Way over priced, and food was just ok. I could get a much better chicken souvlaki at any local diner, and for that price I'd get a side salad and fries. Instead, this is just chicken, onion, tomatoes, and tzatziki wrapped up, and they leave the skewer in it so you have to fumble around freeing the chicken before you can eat. Plus, why did they bother re-branding as a taverna? There is hardly any seating, the chairs look cheap and uncomfortable, and a good portion of the space is taken up by an ice cream center that is made pointless by Denville dairy being right around the corner. Yep, that's two places in one location; I've eaten at both, and whichever way you go the food and service is excellent. Fun, vibrant atmosphere and a super friendly vibe. Decided to go with their specialty Brunch Burger (double smashburger, American cheese, fried egg, bacon, homemade burger sauce, on a branded brioche bun). Keep your fast food burgers, this thick, juicy, tasty, perfectly cooked burger hit all the right buttons. Plus, it was gigantic, came with crispy french fries, and definitely a multi-napkin meal. Being full never stopped me from trying a new dessert that I had so many good things about, so I had to give their Hot Pressed Ice Cream Sandwich (Dutch Apple Pie Ice Cream & strawberry sauce, hot pressed, sealed, and dusted with powered sugar.) *You can choose your filling from a variety of sauces and ice cream. This would clearly qualify as a decadent dessert. Delicious and refreshing! If you're looking for authentic Greek cuisine and/or N.J. Certain things here are tasty, but not everything, and lunchtime is bogged down by inconsistent service that lacks a sense of urgency. I was excited to try Denville's first Greek option when it opened ~3 months ago. Having now sampled their hummus, chicken gyro, and beef gyro, I unfortunately only want to recommend the beef gyro. Here is a well seasoned protein that tastes like it could be from the Mediterranean. By comparison, the chicken is a letdown - fat not trimmed or rendered, and sadly flavorless - and the bland hummus had a coarse texture. I can live with a place where only certain menu items hit the spot, but I can't abide how long it can take at lunchtime to receive my food. On my last visit, my guest and I waited 20 minutes to get a beef gyro and a chicken gyro. Only one other customer came in while we waited. I needed to get back to work! On different visits I've waited between 7 and 12 minutes. It's unfortunate that my experiences have been all over the map here because I definitely want to encourage Denville's eateries to be more diversified. read more

We had a marvelous dinner tonight at Greece Lightning! Adam greeted us as we entered and truly treated us as family. We came with 6 children and 5 adults. Adam was kind, patient and went above and beyond to engage the kiddos and keep everyone happy and very well fed. The food was authentic and absolutely delicious; hummus with warm, fresh pita, real Greek olives, lamb and chicken Gyros, homemade spanakopita and souvlaki, What more can I say, a genuine culinary delight! read more

I ordered the lamb gyro for take out. The menu description stated hand carved leg of lamb and included no other description of what is in the sandwich. I suspected it wasn't really hand carved leg of lamb but traditional lamb gyro meat - which was seasoned well and delicious. I was confused however to find 7 large French fries wrapped into the pita. Never saw that before in a gyro and I removed them. Very skimpy on the tomato and onion and the sauce was not the expected tzatziki. I don't know what the sauce was but it sort of looked like thick curtled milk and didn't have much flavor - certainly nothing like you'd expect with tzatziki. More detailed menu descriptions might help this business. I won't be returning. read more

A very hard NO here. I'm no cheap skate but $17 for a gyro with about three pieces of fatty meat. Greasy fries with no flavor, lamb was fatty, chicken was gross, they don't include any feta with the gyros, tzatziki is extra, and the sauce is comes (not tzatziki) is like thousand island - we didn't like the food here at all and don't recommend. read more

The guy who makes the food for this place should be taken in the middle of town square and hung by his boss the biggest piece of s*** for the highest price I ordered some shrimp extravaganza s*** I don't know and it had tiny specks of feta cheese shrimp that I had to peel. I need the three of those pieces of s*** to get full I ended up eating something else. So to the owner thank you for robbing me blind from this piece of s*** taking my money which it wasn't worth it a dime of it you charge way too much high prices and your food is disgusting. Normally, I reserve raves for second or third visits. Pans, unless the place is dreadful, I follow the same rules. But sometimes, a place is so good, I skip the rules and rave for a place that wowed me. I was headed to the the good new taco place on the corner when my food sense said, take a shot. So glad I did. A spotlessly clean place and a friendly owner greeted me. He recommended the gyro American style and I said yes. So glad I did. He delivered a hot, meat and potato filled pita delight that had me using my napkins like I owned the company. They have lots of tempting taste treats on the menu plus the also have ice cream! I had high hopes and was excited to try because I love Greek food, but this was a major letdown. The staff was nice, the food was awful. My first bite of chicken was all it took. The chicken was super chewy and dark and tasted like chicken (in a bad way, kind of like when fish tastes fishy). I definitely won't be going back. read more

I've been reading about this place for some time, and really wanted to give it a shot as I was going to be in Denville anyway. I read a few other reviews, and I'm somewhere in the middle. I will agree with earlier posts that the place is spotless, very clean and kudos to owner and staff on that. I ordered the beef gyro (yeero), my go-to when dining Med style. For the price, it was quite a bit smaller than I had hoped. Given that it was for dinner after a long day, I honestly could have eaten two of them. It was the strangest gyro I had ever encountered. Instead of slices of white onion, diced tomatoes, lettuce, and spoonfuls of tziki sauce, this was baron of most of that. A few slices of red onion were visible, with several large greek fries on top, and their special sauce to replace the usual tziki. Wasn't sure how I felt about that, but I proceeded. It was good, as the pita was super fresh and the meat was plentiful and amazingly seared & seasoned. It was very tasty, I just had to get used to the fries invading the space. I did miss the tziki, however, as there wasn't the usual cucumber/garlic tang that I'm accustomed to. I also ordered the greek fries, which were cooked perfectly and quite good. As to the humus, I will agree with others who mentioned it's a bit course for their liking. Too thick, you can feel it and I just prefer a slightly creamier version. It was heavily loaded with garlic, that I instantly detected....and that's not a bad thing. I will be back, but I wish the owners would offer two versions of beef yeero - Greece Lightning style, and traditional that mirrors more of what I listed above. It's a tad on the expensive side, but everything seemed really fresh. Give it a try.... read more

I went there for lunch today. It was my first time and since it was my first time, I kept my order simple. I ordered the beef gyro as a test. If they mess this up, they shouldn't be in business. I was pleasantly surprised by my meal. Not only was it delicious but it was not very traditional. I was expecting lettuce, tomatoes, onion and white sauce but in its place was french fries. The fries added a nice texture to a sandwich whereas the meat was nice and juicy. While I was waiting for my order, the lady behind the counter offered me a sample of grape leaves. In general, not a fan of stuffed grape leaves. I always complained that it was too lemony and the rice mushy but their grape leaves was fantastic. The lemon taste was toned down and the grape leave had a nice subtle nutty aftertaste from the olive oil. I live in the next town but very surprised I never heard of this place before and it has been opened for a year. I would recommend this place and come back again. read more

Street parking can be a pain as there are multiple businesses/restaurants in the area. There is a parking lot near by. PLEASE ABIDED TO THE PARKING RULES. Ordered a Greek salad with a gyro. The gyro amounted to just the sliced meat added to the salad not the sandwich. While I ordered the smaller salad it was quite small had no olives a scant amount of the other ingredients the make up a Greek salad, basically lettuce with some sliced meat and a packet of Ken's Greek dressing on the side. All this for $15 and change with added service charge fee included for ordering online. I know it's not easy being in the food business but this was very poor value when considering quality and quantity. They need to step up their game if they are going to make it as a new take out alternative in Denville. read more

We just had ice cream and a chicken sandwich here. It was really good, but I have to say the service and people were so, so kind. It wasn't busy and the woman (who I believe is also an owner) made sure to play the boardwalk where game with my kids and gave them a ring pop (even when we didn't win!). Greece lighting is great if you are looking for great Greek. First off the food. I got the chicken gyro with fries and when I say it is good it is amazing. The gyro was the best that I have ever had. The service was a little slow but there was only one person. Now the ambiance was horrible. It is themed to a boardwalk and that is because doo wop eats shares the building with Greece lighting because they have the same owner. If you are going to do that make it have a different room for each. Overall great lunch stop but could use a theming upgrade read more

Conveniently located on a side street in Denville, NJ this storefront restaurant ( actually 2 restaurants in one ) really delivers a satisfying one-two punch. This review is for the Greece Lightning portion of the restaurant. The dining area is spacious and very clean. The people working behind the counter were cheerful and very helpful with explaining the different items on the menu. We decided to go with the Jumbo Gyro's, one chicken and one lamb. These are not your typical Gyros as they come with all the typical toppings .. plus they have French fries added to the mix along with a special sauce that make these Gyros a bit different and even more delicious. All the ingredients were fresh and the meats were juicy, well seasoned and done to perfection. I can't say enough about how good these Gyros were. They also have a second restaurant in the same space that offers NJ boardwalk type food and that menu looked equally amazing. I'm told the burgers are a must try. The owner stopped by the table to see how everything was and he could not have been nicer. Happy to chat about the food, menu and anything else you may ask about. Overall a very satisfying experience and will be going back ( often ) to check out the other offerings at this very cool new restaurant. read more

We were looking forward to trying Greece lightning and unfortunately we were extremely disappointed. The staff were very nice and friendly but that's where it ended. We were the only ones in the restaurant and it took so long to get the food. There was only one pickup order in front of us. I had a Greek salad with chicken and it was absolutely awful. The chicken was fatty, grisly dark meat and the dressing was terrible. My boyfriend got a beef pita bowl and it was just terrible. We didn't understand what it was- it had French fries in the bowl and very little beef. We also had the hummus which was Ok. It was very coarse and thick- nothing wrong with it, just not to our taste. I asked for a cup with ice and she said they are working on it but they don't have any ice. How can a restaurant not have ice??? We also asked if they had falafel and they didn't have it either. The restaurant was clean and we really wanted to like it and we hope they do improve but for right now it was pretty bad overall and I don't think we will return unless they make some big improvements. It was also pretty expensive for what you get. I do hope they get it together somehow and work out the negatives or I don't think this restaurant will last very long. read more

Absolutely DELICIOUS gyros. My husband and I order from here now once a week when we work late and it never disappoints. The chicken is juicy and well Seasoned, the beef is actual hunks of beef and not slivers of hat other diners call "gyro meat". The sauce is delicious and a perfect complement to the gyro. The hummus is little to be desired as it lacks flavor, but overall everything else is INCREDIBLY DELICIOUS!! Highly recommend. read more
