Overall the staff - ambiance - service were great. Very attentive staff for sure. Food was only average. Chicken was dry and egg rolls were ALL cabbage - very little anything else. At first, the prices were somewhat shocking but the portions represent those prices. However, a single Pepsi was $3.99 - might as well had a cocktail - overpriced. I was craving for some Chinese food and Hunan Gourmet was the closest to my place. They were fast in having my order ready. I ordered General Tao's Chicken and added broccoli. Ordered: Egg rolls Crab Rangoon Ma Po Tofu Chicken with Garlic Sauce = $25 Quoted 15 minute wait time for Carry Out. Got it in 10. The lady running the register reminded me of a Tiger Mom (..or at least what I would imagine one is like..). I tried asking her about tofu dishes, but seemed really impatient with me, so I just went with Ma Po Tofu. I was a bit put off by the dingy waiting area, but the kitchen looked clean, organized, and like they have their ish together. The phone rang with several orders while I waited, so I was optimistic about the food. Verdict: Total miss. - Egg rolls - Greasy as hell. Mushy. Totally gross. - Crab Rangoon - Hardly any filling and tasted like 100% cream cheese. Skip it. - Ma Po Tofu - Flavorless. Not spicy despite the appearance of a few chili peppers in the sauce. Portion was large, though. Very saucy. + Chicken with Garlic Sauce - Waiting on the bf's verdict. This place used to be good. The last couple of times that I ordered from them the food was terrible. The quality has gone way down. The egg rolls were way over cooked. Almost burnt and mushy inside. The Chef's special's are not special at all. Mostly over cooked broccoli swimming in sauce. Not very much meat at all. Instead of cutting back on the quality. Why don't they charge a dollar or two more. Most of the time my order is around $15.00 to $20.00. An extra two bucks is not going to keep me away. But I'm not going back for broccoli soup! read more

First time eating here and it was delicious !!! I am super picky when it comes to Chinese food and honestly this was well worth it ! The egg rolls were very good , the chicken lo mein soooooo good and the chicken fried rice was tasty as well ! If I had to leave any not so positive it would be the crab Rangoon could be filled up more , the breading on the egg rolls a little less and the teriyaki beef sticks just a lot more sauce but I'm nit picking now . This place has excellent food for a decent enough price. Plus they deliver in Island Lake which is a pretty frustrating task in itself. They lose a star though because they never deliver on time or with consistent timing. You'll basically get your food any time in the next 1/2 to 2 hours. Always warm though. Best Chinese food around. I always buy here when friends visit and are looking for good Chinese food. Highly recommend the Lo-Mein noodles and house fried rice. They have all the typical Americanized Chinese food and everything is great for a take out restaurant. was a little worried about this place based on some of the reviews..... the service was okay, I ordered the plain mein and that was good... and also the Moo Shu Pork which was horrible. It contained very little pork and all I tasted was something that was burned, and the veggies were all basically raw. also..... after I saw the guy cook my food he wiped the sweat off his forehead with his bare hand and then put that hand directly on a head of cabbage and started chopping...... wow. This is a nice place with great tasting food. It's exactly what you'd expect from a Chinese takeout restaurant like this. Staff is friendly (enough) the girl up front runs a tight ship here, which I like to see. Quality is very consistent as I order here somewhat regularly as I'm within walking distance. Their meat and veggie orders typically have way more veggies than meat which to me, feels like I'm getting ripped off a little which is why I gave it 4 out of 5 stars... But I understand they are trying to run a business here, so you do what makes you money. I have used this carry out restaurant many times, and found it okay. However, last night the food was terrible. I ordered Orange Beef. The order provided was provided with nuggets covered with a sticky sauce. The problem was there was no identifiable beef in the nuggets. Very good. I was looking for my go to Chinese place and I found it. Got the orange chicken dinner and it is enough for two. Also got a small sweet and sour chicken which was enough for my meal alone and for kicks got two big egg rolls. Needless to say we have plenty of leftovers. For cheap Chinese take-out, this place is does the job. They make the food fast, and it's cheap, but maaaaan is it liquidy! Jeez, every vegetarian dish I've ordered has been more sauce than veggie. For a meat eater, there are plenty of options, but based on my omnivorous family members' assessments, they're hit-or-miss. They've gotten our order wrong a couple of times, so check your order once it's ready. With each order, you get a fortune cookie, a few packets of duck sauce, and a bag of what someone apparently thinks is tea. The one stellar comment I can make is that the plain lo mein is just as it should be from a Chinese take-out place: cheap and abundant. Sub-par in my opinion. Called order in and was told it would be ready for pick up in 10-15 minutes. Arrived at about the 20 minute mark and waited for another 15-20 minutes. As I was waiting they asked me to repeat my whole order - two separate times. Ordered sweet & sour chicken, beef lo mein, pork fried rice, sesame chicken, and pork egg foo young. The lo mein was just ok - not a lot of beef and mainly noodles and a few vegetables. Fried rice was horrible. Was like the rice was just doused with pan drippings and a bag of frozen vegetables and not fried. Sesame chicken had good flavor and was not spicy at all even though it has the pepper by it to show it's a spicier dish. The sweet & sour sauce was good flavor, the chicken portion of it seemed a little over cooked. The egg foo young didn't have any sauce with it as it is normally served in every other Chinese restaurant I have ordered from. The patties were good though. Won't be a returning customer. read more

This is our go-to for Chinese take out. They're fast, they're DELICIOUS, and they have a ZILLION choices. Their lunch menu is fabulous and you get a ton of food for a great price (Lunch? Usually ends up being two lunches! Bonus!). The staff is nice, but short in their responses. Not a place where you go in for the conversation, but for cheap Chinese that hits the spot every single time? This is a winner. You only lost a star because you're closed on Mondays. :( read more

This is my go-to place for Chinese food in the greater Island Lake/Wauconda/Barrington area. I have eaten here at least 25 times. The atmosphere is non-existent, but what do you expect...it's a carry out place. Kitchen is in full view and you can watch them make your food. I have always found the portions to be very generous. Never had any issues with the freshness/quantity of meat or veggies. Yes they are heavy on the sauce but some of us like it that way! Fast service.
