I've had a previous experience with Grasshopper Heating & Cooling, as they did install a hot water heater for us in the past at our old home. We were very satisfied with both the quality of the product and their workmanship, which is why we reached out to them again. This time, however, the experience fell short. We scheduled an appointment for a representative to come out and provide an estimate for a furnace (and potentially a full HVAC system, including central air and a hot water heater). The technician came to our home and gave us only a verbal quote--nothing in writing. As most homeowners know, it would be unwise to move forward without a written estimate, especially when comparing multiple companies. We specifically needed a written estimate as part of a real estate transaction that had already encountered complications. After the appointment, I followed up and spoke with our service contact, Joe B., who assured me he would email the estimate. Unfortunately, we never received anything, and because of the lack of follow-through and documentation, they unfortunately missed the mark this time. As a result, we've decided to move forward with another plumbing and heating company for this project. It's disappointing, especially given our positive experience in the past, but communication and proper documentation are essential, and this time it just didn't happen. read more

A heads up about Deceptive Sales Tactics and Lack of Transparency I had one of the most frustrating and deceptive experiences with this company, centered on a complete lack of transparency regarding the equipment being installed. First, they grotesquely misspelled my name. Yes it may be a small issue but telling detail that reflects a lack of care and professionalism. I invested hours of my day with the salesperson, agreed on a price, and got financing approved, expecting a smooth process. First red flag is that quote/sale agreement I signed was not sent to me in writing. When I requested the quote to be sent for my records, the estimate deliberately excluded the equipment model numbers for both the furnace and AC unit. When I texted the salesperson asking for clarification, he sent me information for a 16 SEER model, which matched what I had been quoted / agreed to, yet this was never included in the official paperwork. They pushed to install two days later. Despite my repeated requests via calls, texts, and emails, the company did not provide the actual model numbers and proceeded with installation. This delay immediately raised more concerns. I got a call from installers stating they were on their way then called the company twice and informed Rhea that I would not allow installation unless model was on my estimate/contract as agreed with sales person. Sure enough when the installers arrived, I asked them directly what SEER rating they were installing. They confirmed it was a 13 SEER, not 16 as agreed upon and per sales person confirmation via text. I asked the sales guy to send me the estimate Insigned, which was only shared at that point, listed the Rheem RA13NY24, confirming a 13 SEER unit, not the higher-efficiency system I was led to expect. By withholding those crucial model details from the original quote, this company kept their options open to install cheaper, lower-efficiency equipment while assuming I wouldn't notice. I felt misled, rushed, and deceived after having already been pressured to sign the estimate and apply for financing. I'm sharing this to warn other consumers: do not sign or finance anything until you have the exact model numbers and guaranteed SEER ratings documented in writing. They will push you to install asap but if you don't check the model you might get much less than what you agreed to. Transparency and honesty are fundamental in any major home investment, and unfortunately, I found neither with this company. read more

I had a great high grade furnace that was turned up perfect. strong blue flames, powerful blower, highly maintained. Unknowingly someone had reprogrammed the thermostat to turn off at certain times. The tech said I had a cracked heat exchanger, bad blower motor, oversized furnace. I was in the hospital, and wasn't present when he was there. I asked if he read the codes on my Lenox furnace and he did not. anyone could read the consumer ready codes. When I got back to look at heat exchanger there were" no cracks ". I had always maintained this furnace myself. (plus I do maintenance of 7 furnaces at my day job!). The new furnace failed again that night. Everything the other negative reviewers said was exactly what happened. It's like they have a playbook they follow just to jerk customers around. All we called for was to have a rep come over and clean our furnace. The rep showed up (hours later than promised) with a camera and not much else that I could see. Definitely didn't see a vacuum. He took a few pics and went out to his truck twice to speak with his supervisor. Why??? You need advice on how to vacuum out a furnace??? End result: they suggested we get a $10G new furnace as well as a few grand more for a water heater. What?!?!?!? After he left we called Family Danz. Best decision ever. They know their stuff! Came out right away and cleaned and serviced our furnace for under $1000. read more

We called Grasshopper Heating & Cooling , and we're happy they were able to come the same day to address our plumbing issue. From the moment the plumber came into our home we knew we made a mistake. He first looked at our issue , and took photos. Then he asked to see our bathrooms and again took photos. He explained there procedure is to send all photos to a manager and then they could give us a quote. He went to his truck, and came back inside in around 20 minutes. We were told the estimate would be $1,280 plus tax. We looked at each other in amazement! Way more than we expected for a simple repair. We left it we would get back to them and paid our $basic take a look fee. After discussing with others our brother in law took a look at the issue. Him and my husband fixed the problem for $35.00. Lesson learned ask family and friends first before calling this company and getting ripped off! . read more

They were patient and communicated well navigating the normal hiccups involved with the numerous aspects of our large job (new boiler, heat pump hot water heater, and various other smaller items). We met at least four teams between the original energy audit and the various jobs, and every member of every crew worked seamlessly with each other with excellent rapport, which speaks volumes about the folks in charge. Had an issue with my furnace time to time only have air but no heat, but if we shut off and turned back on, it works. Called Grasshopper and service guy was very nice. Took a lot of pictures and told us the flame sensor might be the problem. My husband asked them to quote with replace ignitor as well just in case. Quote was $1500+ for just 2 parts. Told them just replace flame sensor, quote was $700+. Found out they included a 60 days warranty on part only for $90. Told them no on warranty. So costed me $500 for just flame sensor replacement. 2 weeks later, my furnace is having the same problem again. Called the company and told they will check their schedule and call me back. 2 days already, still no call. read more

As we just bought the house here in NY and I needed professional to come and inspect/look at my plumbing and other areas of concern. On 11-19 Saif Shah tech was sent to our house. He seemed nice and friendly. He took many pictures of all parts of our house even inside of our fridge and stated that he will send us a list of all needed work to be done and estimate for those - we received NOTHING!!! He often stated that he doesn't really know plumbing and some other things that he needed to inspect and called somebody on the phone to get consulted while in my house and we still don't have anything from him. I started to wonder if this person was even legitimate or maybe just somebody who came to checkout out our home and to see what is there to steal... I called the office three times and every time I was promised that we will get what we were told that we will get, but NOTHING. So what was the point of the visit/inspection? I needed a dishwasher installed. They quoted me $2000. When i balked at the price they lowered it to $900 which still seemed high. Some nice guys came and redid the drain under the sink. They never hooked up the water because they told me I needed a new water main to shut off water. It was fine. They knew nothing about the electric and blew the circuit breaker figuring it out. They left without hooking up anything and demanding/charging me $900 for simple drain work. I had to hire someone else to do the work and also do over what they did wrong. I wouldn't even give this company a 1 star. Today a technician came to our house about a shutoff valve needing to be replaced on our washer. After looking it over he then had to go to his van to call someone about pricing. came back in with a quote of $2082 yes that is correct. When asked for a cost analysis only thing he said was hose was $150 and new shutoff was $800. Could not or would not show a cost breakdown of anything especially the other $1,100. May call BBB. especially when another plumber came to show me the parts brand new were a little over $75. Wasted $89 on Grasshopper service call. I would not recommend this company for service. They promote good service and pricing but after they treat you nicely with words, they gouge you with their actual pricing. When I confronted them about their exorbitant pricing, they tell me that I signed the invoice so I agreed to it. So, make sure you don't sign and boot them out of your house when they tell you their prices. Basically, for 1 hours labor with no parts, they charged me $625. I got an estimate from them a little over a year ago for a replacement system. I slacked and let some time go by. I tried getting other estimates from more "reputable" places, those more established in this area. One never returned my call. The other came and we talked about three different replacement systems and I was to get the estimates the next day. Never heard from them. Some time went by and I received a text from Grasshopper about a promotion they were having. I responded and a day later I have a brand new system! They were amazingly professional and knowledgeable and they took the time to explain everything and to show me all about this new unit. Not that I would remember any of it but they're also a call away should I have any questions. I'm so toasty warm right now! I reactivated my yelp account just to leave this review. I can only speak to the plumbing team here not the Heating and Cooling side. This company is great at setting up an initial appointment and taking your money. Their communication after that is abysmal with no accountability. They will show up claim they have done the work, but when asked for further information, they will tell you they will call you back and then never reach out. You will have to follow up with them for over a month via email and phone calls and you still won't have any real answers. Your best bet is to hire someone else, that's what I did and they were able in half the time for half the money tell me what the problem is and at no point did this other company try to sell me a $20000 fix that I don't need. I had a problem with my furnace not heating properly during the spring. Grasshopper heating and cooling came to check it out. They spent a week here off and on with various technicians. They then decided it couldn't be fixed and told me I needed a new furnace and Hot water tank which they said was not going to last much longer. So they said they give me a great deal for a new furnace and hot water tank, which would cost $ 13,000. Well I decided to get a second opinion and call Yancey's heating and cooling and after 2 hours her had my furnace running great and it's still running great. I'm done with Grasshopper. read more

I purchased a furnace from Grasshopper in October 2024 for $9200. The day my old furnace broke down the Grasshopper technician, showed up after 7pm to inspect it & of course to sell a new unit. On 12-9-25 the furnace broke down. I only got a technician because I made a complete fool of myself (which I apologized for). He started the unit, charged me $48.60 (no receipt) and left. Today, 12-16-25, the furnace broke down again. I called Grasshopper at 5:30 and was told that no one can come out "because they all went home". I was told that no one would be available until possibly the following day, if they could "squeeze me in". They could not or would not give me a time window for the repair until I asked to be reimbursed for using another company. Then suddenly they could fit me in between 8am - 10am. I've used this company in the past because I thought they were reputable, in spite of the fact that they are more expensive than others. I will not use them again and I cannot recommend them. If I could give them less than 1 star, I would. They are not a company you should do business with. read more

Don't call them if you having problems with your heating unit. Had a technician show up to troubleshoot my Viessman unit that had a Eb code, I had identified when I called that it was a Viessman boiler and needed someone familiar with the unit to troubleshoot and repair it. Technician showed up late for the schedule appointment and I know I had problems when he didn't know how to open the unit up. Did not do any troubleshooting on the unit and suggested we needed a new unit. When I said no this unit is only 12 years old, started to try to tell me we needed a system flush in order to do it would need an extra valve connection to my unit. He call his supervisor for a quote of $2700 to install the valve and perform the flush. I said no to that do and showed the technician that my system could be flushed without the "special valve". He agree and quote me another $780 to perform the flush. This unit had been cleaned every two years since we owned by different companies and know one every mention this flush before. Again the technician never even do any troubleshooting on the unit. I waited the $130 service call for nothing. Still have the issue of the boiler shutting off every night. read more

I was so impressed with her company as a woman and then I did a bit more research and her AI company she just started records the service call with you then analyzes your personality type using the Myers-Briggs then analyzes the interaction that the technician has with you who then goes in their car to look over the data collected then comes back in and uses that data to manipulate you and give customer specific pricing based on it. It's not a real interaction at all and the consumer has no idea what's going on. Being marketed to is fine if I know what I'm consenting to! Also I understand that AI is taking over but I would never ever consent to being recorded on a home service call and I think 99% of customers would not either, I'm in my own home and you are coming into an intimate environment and recording me? And when i called their front desk to complain the front desk worker said "when did you become aware we were recording you?" Before changing the script saying it's written somewhere they do that as if I should have been privy...which is weird because why was I completely unaware of this and mortified....and how many customers do you think know this...? She's using this HVAC business to test out her AI in the capital district then sell it to other business owners but luckily her tech is illegal in many states as she uses it now...customer comfort is the very last priority here. That's why she is on podcasts explaining her plan. I am so disappointed because I really wanted to support a good business who actually does the right thing but I highly doubt they will be changing their policy any time soon. I hope everyone sees this and is very wary of letting this company come into the sacred space of their home. The CEO (in the linked interview) also argued that as a customer when you are on phone calls with companies you are often recorded but the thing js you are ALWAYS warned that you are recorded before you engage with a any technician on the phone. So freaking unethical and this could be easily fixed by having the technician say to you at your door "we are recording... is that okay before I come in?" But they don't want to tip you off they are sneakily recording you because they need you as chatty as possible for their data collection on you. As I said in certain states this is outright illegal but New York happens to be a one party consent state. I signed up for the maintenance program for my heating and cooling system. I called to schedule the maintenance on my furnace and it took over a month and a half for the appointment and they called me today to tell me the tech called out and now trying to push out my appointment back another month. I have asked for a refund of my maintenance plan and I would not recommend this company. Unless you enjoy waiting months for service then this company is for you! read more

AVOID Grasshopper! The sort of experience that causes you to lose faith in the honesty of contractors. My 3yr old hot water heater stopped working last month. Grasshopper diagnosed a faulty gas control valve and said control valve not covered under warranty. They proceeded to quote me $2,200 to replace control valve! I would purchase a new water heater for that price. I contacted a competitor who in turn confirmed my parts were covered under warranty and performed the job for less than $650. I contacted Grasshopper to express frustration and they did not have a good answer for quoting so high. They said they would refund my $120 diagnosis fee. Two more calls to them and still no refund. At this point, just leaving this review to warn others. They have lost a customer and I'm warning everyone to be cautious. read more

The technician who came to our home was very nice and professional. He couldn't give us any answers, though, and had to call his boss to speak with us. It was quite a sales pitch. He offered several solutions for repairs or replacement. For example, option A, the lowest price offer would be around $110 a month, option B was higher, etc., but the bottom line was that we should replace it. He quoted a monthly payment for replacement, but it took a lot of back and forth before he eventually told us what the total cost was. They wanted $13,000 to replace the furnace in a 2,000 sq. ft. home. We had a couple more companies give us estimates, and they were all about half of that. My advice is to shop around. read more

Had them in when our AC wasn't working during a heatwave. First they said it was our capacitor, changed it, that was going to be $400. Then he said the compressor was not kicking on, so compressor is shot. To fix the 13 year old AC will be $5,000. To buy a new one is $10,000 but zero % financing. Told them I can buy a lot of window AC's for that and sent them on their. They took out the $400. Capacitor and I paid the diagnostic fee. My brother who is a contractor and lives too far away to assist me, tells me that it can take more the 1 -2 mins for the compressor to pop on (they only tried for 1-2 mins before saying compressor bad). Also never had meter to ck if power was good leading to compressor (a possible 2nd reason for compressor not turning on). Brother told me to buy a capacitor and put in ($20 - quite an up charge for grasshopper to charge $400). We did and my husband held the reset for 4 minutes and the compressor came on. Our AC is fixed for $20 and grasshopper was trying to get $5,000 - $10,000. They even told me my 13 year old furnace needs replacing too. You will notice they send techs out who call into the office to to consult with them, then at the end the tech comes in with a person from the office either on speaker phone or computer. They then tell you how bad your prognosis is and how much its going to cost. This company is more interested in replacing equipment instead of fixing it. They also are unchanging a considerable amount of money. Get a small town down to earth company/person to take care of your stuff. I will never have them in my home again. read more

Every interaction with these people felt like I was talking to a used car salesman....they actually brought a pound of coffee to the visit like they were selling Rainbow vacuums. Marketing techniques aside, they claimed I needed an entirely new unit at an estimated cost of $8-$9000, and then never sent a written estimate. I contacted another company, who cleaned the unit and replaced a defective blower. Total cost: $900. To follow up on their Google response: Although my wife made it very clear we were looking for just a repair, I was called within seconds of the tech leaving our house by Grasshopper's offices to set up an appointment to "get measurements for a replacement unit." So, no, we didn't ask for a replacement at that time, but Grasshopper was more than happy to push for that (far more expensive) option. Wonder how often that happens with your other customers? And again...we never received an invoice at any time, for any level of repair or replacement, so we couldn't examine our options. With that said...I'd be happy to pay the outstanding invoice...if you actually sent one of those either. (For reference, the company we had the repair completed through was paid the next day.) Thanks for passive-aggressively mentioning that in your response though. Very professional. So, I guess since your organization has no clue how invoices work, I need to show up and pay with cash? Regardless, I want to get you guys paid so I can forget you exist, except when I tell this story to anyone looking for heating services recommendations in the future. read more

Provided with a 9AM - 1PM window on a non-emergency call and technician arrived at 2:45 PM after being provided with the wrong address by CB dispatch. Simple bathroom faucet installation resulted in loose spigot and incorrect mounting of left faucet. A call made the next day found no technician available for four days to complete the work correctly. Cost: $952.46 I do not recommend this service by any means. read more

Not a big fan of them. We needed a new furnace during the covid pandemic. My wife and I were impressed with how they dealt with the health situations at the time, but it was all downhill from there. We purchased the furnace and when they installed it they said to set our thermostat and nothing happened. Apparently the new trainee didn't connect the electric up right so I began to wonder. We live in a condo, and the furnace is in a small room outside on the porch. I would smell gas and wondered if this was bad or just venting because it was outside. Obviously, I'm not a HVAC tech. When we had them come to check on our AC, I asked the tech about this and he said it was not right and the connections were never tightened so the gas was slightly leaking out. This tech was okay but the next one checked our AC and recommended a new starter for our unit which was about 2 years old at a cost of $500. I asked another service guy and he said it was totally not needed. Finally, every time they came for a tuneup they wanted to check and sell us a water and air purifying system for quite a price. Never asked for this and only wanted them for HVAC. I would not recommend as I don't think they are competent or honest. Always trying to sell something instead of just doing their job. read more

They make sure to get you locked in, fully committed and the customer service becomes obsolete. Its obvious you're just a number! I have NEVER had such an honest, professional, fair or 5-star experience with any other home improvement contractor in my 43 years of life. Grasshopper leaves ZERO stones unturned as far as workmanship, excellence, professionalism, and customer service. On top of the service professionals being just AMAZING and kind and skilled - the owner, Amanda, is also great. She is on TOP of her trade, her business, her teams of pros and her valued customers. She responds and conducts business (this was all during the busiest and coldest time of the entire year so far in 2021) as if you are the most important appointment of the day. She's just a pleasure to work with. And her technicians are no different. My 9 month old Frenchie puppy (Wyatt) insisted on cramming himself IN a closet with two technicians and they were just so sweet and patient, no matter how many times I had to come pull him out of there. They treated him like he was a little helper, lol. Grasshopper completely replaced a very bad/illegal exhaust and intake for a brand new heating/air unit done during renovations prior to the purchase of my new home. It was not easy. Not even a little. My home was built in 1850 and NOTHING is standard or where it should be - much less correct or easy. Their work was impeccable and it has made such a difference in the operation of my HVAC. I literally had a five gallon bucket collecting water leaking from HVAC pipes prior to their work. If you're worried about the cost - don't be. They will be MORE than fair. You can get estimates and talk to several companies, but it will be an easy choice and all factors considered - they are the obvious choice. If I could give less than one star I would. The technician that came to my house for a non-working furnace took the front cover off, looked inside with a flashlight and said that I needed a heat exchanger. How can you see the heat exchanger without taking the furnace apart? He never tested anything. He never brought test equipment out nothing and then he told me he could fix my furnace for 4000 or I should consider getting a new furnace just in case. I don't often write reviews. Only when I come across something that I feel needs saying . Well, here it is. Please understand, If I'm writing a negative review, The experience had to be pretty bad. So here are the particulars. Grasshoppers guy arrived at my home to replace a thermostat. I had purchased a new thermostat at the Heating & cooling contractor supply on Railroad Avenue. Be aware this firm only does HVAC and are a major supplier to contractors in the area. So, the guy comes in and takes the old thermostat of the wall. I inform him that I have already purchased a new thermostat and hand it to him. For the next 15 min. he tries several times to unscrew the back, almost breaking it at one point judging from the sound of cracking plastic. He then declares it defective and informs me I'll need another one. I tell him I just bought it from the contractor supply. He says " I'll call them ". He calls them and starts talking about the thermostat. I can here thru the phone as he was standing right next to me the contractor supply hanging up on him mid speech. To my shock, he actually pretended as though he was still talking to them and then looks at me shaking his head yes as though they were agreeing with him. Needless to say the job could not be accomplished with my thermostat. But fortunately he had one on the truck. It being the middle of winter I reluctantly agreed to let him continue. While he was installing the thermostat he provided, he seemed to be struggling a bit telling me at one point that he wasn't familiar with this brand. It was one of the most popular brands on the market. This was before the pandemic by the way, so this wasn't do to a labor shortage. He finished and the bill was 5 times what I had expected it to be as I have had thermostats replaced before. Usually costing between $75 & $150. Depending on whether you supply your own thermostat. This bill was over $500. for an hour and fifteen minutes, forty five of which were spent trying to break the thermostat I purchased. So I paid him. their was no arguing about the bill. Usually they leave and mail the bill later. After all, you live there, where are you going. Well, this guy demanded payment on the spot. He pulled out an electronic card reader and told me he needed my credit card. I gave it to him, what else could I do and after verifying that I had paid in full, promptly left. I felt ripped off. So I drove to the HVAC store to return the thermostat and complain. After telling the HVAC guy that the grasshopper tech couldn't install this he refunded my money. I pressed him about the quality of the thermostat he had sold me. He simply answered " I sell these by the thousands to contractors with no complaint ". He seemed very sincere, so I asked him what he thought about this Grasshopper outfit. He didn't respond verbally, he just put his head down and shook it from side to side. I thought maybe they just had a bad technician on their crew. So I called Grasshopper . The woman on the phone was very nice and seemed like she genuinely wanted to help. I informed her that I had just returned from the HVAC store and the thermostat they had just sold me for $150. retailed at the store for $30. bucks. The exact same thermostat down to the serial number. I could her someone in the back round talking to her as she was pausing as she spoke. She informed me their thermostat came the a ten year warranty because it was " registered" by them. The $30. one in the store came with a five year warranty. At this point I figured these guys were gonna have an answer for everything. So I ended up paying $150 dollars for a $30 dollar thermostat. But I did get a ten year warranty. Like who's gonna remember that in ten years? I also paid $350 dollars for a service call that should have cost around ninety dollars. I know because after this my other thermostat in the upstairs apartment needed replacing and since I bought my own once again, that's what the next contractor charged me.
