8 tastings for $5! What a deal! We found this quaint place after hiking Old Rag and learned about who the true "Gray Ghost" was. Random and a lucky find. Be sure to check it out if you're in the area. They ran out of their Cabernet Franc which was unexpected but left with their 2013 Ranger Reserve (blend of cab sauv, malbec, petit verdot, merlot, & cab franc), 2013 Reserve Chardonnay (100% malolactic fermentation) and Adieu (sweet but not syrupy sweet). Next time we will be back for that bottle of Cab Franc! read more

The white wine offerings were acceptable, Good for summer, but the reds were horrible! We even purchased the $40 bottle of '08 Cab Sov, and that too was horrible. The Merlot had a scent of burnt rubber. Want a good bottle of Merlot... Coppola! Virginia has some wonderful wines, The Ghost was a dissapointment. read more

We went for Mothers Day and got a free tasting and tour of the production facility with the owner. The wine is very good here. They are one of the oldest wineries in VA and all their wines are made with just grapes from their property, which is rare. It was crowded, but the owner opened up a special room for us for the tasting so he could accommodate everyone. Their wines are very well awarded and reasonably priced. I bought the table wine- at $16-$18 that's all I could afford at this stage in life, but they had plenty of bottles for around $25. I like the Mom and Pop feeling of this winery. They have a volunteer harvest day in the fall that I may come back for! read more

Grey Ghost vineyards... when we pulled up I had to laugh as this was the nickname for a friends car in high school. Man was that Ford LTD a piece of junk but oh the fun memories! OK OK back to the Vineyard! We enjoyed the wines very much and especially the Adieu and the Seyval Blanc both very good. Seems to be they make very good sweet wines if that is your palate but I do enjoy a good red and the Ranger Reserve didn't leave me wanting something else! We had been by many times, but they always seemed to be closed when we drove by, so we stopped in today (July 4th). They were moderately busy, but still had time to welcome us and provide us with a complimentary tasting, as they were offering them for free since it is July 4th. We really enjoyed their Victorian Red, as they also chill it and serve it "rosé" style. It was GREAT like this. Something GREAT about this winery was that they also provide wine chillers for cool wines. Many wineries in the area don't give you this, thus allowing your cool wine to get really warm as you drink it, especially while outdoors on beautiful, sunny days. (Hint to other wineries - you could learn from this!) Their landscaping was outstanding... plenty of pretty trees and flowers about their gazebo and shaded patios areas. read more

The place is pretty hidden (but not so much you have to scavenge to find it...) it is very welcoming as you enter. There are so many quirky items for sale and on display. The nice thing is they have all their old glasses on display to see, too. The staff is friendly and good at multi tasking the tastings without losing place or looking like they are doing actual work. Beautiful winery that has been around for a long time. We decided to make a stop to do a wine tasting and we were not disappointed. We enjoyed our tasting with Cheryl, the owner of gray ghost. She was so polite and explained each wine and how to pair each wine with dinner options. We ended up staying for a glass and enjoyed hanging out on their grounds. I feel rotten giving this winery only three stars. I've heard so much about Gray Ghost, and their award-winning wines, for years. The people there were incredibly friendly and down to Earth. But.....I have to be frank on Yelp. The wines didn't blow me away, and the prices (for an established winery like this one) were high. The recent edition of Virginia Wine Lover magazine warns that some Virginia wineries are "pricing their wines higher than they should, just because they can" (i.e. Northern Virginia and the DC area are recession proof). Lovingston, down in Nelson County, has some of the best American wines I've had, yet their most expensive bottle is $15. Gray Ghost and other northern VA wineries could learn a thing or two from Lovingston. This all said, Gray Ghost's merlot is like liquid cherry pie---really delicious. Their chardonnay is good as well--lightly oaked but not over the top. But those prices....ouch. And they are too close to Route 211. You can hear the highway noise--and the balcony has a nice vineyard view, but the highway is obtrusive. A "once is enough" winery experience for me. I'll stick with Gadino Cellars, Unicorn (and now Narmada) when I'm in this part of VA. read more

I've been back a couple of times to Gray Ghost and they are still great. Love their wines, location, and staff. Tasting prices are so low ($5 I'm pretty sure) and you get to taste at least 5 or 6 wines. The prices for their wines are pretty amazing too. Still one of my favorites! read more

I went Thanksgiving weekend and they were so nice to offer free tasting so I purchased a bottle of their award winning sweet Adieu wine. I do enjoy some good red wine but none of theirs blew me away. The grounds are on the smaller side but still nice. read more

Gray Ghost has a good number of wines that I loved, and when we walked in there was little to the imagination and a very quick less than 10 minute tasting. We didn't expect a sit down extravaganza, but its not worth driving far too if its the only place you intend to go. Plan to visit other wineries to make it worth your while, some have a nice menu of food and tours, as well as scenic places to sit. read more

I visited this winery during a winery tour and this was stop three. Overall, the property is nice, but it is situated very close to the highway (which seemed a little strange to me). Set on drinking some wine, we headed inside for our tasting. We tasted in the barrel room and our pourer was hysterical. Her family owns the winery and she was highly entertaining and informative. Our group had an excellent experience at Gray Ghost. Any time you can do a wine tasting with the actual wine maker explaining his wines to you, you know you're not going to be disappointed. The tasting room is spacious enough for a few groups to be enjoying at the same time, but still intimate enough to get a great feel for the winery. Like many wineries in the area they are relatively small and a family oriented business. They have a great patio upstairs with a view of the vineyards. They are also close in proximity to Sharp Rock Vineyards, Marterella Winery, and DuCard Vineyards. We had a wonderful afternoon at Gray Ghost Vineyards and we certainly will be back! read more

Highlights: $3 wine tasting for 10 different wines, generous pours, good prices, good wine, friendly & knowledgeable staff! Cons: The wine is good not fantastic. Ok, to make this real simple for everyone. If you are looking for an amazing wine with power and finesse this is not it. If you are looking for a pretty good wine at a great price then this is the place for you. What I loved mostly about this winery is their honesty, knowledge, and bang for your buck. First of all, $3 to taste 10 wines is a fantastic deal! The pours were more then generous unlike other winery's who may charge you upwards of $10+ for less. They offer 10% discount if you buy a case and they will waive the tasting fee. There was not one wine I turned my nose up to but of course I did have my favorite. The Victorian Red is very nice because it's a mix of white and red. Enjoyable to just drink on nice warm sunny day and enjoy the fruitiness on your palette. I also love the Adieu which is a dessert wine hints of apricot, peach, and honey. Evidently this was a good year for this wine so get some now while you still can. read more

My boyfriend and I stopped here on the way back to NoVa from hiking Old Rag for the day. We did a tasting (only $5 which was an awesome deal!) and then each for a glass and sat outside. The front outside area was PERFECT for a nice day-which it was today! We got a table and enjoyed our wine in the sunshine amidst all of the beautiful vines! I absolutely love how the vines surround you RIGHT THERE when you are sitting outside. Wine itself was fantastic-the Riesling was my favorite and I don't normally do Rieslings but theirs isn't overly sweet! Will definitely go here again! read more

We stopped by this past Saturday to stock up on one of our favorite Chardonnays. We ordered two tastings and then purchased 6 or 7 bottles of wine. While the lady who was helping us was extremely pleasant, it was slightly disappointing that they didn't offer to comp our tastings considering the many bottles we purchased. Their Reserve Chardonnay and Gewürztraminer are delicious. Just wish they would show more appreciation for returning customers! read more

This is what a true Virginia winery is all about. They are established yet still small with a great local following and dedicated customer base. That is proven by their limited offerings that sell out quickly. There is a nice historical touch with this winery that all of the staff make a point to talk about. The wines are very tasty and well-priced, not to mention the tasting are free! I definitely recommend this place for both seasoned and amateur wine drinkers. read more

We stopped by this location on our vineyard tour, and it was an unpleasant experience. While the tasting was affordable, the quality of the wines left a lot to be desired. The wines have very little flavor and appear to be focused on the alcohol. The people serving the wine were more interested in filling our glasses as quickly as possible, rather than on our experience. The decor was also tacky and discombobulated. The cheap saltine crackers, rather than elegant wine crackers, reinforced the perception that you get what you pay for at this vineyard. I recommend skipping Gray Ghost vineyard and going to Unicorn or Narmada which are nearby. read more

We visited 3 wineries today and this by FAR was my favorite. One of the oldest wineries in Virginia, they grow the grapes they make the wine with (if I remember correctly). We were served our tasting by one of the owners and she was delightful and informative. This made for a very personal and intimate experience - as if they had let u into their kitchen for a glass of wine with friends. I took home the petit Verdot - just delicious. My friends brought home 2 bottles of the Ranger Reserve - also delicious. The grounds are beautiful and there's plenty of outside seating once u pick your favorite wine to enjoy al fresco. read more

Susie, the delightful woman who poured our wines were awesome!! She shared stories of how the winery was named and some other history tidbits. I enjoyed many of their wines and found them to be very reasonably priced. Since it was "National Wine Tourism Day" or something like that, our wine tastings were free. Truthfully, I didn't even know there was such a thing, but I am more than happy to participate. The area around the winery is gorgeous. We also took the food we brought with us and a few bottles of wine upstairs to relax in the delightful atmosphere. read more

We visited the winery on the day before Thanksgiving. We had purchased a mixed case very shortly after the winery started production over 20 years ago and liked the Cab Frank which is a grape that really works well in VA. We had this wine this evening and I really want to say that now it is a world class wine for this varietal. Classy, elegant, nice tannins, balanced fruit: a classic medium red. Bravo! read more

We are making a day of wineries and this was our first stop. This winery is right off the 'main' road so I was wondering how I would feel about it, but once we hit the gorgeous double doors I knew I'd love it. The wines are delicious, service is lovely and the tasting room itself was beautiful. Hardwood ceilings, rustic touches, and civil war memorabilia hung on the walls. The Kellert's are a great family...and make outstanding wines...every time I go there I end up remarking on how I like (is love too strong?) each and every wine...truly great wines and you can see the love and care that go in their creation... Take a stroll through their vineyards and you will see how Cheryl tends to the vines to ensure their robustness...Al is master at blending the wines to perfection and Cheryl makes sure the grapes get proper care... Amy, their daughter is a sparkling hostess and coordinator extraordinaire... I noticed Sheila on another review - we have had her wonderful service serveral times while visiting this extraordinary winery... Gray Ghost Winery is one of my favorites within an hour drive of Northern Virginia (to be fair, I've only visited a handful). It's in the perfect location between Shenandoah National Park and Washington, DC, so we always stop by on our ride home from camping trips. This year, when we stopped by, we were lucky enough to have our wine tasting with the owner of the Vineyard! She was so sweet and informative, and of course we loved the wines. BF loves sweet wines and I love nearly ANY kind of wine, so I let him pick out what he would drink. He picked out 2 bottles and we inquired as to where we could buy the amazing, award-winning Adieu a bit closer to home once we were out of the bottle we already had at home (there are several wine shops in Alexandria that stock it). The wine tasting cost $2/person, and I thought I remember it being free the prior year. If you have a chance, check out the beautiful upstairs, too. I'm not sure if they are offered, but Gray Ghost would make for a very pretty summer wedding! read more

The best VA winery I have been to. The wine is incredible, and the owners and staff as nice and friendly as possible. For history buffs they have an exceptional collection of Col John Mosby items (his nickname during the civil war was the Grey Ghost). The grounds are absolutely beautiful. I purchased a bottle of Gray Ghost Cabernet Franc over the winter to give to my parents as part of a 'taste of Virginia' basket with some peanuts and chocolates from ACKC. I had a taste of the wine after we opened it during the holidays and remembered enjoying it, so when we were headed out to the Shenandoahs , I figured we'd stop in to say hello and taste some wine. We had the place to ourselves on a beautifully sunny saturday morning and fully enjoyed the grounds. While the tasting room is a bit dark, there is a lovely lounge upstairs, and the gardens and gazebo are beautiful. We could only peer through the glass doors at the tanks, though, since tours are by appointment nowadays. Our server was well informed and even tolerated my overly pretentious questions about the brix of the dessert wine. I enjoyed the White Victorian and their Cabernet pretty well. The Red Victorian was a bit to 'rose bubblegum' for me, but others in the group found it perfect. It's also nice to find a winery that has FREE TASTINGS. Enjoy! read more
