After a short stay in the hospital I came home to a stopped up kitchen sink. I had exhausted all diy remedies and failed to unplug it. Called a couple of plumbers I've hired before but were booked to far out for me to wait. Called GLP company and they arrived on time. The employees were, one older man and an apprentice. The older man had horrible customer service. Would ask me a question then just walk away while I tried to answer. Or just cut me off. When under the sink I pointed out that the older man was pushing very hard on the doors and I pointed this out. (Afraid the door was going to crack off its hinges.) The older man became visibly annoyed and made an unjustified argumentative comment. Which I choose to ignore. The apprentice did most of the work at this point remaining very quiet. Once fixed the older man said to the apprentice "We're done. Clean up." And proceeded to just walk out and sat in the truck writing up the bill. Never speaking to me. The apprentice did an excellent job cleaning up. He was the employee that brought me the bill. GLP may well be a trusted company but the older man made it to where I will not hire them again. The apprentice is welcome back anytime. Lol Also, I was not informed their debit reader was not working prior to the appointment and could only take cash or check. Thankfully I'm old school and still have a checking account. I then asked if my check would be kept safe in their vehicle till they returned to base I was told they had a lockbox where it would be safe. At the GLP website I couldn't find any ratings from customers. read more

We were referred to Great Lakes Plumbing when our normal contractor was not available, to fix a leak. While we were appreciative to be worked into the schedule (10 days-2 weeks out) we were not happy with the service received. Two employees showed up, one sat in the van and "checked" the work of the one who performed the work. Once completed, trash from the parts were left laying around and a pair of pliers were stolen. The following day, the "repair" was already leaking. The owner DID NOT return a call from us reporting these issues. Paid the full price, but the service and follow up were poor. read more

Booked way out. They called me before the appointment date and we rescheduled for yesterday. I was pretty happy because my wife was sad about the broken faucet. At first I felt like a loser for calling a plumber to change a faucet, but that thing was really on there and they had to cut it off with a sawsall. I'm always polite to service technicians because I know the job is hard. Usually offer coffee and/or water. This guy had "INSTRUCTOR" written on the back of his shirt, so I was pretty surprised at how angry and rude he seemed. His assistant (maybe someone in training) was great and smoothed things over, but I'm no fan of this company. I have a relative in the business. Not sure why I wasted my time. read more

I called about a leak in our hot water pipe, and while they were very busy, since this was right after the "COVID stay at home rule was modified to allow non-essential work", they got someone right over. Within 4 hours the plumber was here, repaired two leaks and was gone within 1 hour. The pipes work perfectly, the cost was reasonable and now I have hot water again! Hurray! We hired Great Lakes Plumbing to move our gas dryer outlet to the adjoining wall with all new lines & shut-offs. The next morning the gas smell woke me up in our bedroom down the hall. My husband shut it off & called Great Lakes Plumbing. It was a holiday weekend & they told him they would call us back Tuesday. By Tuesday afternoon 2-30pm we phoned Consumers Energy letting them know about still smelly gas leek. They came out straight away to find that a flange had not been put in securely & they had never "soaped the connection" to be sure it wasn't leaking! Taking this shortcut is why it was leaking gas into our home. Our bill is $624.50 for a job they did not complete properly. For this reason I would not recommend Great Lakes Plumbing. read more

Prompt, professional service. Technician was pleasant. Several drains in basement had no "S" traps, allowing septic gasses to escape into the house. Technician had to cut into part of the concrete and dig some dirt out. Top quality work in under two hours, and left the area clean. Their office staff are courteous and prompt as well. Used a Groupon for furnace maintenance. I was so unbelievably pleased with the work performed, and especially the amazing customer service these two young men demonstrated. They were kind and understanding with my hyper but friendly 100lb dog, and after the job was completed, the guy answered all my questions and even took me to the furnace to show me a couple of things. He did a great job explaining everything to someone who knows nothing. They used this opportunity to make me a customer again in the future, and I'll recommend them to my friends. We recently purchased a house this past winter that was renovated this past fall. New appliances were installed, including a furnace and water heater. Great Lakes Plumbing installed the water heater. In roughly mid-May we started experiencing problems with the water heater. Great Lakes sent a technician out and, in the span of ten minutes, diagnosed the issue being related to the meter outside the house. He then issued us a bill for $133. Seeing as how this heater is less than a year old and under warranty I inquired about the cost, and it was the service fee rounded up to one complete hour of work. We were told that if the energy company was not able to find something wrong that Great Lakes would send another tech with no additional cost. So we paid the $133. Shortly after the energy company sends a tech out and sure enough the meter outside the house had frozen. After replacing it the water heater seemed to be functioning well again. This was on a Friday. I come home from work Friday evening and within the first hour hear a loud BOOM! My first thought was something fell off the wall. I went downstairs and looked at the heater. It was lit, and was cranked all the way to the hottest setting. I put it back to its normal setting and walked away. Later on that night my wife and I hear it again. It sounds like a shotgun is going off. The next morning I call Great Lakes back and explain this to them. They tell me it is most likely sediment that has built up in the tank and is breaking up and it should correct itself after some time. A friend of mine says he doesn't agree and that we should call the energy company back to have them check for gas leaks. The energy company sends another tech out. I explain to them what is going on. He is standing a few feet away from the heater when it goes BOOM! and he jumps back five feet. He immediately shuts the gas off and puts a "danger tag" on it, saying that there is a delayed ignition and gas is building up in the heater before being lit and causing these mini explosions. He says the heater cannot be used until it is repaired. I called Great Lakes back again and explained this to them. The tech tells me he doesn't agree with the energy tech's assessment, that I still shouldn't be worried about it, but if I want him to come out he'll still stop out. However, I would still incur the $133 charge, a $90+ weekend charge, and parts. I told him this tank is less than a year old and under warranty, plus we've already paid $133 for basically no work done and were told that the next time out we would not have to pay this fee. Well, it turns out that is only in the case of it being during the week. Seeing as how it is the weekend that have to charge, and the warranty doesn't cover this fix. I found it very annoying that this company would not uphold the warranty on the product they installed nine months ago, and seemed insistent on charging us so much money to complete the task. I told him no thanks, we'll pass and explore other options. I then called the manufacturer of the water heater. The warranty division was still open for the weekend, and they informed me they can send a tech out during the week to have a look. If the product is malfunctioning they will fix it for no charge, but if something was wrong with the installation then we would be responsible for a fee. They will be sending someone out this Monday. Great Lakes Plumbing is a company that we have used once in the past at a previous residence, but with a little research online found several other plumbing companies in the area and will no longer be calling them for service. read more

When a shower handle sheared off, I called Great Lakes for a repair. These handles are designed for a front access repair, negating the need for a trap. But the repairman said that the way it sheared he could not extract the cartridge, so he cut a hole through the rear wall making a trap entrance and replaced the whole unit. Total cost was $850 and the trap is obtrusive on a stairway wall. I have two other of the same units and did not want a repeat of the problem. I called Great Lakes and left a message with the receptionist about preemptively replacing the cartridges. She said someone would call me back. No one called back. After several weeks I contacted Moen, the manufacturer, to order cartridges so I could replace them myself. When I explained to the technician what had happened with the repaired unit, he said that no matter how closely the handle sheared off, the cartridge could still be removed. He described the simple method for extracting a damaged cartridge. He expressed surprise that the plumber did not call at least Moen first before proceeding the installing a trap. He estimated that the job would take less then an hour. I wrote to Great Lakes explaining this and got no reply. I won't use the company again and suggest that others use caution.
