Service a bit slow and needs more education on opening champagne, pouring wine and charging corkage after giving the waiter and manager some of the wine. He'd open the bottle but didn't pour any which is okay but usually the corkage is for the service besides opening the bottle. We paid $80 for 4 bottles corkage fees. Love this place. So on my visit this last year I brought a local who had never heard of it. She loved it. We were wrapping up a long day at Legoland and since we were staying at the Legoland California Hotel we were looking at the menus online for the various restaurants in the hotels in Legoland. Looking at the high prices they were asking for what could very well be so-so quality dishes, I started having flash backs of the nearby Windmill food hall we ate at the evening before with just okay food in the midst of all the noise and chaos of kids running around. It was just like the scene in the movie Raising Arizona when Glen and Dot show up to Hi and Edwina's trailer with their rug rats and they're just tearing the place up. Anyway, the previous evening we were thinking about the Green Dragon Tavern for dinner but since I was driving when the suggestion was made, I thought a "tavern" atmosphere was going to be like a sports bar and might be too loud and not toddler friendly so I told my wife I'd pass on it but on this day, I had a chance to look at some pictures of the inside of the Green Dragon Tavern and it was a far cry from what I had in my mind the day before. Since it was a Saturday evening and I didn't know what things were like at that restaurant on a weekend evening so I decided not to take a chance and made a reservation through Google/Opentable. We ordered the Connecticut lobster roll, the grilled shrimp taco, Wagyu beef slider, mussels, sweet potato fries, a cup of clam chowder, the house salad and chocolate lava cake for dessert. EVERYTHING we ordered was delicious! I was actually amazed at how much we got for the price especially with the grilled shrimp tacos because the day before we had a pollo asada quesadilla from the food hall across the street for $16 which was pretty mediocre all the while the shrimp tacos here at Green Dragon Tavern were stuffed with shrimp and just massive! The dining experience here capped our Carlsbad/Legoland trip off on such a positive note. I told our friends who were going to come to Legoland the next weekend to stop by the Green Dragon Tavern for dinner instead of going anywhere else and I'm telling the same thing to anyone who's reading this review to do likewise. read more

Best kept secret in dining! Some of the most sumptuous meals served are right there in Carlsbad. Lunch today was the incredible salmon burger with homemade potato chips. Dessert ...bread pudding so light as to be angel wings! The sauce was a hint of maple and creme fraiche.... Vanilla ice cream as well. My birthday friend ordered turkey pot pie...(I personally hate pot pie). I took a spoonful to test...beautifully crusted, divine to taste! I now have one I could eat and rave uts perfection!! This review is for their event space, since I have not dined in the restaurant. I have been to this location several times for different events. It's always well appointed and the staff is very helpful and nice. They have had set up with the water station that iced tea and other items available self serve. The events I've gone to have had a bar with several choices of beer, wine and soft drinks. The food I've had on these occasions has been very good small, upscale, flavorful bites. The items have definitely made want to return for a full meal and the menu is very approachable. The only thing that could use improvement is that some of the trays ended up empty on all occasions and were not replaced right away. Otherwise everything was very good. read more

We came here for a weekend dinner. We made a reservation just in case but it wasn't super busy, so we could have walked in. Since we got here a little later in the day, we didn't get to check out the museum. There are some exhibits, paintings and information in the dining hall itself. I think I expected this to be more museum like, but the dining space was modern, neither a tavern, nor a museum. The food was ok. We got a red wine and a cucumber based cocktail, the sesame calamari for an appetizer and the jambalaya and Connecticut lobster roll for entrees. The jambalaya was very good. The calamari was interesting - not too fried and accompanied by tempura veggies. The veggies were honestly more tasty than the calamari. The lobster roll was not good. The lobster was dry and pretty bland by itself. The Connecticut version was warm. The bread seemed too thick and no amount of lemon or butter seemed to add any flavor. We paid a pretty penny for everything and the food was just average, so this wasn't a great culinary experience. Our server was nice. It's odd to find a historic restaurant in the city of Carlsbad, but yet one exists and not only a restaurant but a museum and that would be the green dragon. We had lunch today with some friends, and they were truly blown away by not only the food and the atmosphere, but the history of our country that exists in this restaurant. My wife is a proud member of DAR and the Mayflower Society so she loves this place. For me it's all about the turkey pot pie, which is as big as a Thanksgiving turkey. My friend said chicken sandwiches fish sandwich. My wife had an everything you can put on a bun sandwich with great crinkle cut Fries. We decided on lunch here today since we were going to the Premium Outlets nearby. Checked Yelp for reviews which seemed to be mixed. The outside of the building is colonial and quite stately. Our server, Delaney, was a wealth of information regarding the restaurant and museum (inside same building). We shared the Brussels sprouts, cooked to perfection and large portion. My chicken salad wrap was delicious, had cranberries for an extra flavor boost, yum! House made chips were crispy and quite good. The perfect outing if you like history and Nee England style food. I got the Connecticut Lobster Roll which is supposed to be the #1 item on the menu. It did not disappoint. All of the entree portions are large. We had the Chowder Fries - think of fries drenched in Nee England Clam Chowder soup. Very rich and filling. The size was smaller than I expected but for 3 of us it was more than enough. The Calamari appetizer is bigger. The rings are fried crispy with a mix of fried jalapeños. Careful of you don't like spicy food. For the other entrees we had the Mac & Cheese and the Tavern Burget. The Mac & Cheese is a large potion of rich homemade sauce with a Smokey flavor from the bacon. The burger was was large and juicy. Big enough that you might need a fork and knife to eat it. The location has a very large restaurant and ballrooms for events. Ample parking out front and a patio that was empty on a weekday. Our waiter was busy covering the tables. It was not a lot of staff and we had to request help a couple times. Everything ordered came out just right. The museum is perfect for a history buff. Especially American history. Paul was the perfect host from arrival to his break. Purchased a Costco synergy gift card for $70 and received 2 $50 gc. I never leave a review while dining but I'm doing this in hopes of allowing my stomach to stretch so I can finish my lobster roll. Located across from the flower field, Green Dragon sits in a rustic brick 2 story building. I ordered the Flower fields cocktail (gin based), bowl of the England chowder and Connecticut lobster roll with garlic fries instead of chips. Food is beyond amazing. The chowder is buttery and flavorful. The garlic fries are delicious and tossed in flour to give them the perfect crunch while maintaining the interior softness. The coleslaw is perfectly seasoned, just the right amount of juice and not too much onions. The music is amazing. Seriously this place is perfect for a reception or any gathering. Not one complaint except I wish I had some soup to dip my bread. The brioche bread is bigger than normal size but I imagine it's because they use the same bun for multiple items. I visited this restaurant with my family on Christmas Eve and they had a great menu and good service. Our host and servers were very speedy and polite, and we were able to get our full meal in during a very quickly 1.25 hour turnaround before our later plans. The inside ambiance is very cozy and colonial, with dimmer lighting and old fashioned tables. They had an extended Christmas special menu which I believe included the potato crusted cod I ordered and a prime rib which two family members shared. We also ordered the calamari appetizer which was well fried and had a nice sauce, if a little salty. The baby beet salad was fresh and chowder bowl was also good but probably could have been a little warmer. The chicken parm was tasty. We also ordered a glass of Chardonnay and a glass of Riesling, and the server even gave us an extra glass of Chardonnay they had. I never knew this place existed until last year when a school I work for held an event there. It had an air of familiarity to me, reminded me of places I've lived in the past on the east coast. The building looks like it belongs in New England or Virginia. Bricks and paned windows. The inside houses a small museum featuring artifacts from the Mayflower through the revolution (I think) and a nice restaurant. I wish the museum had labels under each photo. Not everyone is familiar with what the American forefathers looked like. The menu in the restaurant is huge. These something for everyone. This time I had the pot pie. Food was excellent and fast! I really enjoyed the mixed grill seafood--the seasoning and grilled top of the salmon was fabulous and it was cooked just right! The shrimp was really tasty with the beurre blanc sauce as well, which I used on top of my asparagus and potatoes. My husband enjoyed his beef Bourguignon -- rich creamy thick brown mushroom like sauce came with chunks of beef and wide chewy noodles. My daughter's kids meal mac cheese was also very good, and came with a side of mashed potatoes. We liked the beet salad, even though the dressing was too heavy. It had both yellow and red beets with apples, feta, toasted almond silvers, spring mix, and a toasted slice of parmesean bead. The chocolate lava cake was not what we expected; it was chocolate bundt cake with hot chocolate syrup on top, served with side of vanilla ice cream and a few slices of strawberries with whipped cream. It was fine but was not a brownie like cake that we know as "lava" cake. Service was fast--we were done eating in about an hour 15 minutes on a Friday night. The restaurant takes reservations on open table (yeah!), has both a quieter side and a lively side with the bar (where we sat), and is located inside a museum. The paper place mats are different with historical knowledge and facts. It has plenty of parking and is located right off the 5 freeway exit at Palomar Road (same one as if you were going to Costco). I spoke to the manager Alex to let him know how impressed I was with the food, service, and atmosphere. He was very friendly, nice, and professional. He shared with me the event space (ballroom for up to 200 people), the various discounts offered (i.e., military), and the specials such as Thanksgiving buffet. First and foremost I didn't even know this beautiful resturant/event center/museum was less than 7 minutes from my home! My oldest Daughter was just engaged and I wanted to host a special dinner for our families to celebrate. I reached out to the Green Dragon Tavern & Museum and talked to the events coordinator, I'm sorry to have forgotten his name, but he was professional and super friendly. He suggested the room (they have many to choose from) that would accommodate our 20 guests and gave me suggestions on what to do. He invited us to come tour the facilities prior to our party and we did not only were we accommodated but they stayed and walked us through how we wanted it set up and what we would need that day. We were allowed to come in just a bit early to set up and our waiter introduced himself to us and the other staff member that was taking care of us. We set up our order for starters and they set up a water station as well so we could serve ourselves if needed. All of the food was served quickly, was absolutely delicious and correct! Every detail was handled perfectly, coffee service was perfect, cocktails were cold and refreshing, and once again the service was impeccable! When I look back on our photos I remember how much fun we had, the food being amazing and the service being seamless! I have been meaning to try Green Dragon Tavern for literally YEARS, having driven past it on the freeway several times a week and thinking it looked cool but never actually getting around to it. Finally the opportunity presented itself this past week when I attended a friend's birthday dinner there. I arrived a few minutes late to the reservation so sadly I didn't get to enjoy the whole museum experience but there are paintings and pictures everywhere and down the hall to the restrooms so I did get to see a bit. When I joined up with our party they had already settled in and had drinks, and our server (his name is escaping me - perhaps Todd?) arrived straight away to take my drink order and put in some appetizers for us. We ordered the Brussels sprouts and sweet potato waffle fries to share, both of which were delicious. For my main I chose the hangar steak, which I was especially looking forward to because I'd had a super lackluster steak dinner at a different restaurant the week prior and still hadn't fulfilled that craving, so I was hoping for a better outcome. Thankfully my steak arrived cooked to the temperature I had asked for (unlike the other restaurant), the potato was crispy on the outside and fluffy inside, the asparagus was cooked to al dente perfection and there was a pile of fried onions on top of everything which added the perfect amount of flavor and crunch. Our server consistently checked in with us and kept the drinks coming, even bringing a special pour of some kind of dark beer for the birthday girl which was a very nice gesture, and the bussers were efficient and kept our table clear so it didn't get too cluttered as we finished plates. The birthday girl ordered a dessert to share with the table which I opted not to try so I can't speak on whether it was good or not, but the plate was pretty much licked clean before it got whisked away so I assume it was well enjoyed. When we finally finished dining it was closing time so I didn't get a chance to mosey around but I definitely plan on doing so on my next visit, hopefully sooner than later because it's a pretty awesome building and I would love to explore and enjoy the museum to its full potential. read more
