My husband and I came in from out of town to spend the weekend in hidden valley for my birthday. We chose this restaurant for dinner based off the elegant, refined menu choices advertised online. The atmosphere and service is the reason this review is only getting one star. The food was honestly disgusting. We shared the mushroom confit pot and the asparagus and lobster soup. There wasn't a single piece of lobster and the cream base tasted sour. The mushrooms were cold and tasted like they were poured into a bowl from a jar at the grocery store. The pesto on the toast was BLACK. The neighboring table ordered the same thing and they also found the appetizer to be horrid. For our main dish, I ordered the seafood pasta and he ordered the duck. The pasta noodles were overdone, the shrimp were 2cm in size, and I had to spit my 3cm scallop into a napkin because it was hard to chew and had an awful fish flavor to it. You would probably like this dish if you like to eat a bowl of heavy cream! My husband ordered the duck which he said was okay but the potatoes served tasted unwashed, granular, and rotten. The pictures listed online is such false advertisement, along with the fact that they do not serve alcohol and are BYOB. There is no way that the ingredients they listed under each dish were used. We have never, in our lives, had food so bad that we had to make an excuse to leave the restaurant so we didn't have to finish our meals. We went to another restaurant after to celebrate my birthday so we could have more than three bites in total out of everything we ate that cost $100. We didn't have the heart to say anything because our waitress was so nice, but I highly recommend not eating here. read more

Stopped here last week when on a little leaf viewing.... This place is AWESOME! Old play house and restaurant.... Nostalgic...Place is huge and beautiful inside.... Have a little creek in the back that you can watch while eating your dinner... We had the filet.... The plate was beautiful! They do a great job with presentation..... Taste... It was very good, but not excellent.... Ordered medium but steaks were both overdone... But they were still juicy and still good..... Had dessert as well... The flourless cake... which i thought would be a lava cake... But although again beautifully presented, was just ok... It was more fudge than cake. I will definitely be back to this place for sure! It's great! Just hoping the taste of the food gets a little better... Almost a five, though. read more

I do not know where to begin. My husband & I married at the Green Gables in May 2023. I have been wanting to write Green Gables & their staff a review since the day after my wedding and I am speechless. It is so hard for me to put into words how much of a wonderful day we had. As anyone planning a wedding knows, there is a lot of hard work and personalization to put into it. Teresa and her staff really put the "cherry on top" of all of my ideas and wishes. I am a tourist to Jennerstown, we are from LV area. Every second I spend at Green Gables, I feel I am home with my family. Highly recommend Green Gables to anyone that wants a secluded, unplugged time whether you are looking for a romantic get away or a family excursion. Green Gables is a great place to settle for a few nights. The views are beautiful inside the restaurant, the outdoor surroundings, even the accommodations. I have been to Green Gables several times and I have not been disappointed once. I will be headed back again in a few weeks and I know I am going to have the "welcome home" I always experience. read more

Decided to make a road trip before the colder weather arrived and been wanting to visit this restaurant. Ordered the jumbo lump crab cake with Granny Smith slaw for a starter...wow !!!! Entree we tried was the Braised Beef Short Rib & Scallops...not fans of the crispy green beans on top (and I love green beans)...but everything else was cooked to perfection. The waitress recommended the Lemon Curd Mousse for dessert...would have been enough for three or four people...thinking of trying the peach cobbler during next visit. We visited for the first time very recently. The location is outstanding. The building itself is an interesting mix. The dining room overlooks a stream and woods so the overall feel is really nice. The architecture / decor is unique, it kind of harkens back to the 60s and 70s log cabin. The menu was limited but very imaginative and we spent some time picking items, everything on the menu looked good. We were a little disappointed in the execution, some of the dishes seemed bland even though they had some interesting ingredients. The flavor combinations just didn't seem to work. That said we definitely want to go back and try again. At the moment the restaurant doesn't have a liquor license so is BYOB. read more

They must have a master pastry chef, who conjures up creations like chocolate cake stuffed with chocolate cheesecake, covered in ganache with a peanut butter crème anglaise and garnished with peanut bacon brittle. Worst holiday buffet EVER. We go out for three holidays every year...Easter, Mothers Day, and Thanksgiving...and have been for years. We've been to many holiday buffets and this was by far the worst. The sweet potatos were burned and stone cold, the white potatos were bland and over cooked, the veggies were cooked to mush and floating in liquid, the chicken was too dry to eat, the ham was ok for presliced boneless ham. The only thing on the carving station was overcooked lamb. That was all there was other than a couple of salads. The desserts were mediocre...frozen coconut cream pie, dry chocolate bundts, ok plain cheesecake (probably from Sam's Club), and some bizarre mix of mini marshmallows and chocolate pudding. There was one cake with lemon cream that was pretty good. This is the only holiday buffet I ever left hungry. $39 a person and it truly sucked. We should have gone to Dennys or LITERALLY ANYWHERE ELSE. read more

My husband and I wanted to celebrate our 25th wedding anniversary in a quiet way but still have a meaningful experience. This restaurant fit the bill. We made reservations for 6:00 pm to accommodate leisurely dining before we enjoyed an 8:00 pm performance at the adjoining Mountain Playhouse. From the moment we walked through the door, it was clear we were in for an unusual experience. The decor is fascinating. Everywhere you look there is something interesting. I describe it as a fusion of rustic-gothic-cottage. Weird sounding, I know, but here it works. We were seated by a pleasant hostess and presented a menu filled with pages of craft beer selections, wine and of course, the food offerings. I have never seen so many craft beer selections in a restaurant. I walked in with a preconceived notion of ordering a glass of wine. They also had an entire menu dedicated to wine by the bottle. But the beer was more enticing. We spent a lot of time deciding on which to choose. The food was equally unusual to the decor in the combination of styles. Fresh local foods, some of which were grown right on the grounds, paired with influences from around the globe. Not just French and Italian, but you could see Middle Eastern, German, Asian and Latin influences throughout the menu. My husband selected the oyster stew as a starter and the Pennsylvania surf and turf as his entree (venison and wall-eye). He loved the entree but the addition of sweet potatoes to the oyster stew was odd to him at first. He was remembering his mothers version when he ordered it, but said that it grew on him as he ate his way through the bowl. The venison was a chop with a bone in it, and he was expecting a filet, but he said the favors were outstanding . I ordered the blueberry Brie salad as a starter and the grass fed beef filet as an entree. The salad came piled high with home grown red tipped leaf lettuce dressed in a light honey balsamic. Candied pecans, red onions and blueberries were mixed in and a slab of grilled Brie completed the dish. Delicious and light! My filet was perfectly cooked and was a generous portion. It sat atop a bed of mushroom pasta and blue cheese chunks. I was in heaven! Since my husband can never pass up dessert, we agreed to view the dessert menu. He chose the creme brûlée of the day, which was blackberry. I shared it with him and it was the perfect ending to a great meal. An unusual find in a beautiful setting with above average food and an efficient wait staff. We will definitely go back for more. read more

I cannot say enough wonderful things about my wedding at Green Gables. We had multiple guests tell us that it was the most beautiful and unique venue that they had been to. Teresa was fantastic to work with throughout the entire process. She was very prompt, timely, and incredibly efficient. She was always quick to respond to me with any questions or changes I had, especially the weeks leading up to my wedding. The staff was wonderful and very accommodating regarding everything we wanted to have at the wedding - we didn't get a single "no, we can't/won't do that" for any of our little details for the day (and between a ceremony champagne table, cocktail live music, cigar bar on the patio, and sparkler exit, we had a lot of little additional details for the day). The day of the wedding went perfectly. Teresa kept us calm in the presence of a bad weather forecast (that luckily turned around) and reassured us that everything could still be done and we had a plan B and plan C for locations within the venue. She also kept great communication throughout the day, checking in with me and my bridal party and keeping everything running exactly on time. All of the staff did a beautiful job with decorations and layout of the venue, and guests told me how polite and friendly all of the staff was. The food was so delicious (which we had already known from coming here in the past for lunches and dinners) and guests loved it. We had filet and crab cakes for dinner and it was very good quality food. If you are someone who is a planner, likes things to run on time, and wants to work with someone who keeps you on track for the entire wedding day, I can't recommend Green Gables enough. read more

We stumbled onto the Green Gables Restaurant when I booked a room with their adjacent B&B, Huddleson Court, for the weekend because we needed a place to stay while visiting Falling Water, and while Green Gables was a bit out of the way, it looked cozier than closer options. We didn't even know there was a restaurant or playhouse. We arrived late in the afternoon, checked into our room, and then went back to the restaurant for dinner. Our jaws dropped when we first walked through the door and saw that they had received the Wine Spectator Award of Excellence from Wine Spectator for the last 13 straight years. The dinner was fantastic too. It wasn't until the next morning that we discovered how unique, one might say "magical," Green Gables is. The rooms are all nestled together in court on one end of the property, and we explored the courtyard before wandering up to the restaurant for breakfast. This time, in the daylight, we could see the Mountain Playhouse and Green Gables nestled among gardens on the edge of Stroughton Lake. We had a fabulous, quiet breakfast, came back for an early lunch, and seriously considered taking a day off from work so we could stay one more night just so we could spend the day relaxing around the gardens and lake. We had a chance to meet Teresa, one of the owners, and chatted with her for a good while about the playhouse and it's history. She told us how her father had started the restaurant as a sandwich stand and was so successful after his first year he converted the stand into a restaurant. Over time he extended the restaurant, built the playhouse, dug up the fields to enlarge the lake, and added the rooms and banquet hall. When the first banquet hall burned down, he hired an architect to design a new banquet hall, and like her work so much he married her; that banquet hall is the same one that Green Gables has today. read more

My wife and I were married and had our wedding dinner her 48 years ago . Even now people who attended say it was one of the most beautiful weddings they have ever attended. We come back several times per year to enjoy a play or attend the wine and beer tasting package which includes lodging. We prefer staying in fair oaks {we were the first people to stay in this cabin} because it has two bedrooms, a spacious living room with wood burning fire place, a fully equipped kitchen and a deck off the living room. It is quiet and secluded. The dining experience is one you will never forget. The antique look of the interior will take you back to yesteryear. I'm a very easy going bride, nothing needed to be perfect, but The owner (Theresa) has a very bad attitude!!!!!!!!! She's nice as pie once you book your wedding, but when it comes down to doing things the way you want it's a constant fight!!!! She will also nag you on your wedding day about being on time & wrapping up pictures. She even told me that "I HAD" to go to the restroom before my entrance!! The whole evening she kept bothering me & the DJ!! The Dj was so fed up with her by the end of the night that he said he hopes he "NEVER" has to go back! Her & her team tried telling me where to put the gift table & cake table when I wanted it in a different spot, then we paid for a private party in which she said she couldn't close off the room because the AC units needed to air condition the whole building in which they only have AC in the tuscany room. What idiot only puts AC in one room?!? So she said "I was making a big deal out of nothing" (with her lovely attitude) so she would close the curtains and yet I still saw 2 people come back to be nosey!!! She also yelled at my guests who were kids playing hide & seek. She told them they shouldn't be playing outside that they needed to be up at the tuscany room so they went to play outside by the room, but on the road!!!!! She completely ruined my day!!!!! Green Gables is a lovely gem that's worth trip off the beaten path. I've eaten here multiple times and have always had a lovely experience. The prices for dinner are a little higher than other places around, but are well worth it for a special occasion, and the lunch prices are very reasonable. I had my wedding here 4 years ago, and while I can't speak to how they are currently run, I can say that my experience was all that I could have hoped for (with prices that you can't beat closer to Pittsburgh). On top of the great food and service, the architecture and scenery are well worth the visit. It's one of the prettiest restaurants I've ever visited. read more

The first three times I was here everything was perfect. This time, not so much. The lobster 'nacho's' were not made with fresh lobster, and the balsamic was way overdone. It had potential but never made the mark. The green bean salad also had potential but only had three green beans, way too much feta, and was over dressed. My veal with gnocchi was good, but my husbands risotto was more of a rice cake than risotto. I wish that if a chef can't make risotto that they leave it off the menu. The menu reads like a dream, but it's not being executed. Because I love staying in their rooms and rental houses, I will try eating here again, but I don't give more than one more chance. read more

I have been coming to the Mountain Playhouse to work since 2011, and one of the highlights of spending the summer in Jennerstown is enjoying the food at Green Gables. Chef Susan Kroft is always coming up with great ideas and serving some of the freshest and best ingredients (and I live in NYC, where you can find some of the best!). My favorites new additions this year have been the PEI mussels and the seafood fritters. Their specialty cocktails never disappoint - I enjoyed a blueberry mojito this season! Just attended our niece's wedding at this venue. If you are looking at this venue for a wedding, consider the information below. You may want to choose a venue that meets your expectations with more professional employees. Where does one begin based on the experience, especially realizing how much they paid for the venue. 1. The wedding planner should be fired based on the getup that she was wearing. Stringy hair, tennis shoes, bad personality, and 1970s hippie style dress do not exude confidence. 2. Although the weather was calling for rain, she wouldn't let the bridal party rehearse in the playhouse the night before because she didn't have time and had an appointment. The wedding was ultimately held inside and was clear no rehearsal. When the wedding was moved inside, the gazebo and barrel weren't. So instead of using something picked out by the bride and rental fees paid, the planner chose to use faded, creased, table clothes on a table as the backdrop. 3. The planner had the floral swag upside and then attempted to dismantle it in front of the audience because she needed 2 flowers. 4. The folks from the facility that were passing out programs were arguing when we approached and were dressed like they were ready for an excursion at Wal-Mart. 5. The planner misplaced the throw away bouquet that was tagged in the box. Broke some of the flowers in the head table pieces and didn't even use one of the arrangements made for the cake table. She left it on the bench with other items and bags that she didn't clean up. 6. When I was congratulating the bride, one of the venue folks came up and abruptly interrupted, rolling her eyes and said to the bride time to move along. When I mentioned that it was the bride's day, she even was more rude by saying "that dinner is in 5 minutes" and walked off. 7. Speaking of food: the venue ran out of the piddly reception food in 10 minutes; The waitress serving the food didn't even know the type of dressing on the salad; my 9 yr old son said his kid's chicken fingers sucked (I tried, they did, were like styrofoam and the fries were cold); and, the green beans weren't steamed, were raw. 8. Although the venue is rustic, it isn't an intimate venue for a large wedding. Tables were down the side corridor. Folks couldn't hear or see the wedding party arriving or the toasts. Also, since the dance floor was where the wedding party sat, dancing couldn't occur until after their tables were moved and the DJ couldn't start because of spacing. 9. At 9 pm, when we left, the wedding cake hadn't been cut. 10. When waiting for a soda at the bar, "the assumed owner or manager" was arguing with a support staff about her schedule for the night and ignored me for 2 or 3 minutes until she finally told the lady, "go, if you don't want to work." In conclusion, as a visitor to the area, wasn't impressed. read more

We actually ended up at this restaurant after decided to stay at their rooms in Huddleson Courts for a small night getaway for an anniversary trip. We soon found out that there was a very highly rated restaurant on the property and it seemed like the perfect solution to enjoy one of their excellent meals and to maximize our stay at the beautiful and cozy room. We made reservations for Sunday evening and requested a romantic spot for our celebration dinner. We got a table right by the fireplace : ) As other reviews mention, the wine and beer list are pretty insane. On top of a HUGE amount of selections, the prices are all very fair and a lot of beers can be had for $5 with glasses of wine under $10. Coming from DC - this was great to see! We didn't have any food specifically in mind so we took our time looking over the menu. We decided to share an appetizer (broccoli salad) and then each get an entree. We got the fillet/wild mushroom stroganoff (both fillet and scallops were recommended as crowd favorites) and the shrimp/pork belly and grits and both were incredible! The portions were huge and both dishes were delicious. The meat was local and a lot of the produce was from on site and it made for a wonderful meal. It was a slow night and we also got fig/goat cheese bruschetta and a small glass of wine compliments of the chef. That was a nice perk and something we really enjoyed. We were too stuffed for dessert so we didn't get that but can highly recommend the food. We enjoyed the four dishes we ended up trying and would order them again next time, although I think we'd want to taste what other delicious food is on the menu! The building and atmosphere are beautiful and make for a very unique and romantic setting. The place is very clean and charming and the staff is pretty friendly. For being such an incredible dining experience, we weren't overly impressed with the service - a little awkward. But overall I would still say it was good, as we were constantly checked up on which is always good to know. The food always taste fresh but what I like is that I never felt I was being rushed to eat and get out. The ambiance at this location is perfect. The restaurant is quaint, charming and romantic. We joined 2 other couples for New Years Eve and the consensus is mutual regarding this review. We were immediately greeted at the door by a pleasant hostess who made us feel very welcome. We ordered off the New Years Eve menu and felt that our appetizers and salads left something to be desired. Although they did grill the romaine for the Cesar salad, which was wonderful, the dressing for the salad was extremely overpowering and left a very unpleasant aftertaste on our palates. Our entrees where incredible, however, and the reason I am giving this restaurant 2 stars.. We ordered the flank steak, lamb, pork and filet and we were all very satisfied. Last but not least, our service was far from accommodating. We waited a substantial amount if time before our waitress took our drink order, came back with our drinks, took our food order, served us our 3 courses and came back with our bill. The entire dinner took 2 hours and 45 minutes. I can appreciate not being rushed through a dinner service and feeling that you can take your time to enjoy. My husband and I had our own wedding reception at Green Gables over 40 years ago and loved it then. When our son decided to have a family wedding in PA in order to accomodate family from the PA area (although we all live in other states), we immediately thought of Green Gables. We were so happy that they were able to schedule our event. Overall, we had a absolutely wonderful experience! The help and advice we were given in planning a "long distance" wedding reception was very important to the success of our event. We feel that all the staff who interacted with us were extremely skilled and professional with their responsibilities and all was organized well and went so smoothly due to their expertise. All the wait staff were so helpful and accomodating that night. The atmosphere was wonderful and both the bride and groom were so happy and pleased with the decor and attention to detail. Our cookie table was fabulously done by the staff and looked so elegant! Our food was also delicious and all the options we had were given rave reviews by the guests. Overall, our wedding was just wonderful and can best be described as very classy but comfortable, not stilted at all and just full of personality. We are very grateful to all the Green Gables staff from the wedding planner to the bookkeeper to the banquet staff and chef for a truly memorable and wonderful experience. For three years a friend and I have visited Green Gables for my Birthday lunch and other occasions. We have always enjoyed the restaurant, menu and service. This past recent visit was extremely disappointing, slow service and I doubt we will return. I am limited in menu choices and, since we were the ONLY table, I asked if the chef could just make some eggs and toast. He could not. Then I ordered a Caesar Salad with chicken as the salmon substitute. The salad was the WORST ever and Salad Kits in the markets are superior. I sent it back for the chicken breast to be cut (served whole on top of the salad with no knife, until I asked). Then I asked for additional salad items as the salad romaine was so finely shredded, little croutons, no cheese that I saw, and a small amount of dressing , until I asked again. Supposedly a chef in North Carolina instructs the menu contents and the chef at Green Gables. Management comped the lunch (formerly hosted via phone by a friend in Los Angeles) however the aggravation, time wasted and disappointment are small compensation. This was the worst meal I have ever had! The only reason I would give it one star is because of the beautiful Green Gables Restaurant. We ordered a stuffed chicken meal. On top of a heap of sticky orzo that was glued to my plate were 3 slices of fatty chicken with the skin on. So awful. We had gristle and fat to remove before we could even think of eating. The chicken was stuffed with something orange the texture of curdled milk and had a weird taste. On top of all this were 3 pieces of cherry tomato cut in half. I guess that was supposed to be the vegetable. No vegetable! No salad! And, to top off all this was a circle of chocolate sauce around the plate. How very terrible!! No wonder the beautiful restaurant was empty. The price for the two meals was $51.00. We had a BOGO offer so we paid around $27.00, but this was still expensive. My suggestion would be fire the chef and find someone that can cook real food. Charge $10.00 for a meal and the place would be packed again like it was years ago. Terrible just Terrible!!! read more
