I come here for fresh produce and ingredients for Asian cooking. I came to this grocery store many, many years ago with a former roommate who was from China. I was told this is a Chinese grocery store chain, as opposed to Korean. I prefer Asian markets for the produce. The prices are reasonable, it's fresh and there is a much wider variety of vegetables. This is for the hole in the wall cafe in the back of the supermarket called Shanghai Restaurant. I haven't been to this supermarket in a long time. Having relocating to a new office in the area, I was craving some authentic Chinese food for lunch. Upon walking into the supermarket, I knew something smelled different. Gone (or under repair) is the wet market. No fish in tanks, no turtles swimming around and no clams or crabs over ice. Honestly, the place smelled better. However, was the restaurant with the roasted meals and Chinese entrees still there? Yes! $8.49 for a meal of rice and 2 sides (1 veggie + 2 meat choices), plus a soup. I added a ginormous sesame ball (filled w red bean paste. I was hoping for lotus but yeah for price of $1.99 not happening). Total of $11.11. What did I get? Beef tendon with radish (mostly if not all radish and chuck). I'd pass. Eggplant. Yep, I'll get again. Pork patty. Yep, I'll get again. A soup came with the meal. It was tomato. It was OK. Great selection of Asian food, especially Chinese food. Good prices too. I think they could work on their cleanliness though. The smell hits you hard when you enter. Also the quality of food and service isn't as high. My mom and I have bought a few foods that were moldy before from this chain. She said she had to really argue with customer service to get her money back. Not as high quality as hmart. I like their food court. Highly recommend getting one of their sesame balls. They are GIANT and they don't skimp on the red bean filling. They also have big zongzi and baozi here. I got a zongzi to celebrate the Dragonboat festival from here and it was delicious! Their food platter is also a good deal. I think only $7 after 6pm and $9 before for a rice/noodle and 2 dish choices. They taste good but can cause bloating. Got some food at back cafe, and half of it was cold right then & there. The orange chicken is probably a contender for worst orange chicken I've ever had. It had almost no orange flavor, was weirdly more pink than orange, and looked unappetizing. The pork I got was mediocre and the baby bok choy and the rice were decent. Today (1 day after purchase) I went to eat the rest of the leftovers, and found a nice strand of clear plastic in the food. I have quickly fallen in love with this Asian market. As a vegan, I'm able to find enormous quantities of wonderful things here to cook for my family's plant-based diet that I can't find anywhere else. Shelves stay well stocked, the store is bright and clean, there's hardly any wait at check out because they keep many registers running every day. Cashiers are friendly and welcoming. In addition to normal Chinese staples, I appreciate the large selection of teas, sauces, beautiful produce, ramen, desserts, spring rolls, dumplings, and so on. There is a very bad smell particularly in the middle of the store where there are open cases of frozen food with chilled cans and bottles of drinks above. I was going to get a drink for the drive back to DC, but then I thought nah because of the smell. We found all of the sauces on our list eventually, but we were puzzled why oyster and fish sauces were in a separate aisle from the tamari and hoisin sauces. It's probably the time of day (5:30-6:00 pm), but the bakery and hot deli food were decimated. Finally, checking out was slow because only two lanes were open. read more

I went inside specifically to get bags of bean sprouts and was disappointed because of the merchandise set up. This particular store seemed to only have bag it yourself bean sprouts and no pre-washed and pre-packaged bean sprouts. Bean sprouts are notorious for causing food-borne illness. It is also hard to wash them individually. I find it unsafe for consumption when the bag-it-yourself bean sprouts have zero covering over it and would be so easily contaminated during the bagging process --just imagine how many different unwashed hands picking through them to bag it. Yuck. Knowing how we are all attempting to avoid COVID-19 or food-borne illness whenever possible, I left without purchasing anything at this location. While walking to the store, I was great by the stink of trash or was it fish? Seafood has that smell and it us something I am not accustomed to. Still after a short while, you stop smelling it. Hey, if the greater goods are here, then this is where we are going. Today we found Hello Kitty Mug and a new mug bowl to replace the Hello Kitty mug bowl. I am not a Hello Kitty fan, but I understand the importance of personal object one treasures. On our way to the checkout line, people were all over the place. Six feet distance was few and far in between. I glanced down and saw a jade dragon ship in every sense of the word. It was undoubtedly made of plastic for hundred twenty eight dallors. Nevertheless, it gave me an idea for one of my characters in my book. I might go back for the dragon ship on day. If I do not,..."C'est La Vie say the old folks to show them that you never can tell." Upon checking out, the language barrier came into the picture, but we made it out okay. Talking in Spanish seemed to do the trick, since most of the staff are either Hispanic or Asian. Hey!, the best of both worlds. This was the busiest I have ever seen this place. The Great Wall and Unique (a second hand store) are now the two main headliners. I think if this shopping Center ever got closed down, it would become a new area for residency. A new addition for the Mosaic Center. In the meantime, The Great Wall will continue to me a main source for many families at a decent price. The place is we stocked and finding watchable want or whatcha need is easy. Horrible customer service. The cashier and her group of coworkers(they were Spanish) treated me horribly and even verbally assaulted saying 'What, you don't get confused?' when I pointed out that I was expecting a simple apology for their mistake instead of her spending time with coworkers, giggling, looking at me as if I was begging for 50 cents which was the result of the cashier's mistake. Did I know if it was 50 cents we end up talking about? No. I just told the cashier that she checked out for a wrong item. She had me stood there without telling me what she was going to do and instead she and her colleagues were talking and laughing, peaking at me as if they were talking about me as a petty person who was desperate for 50 cents. I understood the cashier was just a kid but it was so insulting that she and even her senior(a friend cashier) refused to apologize me, not even for their mistake but for having me wait for so long. And they looked at me as if saying that you got your 50 cents so now get out. Absolute worst experience of grocery shopping. A very dangerous place to shop. They overcharged my mother $25 and when she went back they pulled her up on the cameras. They showed her what she purchased on the camera and said it's called a certain name and is $6 a pound... she then went back to the stands to check and the item was indeed $2 a pound and called something completely different .... When she pointed it out, the staff explained they call vegetables different names week by week and have different prices week by week..... I mean you can't make this up .... They never refunded her and she actually felt physically unsafe as they were all very aggressive male staff members.... And she is an elderly petite lady.... This GW hits the spot whenever we need a quick bite and are in the mood for Chinese food. We usually do the lunch boxes with 2 meats and 1 vegetable and they have a variety to choose from. Found this food area in the back if the store, my receipt said Shanghai Restaurant. I didnt know how to order or cost so i watched others, was asked what i wanted i pointed to eggplant & veg stir fry with fried tofu, went to pay snd the woman said, one more choice - so with glee i picked the fried prawns. I was nicely surprised that the lunch box was under $7.98 and its all food i really have not been able to get nor get in the lunch box way so that i don't have to buy a whole container at other restaurants, i was also surprised with the bonus hot & soup which i think helped my flu symptoms and the spicy helped warm me quickly as it was wet & below freezing with wind factor that day. I hope its consistently "ono" on my next visit! Gosh i wish i were nearer to a plave like this iits only when i travel am i lucky to find places like this. This is a review from my most recent visit to GW Supermarket two days ago. I have shopped here numerous times before, whenever I needed spices and condiments for my Szechuan cooking. This time I was here to get Suimiyacai for making Dan Dan noodle. I had never bought it before and I looked all aisles but could not find it. When I came to the register to pay for some other items I got attracted while looking for suimiyacai, I asked the register lady by showing the photo of suimiyacai package I had on my phone if the store carried it. She said she would go check and ran out of her booth and came back a few minutes later with a couple of boxes of suimiyacai for me. No wonder I could not find it. It was in a paper box instead of a pouch. I thanked her and bought one box and I was a very happy customer. This lady really impressed me with the extra service. I've been to many GWs in the area and this one is pretty big. I picked up a few staples and decided to check out the food court. Although I didn't get anything, there were a ton of different dishes to choose from and the pricing is dirt cheap based on the portions you get. Will have to try it sometime. 3.5 Stars Compared to H Mart, Great Wall is not clean. However, you can get fresh non-organic produce and seafood. If you, like me, are comfortable cooking whole fish, this is a great spot as the options are plentiful and the staff present will gladly gut our your fresh and wash it. I have also purchased whole lobster here, and they were pretty fresh. As for land animals, I'd suggest going elsewhere. The only exception I have made is oxtail as that comes frozen. My favorite things about Great Wall are their premade food sectio, noodle offerings, and sauce selection. They serve cafeteria-style, authentic Cantonese food, including crispy roast pork (with skin), chicken and duck by the pound (usually $12-13/lb). There is also a bakery session, serving pineapple buns and the like -- very fresh! As for noodles, there is a fresh noodle section, so you can purchase ramen, udon, egg, and rice noodles to cook in homemade broth. Lastly, there is a very nice sauce selection. If you're into chili sauces, you will be ecstatic here. There are at least a dozen types of sa te sauces -- I'm still working my way through. I come to Great Wall Supermarket once a week, and I eat or take out the combo food almost everytime I shop here. Most of time they were no issue, although I have found the fuqifeipian or the chicken feet was not fresh sometime(I don't buy these items anymore). My parents-in-law just told me the combo food they purchased from two days ago were not fresh(the meat smelled sour), they went inside and exchanged it. I thought it was just their bad of luck one time. Today, I went to buy a combo, I planed to take the food home to eat, but I was too hungry that I can't wait, I ate them in the car. Everything was fine until I almost finished my lunch box, I found a dead bug/roach underneath of the food(it seemed like was from the rice), oh, it's actually only half of the dead body.... Coming from LA, I needed an Asian supermarket next to me. This place is a great substitute. Decently cheap Asian supermarket with fresh groceries and a dank 5-star food court. Oh, let me tell you about the food court. This is the classic Chinese cafeteria with the pork belly, chinese cabbage, beef tendon, you name that body part, they probably have it. My friend calls it scoopy food. The cafeteria lady will scoop you two meat selections, 1 vegetable selection, a healthy portion of rice, and a soup (my favorite is the hot sour soup, but they only make one batch in the morning). If you're coming for dinner, come before 7 PM - they'll run out of food. One of the foods that they took out of cafeteria selection is the pig ears. I miss them. The price of this place also increased within a year, from $6 to $6.50 to $6.89 (this price includes tax). I'm not complaining though - it's still cheap dank chinese comfort food. I have definitely had better in the past. I'm thinking it's because I was there at an off time around 3:30 on a weekday so dim sum selection was slim and food not as fresh. The lady behind the counter was very aggressive and direct. I'm chinese myself so I'm used that but Americans would definitely find it offensive.
