This restaurant was bustling on a Saturday afternoon. They have about seven or eight tables indoors and a couple tables outside. There were also several picnic benches around the side of the building, but I wasn't clear if they belonged to the restaurant. You order at the register and they call out your name when your food is ready. They have a ton of vegan/vegetarian options, as well as a great breakfast/brunch menu. I ordered the egg and cheese biscuit. The cheddar jalapeño biscuit was delicious. It was buttery and dense. The flavors were mild, but the sandwich was the perfect portion size. I also got a side of the vegan bacon. It was rubbery and tough to chew. Would not recommend. My husband enjoyed the breakfast burrito. We also shared the buffalo cauliflower. The cauliflower pieces were well coated in buffalo sauce and very flavorful. I also got the Don't Kale Me juice. It was tangy, citrusy, and refreshing. The Deep Roots smoothie was also quite tasty. They have free self-serve water and the employees were quick to wipe down tables so they were clean for the next party. Looking forward to coming again! read more

In search of vegan dishes I searched Yelp in the Hawthorne NY area and it took me to Sleepy Hollow NY where I scored big time . Going inside Grass Roots Kitchen was a breath of fresh air. The aesthetics put me in the mind of earth day and such beautiful paintings on the wall and flowers and greenery throughout. Grass Roots Kitchen offers have high tops dining as well as, regular dining, and outside dining. The dining area is pretty large, length wise and beautifully attractive. I ordered the egg and cheese biscuit with the help of the cashier, I didn't get her name and it's on the receipt but I threw it out. Even though this was not a vegan dish, who could pass on a collosal cheese biscuit. The egg was a nice accompaniment to this cheese biscuit also. The lady that gave me the biscuits said, wow! That smells nice. I thought she was giving me a compliment on the order until I sniffed the bag. Normally I don't do well with my sense of smell but, boy oh boy! That was a gooooooood smelling biscuit. And the taste, it tastes so good, it makes you want to slap yo momma. (Don't do it, it just makes you want to slap her.) Needless to say, I really enjoyed this cheese biscuit. In hindsight I guess I could have grabbed a hot drink, maybe next time, and there will be a next time because I told the lady that this was my first time and at the restuarant and I'm new in the area. This is a fast casual place for either breakfast or lunch. There is a parking lot. The portions are the same as Shake Shack and Bareburger. Prices are in the area of Chipotle, Shake Shack and Bareburger. Service is the same as any fast casual/fast food place. I tried the lentil burger, falafel burger, buckwheat pancakes, salted caramel brownie, fries, and tea. The tea is a rip off. It is $3 for a tiny cup. It is even smaller than Starbucks' small. After reviewing the menu we decided to stay and give it a go! SO GLAD WE DID! I had the butternut squash soup and Oh My was it delicious! A very generous serving creamy thick and slightly sweet topped with a swirl of cream and toasted pumpkin seeds! You could taste the ginger but it was not offensive! I paired it with the Fried Oyster Po Boy - home run on taste again! Stacked high with lightly battered very well seasoned oyster mushrooms on a hearty bun topped with lettuce - house made pickles- lettuce- and spicy aioli - THIS SANDWICH WAS THE BOMB! My hubby enjoyed his Salmon Burger topped with a basil aioli along with other trimmings! I had a nice Strawberry Hibiscus Tea/Lemonade it was perfect by my taste as no added sugar which I prefer! We finished it off by sharing a butternut apple bread pudding with caramel sauce! Boy was it good. Again not sickly sweet just right - rich caramel and huge chunks of apple. The staff is very friendly even checking to ensure nothing had nuts due to my allergies and the place is organic feeling and they locally source. Cute little cafe/restaurant located in Tarrytown, only a 5min walk from the Tarrytown metro north station. The vibe is warm, cozy & simple with a good amount of seating. The menu is very vegan-friendly! Not 100% vegan but tons of vegan options for breakfast & lunch. There are also vegan baked goods! I had the vegan tofu "egg", avocado and shiitake "bacon" breakfast sandwich- so good!! Super satisfying and exactly what I was craving. The tofu egg texture was so yummy and went so well with the avo and mushrooms. The bun they used was also really good- seemed like some sort of vegan brioche? I also had the ginger carrot soup which was tasty and perfect on a chilly fall day. Flavor was good and not too salty. For sweets- I tried the vegan banana bread which really hit the spot. I LOVE banana bread and always happy to see a vegan one. Great banana taste and sprinkled with walnuts. I also got the vegan gluten free pumpkin donut- this was baked not fried. I thought this was a bit dry and hard. The frosting was so good, but the donut part itself could be more moist. Service was friendly and fast. Overall I had a good experience. This is some very hard-core vegan and regular food. They are very friendly and welcoming there. I've enjoyed my mushroom sandwich very much. It was delicious! Then I went another time and had their Philly cheese steak burrito and it was gross. The fake meat was too chewy and didn't have any flavor there. I I also had some of their banana bread, but it was just way too thick and not enough seasoning. I haven't tried everything there, but I will say the mushroom is the best. We used to come here often on the weekend, always enjoyed the interesting take on lunch, but today is disappointing. First, there are no napkins in the takeout bag. I didn't see any near the pickup counter so just assumed there would be. Second, there is no beet ketchup in with the unappetizing root tater tots. Third, the only flavor in the banana kale peanut butter oat milk smoothie is the oat milk. Fourth, the root smash burger is dry and uninteresting. If there was ever a place that would convince me to adopt a vegan lifestyle, it would 100% be this place. One of my friends chose this place for lunch as she is vegan. Walking in, I didn't know what to order, but after carefully examining the menu, I choose the vegan "Philly cheesesteak" burrito. (The burrito was made of Seitan instead of actual beef.) HOLY MOLY. The flavor was amazing. I never knew how delish vegan food could be and this place certainly introduced me to new foods and flavors in such a great way. The staff was also incredibly kind and eager to accommodate any special diets or allergies ... which is super hard to find these days in a restaurant. My only wish is that there had been an an option for bottled water. Maybe there was and I just completely missed it. All the drink options that I had never heard of was a tad much. I just had the best experience here! First time and I ordered the grain free bread sunflower grilled cheese. I cannot get over how amazing this simple sandwich tasted. So. So. So Good! Stopped here for lunch for one week straight and worked my way through their menu. Not a vegan but am plant based and this spot doesn't make me miss meat at all! The philly "cheesesteak" is my favorite. Love it with a side of their root fries. It's a strange experience to feel like you're overindulging in fast food but it's all veggies! The pescetarian loved the oyster mushroom po boy. The carnivore loved the cheeseburger with bacon. But the hit of the meal were the drinks....the mellow yellow mango smoothie was light and tasty; the signature deep roots was extraordinary...mango, blueberry, orange, and beet was tart and tangy. Came in for the first time while visiting sleepy hollow and we were looking for gluten free and vegan options but there wasn't much except grass roots. We actually used to go to a place called Grass Roots in Jacksonville FL a few years ago which was a natural market and juice bar tho. We were pleasantly surprised to find this establishment had so many organic options, many of which could be made gluten free or already were gf and/or vegan. We didn't have to stress which we usually do when we go out to lunch. We were so happy with our food! We had a cheese burger with gf roll which the roll was one of the best gf bread/rolls we ever had periodT! The chocolate chip gf vegan cookies were delicious too and right texture-- I'm super picky about a lot of gf foods and everything here was sooooo good! The service was excellent and smiley too, the lovely girls who took our order and served us were so patient and understanding of our allergen needs and that we hadn't been there before. The prices weren't astronomical either like so many organic and vegan spots tend to be these days. I expected to pay a lot more bc an hour north in Poughkeepsie this meal would've cost me well over $60 and I spent less than $40 here. 10/10 would return in a Heartbeat. And the artwork is so lovely throughout, the bathroom was very clean and there was plenty of seating and space which is harder to get in restaurants around here and I'm very much an introvert and empath so being around energy in tight spaces is anxiety inducing for me. However, within the narrative, there are portions that exceed the overall rating. The Staff (5 stars): They were not only accommodating with our questions, but they were also kind in their individual demeanors. They all wore a mask and handled their positions with a careful and relaxed attitude. The establishment (4 stars): The entire place was orderly and clean. The bathrooms were not disgusting but they could use a little attention Inside the establishment limited seating is available but, if that runs out, they do have seating outside. The Food (2 stars): This is where the review gets personally subjective. There are two things in a restaurant that simply I do not like: small portions and expensive ala cart food items. My family and I ordered two smoothies (very grainy and watery), two orders of fries (tasty), a chicken salad sandwich (zero flavor), a cheeseburger (very thin patty), a beet burger (very thin and mushy), and a chicken grain bowl (small and void of taste), all for a grand total of $75. The issue with this was that the price is extremely high for such small portions of mediocre food. We had to order fries because they did not come with the burgers or sandwiches (this is what I mean by expensive ala cart food items). Truly, the food was not bad, but it did have zero flavor and the cost was outrageous. If you are a vegan at heart, you will probably enjoy this place, and that's ok. However, if you are not and you are looking to try something new or different, save your money...you will leave frustrated and disappointed. read more
