Bottom Line Up Front: Great Wall Supermarket is a cramped Chinese grocery store that has decent selection at affordable prices, but gets so busy it's not worth going to except right when it opens or right before it closes. The Layout: Like most other Asian grocery stores, it is poorly laid out. Great Wall's goal appears to be to pack in as much product as possible in its average-size store rather than focusing on the customer experience. In the produce section, you can barely get two carts to pass each other in opposite directions. Same story in the aisles with shelves. All it takes is one inconsiderate shopper to stop in the middle and there's an instant traffic jam. The Checkout Area: Same deal here. Great Wall packs pallets of products all around the cash registers to try to get people to make last-minute impulse buys when this area could be used instead to have logical serpentine lane dividers that could control the crowds who have lined up to pay. Instead, people form long lines that spill into the aisle with shelved products, preventing those who are still shopping from finding the items they need. The Customer Service: It's fine, which is a nice surprise -- most Asian establishments have horrible customer service with bad management. Workers aren't super friendly nor will they go out of their way to help you, but they are quick and competent. The Selection: The produce section has a good array of Asian fruits and veggies, but it's not as extensive as other places. They didn't have the one vegetable I was looking for: rau muong (AKA water spinach or ong choy) during my visit. There's a large meat and seafood section, a good amount of seasoning and dry goods, and a decent frozen food section. The Prices: Shockingly, the prices were moderate to affordable. A nice change of pace in the current economy of inflation and overpriced products. The Conclusion: Despite the selection and affordability, the layout, overcrowding, and lack of good management makes this grocer place low on my go-to list. Great Wall Supermarket is a very appropriate name, as the long lines of people waiting to check out blocks the aisles like the famous fortified structure in China. I had not been to this Great Wall (GW) Supermarket in over 6+ years, until a week ago. I was in the plaza to grab some food and while I was waiting for it to be ready, I stopped by GW to grab a few items. Last month, I shopped at the GW Supermarket location in Covina, due to the convenience of grabbing an item after meeting up with friends for lunch at Haven City. Even though Rowland Heights (and the surrounding areas) are saturated with Asian supermarkets, GW Supermarket is convenient if one is in the plaza grabbing a meal or a drink. It is always about location, location, location... I feel the prices are a bit higher than 99 Ranch or H Mart but it is due to convenience. I only needed to grab an item and looked around, but everything else was just so pricy that I just grabbed the one item. It seems with any GW location, the lines to checkout are always so long, and they had a few open. Parking here is always a bit tight, very narrow parking spots, and with the amount of storefronts is a lot. GW Supermarket would never be my go to, especially for the prices, the not very fresh produce, and the long lines, but it is convenient if I need to grab something if I am in the plaza. read more

Really enjoyed shopping here. The prices are WAY cheaper than in OC and fresher and a lot more choices. Plenty of parking since they are in a big plaza and it's very clean. The staff are nice and very friendly. Was going to get one or two items but ended up getting supplies for 2 weeks of cooking goods plus some Mooncakes boxes for a total of $150. Worst cashier experience ever I had a full shopping cart and lined up at a cashier. As I was about to unload my items, the cashier purposely put up a "Closed" sign without a word. I politely moved to another line, but right after I left, then she removed the closed sign and started taking other customers. I've bought steamed buns from this store four separate times, and twice they were moldy. In both cases, I bought them and brought them straight home, opened the package the same day, and immediately found visible mold on the buns. The packaging is covered with graphics, text, and opaque areas, so customers cannot fully inspect the food before purchasing. The moldy parts were conveniently hidden from view until the package was opened. The first time, I assumed it was an isolated incident. When I contacted the store, they refused a refund unless I physically brought the moldy buns back. Frankly, carrying around rotten, mold-covered food is disgusting, and many customers understandably do not want to do that. After this happened again, it no longer feels accidental. It genuinely feels like this store knowingly sells expired or spoiled food and relies on the fact that many people won't go through the hassle of transporting contaminated food back for a refund. Selling moldy food is unacceptable and a serious health concern. I will not buy bakery products from this store again. read more

This market has virtually no customer service. They never bag your purchases after checkout, which is a pretty basic expectation these days. To make matters worse, security guards are often seen smoking and tossing cigarette butts right in front of the main entrance, which leaves a poor first impression. With so many competitors--like Weee, Yami, H Mart, etc etc. (Walmart, Whole Foods, Trader Joe's etc etc ) --you'd think they would step it up. Atleast these places, items are bagged for you or even delivered to your door. Unfortunately, this level of service falls short, and I won't be returning anytime soon. read more

The set up is similar to those large 99 Ranch grocery stores, but this is an old supermarket with lots of Chinese grocery inventories inside. Different customer base. Don't expect the same type service. Looks slow and you must have patience browsing around. Aisles were organized, but a bit narrow to walk through. Feels congested lining up at front. Lines were extremely long. I was looking at food brands and most packages are definitely from various parts of mainland China with brands I haven't seen before. New experience. Saw lots of delicious beef jerky items and other dried ingredients for cooking. Sauce variety was huge. If I were a local, I would try experimenting those sauces for cooking. They have good varieties inside. It's just hard to pick (too many to choose from). The place gets loud, mainly with Mandarin speaking shoppers and clerks. Yesterday we bought their "SKINLESS" chicken thighs, it turned out they hid all the skin under each thigh, then flipped the meat side up in order to disguise the product to appear skinless to consumers. Absolutely my favorite asian supermarket to go to in this area! (Waaaay much better than 99 ranch) But do be aware that this place is ALWAYS crazy busy and packed. They have a huge parking lot, but once you get inside, you'll constantly be dodging other shoppers and expect super long lines!!! I don't blame why they're always so busy, they literally have almost anything you would need for asian cooking. TONS of selection of delicious and fresh vegetables, meats, sauces, seasonings, snacks, even alcohol !!! This place does not disappoint. Only complaint is that the lines are so long that they merge into the aisles, so sometimes its hard to find what you need, when the aisles are being bombarding by lines. It's weird service. My boy grab a drink, he said he thirsty. When I pay, the cashier told me it's alcohol. At that time she charged my credit card already But I didn't sign. I said no. Walking in here felt honestly good, all the employees were wearing their protective gear. I've been coming here for years and I really appreciate the place having everything Asian and more. I can't wait till we don't have to fear about the COVID-19. Standing on the blue tape feels like I'm back in preschool. Walking around and checking out, seem like everything is pretty well stocked and nothing empty like a few weeks ago. I asked a employee where the Thai basil was and he was kind to me and showed me where it was. And another employee was nice and showed me where the mabo tofu package was, that being said usually at Asian supermarkets they are not friendly but not here. Worst grocery shopping experience ever. I grabbed the things I needed and walked over to pay. The cashier yelled at me in her language. I was confused... why ? Cuz she say I could only pay with new bills? She was crazy. I asked to speak to the manager and a woman came over and told me to go to the bank to change that bill. I am posting this as a warning to all shoppers. The last few times I have bought vegetables that need to be weighed. I noticed that when I get home and I looked at the receipt and then I weigh it at home the weight is different than what is on the receipt and I'm getting charged nearly double. last night around 8 pm, I was in the store, I bought some ginger and I noticed that the cashier, her #1063 Put her finger on the weight. I didn't say anything and waited for the receipt, once I got the receipt. I looked at the weight and what she charged was 7.2oz, and then I got home and I weighed them right away, again they only 4oz. so as a warning, please be aware that when you take up any vegetables to get weighed to pay attention to the cashiers hand that is not on the weight and if you feel that it was not way correctly to have them re-weigh it and have them back off from the weight from the machine to make sure that no part of their body is touching the part of the weight. This is not the first time that this has happened at the store .. I will no longer buy at this store. read more

This place always has fresh frog available! They cut and clean the frog for you too so that you can make whatever dish you want. They have pretty fresh veggies and their oxtails always seems to be on sale. I never have a problem here with parking or the customer service. Attention: Manager of GW market, I come here weekly for grocery shopping. I had very bad experience today with your #7 cashier. I bought over $100 worth of items and requested 3 bags. After she finished processing the scanning, she asked me to hurry up and pack them. I refused to pack them because that's her job. I told her I come here weekly and all other cashiers would pack for me. She then pushed all the items to the side and walked away with some slang words in Chinese which I don't understand. Then another cashier (Ms Zhong) came over and helped out. I appreciate Ms Zhong's great support. I highly recommend you to give #7 cashier a discipline notice with her unprofessional manner and impoliteness to your loyal customer. I tried to ask for manager for support but learned you're on break. She then came back and I asked her last name, which she refused to provide. Then I took below photo and told her I will report her bad behavior. Then she screamed out loud in front of all the customers saying she didn't care. Came in on Thursday afternoon to shop for groceries. This market used to be my favorite. I was looking for something and couldn't find it so I asked the restocking guy (kind of old, I spoke Mandarin to him). He just ignored me for twice. The third time he gave me an attitude saying "#1". I then asked him two very simple questions: where is #1? What aisle am I in? (in Mandarin of course) He then responded to me in a very rude tone -- "自己找 (Go check it out yourself) ! " What the F??? I am a respectful person with good manners. That's also the way I teach my kids -- be polite to people, even to strangers. I just cannot believe what I have been treated in this Chinese supermarket! I If you are not happy working there, maybe you should quit. And if your employees treat customers extremely rude, the management definitely needs to be responsible for this type of behavior! Zero star market, full of nasty employees. Men in the Fish department, a stock man & a woman with glasses in the customer service desk, all are nasty & very bad attitudes toward to customer. Dead Fish took it out from fish tank suppose $2.99 per pound, a man in the fish department weighted as $6.99 per pound, weighted same price as live fish in the tank. Fish department is too busy to listen anything but sale, a stock man was not happy that I asked him who did I talk to regarding this issues, a customer service desk refused to solve this matter.
