Basic tasting Chinese food but better looking inside. Green Garden isn't the typical strip plaza restaurant. It probably is the best of this cuisine in Woodstock. Could be because there aren't that many around. The menu includes cocktails as well as classic favorites. A place that's better looking than expected. It's not like the typical Chinese restaurant in a strip plaza. There's not a counter to order at with lots of big pictures of the food and the place actually has tablecloths. Certainly there's the classics everyone knows. It's about $6 for a cocktail, all with Asian and Pacific themes. Best one we got was the Pina Colada. It's about $11 for entrees. They have pretty good variety. I got the Bean Curd Home Style. This has black mushrooms and vegetables. Good and filling. There's also fancier things like fish and seafood. I've gone to many Chinese restaurants but this is always my go to, affordable menu with great tasting food. Service is always quick and you never wait long. The restaurant ambiance also is just so relaxing I wouldn't mind if I had to wait with soft music, colors, lighting, and endearingly retro decor. Portions sizes tend to be generous, and the staff come by frequently to ask if everything is alright or refill drinks. I just feel at home and never like I'm bothering the staff by being there. My family and I came here for dinner and although there were plenty of tables in the restaurant they had only 2-3 tables filled. The inside walls are pink with a green carpet and tables decorated with the classic 90s style plastic table cloths. More people seemed to come in for take out. The servers were attentive and food came out quickly. We ordered the Bo Bo Fire Platter which had a nice stove/fire in the middle with a mix of appetizers around it. I liked the BBQ and the shrimp toast. The other appetizers were a bit bland. For entrees it was family style sharing and we got the crispy duck, seafood sizzling rice and hong kong steak with a bowl of white rice to share. The portions are large and we had a lot of food brought home as left overs. Warning that the crispy duck has a lot of small bones and the meat was a bit dry/tough but the skin was indeed crispy and delicious. They don't have dessert beyond fortune cookies. read more

I so regret cheating on Chop Suey Hut today.. This place was close to our errand route so we gave it a whirl. MISTAKE. I went there specifically for Spring Rolls as the picture on their menu, depicted on their website. Spring Rolls are shrimp with vegetables, wrapped in thin rice wrappers. What I got was egg ROLLS. Veggies wrapped in I don't know what and deep fried. NOT Spring rolls. My husband got fried rice. Mediocre. #3 out of 1-10 scale. Then for the on the cake, not rude, but not the least bit friendly. Very bad experience here. The food is generally good, not great, so I would give it three stars. My cause for giving it one star is a STRONG issue with the menu. We ordered Spring Rolls, which were cooked in vegetable oil (they advertise this on their menu). Our son has a STRONG peanut allergy so we carefully ordered chicken with Hoisin sauce and Spring Rolls . While eating our son did not feel well, and after he vomited we found out that they use peanut butter in their Spring Roll; this was NOT disclosed anywhere. The reason I give it one star is that we cannot trust the restaurant menu. As parents, we could have asked, but when the item says vegetables, meat, etc. we did not see it as necessary. I put 1/2 blame on the restaurant for ack of disclosure on something so commonly at issue. read more

Stopped in for the lunch buffet. No frills, simple furniture and no decorations to speak of. We were shown to a booth and someone set down waters and a pot of hot tea. We were left to fend for ourselves at the buffet. The selection of food was...uhm, spartan let's say. Maybe around 15 items total. But what do you expect for $6.50, right? There was hot'n'sour soup, eggdrop soup, a couple choices of entrees, and a mound of fried rice, and another of noodles. Their regular menu is HUGE, not sure how this little place can offer so many items. Pretty darn good! We ordered the dinner for two which came with Happy Family, pork fried rice, sweet and sour chicken, an appetizer plate of fried wonton, spring rolls, and ribs, plus soup. The whole thing came with hot tea, too! So. Much. Food. The appetizers where yummy! Crispy vegi packed spring rolls and sticky tender ribs where a great meal kickoff. I've never been a huge fried wonton fan so for those I'll reserve judgement. The fried rice was a perfect proportion of rice, veg, and pork. We both agreed that the addition of bean sprouts was a nice touch. Happy family made for a happy Misha. I would have liked more chicken but the shrimp and scallops were perfect! The sweet and sour chicken should just be the standard. Plenty of veggies and meat with yummy bursts of pineapple. I'll definitely be back! PS. My family and I ordered from here last night for the first time. As I am writing this - my face has become distorted with a look of disgust. Can you picture it? The food here is not even mediocre - it's just not good. Period. We ordered the Chinese BBQ Pork - the pork tasted like it's been sitting in the fridge for at least a month. We also ordered Kung Pao Chicken - I can't even describe the flavor -- my first thought was that it tasted like cleaning supplies. And it wasn't spicy even though it's marked with a red pepper on the menu. The vegetable fried rice looked edible - our vegan son said it was pretty good even though he continued to say the spoonful smelled like farts. LOL We also ordered a small sweet and sour chicken which was absolutely flavorless. The crab rangoon was ok. This was the second Chinese Restaurant that we tried in Woodstock. Was not a a fan of the flavors of anything, and it was more expensive than other places. Egg rolls and crab Rangoon were shoved into the same bag. The bag felt greasy and, when opened, the contents were soggy and smashed together. The crab Rangoon was more of the "salty" vs "sweet" style (if that makes sense - so some may like that since it seems like most places lean towards the sweeter style). Ordered chicken fried rice, and to be honest, the chicken was so discolored I thought that they had given us beef at first. Requested extra spicy General's Chicken and was not given anything resembling spicy. The tray that it's given in contains dividers in which one side is the chicken (probably 10 pcs at most) with the other side broccoli and carrots. Not enough to split with my husband, so I had two pieces and gave him the rest. Didn't feel like I was missing out. Ordered vegetable egg foo young...it was icky. Patties co e in one box and then you get this gravy that is dark brown with uncooked vegetables In it. Not good. This is a gem of a restaurant, located in a strip center just north of the major highway intersection on the south side of town, virtually across the street from my hotel. I placed a carry-out order that was ready incredibly fast. The menu is large, reasonably priced, with numerous offerings from mild to hot. A unique feature of the menu is offering entrees in regular and small portions. I don't eat much, and the small portion was more than enough for me. I ordered Chicken Kow. The dish had bite size, tender and tasty bits of breast meat. Vegetables in the dish included pea pods, mushrooms, bok choy, bamboo shoots, water chestnuts, carrots and broccoli, all in a light, flavorful sauce, all served with rice. The restaurant doesn't seem to cater to travelers, though, with no utensils or dishes included. If you're in a hotel, see if there are place settings available, or you'll end up eating out the box, like I did. That's a minor inconvenience for a good dinner that was a wonderful alternative to a franchise meal. I will return! read more

Having lived and traveled throughout the U.S. and patronized many Chinese style restaurants, this little gem is not a upscale like PF Changs, nor at the other end, China Buffet or Happy Wok. However, it is reasonably good and have eaten here and taken out a couple of dozen times over the years. I considered value and cost in evaluating this restaurant. That being said, here is my take on them: The buffet is limited, but the type of dishes and quality are above average, with some of the dishes close to outstanding. None of the dishes are unique, just good, mostly flavorable and decently executed. Their take on Crab Rangoon and Barbequed Ribs is different and could be a turn off to some. It took me a while to come around to the Rangoons. The dinner menu, is extensive. However, zeroing in on a few items: the Sesame and Hunan Chicken are superb entries as is the Sweet and Sour Pork. General Zhou's is nice and spicy. Beef with Broccoli and Kung Pao Beef are quite good. Shrimp with Pea Pods is excellent. Children generally have liked the various Fried Rice dishes, Chow Mein,, Egg Drop Soup, different versions of the Chop Suey. You can ask the server to have the cook tone down the spicy heat or to ramp it up. (I've seen customers who were perspiring while they eat - no kidding!). You can ask them to make vegetable substitutions. Cocktails are not their specialty. Bottled beer goes well with a lot of the dishes, especially the spicy Hunan style offerings. Tea and almond cookies can really top off your meal. For takeout, as with all restaurants, you should check your order before leaving the premises. read more

White meat chicken, big menu, the choice of large/small servings, and the pastel decor??? Come on. Sesame Chicken is a favorite. Sweet and Sour Chicken and Empress Chicken are close seconds. Crab Rangoons are crispy and great with hot mustard. Egg rolls do, though, pale in comparison to Plum Garden in McHenry. Got takeout the other night and the owner was friendly, patient and served our takeout FAST. Whenever I'm visiting home and have a taste for Chinese, Green Garden is my go-to place. read more

Decent Chinese food. Been here several times with co-workers for the lunch buffet, which is just that... buffet food. Price for the buffet is under $10, and it has a decent selection. My co-workers selected this as the best Chinese restaurant close to work. I feel like I can't be too picky, being Chinese and feeling that I can cook better than the meals this restaurant offers. It gets pretty busy and has a consistent flow of patrons. My mother-in-law and I stopped in yesterday and had the lunch buffet. First thing we noticed was that there wasn't much veriety, not to mention that most of the pans had minimal food in them. The food was room temperature except for the General Tso's chicken, which was just filled prior to us getting to that pan. We had the house tea and water for drinks. The staff was so, so, but that is normally expected at a Chinese style restaurant. A few hours after we got home we both started feeling sick to our stomach's. It got much worse for me as I probably ate more than my mother-in-law did. Well that was just the begining of what turned out to be one of the worst nights of my life. I've been eating at Green Garden for more than 20 years and the food is always consistently delicious. You can't go wrong with their buffet at lunch (but this during COVID times, of course we can't do that) and we've been ordering take out lately - Ridiculously fast and SO GOOD! 2 weeks ago we ordered Thai from Green Peapod on a Saturday night. 110 minutes to be ready. Nearly TWO HOURS. Tonight we ordered Green Garden. Same time ordered. Ready in FIFTEEN MINUTES. And just like expected, everything we perfect. Some favorites - Mongolian Beef, Sesame Beef, Shrimp in Black Bean Sauce, and of course outstanding appetizers like Shrimp Toast, and Pot Stickers.
