We my sister and her husband were visiting from Vermont for the weekend, and we needed to go to Johnstown to deliver a packagein Johnstown. Since we were already in the area, we decided to visit the Flight 93 Memorial. On the way, while on Route 30 we stopped at the Coal Miner's Diner for lunch. We found the restaurant to be charming and the waiter was friendly and very attentive to our needs, although he was brand new at the job. The menu was generally composed of "Comfort Food" all of which were enticing. Given the schedule we decided to keep the meal simple, Two of us decided to try the Mushrooms and Cheese Hamburger with French Fries, one ordered the special of the day, Stuffed Cabbage Soup and the 4th of the party ordered the Bacon Cheese Burger with Onion Rings. We all found the food to be well prepared an cooked not to mention tasty. In addition they offer interesting pastries. The house specialty is Gob Cakes, a soft, cake-like cookies sandwiched together with a creamy frosting filling.They are available in a variety of flavors, including classic chocolate, vanilla, and peanut butter,the Gob Cakes are a must-try. I stopped in not even knowing the name of the establishment. Just needed a spot to unwind and the parking lot was full so I figured it must be at least ok. This place used to feature coal mining artifacts, but sadly the new owner has opted for a more generic look. If you're looking for a historic experience, this is no longer the place. Decor looks like Home Goods, cutesy-country. The fish sandwich and hot turkey sandwich were good. The white pizza was absolutely awful, below school cafeteria quality--avoid it. My husband and I have driven by several times and today we decided to stop in for breakfast with our 1 year old. Our first red flag was the hostess was probably 10 years old... literally. When we sat down we waited a minute or 2 and my husband got up and got a highchair for the baby himself. They were obviously short staffed by the looks on the 2 servers faces. Our Coal Miners Cafe is kind of a local legend. The local commercials that painted this place as the in place to go for a home cooked meal. But also for the challenge meal they have going called Miners Meal Deal. If you can down a two pound burger, a basket of curly fries, a side of slaw, and a gob cake sundae, you get it for free. My parents informed me that this used to be an inn or motel, and it may still have rooms upstairs, but not sure if they are in use. They have a large porch area that appears to be a little under used at the moment. They do have some outdoor seating here, but I feel like they could have more, especially if they were to clear out the side portion of the porch. There is a swing out front that you can sit on, but only if you are short in stature. Parking is a bit tight. There is a small lot out front and one out back. But if they are busy you may end up parking on the grass. Once you are inside you can tell that this used to a place of lodging. You notice what looks like a bar area as soon as you walk in, this is used as the host stand where you wait to be seated. Looking around this lobby type of area you notice all the Pennsylvania memorabilia. Lots of Pittsburgh sports, local sports, and with Jennerstown having a race track, loads of racing stuff. The two things that caught eye while in this area was the very small phone booth with a telephone still in it (not working) and the display case of baseball helmets with the logos from the 80s. The theme kind of moves throughout this place. It feels more like a dining room in a house. The room we were sitting in had tables that you would find in dining rooms from homes. In the corner was a old school radio that my dad recognized right away. Service was a bit spotty while we were here, but we came to find out that there was a large party which took up parking and kitchen time. When we did get service it was by far the best we had. After placing the drink order we basically got our own menus since the hostess forgot to bring them. Once the drinks shown up we were set to order. I already knew what I wanted to order before showing up so mine went a little quicker. I am glad that I ordered an appetizer as the service was really slowed down due to that large party. The kitchen was backed up a bit. I went with the Sampler Basket. If you remember one thing from this review, remember this, order this sampler basket. For the price it is way better than ordering any given item on the appetizer menu alone. When you order the Sampler Basket you get your choice of four of the items on the appetizer menu. See, you get more and you get to try out many things at once. With that I got fried pickles, onion rings, cheese sticks, and mac n cheese bites. Now, if I would have known this beforehand, I would have just went with this for my meal. If you pair it right, you definitely do have meal. This thing was huge, I ended up sharing it with my family. My niece and nephew were definitely on the verge of hangry, so this cam out at just the right time. There was so much on this plate that my whole family as well as me were noshing on it until or entrees showed up. Every single appetizer in that sampler was kind of run of the mill, but satisfying. The cheese sticks were a little odd, not stringy like some, but kind of satisfying. Onion rings were coated perfectly. Fried pickles had the right amount of kick to it and the mac n cheese bites the kids devoured. As for my entrée I went with old reliable, meatloaf. This comes with two sides and a dinner roll. I went with mashed potatoes and broccoli. Gravy over the meatloaf and mashed potatoes. When the food did start trickling out, not everything popped out at once. My plate with the meatloaf and mashed potatoes came out first. My broccoli did not show up until I was about halfway done with my plate. The meatloaf was a huge slice. I swear this was as big as a loaf of bread and thick as two slices of conventional bread. I am not sure what they used as a binder in this meatloaf, but it held together quite nicely. Seasoned enough to not be overpowering. No peppers in it that made me happy, I didn't want to be burping up peppers for the rest of the day. The mashed were mashed, thought maybe they could have been instant. Now, let me speak on the broccoli. When it finally did make it out to me, it was partially burnt. How? How does one do that? I mean it was odd. Like it was left on an open flame. Some pieces were so charred that I could not eat them. As for dessert, of course I got the gob cake. That was breakfast the next day. I could not fit anymore inside me after that massive meal. When I did dive into that gob cake, oh my god, delicious. The icing with the chocolate cake is always a win in my book. Small town feel, seat yourself for brunch was so good! At first we were a little sad because we wanted breakfast food but we ended up ordering a steak sub and the Ruben. Both made really well! The steak sub had really good texas toast and the most perfect cheese pull. They use sirloin steak bites so it's not shaved thin steak. My Ruben was delicious as well. The rye bread was toasted, dressing wasn't overwhelming, well proportioned sandwich. The staff were so nice. Just very hometown. I keep seeing reviews of people saying negative things about lunch and dinner here. However I went in the morning for breakfast. My husband and I went because he grew up going with his grandfather every Sunday morning after church. I loved how cozy and calm the environment was. This cafe is a cute treasure tucked away and hidden by locals. I got a plate with biscuits and gravy eggs toast and sausage. It only cost $10. That's half the price of something like Denny's or IHOP and I barely ate half my plate before I was full. We stopped in for lunch on our way to the Quecreek Rescue site and Mining Museum, cheese burgers were a good size and tasted great. I ordered soft pretzels appetizer with cheese. Where do I even begin, the service was OUTSTANDING, waitress was on her A game with everything, the food, the prices are one you can't beat, the sausage gravy and biscuits with home fries is what I had, it was more then perfect. The sausage gravy was just how you would like it soft and creamy, the biscuits were soft, moist, the most enjoyable biscuit a person can eat, the home fries are made just right, the tea is great, the gob cakes are delicious. Our coal miners cafe is a gold mine! (When it comes to food that is.) Everything here is absolutely delicious and at the most affordable prices. We found this great spot along route 30 while on the way back from our Gettysburg trip last fall. It was by accident actually, because we had waited empty handed over an hour at a nearby restaurant after ordering and decided to leave. That's how we ended up here, and we couldn't have been luckier. The dining room is beautifully decorated and has a bit of an old fashioned feel. They have a Christmas tree up all year round, which my daughter found to be amazing. The menu itself isn't huge but has lots of great options. Plus, most meals come with the salad bar. I've seen in other reviews that the salad bar is small, which it is, but it's so much better than your meal just including a side salad as most places do. Personally, the salad bar along with my meal is the main reason I love the cafe. Not only do they have salad with lots of topping, they also have fresh bread and homemade soups. I paid the average price of around 10 dollars for my alfredo and was thrilled to have all the soup, salad and bread I wanted included! My husband ordered a stuffed chicken, which had cheese and broccoli inside. He said it was the best he had ever had! My daughter went basic with a burger and ate every bite. We also ordered cheesesticks, which was the only thing I believe was not homemade, but still tasty nonetheless. The food was so good, one weekend we made the hour trip from our house just to eat here. I saw they had desserts, but we never made it that far either time we went! We needed a lunch spot after visiting Flight 93 Memorial up the road. We did not want to eat at a fast food franchise, so gambled on this spot, which I think is just called "Coal Miners Cafe" not "Our Coal Miners Cafe." Although we gave it only a 3, we are still glad we stopped. At 2pm on a Saturday in January, the place was kind of busy. Staff was super friendly and the menu was simple and reasonably priced. Lots of burgers and such (See photos of menu I posted). Nothing fancy on menu. My husband had turkey and waffles. Waffles were simply OK, but turkey was super fresh and hot. I had fried shrimp and fries. Just Ok and were made from frozen shrimp from bag. We skipped pies available for desert, they looked great and they said they make them right in their kitchen. But you know what, I would stop by again if ever in area. It's a sweet little spot and super friendly people. Food was OK, but options in the area are clearly limited, so this was an acceptable option for for us. read more

Entering through a hotel style lobby into seat yourself dining area with a wall of windows looking into back. Wait staff were soon to take our drink order and offer menus. To bakery management: the cakes made for our family gathering on 7/8/23 were extremely disappointing. Not only was the incorrect half sheet triple layer burnt sugar cake made for us but then the manager does not even listen to what my issues were because she's too busy cooking or being rude to customers. It took 35 minutes for my daughter to pick up cakes and Pay you the $160 cash. And that's a light time because she was not keeping track upon arrival. So she missed that time with family she rarely sees. But you don't want to listen even if it's just to improve your business. Shame on you. That burnt sugar cake was not edible. Forks were breaking and I don't buy cheap plastic forks. This event took me two months to prepare and cook for, I was so disappointed that my family and guests had deserts that were NOT near as good as the cake I paid to taste test the different flavors. Shame on you. The lemon was ok the pb was dry and crumbly. Couldn't even keep on fork. The half sheet burnt sugar was inedible. Let's not even get into the packaging of a dirty box you put the triple layer cake in. Shame on you. You give me $20 gift certificate to somewhere I'll never go again. Shame on you. I did not get back to jennerstown until Monday when I stopped In to discuss the cakes. My daughter waited three times. They brought out two cakes then she had to wait on the third. These people are liars. Sure hope the ants had a burnt sugar party in the dumpster where most of the burnt sugar cake is. The cake that I brought back Monday sat out in those plastic containers from Saturday until I got back to your restaurant on Monday. This is why they were sooooo moist as you say. Sure hope no one go sick from tasting it after, after you told me it was thrown in the garbage. I apologized to the hostess or whoever for using the "F" word when I got there but it was the only way to get the managers attention. She would not listen to me and continually interrupted me. I stop here about once a month. Tonight I needed to unwind. I stopped here, ready to relax. What happened? The twit of a waitress ignored me and waited on a table of four that came in a few minutes behind. That really irritates me! She never once greeted me. Of course, none of the waitresses did. After several more minutes, I stopped another waitress and asked who my waitress was. Her response was, "Oh, they just didn't see you come in." I replied, "I came in before that table of four." The first twit was my waitress, but she didn't wait on me. The one who did was ok, but needs to learn how to serve a gob cake sundae. The problem wasn't being short-staffed. It's been many, many years since we visited this place, and since we were in the area to see the Flight 93 National Memorial (a must-do), we decided that on our way back to stop here and give it another try. Boy, were we glad... From the outside, the place looks a little rough, and with a sign hanging on the front welcoming bikers, it might even scare a few people off - but don't let the "cover" scare you from this "book". Inside the place is decorated very handsomely in the area's rustic and woodsy manner - the place had a very homey feel. Once seated inside, we were surprised to find an extensive menu of breakfast, lunch, and dinner items, as well as specials all over the place. For lunch, my sons each had their Pizza Burger, which they both thoroughly enjoyed. My wife had their Belize (I think) pancakes, three huge ones covered in pineapple and bananas. I had their orange marmalade chicken with green beans. Both of us enjoyed our meals, which was the chaser to a very fresh, if not overly abundant salad bar. As a side note, we also tried the soups they had out this day - I had the cabbage soup, where my wife had the chicken noddle - both were superbly made. The server was very friendly and efficient, as well as helpful (since we were just surprised with the size of the menu- not expecting it) if not overly chatty. The one nit we did have was with the couple of flys zooming around our table. Although we didn't say anything, it was obvious to us that they were sneaking in a side door they were using to bring in the new tables they were setting out. Thankfully, these critters didn't bother us much, so it wasn't really a big deal (I've had much, much worse experiences in other places that had their doors shut...) Family reservations made months ahead of time for 19 people. These reservations confirmed multiple times over the week prior. They triple booked the Room with other families and parties. Didn't get seated for an hour after we were to supposed to. "Overflow" was the reason that they seated others into the room we had reserved. Then the seats we were given while another party was still in the room was a fold up table facing a wall as if we were on timeout. Unable to enjoy a holiday dinner with our family. Not enough seating for everyone. Only one waitress. Worst of all. The manager/owner was "too busy" to come address our concerns or talk to us about their mistake or apologize. Disappointing and poor management made me have to write a review. I would not recommend for anyone to go to this restaurant. read more

Went for brunch, using the term loosely , 17.95 the food was dried out. Salad bar was skimpy. Everything was about empty. Wish I had looked at the buffet before, definitely would not have ordered it.
