This is our go-to spot for Chinese food when visiting family in Monterey. It is a family owned restaurant which is located in a little plaza on a busy street. There is plenty of parking, but it is easy to miss this spot if you are not looking. You can tell this is a local spot because the owners know all of their regular guests and what they like to order. We have tried a lot of items on their menu, but my kids love their Chow Mein and Chow Fun. My favorite is their salt and pepper chicken wings. The wings are perfectly crunchy, but not dry. They have just enough seasoning but not overpowering the chicken. Their portion sizes and prices are very fair compared to similar places. We love Chinese food and have tried various restaurants throughout California. This is one of our favorites because of the quality and the service. The food was ok. I remember it being much better. Halfway through my meal, I found a hair in my food. The waitress seemed confused, so I repeate believe the manager was right next to her again. I was net with no response, so I paid for our meal, tipped 25% & left pissed off they did not comp my meal. Resrurant was dirty & and empty, NEVER AGAIN!! Waitress was good, which is why the 25% & 2 stars. I worked in hospitality for 45 years, so we would have removed that meal from the bill, no questions asked, as well as apologize. My wife and I dined here on Monday night and got severe food poisoning. We were in the hotel room the whole next day behind sick (no need for details) we ordered the mango chicken, pork chow mein, rice, hot and sour soup. I'm not sure which item caused all the damage, but it was one of the worst episodes of food poisoning I can remember in my adult life. Do not recommend. read more

Safe harbor statement, I am a massive fan of Tommy Wok in Carmel with more than 50 check ins... I found Tommy's some 10 years ago and since then we don't bother going anywhere for our fix (eggplant dish is to die for ) .. On a recent hunt for Dim Sum through the NextDoor community the overwhelming comments were I have to goto San Fransisco or best local is Dim Sum inn in Salinas BUT interestingly the Great Wall restaurant was overwhelmingly mentioned as an awesome Chinese.. So with my preset bias to Tommy's and ample curiosity for if this place could match up we headed over to GW a few days ago... My wife and I split a few plates, Crab Rangoon to start, Szechuan Prawn and veggie fried rice for main... We kept it simple and familiar to draw some comparison and annoyingly it was as good as had been suggested and edged comfortably into out 1st place goto slot. net net, Tommy's although absolutely wonderful will now been replaced with GW... Five star for food & service. Singapore noodles, Mongolian chicken & honey walnut shrimp are my favorites. But, I have yet to have a bad dish. Four star for ambiance. Most of the décor remains from the previous occupant, Farrell's Ice Cream. The old Farrell's G scale train still makes rounds of the restaurant. The facility is always clean & well organized. We were starving when we went here, and they had opened an hour before. I'm not saying I wouldn't go back but most of the items we asked to order they were out of. No noodles, no brown rice, and some of the main dishes. We ordered orange chicken and kung pao chicken. It wasn't bad, but on an honest review, Panda was better. Usually we look for great flavor, hot, orange chicken crispy and it wasn't any of those. On top of everything the lunch pricing was more like dinner pricing. When I first walked in, I thought based on the decor, the food would be bad, as that it is wonderfully decorated. I was pleasantly surprised with some of the best Chinese food I've had in months. The Peking Duk was moist and freshly prepared. The Mongolian beef was just the right level of spiciness, and I finished every single little piece. Food was delicious and the service was great too. Right across from our hotel and it was perfect.

I really would love to rate them higher because the food is really tasty. I have a few complaints that will keep me from frequently visiting. 1. Customer service not thrilled with last service experience as I sat for over 10 mins without any acknowledgement as other patrons arrived after and received service before me. Caused me to have to leave with food to go because I was running late back to work. 2. Hours not accurate on here, I walked from my office to come in only to be told they were not open yet. Apparently they open at 11:30a not 11a I understand the impact to the service industry and am more than willing to be patient and understanding but common do not ignore me or act like I'm crazy for waking in when your door is open for business. read more

Mmm ... hot and sour soup! What a great meal it makes -- and some places will discourage ordering this alone as an entire meal but not this place, thankfully. I came here several times, mostly to get my beloved (and vegetarian) hot and sour soup but once, I wanted to get something small to eat outside during the day by the water, and just got some little appetizer and that was it; I really appreciate a place that does not try to oversell me and give me too much food. I think a lot of places do that for the sadly-obvious reason of making more money and/ but it's ironic because I am much more likely to go back to a place that doesn't do that and they'll make more money overall that way ... oh, yeah, I also got rice! Rice in soup, mmm .... :-) Culturally and vibe-wise, it made me feel more Asian overall and like I should be doing martial arts again -- no, not every Asian or Chinese restaurant makes me feel that way! (In fact, that is a rarity ... ) I didn't really think about the size of my soup; I'm not sure I ever really looked at their menu until now. We are from out of town and wanted to eat somewhere we couldn't have just had back home. The food was amazing! Perfect amount of flavor. Customer service was excellent, and the staff was super friendly! Service was quick but did not feel rushed at all. They even gave my son a couple of pieces of candy on our way out. Great Wall was a great find while visiting Monterey. The place is immaculate, the service professional and friendly, and the food excellent. We each had a "small" soup - one sizzling rice and one Wor Wanton. Both were piping hot and delicious. I put "small" in quotes because the small is enough for an appetizer for two or three and a main dish for one. The one disturbing thing was only two other tables occupied while we were there. As a vegetarian I really appreciate when a business has a separate menu for vegetarians and Great Wall does! You do need to ask for it. There were at least 3 soup options, six or seven appetizers, and twenty main dishes to choose. I ordered veggie pot stickers and it included eight--enough for a group. I also had the garlic broccoli tofu, which was tasty. The sauce was tasty, the broccoli crisp but cooked and I liked the sesame sprinkled over everything. I am surprised this place has average reviews! We stayed at Hotel Abrego across the street and I was in dire need of some Hot and Sour Soup! I wasn't expecting much because it's Asian food in a touristy area and it's Yelp review wasn't that good. However, it was definitely one of the better places we've had in Monterey!
