't always the case around here, mixed with beef and or pork, and seasoned with herbs like oregano, garlic, onion, and cumin. Many years ago, when I was in college in Madison, WI, there was a great gyros spot where I'd always eat at least two sandwiches, often three, and a couple of times four because it was so good. They'd make them big for me since I was a regular. I like it cooked crispy on the spit and sliced thin, never thrown on a flat top or grill. I was burning a lot more calories back then, but I still love a great gyro. I haven't found gyros that good anywhere around here, and I've been to all the places that specialize in them, including Dengoes, The Hub, and others. There may be great gyros at some Chicago spots I haven't tried. Any recommendations? read more

New owners, newly remodeled, but mostly the same crew who makes a great souvlaki, gyros sandwich, and awesome generic-ish fries, this place still delivers on good and tasty food. I'll be honest, the gyros sandwich is 95% the same compared to the originally made by the previous family owners...just something tiny seemed different, but yet is still a good sandwich. As is the pork souvlaki. And fries too. And that's about all I eat from this place, though other people say the hot dogs and burgers are good too. Can't say much about the Italian beef, though I know people who had it but it looked generic-ish to me at the time (which was actually before the new owners came around, so...). Been coming here for decades. New management and I have heard the complaints as to the quality dropping but I don't have many of my own. Prices have definitely raised but hands down the best place in the area to get a gyro; long gone are the days of the $5 gyro. Great burgers and breaded wings too. Order the fries extra crispy or well done and consider a small tip to the boys in the back. Note to management, remember the loyal customers, drop your combos by just a few bucks. This place used to have the best gyros in Chicagoland. Since it has come under new management I am not thrilled anymore. The old mgmt used to grill the gyro meat on the grill and same with the pita. This place is pretty amazing! I love the timeliness of their deliver and the way they package the food. I know the packaging adds to the bill but in this case I feel it is worth it because the packaging keeps the food hot and the fries crispy! The gyro lives up to its reputation and order an extra pita (or keep some in your fridge) because it's so stuffed you can make another sandwich so you're actually getting a BOGO! The only reason it's not a five is because I feel they can improve on the fish portion of the fish and chip meal. Ordered food from here twice. Very fast service! First time was traditional gyros and fries. Very good! Fries didn't make it out of the parking lot. Gyros very tasty. Second order for take-out. Again traditional gyros very good. Tried pork gyros. Very disappointed. Not tasty at all. Chicken tenders were more like chicken chips. Flatted out so much you almost couldn't see chicken past the breading. It appeared it was pounded chicken? Mostly breading. The baklava was so tiny it almost felt like the container was empty! Growing up in Glenview I have been to "The Works" since high school. With the rise of chain and franchise fast food restaurants they don't have places like this anymore. A small business that serves quality food their way. There's something about the food that always tastes different than the big name guys. The place is clean and well decorated and the staff friendly and inviting. I heard ownership has changed but the food remains consistently delicious. I got the gyros plate. This is so sad that after going here since 1986 as a kid that the Works has turned so bad. Obviously they have changed owners and although the interior has been remodeled it was a very cheap job but we never came for the ambiance. The main staple was always Gyros but after trying it for the second time in past 3 months it's very clear that this staple has become NASTY. I ordered The gyros plate this time instead of the sandwich to see if we got more meat. NO you get cold raw fries and pay double the money, when I opened the container it STUNK which were the rotting onions so bad, they gave you 2 half slices of tomatoes and worst of all I could have change my engine oil with the amount of oil the gyros were soaking in. I would have given this place 5 star for good food and friendly atmosphere but they forgot my order and had to wait 45-50 minutes ( probably honest mistake). The burger patty is pre cooked and reheated for plating. The patty itself is nearly flavorless. I'm so so so so so sad. It's no longer what it used to be. I used to go once a week to get a cheeseburger, Italian beef, cheese fries and veggie gyro (made as a plate) but stopped going as often when the ownership changed. Almost immediately I noticed the portion sizes slightly got smaller and the taste, while similar, was very slightly different. I went back the other day for the first time in a year and I was so sad because it was so different than what it used to be. The tzatziki sauce which was once creamy and flavorful was slightly gritty/grainy and had a muted yet sour taste, the pita which once was fluffy and delicious had a more whole grain bitter taste. The service is mostly the same with the not friendly but not-not friendly demeanor. I will say the inside of the restaurant has been revamped and is cleaner than it used to be. I would trade it all to go back to the way it used to be though. I haven't been back in a while so I'll need to go back and see if maybe they were just going through a rough patch. read more

After not visiting the Works in over 30 years, I was in the area and had to visit. I was not disappointed For some odd reason, I swear that the employees are the same as my childhood and didn't age. The gyros was as I remembered as was the inside. While the mall around the Works has changed, everything else brought me back to riding my BMX bike over to grab a gyros and fries! No bike brought me here but the memory was the same - outstanding food, great service and friendly people behind the counter (or plexiglass). Disappointed that I didn't come here sooner.
