In search of vegan dishes I searched Yelp in the Hawthorne NY area and it took me to Sleepy Hollow NY where I scored big time . Going inside Grass Roots Kitchen was a breath of fresh air. The aesthetics put me in the mind of earth day and such beautiful paintings on the wall and flowers and greenery throughout. Grass Roots Kitchen offers have high tops dining as well as, regular dining, and outside dining. The dining area is pretty large, length wise and beautifully attractive. I ordered the egg and cheese biscuit with the help of the cashier, I didn't get her name and it's on the receipt but I threw it out. Even though this was not a vegan dish, who could pass on a collosal cheese biscuit. The egg was a nice accompaniment to this cheese biscuit also. The lady that gave me the biscuits said, wow! That smells nice. I thought she was giving me a compliment on the order until I sniffed the bag. Normally I don't do well with my sense of smell but, boy oh boy! That was a gooooooood smelling biscuit. And the taste, it tastes so good, it makes you want to slap yo momma. (Don't do it, it just makes you want to slap her.) Needless to say, I really enjoyed this cheese biscuit. In hindsight I guess I could have grabbed a hot drink, maybe next time, and there will be a next time because I told the lady that this was my first time and at the restuarant and I'm new in the area. This restaurant was bustling on a Saturday afternoon. They have about seven or eight tables indoors and a couple tables outside. There were also several picnic benches around the side of the building, but I wasn't clear if they belonged to the restaurant. You order at the register and they call out your name when your food is ready. They have a ton of vegan/vegetarian options, as well as a great breakfast/brunch menu. I ordered the egg and cheese biscuit. The cheddar jalapeño biscuit was delicious. It was buttery and dense. The flavors were mild, but the sandwich was the perfect portion size. I also got a side of the vegan bacon. It was rubbery and tough to chew. Would not recommend. My husband enjoyed the breakfast burrito. We also shared the buffalo cauliflower. The cauliflower pieces were well coated in buffalo sauce and very flavorful. I also got the Don't Kale Me juice. It was tangy, citrusy, and refreshing. The Deep Roots smoothie was also quite tasty. I also had the ginger carrot soup which was tasty and perfect on a chilly fall day. Flavor was good and not too salty. For sweets- I tried the vegan banana bread which really hit the spot. This is some very hard-core vegan and regular food. They are very friendly and welcoming there. I've enjoyed my mushroom sandwich very much. It was delicious! Then I went another time and had their Philly cheese steak burrito and it was gross. The fake meat was too chewy and didn't have any flavor there. However, within the narrative, there are portions that exceed the overall rating. The Staff (5 stars): They were not only accommodating with our questions, but they were also kind in their individual demeanors. They all wore a mask and handled their positions with a careful and relaxed attitude. The establishment (4 stars): The entire place was orderly and clean. The bathrooms were not disgusting but they could use a little attention Inside the establishment limited seating is available but, if that runs out, they do have seating outside. The Food (2 stars): This is where the review gets personally subjective. There are two things in a restaurant that simply I do not like: small portions and expensive ala cart food items. My family and I ordered two smoothies (very grainy and watery), two orders of fries (tasty), a chicken salad sandwich (zero flavor), a cheeseburger (very thin patty), a beet burger (very thin and mushy), and a chicken grain bowl (small and void of taste), all for a grand total of $75. The issue with this was that the price is extremely high for such small portions of mediocre food. We had to order fries because they did not come with the burgers or sandwiches (this is what I mean by expensive ala cart food items). Truly, the food was not bad, but it did have zero flavor and the cost was outrageous. If you are a vegan at heart, you will probably enjoy this place, and that's ok. What do you do if a vegan, a pescetarian, and a carnivore want to do lunch? Grass Roots Kitchen to the rescue. The vegan loved the pulled "pork" (jackfruit) sandwich and fries. The pescetarian loved the oyster mushroom po boy. The carnivore loved the cheeseburger with bacon. But the hit of the meal were the drinks....the mellow yellow mango smoothie was light and tasty; the signature deep roots was extraordinary...mango, blueberry, orange, and beet was tart and tangy. We actually used to go to a place called Grass Roots in Jacksonville FL a few years ago which was a natural market and juice bar tho. We were pleasantly surprised to find this establishment had so many organic options, many of which could be made gluten free or already were gf and/or vegan. We didn't have to stress which we usually do when we go out to lunch. We were so happy with our food! We had a cheese burger with gf roll which the roll was one of the best gf bread/rolls we ever had periodT! The chocolate chip gf vegan cookies were delicious too and right texture-- I'm super picky about a lot of gf foods and everything here was sooooo good! The service was excellent and smiley too, the lovely girls who took our order and served us were so patient and understanding of our allergen needs and that we hadn't been there before. The prices weren't astronomical either like so many organic and vegan spots tend to be these days. I expected to pay a lot more bc an hour north in Poughkeepsie this meal would've cost me well over $60 and I spent less than $40 here. 10/10 would return in a Heartbeat. And the artwork is so lovely throughout, the bathroom was very clean and there was plenty of seating and space which is harder to get in restaurants around here and I'm very much an introvert and empath so being around energy in tight spaces is anxiety inducing for me.
