Yesterday we took our work truck to the local Costa Oil for a routine oil change. This is a vehicle we've had serviced many times before, including oil changes, with no prior issues. During the service, the technician was unable to remove the dipstick and aggressively pulled it out, damaging the dipstick tube in the process. He then handed it to us as if it didn't belong there and spent roughly 10-15 minutes pulling, twisting, and yanking on the tube with pliers. When he realized it wouldn't come out, he forced it back in, told us we were "good to go," and handed us the owner's card. After leaving, we immediately contacted our mechanic, who advised that the dipstick tube should never be yanked or hammered--especially once damaged--because it compromises the seal and can cause further internal engine damage. While it isn't leaking yet, he strongly recommended parking the truck until the part is replaced to avoid a much bigger failure. Unfortunately, this part must be ordered directly from Ford or a distributor, with the earliest availability being about four days out. As many of you know, we're a local small business just trying to survive the slow season. Parking our work truck, covering parts and labor, expedited shipping, and losing four days of work is something we simply can't afford. We contacted the shop owner, and after reviewing the footage and speaking with the manager, he acknowledged via text that the technician aggressively pulled the dipstick, causing the damage. However, he is refusing responsibility and citing vehicle mileage as the reason, despite the damage occurring in his shop by his employee. We've asked multiple times for their insurance information so we can file a claim and have not received it. At this point, our only remaining option appears to be small claims court. We're posting this to make others aware and to ask for advice on how to best handle this situation. We understand mistakes happen, but taking responsibility when they do matters--especially when a small business is directly impacted.

BG Automotive? More like "BS" Automotive. The one star is for an oil change (since 0 stars is not…read morean option). BG Auto IS SHADY, smooth talking for sure, but A RIP OFF. STAY AWAY. This is a lengthy description, but it's not half the story. To all the glowing 5 star reviewers - check your invoices. The problem started with their "courtesy inspection" accompanying the oil change, where half of their recommendations (deemed red flag "Requires Immediate Attention") ultimately turned out to be mostly unnecessary and absurdly expensive. That became apparent only after paying. My bad, of course, I obviously should have asked to see a detailed estimate prior to the work. The initial estimate did not provide parts or labor detail & appeared to indicate the work was part of a "complete tune up." Upon dropping off the truck, "Service Advisor"Jesse stated that Champion copper spark plugs had been factory installed on 2013 RAM 2500s, so that was best & what BG would install. Classic BAIT & SWITCH: BG charged $508.48 for a set of 16 plugs! When I challenged the bill, asking if "kryptonite plugs" were installed instead, Jesse indicated, no, the copper plugs were used... then he checked his computer & stated, actually no, in fact the [far] more expensive NKG iridium plugs were installed. "They're much better because they last up to 100,000 miles," he emphasized. I replied, "Great. BG just changed out NGK iridium plugs that had been in the engine already, with only 60,000 miles on them." The WORK WAS COMPLETELY UNNECESSARY. Also on the bill was a "TOTAL FEES" charge of $175.77 (yes, that specific), but with ZERO DETAIL of what those fees were for or how they were calculated. Jesse couldn't provide that detail either, "It could be shop supplies, or hazardous disposal - you know, those state regulations - it could be almost anything." Note there were no hazardous materials involved with this work, such as a tire or battery disposal fee. (Google search indicates: In Colorado, shop fees are usually calculated as a percentage of the labor cost (e.g., 5-10%) and are often capped at a maximum amount (e.g., $25 to $50). Also, Colorado statute requires the repair invoice to have some kind of description of these fees, and further, "a description of each part by name and identifying number." Nowhere on the invoice was the type of plugs installed specified, either. You get NADA DETAIL from BS Automotive. Finally, while repair shops typically mark up parts 70-100% of wholesale price, BG is marking up parts in the ballpark of 100% of retail price. (If you can pry out of them the parts brand they say they'll use, you can easily verify this with a Google search at their counter.) They should be ashamed and embarrassed for what they're charging the hardworking folks of Longmont. When pressed to justify the charges, Jesse insisted they were competitive, "within 5% of other local repair shops." More BS. Comparing apples to apples (parts & labor only), the local dealership quoted over $200 less, the Loveland repair shop I've frequented in the past was over $400 less (obviously, checked after the fact...). If the handful of other shops Jesse quoted are actually within 5%, they are ripping us off too. Jesse would not budge on the final bill, but he did offer to comp me an oil change. As if! I had already told him I would never set foot in BG Automotive again. However, I would take a call from the BG Automotive (Owner) to provide the rest of the story about this pathetic BG encounter.

The majority of the cost was for a diagnostic, which we told them it was only the transmission we wanted checked. When we got the truck home, bults were missing from the shifter plate on the transmission. They took it off but didn't put back on leaving the shifter rattling around. We were told the transmission was fine. We took it to another shop where we discovered the transmission was shot. When we approached to owner we were dismissed and no consideration as a customer at all. No working with us at all. I would not recommend this shop to anyone.

They clearly were very interested in making their past mistake right and I was told the mechanic who worked on my car initially had been let go. I can say definitively say that if issue do arise, the managers will make it their priority to try and make things right. I can appreciate that. The work on my car was minor and didn't not require a lot of skilled labor so it's hard for me to definitely say if their current techs are more qualified. Hence the 4 stars instead of 5.

From the start, customers were treated in a dismissive, defensive, and at times openly disrespectful manner. Multiple customers asked simple, reasonable questions about pricing, labor, or what work was being done. Instead of clear answers, they were met with vague responses, attitude, and an unwillingness to explain charges. On more than one occasion, it was essentially communicated that if customers didn't like the pricing or how things were handled, they could go somewhere else. It became clear this business takes advantage of the fact that most customers are not mechanics. Pricing lacked transparency, explanations were avoided, and there was little effort to help customers understand what they were paying for. The most disturbing part--and the main reason I am writing this--was how a young female customer (who appeared to be a Colorado State University student) was treated. When she asked basic questions about her vehicle and potential repairs, she was dismissed and talked down to. She was told to wait and that everything would be explained later, without being given the respect of understanding what was happening in the moment. The interaction came across as sexist and demeaning. It was uncomfortable to witness and completely inappropriate. No customer should be made to feel they don't deserve to understand what is being done to their own vehicle. This was not isolated. In just one hour, I observed multiple customers being treated poorly, suggesting a consistent pattern. Any business has the right to operate as it chooses. But customers have the right to transparency, respect, and to not be treated in a dismissive or sexist manner. I would strongly recommend others proceed with caution and consider shops where professionalism, communication, and respect are standard.
