This place is divey and delicious! Kids eat free on Tuesdays (I believe) and we ordered lots of great things to share. My husband ordered tons of seafood and loved it. I had the pizza and brussel sprouts which were delicious. The place was so cozy and intimate. We had a great time! It was a bar yet wonderfully family friendly. The beers on special and available regularly were outstanding. Servers made great recommendations and were very attentive to our needs throughout the meal. Came here for happy hour. Everything else was closed on H st and me and my friends ran across this place. The music selection is all classics It is a beer house and we don't drink beer. However the bartender made some accommodations and was able to whip us up some Margaritas. Now the HH food is the star of the show. We had two pick 3s for $15 and tried all the mussels. All the mussels were delicious and fresh. The Brussels sprouts are fantastic and crispy! The chicken sandwich was well done and fried to perfection. Overall it was a great experience. Some of the best beers in the world from the best beer manufacturing country in the world, Belgium, and food to go with it...Yes, please. The bartender was great. She actually knew her beers and wasn't just back there pouring without knowledge (nothing bothers me more from a bartender; see one of my previous, very brief bar reviews). She convinced me to branch out to find some new flavors aside from my Chouffe preferences and I appreciate that. I also went with the steak sandwich option as opposed to the burger that initially caught my eye. It was a solid, but messy choice as the bread used falls completely apart spilling the sandwich everywhere. A proper French baguette would have been ideal as opposed to a soggy-ing hoagie roll. I got a dessert also, but mostly because I was teetering on drunk and needed something else to soak up the libations--enter the Belgian waffle. It wasn't memorable. It reminded me of the ones you get from the vending machine in the metro stations in Paris but luckily with less added sugar so that was appreciated. This was a solid spot with a small ruelle (alleyway) in Brussels kind of feel. I'll come back before the impending tariffs make it too expensive to import European alcohol. read more

Granville Moore's is a DC institution that I've been going to on and off since about 2011. They are one of the best places in DC to get Belgian beer, mussels, and frites. On my recent visit, I shared two mussels ($26 each) and one frites ($10) among three people. This was enough food, especially with the bread they include for the mussel broth (we got three baskets). We had a couple beers to go along with it. We had the Champignons mussels with crimini, oyster, shitake & button mushrooms in white wine cream sauce plus the Bouillabaisse mussels with seafood, saffron, garlic, tomato. I usually get the classic Mariniere (white wine, garlic, herbs). Both types were good. The bouillabaisse reminded me of the Mariniere in terms of broth flavor. I didn't get any tomato. It came with some shrimp and white fish pieces. The champignons came with a cream sauce that wasn't too thick. It was also good but I wish I had a bit stronger flavor. One of the downsides of mussels as a food is that they are served in broth, yet the broth doesn't really stick to them. Bread is necessary to mop up the sauce. The fries were excellent: thin, extra crispy, perfectly salted. They come with dipping sauces but I didn't need them. Our beers were all good as expected. We had a few from the happy hour menu. GM offers a good happy hour with food discounts but I wish they offered a slightly better beer happy hour. The beers with the better discount ($5 or $7 each) are are canned, not much to my liking, and don't really represent their Belgian beer menu. A few other beers on draft are discounted only $1 which makes them steep at $12-$14 each. When I visited, they were out of a couple, further reducing the selection. Service was friendly if a bit slow, because one bartender was serving all the tables and manning the bar on the first floor. I love GM's decor -- a really old school, wood and brick spot. It's unique in DC. I would recommend it on the decor alone. read more

My parents have been coming here for years on their date nights, but I've only recently visited and it's definitely going to be a staple for me. If you are looking for a dive bar feel, but have a penchant for Belgian beer and want something more than the standard fries and a burger, this is the perfect place. Wow wow wow! So glad my sis took me here, because this was my first time having moules-frites (mussels and french fries). I've always liked mussels, but Granville Moore just brought it to a whole 'nother level. There's a reason why their mussels have won so many awards over the years. Apparently, they also have quite the Belgium and craft beer selection. We had the mariniere (white wine, garlic, herbs) and the bleu (blue cheese, pork belly, red onions, spinach, white wine, lemon) and they were absolutely delicious! The fried Brussel sprouts were amazing. I don't want to know how much oil was used, but the texture was fried to crisp perfection. Now you may be wondering where the name of this unassuming tavern on H street comes from. The restaurant is named in honor of the physician who practiced in the very same building and provided pro bono medical care to the community. If I lived in the area, I would be here every Monday for their $12 mussels specials or their killer happy hour (Wednesday-Monday 5-7PM). What a local gem! Definitely stopping by here again next time I'm in town. read more

Granville Moore's is a hidden gem (?) in the H Street Corridor, with amazing drinks, food and ambiance. I'm not sure if it's a hidden gem, but nobody I knew really talked about it much. This place deserves way more praise!! The Belgian beers are delicious as always, and the menu is extensive. Reminds me a lot of Monk's Cafe in Philly, which is also fantastic. Service here is really fast and friendly! The bartenders work super hard as do the kitchen staff. You can tell they've been around for a while and know what they're doing. To eat, I had the mussels and fries. I had never had mussels before, and they set a pretty high bar here! They were super tasty, and I really enjoyed being able to dip the fries in the yummy sauces they provide. I love the vibe in here. Granvilles is an institution and a truly unique experience. They offer Belgian beers galore and a large selection of Belgian specialties. They are also one of the OG spots of the H Street revitalization. They are known for having the best mussels in town, but we are not mussel fans. What are we to do? Frites, of course. The frites here are spectacular, truly top notch bar food. Even better, just like in any legit bar in Brussels, they have a cavalcade of tasty dipping sauces. The truffle mayo is as good as any we actually had in Belgium. So good. The old bay aioli is excellent, too. They have tables and a bar downstairs and a separate upstairs area, as well. Head to the back to get to the stairs. You can make reservations, and around 7 on Saturday we saw many reservations come in, or you can try your luck with walking in. We walked in and grabbed the only two seats open at the downstairs bar. A delirium nocturnum on draft with frites and mac and cheese gnocchi really hit the spot. The one downside is the service. It was excrutiatingly slow, some of the worst we have ever experienced. We had to ask to order at least 3 times before she would actually take our order, and she seemed to actively avoid making eye contact with people. I am not sure it was the server's fault, though because they had one person for the entire downstairs, including bar and tables. That is a terrible setup. The place was packed, even two people would have had trouble keeping up. We enjoyed everything, but the competition on the block will offer a less aggravating experience. read more

I stumbled upon this adorable restaurant/bar as an escape from the rain after a disappointing ramen meal. I was still hungry and was excited to find a Belgian restaurant, as there aren't any in the city where I live. I'm so glad I found Granville Moore's and I will definitely be back! I ordered the mussels mariniere and they were fantastic!! Incredibly flavorful, cooked perfectly, and served with delicious fresh bread to mop up the buttery garlic heaven left over in the bowl. The beer selection was extensive, but I didn't dive in during this visit. Service was quick and very friendly. The building itself has a tremendous amount of history, although I'm not sure what the story is as the historic sign was outside and it was raining when I visited. Best Mussels in town. I'm not afraid to say it, and neither is Granville Moore's! I've consistently come back for the moules-frites, the proper name for Belgium-style mussels and fries. Pick from a list of can't miss flavors, from the classic Mariniere or the more adventurous Bleu. Dipping the bread into the sauce is an essential part of the experience. The decor is a little drab, the tables and chair well worn in. But there is a huge selection of Belgium beers. It is one of the few places to get Duvel on tap. The staff is happy to walk you through the extensive beer list to help find something to your taste. A few things to keep in mind: no take-out or left-overs, so come ready to eat. Happy hour is daily. Currently, the mussels special is on Sundays. Give it a try, especially if you haven't had mussels before, you won't be disappointed. read more

I have SUCH MIXED FEELINGS. Pros: Good beer selection and knowledgeable servers to recommend said beer. Pat, our server, was in charge of the tunes upstairs and they were poppin'. In between: I had the special, which was fish on fries and it was cooked perfectly but the seasoning was kind of whatever. The fries had clearly waited for the fish under a heat lamp and had WAY too much curry sauce on them, leaving them both dry and soggy. Maybe the non-specials are better? Cons: We saw a mouse. It's an older building and it was upstairs and maybe it was just a single mouse. A scout mouse. A single errant rodent who lost his way. But, this is why I never found Ratatouille as charming as so many did. I do not care for rodents near my food. Also the bathrooms were HORRIFYING. I took a random visit to this H street tavern on a Sunday night in search of food. It's like your average tavern hosting a long wooden bar surrounded by ample wooden booth seating. I came and took a seat at the bar it was near closing but the waitress was nice enough to still let me put in a few orders of food to go along with the glass of Chardonnay I ordered before the kitchen closed. The bar was still pretty lively even as the closing hours were approaching. They've got a pretty decent menu ranging from vegan buffalo finger appetizers to pan seared salmon entrees to compliment their long list of bottle and canned beer options. I went with the calamari and their doctor's wings which are essentially smoked wings with a honey bbq glaze. The food came out pretty quickly, the calamari probably could have been fried a little longer but overall a solid appetizer and I was pleasantly surprised with how good the wings were, smoked but not completely dried out where you could still appreciate the flavor of the glaze. Aside from not having any ranch available in the establishment (minor details) I had no complaints, service from the bartenders was excellent and I'll be returning to try out a few of their entrées. read more

I enjoy dive bars, but this place was almost uncomfortably divey. So much so that I found myself constantly looking around to make sure that there were no unwanted visitors (of the insect or animal varieties) running around. Thankfully none were found. Whew! Ick factor aside, the food was ok. Just ok. I came for Restaurant Week and ordered the Winter Salad as a starter, the Steak Au Poivre for dinner, and the Apple and Pear cobbler for dessert. While I was waiting for my meal to arrive I ordered a Kentucky Mule. It was not very well made: I could hardly taste the bourbon and the drink itself was weak and not well balanced. The Winter Salad was good. Nothing groundbreaking or exceptional about it. The steak was gristly and several bites were a little tough. The frites were delicious when topped with the pepper sauce (which was really nothing more than a mushroom gravy), but were fairly underwhelming on their own. The Apple and Pear cobbler was definitely my favorite part of the meal. Tart and sweet with a positively divine crust. I only wish that the portion size was bigger. It was an interesting take on one of my favorite desserts and I enjoyed it very much. The service was friendly but not really attentive. My server never came by to check on how the meal was going, refill water, or offer me another cocktail. However, she and a couple of other staff members made sure to clear plates almost as soon as I put my fork down. read more

First time in D.C. and at Granville Moore's Where do I even begin! This place is such a hidden gem! As you walk in you feel like you're walking into the 18th century. I was recommended this spot by a friend and she told me get the MUSSELS. All I can say is WOAH. DEFINITELY GET THE MUSSLES!!!!! I stopped by on a solo adventure and the ambiance was super laid back and friendly. There was a basketball game going on so there were some fans that were super riled up LOL! I ordered the Spicy Thai Mussles accompanied by bread and a Lager. It was perfect. I had never had mussles before because I am Latina and we don't really eat those LOL but I was ready to give it a try. Some highlights - I want to thank the bartender for being so sweet. She reassured me the Spicy Thai Mussles were the best option. I told her I was traveling solo so she recommended a few spots in the area and told me what areas I wanted to stay away from by myself. - I learned how to eat Mussles - THE COCONUT flavor in the Thai Mussles WOAH!!!!!! Is this review biased because of a World Series win? Yes. Is it still a good place to go? Yes. What a night!! I'm not even a Nationals fan but since the Nats knocked out the Cardinals, I figured I'd root for the home team. Amazingly, Granville Moore's had plenty of seats upstairs, so we had a place to park ourselves for the evening. The TVs were on, the food and drink specials were excellent ($5), and the fans were pumped. We had two orders of wings - one buffalo and one barbecue - and they were so incredible. Layered, balanced flavors. A little smokey, a little peppery, a little sweet. 10/10. We also had the champignons mussels. I would have slurped up all of the cream sauce without bread but when we got bread, it was a heavenly pairing. Had a great time! #babyshark! read more

Loved the inside of this bar. We sat at the second floor bar. The food was delicious, especially the brussel sprouts. I don't like mussels so I just had the soup with bread of my husband's Thai dish. It was addicting and had a very nice kick. I am a spicy wimp, but I kept having more because it was so yummy. Maybe it's just that they treat me so well... what I -do- know is that the folks at Dr. Granville Moore's Brickyard totally take care of me. There's a reason why yelpers clearly love this joint, and it's not because Pat (one of the owners/bartenders) cranks up the volume on Kelly Clarkson. Speaking of, where can one hear our little Ms. Independent and the theme from Star Wars during the same meal? Yeah. Bobby Flay chose a tough opponent when going up against executive chef Teddy Folkman for this upcoming July 8 premier of Throwdown. I just had the moules fromage bleu with bacon, shallots, and white wine. Decadence. The mussels at Restaurant Eve have the perfect consistency. These mussels add a dimension of rich savory flavor that simply soar above the competition. Beware, though - there was just a tiny bit of grit in our mollusks. We also split the fish of the day - a corvina. Typical white fish is flaky, right? Yeah - this one definitely was... but more than that, it was almost creamy in consistency. Served with an incredible ramp pesto (the greens, not the slope) and GMB's renowned frites, this easily equaled, if not surpassed, the succulent mussels. Speaking of decadence, save room for the rich brownie dessert with bourbon caramel. It may not look like a ton of dessert, but once you take a nibble of it, you'll fast discover that it's more than enough for even the biggest sweet tooth. I haven't even touched on how awesome everyone is here - both servers that I've had the pleasure of meeting here (Dee and Ty) have been chill, friendly, ready with recommendations, knowledgeable about the fare, and easy to flag down. I'm beginning to see why I can't talk our crew into coming here with me. It's just okay so far. Bread was okay, but only there for dipping (no side fats offered). Unfortunately my moules mosterd were sort of underwhelming-- one that didn't open, and swimming in a relatively unappealing Dijon thyme broth. I ended up noshing on the bread plain. Leeks were fine. I wouldn't call these chorizo lardons, rather they were slices of highly processed sausage. Our herbed large frites were the highlight of the meal, fried hard enough for nongreasy snacking but terrible for dipping in broth. Sadly, a few were bordering on burnt. The sauces we chose were truffle and curry mayos, though next time I might try horseradish over the truffle. Or maybe I can finagle them into spicing them instead of saucing on the side... I could get behind smoked salt or salt & vinegar. Jukebox near the front by the bar. Kitchen closes at 11:30 pm, and Amanda was nice about hustling my order in when we strolled in at 11:27. (She also thought we were brother and sister, but that's a whole 'nother Filipino vs. Taiwanese story.) There wasn't anything on tap I was particularly keen about, but not a bad Belgian selection. I'll probably come back with my coworker, I'm sure he can't resist a cheesesteak or bison burger post-Fruit Bat. If only seafood were more agreeable to him! The curry mussels sound like they have potential and I originally didn't see the pork belly in the moules bleu. Update: Three and a half stars. They wanted our business enough that our party of six got hooked up with the storage room. Quality of food was better this time-- definitely not for the calorically shy. Steak and cheese was sandwiched in toasted, heavily buttered baguette halves. Kraut rocks was decent, naked chunks of porkraut sausage that was light on its namesake. Fennel sliced to 3/16" thick, mixed in with a better batch of mussels Rich broth, great for dipping and I killed the bowl to find lots of coarse pepper in the dregs. I am not as impressed by this place as everyone else here. I had the fromage bleu mussels and a small order of fries. I loved the different choices of sauce that goes with the frites, although I wish the horsey cream sauce had more kicks to it. The frites themselves weren't crispy or hot enough for my taste. I prefer the extra crispy and thin cut frites at Brasserie Beck's. I usually end up ordering some kind of bivalve in a restaurant, so I have had lots of mussles from different places. The ones here just didn't work for me. I appreciate tender mussels, but some of the ones I had were almost raw. The blue cheese was too overpowering and the spanich was just a bystander and didn't add anything to the dish. There were also a couple of gritty ones as expected. The best mussels I ever had are still Blacksalt and Eve's. Beer choice is excellent. Don't ask for crappy pilsners here people! The space is cozy, maybe too cozy. We ordered pickup today for the first time since the switch the Granville Pasta Place, and were understandably worried to see a neighborhood favorite transforming into something else. I first came to this place many years ago, about a year after they had beaten Bobby Flay, when he did his throw down shows. Came back tonight and was not disappointed in the least. It is a quaint, small, yet amazing place that everyone needs to go visit if you're in the DC area. The service was awesome and the bartender was amazing. The list of Belgian Beers; draft, bottled and canned is quite large and offers most flavor profiles available in the Belgian beer market. The food though is off the hook. It is a mussels and pomme frites place. They have five different flavor profiles for their mussels to choose from and the portion size is amazing. The crusty bread for dipping in the broth truly makes this fun. The fries are tasty with six different aiolis to choose from as well. My fav was the samurai sauce because it has siracha in it!!! Yelp reviews talked me into going here with a friend during our epic road trip adventure. This place is tiny, like a lot of places we stopped at on our journey. Our waitress was very nice, and we sat in the back porch section (they had some mad heaters going that made it warmer outside than in). It felt like someone's garage/shed packed with random crap that also served food. I originally wanted the bison sandwich but they were out, so I opted for the grilled chicken sandwich. It came with onions, cheese, and chipotle mayo (and the mayo actually had a bite unlike a lot of chipotle mayos that tasted more like mayo than spice) and a side of fries. I also decided to order the fried brie as a starter, and was very happy with it, even though I felt like it lacked a decent amount of apple compote. If we were in town for a few more days I would have gone back to get that bison sandwich though, especially after my friend gave me a small piece of his bison steak. Maybe another time! It was also nice to see the owner/manager (not sure) chatting it up with some of the clientele. read more

To repeat what others have said, "their moules and frites are very good." We ordered the small order of frites, which was still a lot of fries, with 3 dipping sauces (1 sauce comes with the small order and additional sauces are 25 cents each). We had the garlic ranch sauce, chipotle mayo, and truffle mayo. My favorite was the truffle mayo and my daughter's was the chipotle mayo and both of us were indifferent to the garlic ranch. We also had the Tequila Lime Moules (which were on special for $12 instead of $17) and the bulgogi flatbread. Both were very good and a little spicy. All of this food plus a Diet Coke and a Belgian beer cost $41 plus tip. read more

I have been here about 5 times for dinner/drinks and I have never been disappointed. They have a wonderful brunch, great drinks and very good service! The outside of this place is very deceiving. It looks pretty run down! The first time I arrived here to meet a friend I was certain that I was at the wrong spot. Inside the decor and setup isn't all the impressive either. It's quite small and not very fancy. However the delicious food and overall professionalism make this place a neighborhood gem! My last visit to Granville was this past Sunday. I made a reservation for 11. By the time we left the place was packed!! Our server was super friendly. I had the hash bowl and my friend had a breakfast sandwich. Everything was delicious including the coffee and the seasonal mimosa. I also want to note that I LOVE the mussels here. They go perfectly with a side of their yummy frites. There are some delicious dipping sauces that go with the fries as well. My favorite is the old bay ketchup. yum!
