I went to Great Clips on a Thursday evening to get a haircut. I checked in on the app but because it was a Thursday evening there wasn't a wait. My stylist had my notes from last time and that saved me from having to explain how I wanted my hair cut. My stylist was nice and friendly. I was in and out in about 15 minutes. I've been going to this location for 3 years and 9/10 times I get a good fade haircut. I've tried out 3 different barbers in Arlington Heights. All of them were terrible. Very disappointed with my hair. My hair is very damaged yet I'm terrified of hairdressers. I had an inspiration photo, and wanted 2.5 inches off. But i feel as if it's shorter than 2.5 inches, and very choppy, and a big section of my hair in the front is super short (jawbone length) and the inspiration photo didn't have any of that. Pretty much a you-get-what-you-pay-for hair cut place. There's always coupons here fortunately so at least for men you can get your hair cut frequently for only a fraction of the cost of other nearby shops. I've never had a bad cut here, but I've also never had one that I was super impressed with either (pretty easy clipper cut for me most of the time though). One of the nice things about this location is that there's plenty of parking in the strip mall. But the downside is that you also can't park directly in front of the store and you'll have to cross the street to get your haircut. Wait times typically aren't too long here, store size is pretty normal for Great Clips, and cleanliness is fairly standard. Overall, not a great and not a bad place for a haircut -- but alright if you're value oriented. read more

I asked Dotty for a 2" trim with a 1" layer at the bottom, and an angled bang in front because I part my hair. She needed to ask assistance from another stylist because she didn't feel confident in her "angling abilities." The cut looked okay from the back, but when I came home and brushed my hair, my hair was cut 1" shorter on the right, and the "layers" looked so blunt and choppy! I just emailed HQ, and will provide a photo. When she rang me up, I wanted to purchase a container of J Crew forming cream, which was labeled $16.95 on the shelf. It rang up at $17.95, and Dotty had to call a manager on the phone because she didn't know how to correct the price, and the manager told her to ring me up for more than what the shelf was labeled. Hi, I got my hair cut by Bessie a couple weeks ago in the Arlington Heights location near dicks. She never showed me the back with the miror and I had to tell her to slow it down so the clippers can actully cut every hair. She apparently didn't think it was necessary and kept up the fast pace when nobody was even waiting. This was fixed at a different location later in the day. Anyhow, after Bessie cut my hair, I got into my car and saw she failed to cut my sides to the same lenght. (Probably 1/2 in differnce between sides lenght). So I went back in, no appology and actually no talk what-so-every after I asked her to fix it. So after she fixed that and I got up and left the store without saying a word, and neither did Bessie. Very strange moment and not customer friendly at all... Got home and noticed the back was very uneven and my whole head had hairs were cut inconsistently. So I drove 8 miles to the Buffalo Grove store where they did a redo and fixed the shit-show job Bessie did. I tipped the dude there $5. So I spent $27 for my haircut which consumed 3 hours of my only day off. I called the main office and reported my compliant. The best they would do is (supposedly) notify the owner who would get back to me. almost 3 weeks now and apparently the owner doesnt care. It was my first ever visit to Great Clips at Arlington Heights at 377 E Palatine Rd. I have a medical problem lifting my left arm/shoulder and due to COVID I let my hair grow. Cindy my hair stylist was excellent . I showed her a past picture of myself with the preferred cut & she did a wonderful job. Cindy is gentle and listens to the needs of her clients. Also, as a guy, I don't mind playing hair cutter roulette. I figure, how hard could it be to buzz the sides and blend the rest to a nice short length? Not too hard? On any note, the last couple of visits here I asked for the same thing. #whatever on the sides and short on top to blend it with the rest. just barely long enough to do something with it. I needed a haircut, nothing special, something fast and inexpensive. Usually I hate these walk-in places. Today everything went perfectly. Walked in, no line, no wait, in and out in about 15 or 20 minutes. Not to be rude, but I hate having to make conversation with someone who is holding scissors half an inch from my ears and eyes. It makes me nervous and the conversation is never interesting (they always ask about you, and my life is pretty boring so, you get the idea). The stylists were not friendly or talkative and then their computer system started having issues meaning we had to pay for my siblings and I in two deprecate payments. My sister also asked for layers and got none. I am rather upset and angry as I will be taking photos with this. They complained about their tip too! It was a BAD $8 hair cut. Rude from the get go because our account "didn't have notes" FYI people cut hair before there were "notes in the system". A 2 is a 2 here and in every other barber shop. Both my sons got their hair cut by Brenda. One son got his hair cut in about 4 minutes and it looked horrific. I could have done a better job after drinking 2 bottles of wine. We asked her to fix the lines that were left on his head, but it was hopeless. Our next son was up and he asked for a high and tight. Brenda didn't know what that was and my son had to explain it as she was cutting. His hair cut took about 11 minutes and looked as good as a 14 year old directed hair cut could look. We then asked for our first sons hair to be fixed for the 3rd time. Brenda told us she did all she could and Kathy or Kate or whatever her name was had to fix it. What a waste of my night. She looked again and said (there was a language barrier here-either Polish or Russian) she would have to use clippers..15.00 As I held the stray hair out said all I wanted was for her to take her "scissors" for one minute and "cut the few stray hairs" Still $15.00..7 was fine NO CLIPPERS not 15! Then I thought I better get out of there and not let her anywhere near my hair! Tried to go and get my son and my haircut yesterday (Mother's Day) as it was raining I dropped my son and girlfriend by the door and went to park. As I'm getting out of the car my girlfriend tells me they said they are closed. Really your hours say that you are open till 6pm so why at 545 are you turning away business? Can I give NO STARS! I have been here before to cut off the ponytail to donate to a worthy cause. Didn't even bother me when the stylist (Dottie), said we don't give free cuts anymore for that. Okay, no big deal, I do it for the cause, not the free haircut. I brought pictures to show how I wanted my hair cut after the ponytail was chopped off. This lady had no idea how to even prepare the ponytail, she had to ask another lady. The next lady said you have to have a minimum of 12". I told her another charity states minimum 8". If the 12" will cut it too short, then cut only what can be done to have my hair lower than my chin. DO NOT cut so short it will be above my chin. I requested a wash, as charities ask the donated hair to be freshly washed. She denied my request with "we don't shampoo hair, and blow dry, before we cut off a ponytail". Huh? all other hair cuts I have had, my hair was washed PRIOR to cutting. I had to ask again for a shampoo after she cut the ponytail! She was actually going to cut it dry? Maybe spritz with water? I saw the ponytail. I warned it looks like it will make my hair too short. Dottie says no it will fall forward after I cut the ponytail. I am not a stylist. I showed her pictures of what I was looking for. At no time did she say "where I am cutting the ponytail, your hair will be too short to cut in the style requested" Instead I get the "I know what I am doing" attitude. Ok, I am nervous about cutting the hair off. I was very clear how short I DID NOT WANT. She must know what she is doing??????? Guess not. I was going to an inverted bob. The front had only a small a section not cut as short, there was no layering of hair to give a gentle sloop from back to front. Just short and then one tiny section below my chin line. It looked like "oops, someone forgot to finish the cut". I was not able to stop the few tears that fell. She suggested feathering bangs to soften the cut. I said no. I did not want her to attempt anymore. She chopped the back, she said it was layered! BS it was chopped in such short layers I can't get a curling iron to even grab sections in the back!!!!! I didn't even want to pay for the botched job! So upset, just wanted to go home and cry. No way did I want to cause a scene and have police called in for my refusal to pay. Worst hair cut ever. Beware of Kathy and her manager. Before I tell about my most recent experiences, I'm guessing that they changed their phone number. I got a great haircut in July from Kathy. It looked like the picture, had bounce and swing and volume and I got a lot of compliments. So I went back in August for a trim. Kathy was getting ready to go home so her manager took me. I wanted to show her the picture but she insisted that she knew how to cut my hair the style I wanted. When she finished, it was flat, straight, and got no compliments. I waited 6 weeks for my hair to grow out. It was a few days before a 50 year reunion. I made sure I went in the middle of Kathy's shift. She said she didn't need to see the picture. She remembered and I was so relieved. While she was cutting my hair, she received and made a number of phone calls. Her Jr. High school aged daughter was experiencing some drama with another girl at school. When she finished, my hair did not look anything like what I wanted. I did not dare to complain because of Kathy's mood. Everyone I saw said this was the worst haircut they had ever scene. Two days later I came back and asked to have my haircut fixed. The manager sat me in her chair and I insisted on showing her the picture. She said that style needed a flat iron. It didn't before and besides, I used a ceramic brush. Then she said that it needed no layers and my hair now had layers. I asked if she could make it as much like the picture as possible. "No.", was her answer. I was about to cry when Kathy started explaining how she had overcut and undercut and some other terms I never heard of. She seemed willing to help me, so I moved to her chair. She clipped and cut and texturized like Edward Scissorhands. When she was done, inches of my hair lay on the floor. Not only is this hair cut nothing like what I wanted, it will take a year for it to grow out enough to get back to what I wanted. In the meantime, all my cowlicks are out of control. The hair lies in an ugly mess and I look best with it under a hat or scarf. People not only comment about it being an ugly hair cut but also ask if I did it myself. read more

I got a fantastic haircut from here! All I wanted was about 4 inches cut off and some long layers. My stylist Ekaterini (that's what it said on the receipt) gave me exactly what I wanted in less than 30 minutes! I've gotten my hair cut at fancy salons and this cut is equivalent to what I've gotten done before and I only paid $15 plus tip for it. The waiting time wasn't bad either: just 10 minutes without online checkin or appointment. The words you get what you pay for is pretty applicable here. It is only $15 for a haircut and it is a hair salon chain. There is no schedule for appointments as there are only walk-ins but they do accept credit cards which is very nice. If you want a simple buzz and a fast efficient haircut, this place is probably deserves 5 stars. If you want anything other than a buzz then you are better off going elsewhere. I came here for the past 2 years but I elected to stop because I wanted more style and I was tired of the fact that they would cut much more of my hair then I asked or would just buzz me regardless of what I asked. If you come here, my word of advice would be to simply underestimate how much you want cut off because these people cut much more than you tell them to. I remember only asking for like half an inch in the front of my head/hair and they still buzzed me anyways. There is only one stylist that is very good although I do not remember her name. She is of Hispanic descent but she gave by far the best haircuts when I went here. Everyone else is a complete crapshoot. The other stylists sometimes forget simple things and make really poor mistakes. Sometimes they forget to show you the back of your head to see what work they did on there, sometimes they forget to trim or even the sides, and many times your hair ends up being uneven. I can't count the amount of times where I left being satisfied only to come home and realize they made some poor mistakes. I remember my worst experience on here was when I was buzzed when I warned them that the last thing I want is a buzz. One of the stylists kept arguing with me saying it wasn't when it was since I know what a buzzcut looks like. She also thought the back of my hair was even when I could clearly see for myself it wasn't and that part of the hair was sticking out because it wasn't trimmed properly. I have had Cindy more than a few times since I have been getting my haircut there and she never disappoints. She really made sure it was a good haircut, because being a college student. I will never go to Great Clips ever again. The service I received was insurmountably bad. I visited this location three times, every time I was subjected to the same stylist. The final time was the straw that broke my back. My overall feeling is that this place is like a hair cut assembly line; they'll get you in and out as soon as possible trying to get as many haircuts done in an hour. I made the mistake of going to this Great Clips three times. You see, I'm usually tired after work, and I'd rather spend my time doing other things during my weekends, so a quick haircut at the place across the street should be simple enough, right? Experience #1 (A New Hope): Not too crowded, but I still have to wait a few minutes. Not bad. An older, thin lady, hereafter referred to as Ms. X, calls my name and I sit in her chair. I tell her that I just want a trim. Usually, I put my hair up into a pompadour sort of thing, but my hair is down at the moment in an attempt to save her from having to wash out all the product I normally use. She must have had issues visualizing what I wanted because she started hacking away at seemingly random parts of my head. In short, I'm in her chair for seven minutes tops. She asks me if I want her to style it for me. I reply, "No, I'm just to jump in the shower when I get home anyway, so don't waste your product." She pays no heed and spikes my hair in a fashion that made me look like Jim McMahon circa 1985 (good year for the Bears, bad year for hair). The up side is that my wife and I laughed about it for a good hour. Overall, unsatisfied with my haircut. Experience #2 (The Clippers Strike Back): Not too crowded, but I still have to wait a few minutes. Not bad. Several stylists, including Ms. X, are working. A younger, more progressive looking, stylist finishes up and is cashing out her client. I'm next in line. All of a sudden, a different stylist starts talking to her, and while they're chatting it up about who should be voted of American Idol, Ms. X slips in and calls my name. Same hair cut. Same chopping method. When I ask her to take more off the top (this is me preemptively trying to stretch out the time until I need another haircut), she looks at me like I just insulted her when I should have been kissing her feet. I guess, she thought the length was perfect despite the customer wanting something else. She minimalized her way through cutting it down more. When she was "finished", I was luckily able to convince her not to make me looking like a 1980's playboy about to hit the club. Still unsatisfied. Experience #3 (Return of Idiot): My fault. My fault. I should have never gone back. But, alas, I found myself there yesterday. Not too crowded. Again, many stylists. This time, I know Ms. X is going to get me. In fact, I bet she had been waiting silently in inky shadows ready to run out and trap me in her web like my own personal boogie stylist. My name is called, I know that voice. I sit in her chair, the tissue paper tight around my neck, her hands clenching her shears. How many victims have fallen to those shears? I say these exact words, "I'm looking to cut all my hair off. Let's go really short. Medium/short on the sides. Leave a tiny, tiny bit more length on the top to texturize." Quoth Ms. X, "What number?" Having not used clippers in over 6 years, I reply, "I don't know. I never use the clippers." The random hacking begins. I can hear my individual hairs screaming out to me. "Why?" they shout, "Why?" I stop her. She is simply giving me a trim, not what I asked for. "Let's go shorter," I say. Quoth Ms. X "What number?" Again, I don't know. She starts counting, "1? 2? 3?" Fully aware what numbers are and the sequence in which they go, I tell her that I want a 4. It was all arbitrary at that point. I figured that I was going to leave with a shaved head anyway. She tells me that a 4 is too short. Why then did she recommend 1,2, and 3? I tell her again to use the 4. I get that look, once again. How dare I ask this of her?! She finished up this sides, I have to remind her to cut the back as well...the 1980's lurk over my shoulder once again. Now I look like a mushroom. She goes back to hacking away at the top of my head. "Let's just use the clippers on top, too." Quoth Ms. X, "What number?" "7. Just use a 7. That way well have a little length to texturize, if only a little." "7 is too short. I can't texturize with that." "You can't?" "No. It's impossible." "You're telling me that your scissors won't work on hair at a certain length?" By now, our voices have gotten loud enough to attract the attention of all the other stylists. It took me few minutes before I got called in by a young lady. She asked me how I wanted it to be cut. I said the same thing I've always said: clippers on side number 'whatever' and trim with scissors on the top. And she said okay. Started cutting. The clipper side went okay but definitely not on the scissors side. Once she s done, i told her the cut wasnt even. My right and left head aint look the same. When I stopped at this Great Clips for a haircut yesterday, both stylists were busy. (Fine with me.) I listened as the stylist with Bozo-red hair bantered with her gentleman client as though he was her brother, even telling him to shut up. I was appalled. This same young lady finished with him, and I was her next victim. I told her how I wanted my hair cut (I've been a licensed stylist myself for 34 years). When I explained how I wanted my hair layered, she said she did it a different way. It was not what I wanted done to my hair, so I only let her trim the bottom. I felt ripped off. Now I have to pay another shop to do what I ask? Incidentally, I've been going to Great Clips for several years and never encountered a stylist who couldn't do the very basic thing I wanted.
