This is the newest and the third location for Grassa. It's been open just 10 days. We were fortunate enough to stumble upon this newly opened enterprise. We're familiar with the original Grassa, located in downtown Portland. So when I saw this, I really wanted to try it because we like the one downtown a lot. And this location is almost directly across the street from one of their other restaurants, Lardo, also on Hawthorne boulevard. We had no idea just how good a brand new restaurant could be. Boy, we were surprised! What a superb treat this experience turned out to be! Like the other Grassa locations, they specialize in pastas - all handmade, fresh daily, on the premises and with the same detail and care as the other sites. It's a large, contemporary, casual place. You walk up to a counter, place your order and pay for it. You'll be given a large number that you place on the the table of your choice. Your food will shortly be delivered by a staff member. The menu is posted on the wall above the order counter. It's a very easy menu to understand as it is very straightforward. There are about 10 different pastas to choose from for a main course and a number of salads and side dishes. Cost is very reasonable considering the super high quality of the ingredients and food prep. We ordered a Caesar Salad ($8) and a Grilled Mustard Greens ($6) to share. I ordered a Whipped Poato Agnolotti ($16) for myself. This is braised beef rib, broccoli rab pesto, Parmasan potato chips. Simple outstandin in both flavor, texture and presentation. My wife ordered the Cacio E Pepe ($10). This iswide noodle with truffle butter, salt, cracked pepper, grana. She loved it. We shared a bit of our dishes and we heartily agreed that EVERYTHING was superb! It is so rare that everything delivered to our table was so very good. The Caesar Salad was amazing because every component was superbly married to the whole of the salad. The dressing was amazing and nicely tossed. Even the croutons were really good. In my pasta dish, the braised beef was some of the best short rib I've ever had - beautiful flavor, lovely texture and it all worked so very well together. My wife thought the same about her dish. It was hard to believe that such a simple dish like hers could taste so good! Bottom line - we agreed that this was one of the best, inexpensive pasta meals we have ever had and I would even go so far as to say this was a gourmet experience. If I could give this place 0 stars I would. My husband got the pizza pocket. It was so disgusting. Packed with cold cheese but so much of cheese it was inedible. I ate the meatballs and the black truffle pappadelle pasta. It was bland and horrible. I question the quality and sanitation because since I ate that and nothing else I am sick and my stomach has been rolling and I have terrible nausea. I've been watching this space, and was excited when I saw the Grassa paper go up indicating what was going in, and even more when it came down the last few days before they opened. Looks like they've taken a double space in the first floor of this newish apartment building. The counter that you order from is on the eastern side, and they've got hung up menu items on chalkboard like placards. The space has lots of white tile, light woods, lots of high-top tables, with booths around the edges. Still relatively new when I went in, but most of the booths were full, but plenty of seating at the communal high top tables. It's hard to go wrong with freshmade pasta, and the carbonara I had was good - nicely al dente bucatini with generous amounts of pancetta and pecorino topped with an egg, at a fair price point ($11). I know lots of folks have problems with the pricing of Italian food when they eat out, but Grassa seems to balance the quality and price well in general. I was tempted to order a negroni or a campari and soda, but as it was already 8 and a work night (and coming from drinks with coworkers), I passed. I really want to like this place but again the pasta and salad were just ok. Caesar salad was overdressed and soft rather than crunchy. Croutons were scarce and also drowning in dressing. Pasta was lacking flavor and the pancetta was overcooked. Service was friendly and the place is spacious with a cool aesthetic. read more

I came into Grassa on Hawthorne on a super busy Saturday night. The line moved quickly and I was greeted by smiling staff. I didn't catch her name, but the sweet blonde employee attentively took my order and suggested I try their new pizza pockets. After grabbing my huge number and finding a seat, to my surprise, my food was brought out quickly by the same person who took my order. This girl is everywhere! She even checked in on me later to see how I was enjoying my meal. So nice of her! Great experience and I will definitely be returning to this location. The pesto pasta and the pork belly mac and cheese were by far my two favorites, along with the rosemary sour cocktail. The garlic bread was also delish. With this disclaimer in mind, this review is strictly for the food alone: Fried Brussels Sprouts with mustard aioli: 5/5, crisp, well balanced aioli with a very subtle mustard taste, so delish Garlic Bread: 5/5, it's yummy bread with cheese and garlic, nothing more needs to be said Carbonara: 5/5, perfectly cooked yolky over medium egg, creamy, al dente bucatini, delightful and wonderful with the pancetta, my fave! So disappointed in our recent trip to Grassa. Carbonara was waaay too salty and was more like eating a bacon omelette than a bowl of pasta. I've had this dish before at another location and loved it. Bummer. The restaurant was understaffed when we were there on a weekend. I really felt for the girl behind the counter who was the only one running front-of-house (taking orders, pouring drinks, bringing orders out, cleaning tables), she was doing a ton of work. Not impressed unfortunately ... went out to Portland to visit family for New Years. Had dinner there January 2nd. They lost our ticket and it took almost an hour for our food to come out. Only reason why I'm giving 2 starts is because of one of the employees there. A female employee that unfortunately didn't catch her name was very apologetic and did everything in her power to try and fix the problem. EVERYONE else bringing out food never stopped to ask us anything or try and figure out why we were just sitting there nor did they show any type of empathy since their staff had lost our order. I waited 40 minutes on a slow night. When they finally called my name the order was missing the carbonara. When I pointed this out the person behind the counter acted like I'd insulted her. I would rate this a 4.5 if I could but only because the fountain soda was flat and because they looked at me weird when I asked for chili flakes in my pasta. Just my experience but Other than that I got the newhaven clam pasta and it was amazing the clam to pasta ratio is perfect, very filling and fresh. and the meat balls are freshly made you can taste it. The speed is also very quick but not sure how it would be during a rush. Their is no house bread and butter just be aware but if ur not a bread eater that's not an issue. read more

I've given Grassa so many chances to provide service and products that match the hype. They consistently fail to deliver. Whether I order from the website or through a delivery app, the food always arrives late, cold, and in ridiculously small portions for the price. A $20-25 pasta dish simply cannot show up that bad that often. Most recently I ordered to pick up and waited an hour before the website told me my order was ready. I then sat there for another 40 minutes before someone finally came over to tell me they didn't make it and they'd give me garlic bread for the trouble. $20, 2 hours and the last time I'll ever go to this place again. read more

THE BEST pasta place I have ever tried. Forget those bougie $40 a plate Italian places with the fancy table cloths. Grassa is hands down the greatest. We're from Seattle and drive down to Portland here and there, either passing through or just for the food. We were recommended Grassa a couple years ago and every time we're in the area, we stop by. All three locations in Portland are fabulous. The best dishes? I think that's up for hot debate, but we usually get the pork belly mac and the radiatore (bolognese). This most recent time we also had the carbonara and it was perfect. And for $10-$15 a dish, you can't go wrong. We need a Grassa up in Washington. read more

On our drive back from crater lake to Seattle, we decided to stop at Grassa for some grub. They do not allow indoor dining in yet but have limited outdoor seating available. We arrived at 9 pm so we were able to easily find a table.. I got myself the cacio pepe with a fried egg and my husband got himself their lamb meatball pasta (I forget the name on the menu). Our friend's shared the chicken Parm. I had a glass of red wine which was poured from a tap while the guys had canned beer. The meals are priced reasonably and is definitely a great pitstop for those traveling through Portland or visiting. Pastas are priced int the range or 11 to 16$ . The portion size is ample. They have add ONS of egg and pork belly for $3. The servers are really friendly and sweet. read more

Mamma mia! Beautifully delicious authentic Italian - fresh pasta paired with rich flavors. We ordered dinner delivery from DoorDash to our AirBnB last night and were first amazed at how quickly the food arrived - hot and straight from the kitchen, it was just as perfect as if we were sitting in a restaurant. The Grassa Meatballs were a standout, moist and flavorful swimming in classic red sauce that begged to be sopped up with the decadent slabs of Garlic Bread. The truffle butter Cacio e Pepe is a magnificent creation of fresh thick ribbons of pasta drenched in elegant truffle-y rich goodness and grana. The Chicken Parm is perfectly breaded and fried (not at all greasy) chicken seated regally on a bed of bucatini. Last but not least, the Rosemary Sour cocktail-to-go served two and was the ideal dessert drink to round out the meal. Che bello! what a glorious meal! read more

I wanna address something first and foremost. When you place a takeout order online you are REQUIRED to pay a 20% GRATUITY. A gratuity is typically an extra amount of money the patron gives to the restaurant to express their GRATITUDE for an exceptional experience. It is noted this is required "during these unprecedented times" and "100% goes to pay the staff". STFU. The pandemic is over. During "unprecedented times" you don't expand your business and put a 20% tax on your prices to cover your labor costs. You opened 2 new locations in 2022. During unprecedented times, you should probably be a little more conservative and pay your staff a little more and not just pass that cost along to the customer under the guise of "gratuity". Raise your already high prices... If we want to place a phone order, we get a message to place it online and we have to pay 20% on top of your menu price to get the service of you putting in a brown paper bag. I've been eating at Grassa for almost a decade and this last time was just the worst. It's been downhill over the last year. The $10 ($12 after "gratuity") Cesar was laughably small this time around, I literally cut some more romaine from my fridge up to make it sufficient. I always order the burrata and the last 3 times (probably over 4 months) were all just very poorly executed; basically just over-stretched mozzarella. The saving grace is the pasta, but alas, this last time the Carbonara and Cacio y Pepe were subpar. I hope you change the way you operate your to go orders. It's pathetic.​ read more

Great pasta! :D I've been to Grassa twice now, this place and the location in DT. I remembered there was quite a wait at the DT location (pre-COVID) and was afraid it would be the same for here, but no line so that was already a positive. Both times we ordered the Frito Misto, really good! The fried citrus in there is a nice touch and the squid is fried perfectly. We got the carbonara and pomodoro this time around. The pomodoro was delicious! So good that my mom ordered it the next day when we went to Lardo and ordered it next door. The carbonara was unfortunately extremely salty. Not there's-pecorino-in-here salty level, really salty. We ate it but couldn't finish it. The flavor was good though, but it was too much salt. However, we did mention it to one of the employees and they graciously took it off the bill even when we mentioned we didn't need anything since we had technically already eaten it. I have been going to Grassa for nearly 3 years and it was one of my favorite spots at first, but they keep jacking around the prices and it's so annoying a couple months ago you could get the pesto pasta with three turkey meatballs for $19 and I went today and for a Caesar salad and a pesto pasta it was $27 and they bring out my salad and it was just not it. It was really light green and white and just not very edible and was super watery. Croutons were great but the rest of it was nothing to write home about then she brings out our pasta dishes after like 30 minutes of waiting, which I've already accepted if you're going to this place you were going to have to wait and I looked at her and I was like where the meatballs and she's like oh we don't do that anymore and I was like that would've been great to know before I spent $17 on noodles and pesto. The servers were kind and accommodating, offering suggestions and recommendations. I like the number of booths available. My only notch against the ambiance was the music- a little too loud and heavy rock for dinner time. The prices were decent for the portions you got. The pasta I had was a disappointment and I wish there were more vegetarian pasta options, but the feta watermelon salad was so good. Very fresh! Wine selection was also decent. It was nice and light which was good, but I thought it lacked some depth of flavor and didn't have enough sauce. If I went back, I would try a different dish. We ordered the squash fritters (much sweeter than I thought they'd be and not really a fritter...), pork belly Mac and cheese (just...weird. I don't even know how to explain it. How can anything with pork belly or anything Mac and cheese be gross? Somehow that happened.), and the wild mushroom Alfredo (this was our favorite but only after getting the large chunks of the fried lemon out of there).
