I've tried this place twice. I only like 2 dishes here, the claypot rice and the century egg congee. Food takes awhile to come out and the service is a little rude. When I come to places like this I'm not expecting superior service I just would like to ask a question without feeling like I'm going to get scolded. Arrived on a Monday night at 6pm and there were plenty of tables available. Service was quick and the restaurant isn't that big so it's easy to get the waitress' attention. We ordered: 1/2 chicken claypot with rice - adding rice is an additional $10 but absolutely worth it!! The chicken was a little dry but overall tasty. I liked that they gave you extra sauce if you wanted more in there. Salted fish & eggplant claypot - this was just cooked in the claypot and not with rice. I ordered vegetable fried rice, because i am vegetarian and did not have many options. in this photo is the "vegetable fried rice". i never been more shocked to receive food before, they acted like i was crazy for saying this is not a real meal. The rice is not fried it is steamed white rice with a few pieces of lettuce. the second photo compares to to my friend's meet dish, which once the meat was eaten looked exactly the same as my sad dish. If you own an asian food restaurant and can not make vegetable fried rice, it's like opening a breakfast place and not being able to make eggs. After arguing with a waiter there about how this is not a meal i finally got a refund and they took the food back (unfortunately to give to someone else, as they asked me if i had eaten it yet). I had to go back a fourth with a women who tried to make me feel crazy, and was lucky enough i can stand up for myself and got a refund but after long time of back and forth. very unhappy with the service and the food. Was craving clay pot rice and had heard great things about this place. It's a smaller restaurant but has some big tables for bigger parties. We came around 6:00 PM on a Saturday and got seated immediately. The place has a very strong family-owned atmosphere with cute kids running around and employees adorably having to chase after them. It was very comforting and reminiscent of my childhood. We got the Hot and Spicy Sichuan Style Chicken and Kohlrabi Clay Pot Rice. Portions are huge, so we brought a lot of food home afterwards. The food comes out pretty fast too! Hot and Spicy Sichuan Style Chicken: 4/5, nice and crispy, the peppers are not overwhelming. Kohlrabi Clay Pot Rice: 5/5, I wasn't expecting to like it this much! Was visiting a good friend who recently moved to the city and she took me here for lunch. I haven't had clay pot rice in a while so was excited to give this spot a try. We got their Kohlrabi clay pot rice and steam scallop with vermicelli. The clay pot rice was flavorful and crispy. Scallop vermicelli had a good amount of scallops and was also very flavorful. We stopped by for dinner. Taishan is one of few Chinatown restaurants open later into the evening. The restaurant was packed when we arrived, and the only table available was the large table next to the register where staff eat, so they cleared it off and gave us 2 seats there to avoid needing to wait for another party to leave. Kohlrabi clay pot rice was great - lots of flavor, the kohlrabi was well-seasoned and soft without being mushy, lots of crispy rice at the bottom, and a giant portion (as it should be given it costs $30). Authentic taishan flavor! It tastes like the restaurant in Kaiping or taishan in China. The claypot rice is really good and the portion is huge (enough for 4 ppl). Dry fish with pork meat (咸鱼蒸肉饼）is my personal favorite because it has a unique flavor. The pork patties absorbed the salty and fresh taste of the salted fish, and the soup was added while steaming, which elevated both ingredients. The server mainly speaks Cantonese or mandarin, and they do speak English. Just be a little patient with them, and ur food will be served right away :) read more

The waitress did no chit chat, just straight to the point. We shared a couple dishes: -Sichuan chicken was probably my favorite, but it def wasn't the best Sichuan chicken I've had and was a bit heavy on the breading. -sweet & sour soup was a bit too thick and sweet for my liking, definitely wouldn't order again. -Mapo tofu was definitely not spicy enough and was lacking in flavor -pan fried wontons were perfectly made and very tasty -egg tarts were tasty and sweet Overall the food is decent, and reasonably priced. My biggest complaint was the noise levels in the restaurant - the owner appeared to have a young child that enjoyed shaking a giant glass jar of coins, making it nearly impossible to have a conversation at our table for most of our meal. Everyone in the restaurant seemed bothered, but the owners didn't really seem to care. If I come back, I would definitely want to try the clay pot rice. this is our go-to late night spot for Chinese food in SF. sweet and sour chicken taishan fried rice salt and pepper spare ribs garlic with pea sprouts ma pa tofu i have been here many times over the years and was just here twice this week. i have gotten soups and other dishes, but staying with the classics above work the best. if you are craving dim sum at 2:00am, this is the only spot open. the pork xiao long bao and other dimsum can sometimes be ok / more to be desired. when it isn't busy, the dim sum tends to better. i have been here for tables of 2 to 10+. there is always room late night, but it can get busy at times. this is a family joint, so sometimes following by walking up to the staff / owners at the cash register works best. this is kinda the ordering style in Asia when things get really busy, so don't be shy. there are a lot of regulars here and people might be speaking directly with the owners, so it can get noisy. think of it like a busy diner, when it comes to the sound level, and customers just speaking loudly from their tables. all my guests have a good time here and really enjoy the food! read more

Do not skip the roasted chicken! This whole roasted chicken gets broken down right at your table as the server is hand shredding it for you. The skin is a bit on the chewy side, although the meat is extremely tender all throughout. It's roasted with this rich, sweet and savory marinade that enhances the chicken's flavor. My table also ordered the house special fried rice which has egg and Chinese sausage mixed in, but it also has some shredded lettuce which was different to me but surprisingly refreshing. Sunday night around 2 am, we were looking for a Chinese spot to grab some food. Yelp showed two other places open but after driving there, both were closed. Luckily Taishan Cuisine didn't let us down and was actually open (until 3am!) like their page suggested. Want to start off by saying that this is a classic hole in the wall spot run by the cutest family. If you're expecting 10/10 service by American standards, this probably won't be your cup of tea; but if you want a homey, intimate vibe, this is it! No frills, just great food and fun time. We were seated upon entering and given menus. Nice warm tea (using actual tea leaves!) was provided. We ordered pan fried pork baos and beef chow fun. The beef chow fun came out about in about 10 minutes and the buns came maybe 5-10 minutes after that. The beef in the chow fun was extremely tender and yummy, there was a decent amount of meat but would have loved a bit more for the price. Bug portion, personally I would have wanted a bit more sauce on the noodles, but it still tasted good! Pan fried baos were exactly what I was hoping for -- the crisp at the bottom was just 10/10 and the filling was juicy and flavorful. Overall, I would definitely come back (maybe next time not at 2am) when I'm looking for a cozy Chinese spot. read more

Very authentic Cantonese dishes. We ordered the Roast Chicken, a House Special, and it is a must. The whole chicken came out perfect. It was the moistest and most tender chicken ever. We ordered the duck with tofu which came juicy and delicious. Yam sprouts sautéed with garlic were very fresh and bountiful. The beef chow fun had such fresh rice noddles, classically wok-fried with bean sprouts. The portions were generous. We could not stop eating and we had leftovers. Do not be dissuaded by the lack of signage on Broadway. Many people who were locals walk in and order the clay pot or the greens throughout the day. Hadn't been to Chinatown in a long time. Streets are not as busy at night but the restaurants are getting a lot of tourist and local love. I was surprised how good their food here was. Porridge was flavorful. Fried pancake was really good, light and flaky. Tasty too. Their Chow Fun was my favorite. Not sure if they make their own noodles but it was delicious. It was late and my friend, Ray, and I were on our way to the Hilton Union Square and starving. I knew that Chinatown has restaurants open for late night dining. Via yelp search, we found Taishan Cuisine that is open until 3 AM every day of the week. We arrived around midnight on Sunday night/early Monday morning of October 13/14, 2024...right before the rush started. The venue does not have a private lot, but we found street parking right in front of the restaurant. Upon arrival, we were seated within two minutes. The place was brightly lit and until more and more customers started arriving, I didn't realize that they have two dining rooms. I didn't look around very much, but the cleanliness level looked to be fair. Though, when I asked Ray how the bathroom was, he said, "You don't want to use it," telling me that it looked clean, but you could tell that "something happened in there." That was enough for me to avoid the restroom, no elaboration needed. Ray observed that most of Taishan Cuisine's patrons were Chinese and this convinced him that the food must be good here. Below are the items that we ordered. House Special chow Mein ($15.95) - The noodles appeared to be made of those found in instant ramen packages, but I actually liked this dish with the Chinese sausage. I couldn't touch the pieces of pork belly. Pan fried pork dumplings (6) ($11.95) - These tasty potstickers were served with a side bowl of a white seasoning. Ray thought it was salt, but it was sugar. I enjoyed these dumplings and the sweet addition added another level of flavour. hot and sour soup ($13.95) - I was not a fan of this. There were some textures that were oddly hard. Ray found it to be a bit too spicy. Shrimp dumplings (4) ($10.95) - Ray really liked Taishan's har gow. They weren't bad, but I have had better at other places. Beef w/chinese Broccoli(cauliflower) ($18) - OK. The meat didn't appeal to me much because it wasn't as lean as I expected. When Ray said that a piece of tendon got stuck in his throat, I ate only the veggies from that point on. This dish is not worth the price. Siu mai (4) ($9.95) - This was Ray's favourite of all the items that we ordered. I found the flavour to be a little off than what I am used to, so I ate only one piece. Service was not bad, but it was a bit challenging to flag someone down to ask for things. We were one of only three tables of customers who did not speak Chinese. Perhaps the language barrier was the reason why we had difficulty figuring out who were staff members. The waitress who served us was the main server and, thankfully, she spoke English. Ray and I were amused by how she busily tended to everyone...with a young infant in tow, fully asleep in a carrier on her back. Interestingly, there was also a young child, no older than four or five years, hanging out and crying at the hostess counter. He was probably tired and ready for bed since it was past midnight. Needless to say, the environment was very interesting, to say the least. After we left and made it to our hotel, Ray realized that he forgot his murse at Taishan. When we called them, they assured us that they had his bag, so we quickly returned and easily picked it up. They definitely earned extra points for this in Ray's book. Would I return? Maybe...if I need to find a late-night eatery in San Francisco and nothing else is open. read more
