Okay, as a disclaimer: I love Korean food. I've had it in various cities for years and really liked it. For the past few years, I've been vegetarian and had no problem getting vegetarian food at Korean places. So I've still enjoyed the cuisine anywhere I went. I was craving some Korean food and came across this place, saw the reviews and decided to venture there myself. I work near the Art Institute so it was kind of a trek for a lunch break, but I figured "what the heck, it's a nice day, I get to go for a walk, and good food will await me." I eat a lot of alternative and foreign food, and have found that many places with great dishes are total holes in the wall. So I was not remotely turned off by the modest setting. BUT the food did turn me off. I got the tofu jap chae and regretted it. The service was pretty decent. Within five minutes, I got my order and was excited to dig in. It looked appetizing, but I didn't enjoy it and here's why: I first dug into the salad which was in some sort of lime-green sauce. I at first thought it was kind of good. But the aftertaste was that of spoiled milk. So I refused to eat any more. I then went for the noodles. The taste itself was fine but the noodles were so damn oily that my stomach felt weird and I just felt disgusting like I was just consuming oil, and probably among the worst and cheapest oils with god know's how many trans fats. I've never had a Korean dish before that seemed so unhealthy. Ugh. But I was hungry and persisted for a while. I was also disappointed that the vegetables pretty much sucked. What you see in the picture I posted is pretty much all I got. The tofu was soft and okay. The vegetables were tiny shreds and sparse. So I was basically left with this heaping portion of oily noodles. I couldn't even finish. I felt like I wasted my money and was very disappointed. That being said, I was astounded by the good reviews. Maybe I just picked the one grossly oily, not-remotely-diverse item on the menu. In retrospect, I thought I should have gone with the bi bim bap, which I've always enjoyed at any Korean place I've been to. Or the pho, which I was eyeing. But I decided to try something different and it backfired. Maybe... MAYBE I'll go back sometime if I'm in the area and craving bi bim bap. But as for the jap chae, I'd steer clear. Honestly, there was nothing distinctly Korean about it at all and looked and tasted like something from an American-Chinese place like Panda Express and the like. It didn't come CLOSE to any other Korean place I've had. I understand it's the Loop and fast food but, like I said, it was like cheap, Americanized Chinese food with the word "Korean" slapped on it. A total hidden place that's located in the basement of an office building. No frills type of place that offers authentic Korean eats! Upon my first visit I was feeling a little bit of a variety so I tried the kimchi soup, bibimbap, and pho (both the meatball and steak). I definitely would stick to Korean when coming here; although they offer Pho, the flavors didn't seem as authentic as typical Pho places. The pho broth was flavorful but it was the meat that threw me off... Back to the stars here; focus on that spicy, tangy, and full of meat and veggies Kim chi soup! This soup will compete with the top soups of there as it has just the right amount of spice, enough ingredients to make it filling, and perfect on a colder day! The young woman taking my order was pleasant and smiles and made a suggestion that saved me money. So very nice! The food court itself is clean...that's about all i can say. The design made me feel a little claustrophobic. But fine. The pho did not have the flavors I'm used to, but wasn't awful. The combination was a little weak. For $10 i don't expect a lot, but got less. I would much rather spend a few more dollars and have a noticeable amount of protein included. So, bottom line is it's not the worst, just nothing special. The pho here was pretty good. The lime they gave was really juicy, which I appreciated because I hate when I get a stupid dry, unsqueezable lime. I got the combination and there were no rare beef slices in that one, so I'd probably want a pho with more rare beef next time. That being said, soup and noodles were pretty good. Trying to understand how yelpers are giving this place a 5 star rating? You must have a palate of a goat. The pho is nothing to rave about. No sense of depth, flavor or element. You can smell the spices but it's not bold enough to taste. Therefore the flavor comes out extremely bland, fishy and salty. Fishy because they use fish sauce in the broth so you end up tasting mostly fish sauce broth. I was extremely unimpressed and would love to give them another shot, there's obviously lots of work needed in the broth. Owners, take notes. While munching on a granny smith apple this morning, I reminded myself that Green Apple had been in my bookmarks for some months now. This wintry weather seemed like the perfect time to indulge in a steaming bowl of pho. Green Apple is definitely a spot that you'd only know about if you worked in the building or someone told you about it (or in this case, Yelp). It's located on the second floor of a modest office building food court. First of all, I'm far from knowledgeable about pho and if you told me a few months ago that I'd even be entertaining the thought of eating pho from a food court (:::shudders:::), I'd have probably laughed in your face. Still, I've learned to not judge a book by its cover when if comes to food. And GA is in the same food court at Olive Mediterranean Grill (which I've also tried and found to be more than decent) so I figured it couldn't hurt to give it a shot. I trudged over there in the sleet and slush hoping to be rewarded for my perseverance and I was pleasantly surprised. The order taker was very friendly and there were several options of pho from which to choose, as well as some Korean items like bibimbap and bulgogi. I settled on the chicken pho with tofu and vegetables and my order was quickly ready, with the noodles and accompaniments (cilantro, jalapeno, bean sprouts and lime) packaged separately. Again, I'm by no means an expert on pho, so I'll just review this on its own merits and not compare it to other pho I've had (which admittedly hasn't been much) and say that it was pretty delicious. The chicken was all white meat, and very tender, and the vegetables (broccoli, cauliflower, carrots and mushrooms) were still a bit crisp. The broth (which stayed hot as f*ck for almost 40 minutes) had deep, rich flavor. The huge bowl of soup and all the fixin's set me back just under $10 and I feel very satisfied. And I'm always happy to pay $10 or less for lunch because it doesn't happen very often. If this is legit pho, then I'm down. Even if it's not legit pho, I'm still down. 3.5 stars. read more

This little underground area is the perfect spot to start expanding the much needed authentic Asian restaurants needed in the loop. Kick that Dunkin Donuts out (come on Chicago, there's one every 3 feet) and have more little Asian food court places like this. I ordered the kimchi stew and it was satisfying but to be honest I was really turned off by the price. It's your standard kimchi stew with just a few strips of pork served with a little bowl of rice. The price was about $11. I think it should come with at least one banchan. Although expensive, the flavor was spot on and I'd be lying if I said that I wouldn't be back. I was hesitant to get the pho because of some of the other reviews said it lacked any flavor but walking down the stairs, you don't smell coffee from the Dunkin' right next to it, you smell pho broth and the accompanying garnishes. The name of the restaurant is confusing, the food court is dingy, and there are better Vietnamese and Korean restaurants in Chicago, certainly. But for the money, this is easily one of the best lunch options in the Loop. I usually get the vegetarian pho--maybe they're stingier with the meat phos, but the veggie one always has tons of vegetables and the noodles are cooked perfectly. (FYI, as far as I'm concerned, the sriracha and hoisin are NOT optional.) On the Korean side, I love the soybean stew, which is wonderfully spicy. On warm days the best option is bibimbap, which makes up for the lack of a hot stone bowl with a huge variety of vegetables. Overall the portions are very generous for the price. (Note that Green Apple is on the second floor of the food court. Don't confuse it with the Korean/Thai place on the first floor--it's not nearly as good!) read more

If you're in the Loop and craving some Korean food, your choices are pretty limited; you have Korean Express, Square Bowl, and Green Apple. After having Green Apple on my list for months, I finally gave it a shot today with a friend who probably loves Korean food more than I do. The food court that it's located in won't win any awards for design or cleanliness, but it gets the job done. So does Green Apple. I ordered the Bimbimbap with brown rice (yes, they do have brown rice here!) and my friend ordered the Mul Nangmyun. The portion size for the bibimbap was definitely smaller (by over half) compared to Korean Express, but it definitely tasted better and fresher. They overfried the egg, resulting in a hard-boiled like yolk, but everything else was better than I expected. I consider that a win. I also tried some of my friend's nangmyun, and it was definitely refreshing. Not the most flavorful of broths, but they give you a nice side of ggakdoogi which was also pretty decent. All in all, when you're looking for Korean in the Loop, you don't go wrong with this place. I'm looking forward to trying the Pho and Korean jigaes (stews) as the cold weather approaches. read more

Holy Smoke!!! A legit Pho place in the loop! Thank you Yelp for assuring me this place exists and helping me find it. It's behind the McD's, in the center of a building, in a food court, upstairs. Funnily enough, it's ON the Chicago Pedway system, that pretty much no one knows about either! This Pho tastes straight from Argyle. I got the My Pho with beef and meatballs. It's a large bowl fresh rice noodles and onions. The meatballs were awesome. I loaded my pho bowl up with fresh cilantro and sprouts, hot sauce, and a soy based sweet sauce. I've had both Korean menu items and various pho flavors. My favorites are seafood combo pho with generous helping of noodles, seafood and hearty soup. My Korean cravings are satisfied with kimchi stew, miso stew with tofu. Bibimbop is ok but I prefer the spicy hearty soups. As many have mentioned, this place has multiple names and is located in a food court that reeks of fast food and depressing times. If you can overlook these things, then you will be able to get pho in the Loop, which is nearly impossible. As I'm not a pho expert, I can't speak to whether or not this is authentic. HOWEVER, I always leave full and in want of a nap rather than returning to work. The staff is so nice! They have mango smoothies! The bibimbap is on par with it being a food court, but not a shady one! So, just go here, try it out, you will definitely enjoy it, even if your clothes smell like pho/Popeye's/McDonald's/orange chicken afterwards. What's the alternative? Getting the food carryout so that you can enjoy your pho, jap chae, bibimbap and smoothie on the go. So try ti out! They also have a FroYo machine, which I am going to check out when it gets warmer. When my friend mentioned a place in the loop where I could get my Korean food fix, I was thrilled. I love Korean food and if I'm not making it myself, the only times I could have it are the weekends (I rarely go get it on the weeknights since I don't want to battle traffic going to the north side of Chicago where the majority of Korean restaurants are). I was REALLY skeptical that this place would be any good. First of all, it's named "Green Apple Grill & More". huh? Secondly, it serves yogurt smoothies, korean and vietnamese food, and no apples. Thirdly, it's in a food court with Popeyes Chicken. But fear not, their pho is really good. The emloyees even bring your food to you. Korean-run Green Apple serves both Korean and Vietnamese food. Of course, I came here for pho as part of my quest to eat pho in all 50 states. The day my friend Amanda and I came, we were suffering in the 20 degree weather. It wasn't until we arrived that I realized this was actually a food court location, and not a sit down restaurant. But whatever, I was seriously just happy to thaw out. In addition to standard Korean foods like bibimbap, bulgogi, and japchae, Green Apple offers 10 types of pho. I ordered Pho Tai, and Amanda ordered Pho Vegetable, at $7.45 a bowl. The food came out fast, within five minutes. The pho came in huge bowls, in fact, bowls that were too big for the serving. It looked kind of strange. The garnishes came in individual styrofoam containers. The first thing that popped out at me was that there was no basil for the pho. They put cilantro with the garnishes instead. This was the strangest thing; I've never seen that before. There's always basil for pho. Everything else was pretty standard. The broth flavor was pretty good- not too salty, not oily, flavorful. At the same time, there wasn't anything special about it. The noodles were great, and the meat tasted good, but I thought it strange that the meat was already cooked through when I got the pho. It was never any degree of pink, and as we all know, tai is rare steak that is added to the pho at the last second so it can cook in the broth. So, that was a bit disappointing. Amanda's Pho Vegetable came with tofu, broccoli, mushrooms, and carrots. She'd also ordered a side of kimchee, which was just a dollar. She said the pho was good- the broth didn't taste meaty to her, which complemented the vegetables. I had to stare at her for a second because she started mixing the kimchee with her pho- "Is that weird?" she asked. But hey, she said it tasted good together, so who am I to judge? I was still craving Korean food, and ended up ordering bulgogi to go for my dinner. That dish was a pretty good choice, though. It came in your usual styrofoam container divided into three, with two compartments much smaller than the other. The largest compartment held the bulgogi, so it was a generous portion. I wished that they'd given me more rice though, since they only gave enough to fill one of the small compartments, and the other held a bit of salad. I had to keep in mind that Green Apple is predominantly Korean, and see that as the main reason for any discrepancies. At the same time, I guess I have to give them credit for giving me the feeling of a full pho restaurant experience - because when I got back to the hotel, I realized that my clothes definitely smelled of pho, haha. Anyway, we went to Green Apple because it has a four-star rating here on Yelp, making it the best rated pho location nearby. So even though I'm not their biggest fan, they still have plenty of others. Next time I go to Chicago, I will probably not return. Instead, I'd like to check out Banh Mi Express, also in the Loop. I'm generally a fan of eating Korean Food served from dive locations. Why? Because it just feels more authentic to me that way. The Green Apple is just such a place. Their modern looking to-go counter is tucked away on the second floor of a food court that looks like my grandma's kitchen. They serve authentic Korean dishes at a fair price, mostly under $10. The beef bibimbap was delicious. Next time I'll try the cold glass noodles for a refreshing summer lunch and in the winter I'll be back for some hearty kimchi and pork stew. My only complaint is that the meal didn't come with any banchan (small pickled veggie side dishes). read more
