I feel that 3.5 stars is really pushing it here. I gave Plum Garden 3.0 and it's probably slightly generous. Service was good and atmosphere was pretty cool. Food on the other hand...mid. Not bad Chinese food but not good either. On top of that, we got the lunch "specials". Not quite sure what was special about them because it certainly wasn't the price. Expect to pay between $16-$20 plus the cost of a drink for your meal. Much better choices in the surrounding areas is all I'm saying. read more

Ok so I have gone a few times and it had it's high and low points. Went back earlier this week for two of us and did a pick up order to go. There were to summarize first still highs and lows, but probably overall more highs than lows, which was good. Read the other reviews for ambiance and service or refer to the pics I'll try to add to see what it looks like from the entry. So to comment on my to go order. It was given to me very warm and stayed that way til I got home. Plus. I ordered the Perry Moy beef large since it was for two. It was around $24. But definitely enough for two with lots of tender beef (plus) and big chunks of tomato and pepper and pea pods. The sauce was the brown garlic sauce and it was plenty garlicky. The whole thing would have been a total plus iv the veggies weren't in such big chunks so that the pea pods didn't get soft and overcooked waiting for the peppers(still crunchy somewhat, to cook. Second the pea pods still had stems and such on them and the tomato top come part still on a piece of tomato and the hard yellow center on a few more. No red peppers that I could see and very few onion, mostly tomato. If the veggies were prepared with more care, it would have gotten total plus, but, there was that. We also got the crispy honey chicken bowl. It also was plenty warm at home, the chicken itself was big chunks of breast and nice and tender. It was not dry or overcooked which was great. The breading was not crispy for the most part soft, but I'm guessing it's hard to keep crispy food crispy in a to go plastic. carton. I only wish their meat dishes had more fresh veggies in them two. Next time I will remedy that with an order of their Szechuan veggies. Had those in the past and they were good hoping they have still cooked those appropriately time/size wise. It came with plenty of rice and definitely enough for two also. The enough for two was good because the two things were $40, so I figure about $20 for two people with actually about 2servings each. Not bad price wise. ALMOST forgot the most disappointing of it the chicken came with an egg roll and I chose the veggie. Had a harsh taste that I can only guess was because it was canned veggies as the inside of the crispy wrapper was gummy. So overall good experience, altho some tweaking on the veggies cooked and included could make it much better and I'd feel it was a more reliable tasty experience. read more

I drove an hour and a half coming from work to pick up food for my son's birthday as he was sick so we couldn't dine in. When I called to place order , I asked them to please check that order was correct. I get home and they gave us wrong item and missing item.I called the restaurant to only get "I basically don't care options!" I paid $84 to be treated like that. I have been a customer for 30 + years. Too many mistakes & very poor management the last several years. Front counter girl was apologetic. But Tamara the manager didn't care. The food was phenomenal, I had the Steak Fried Rice. The steak was medallions of filet mignon and I had plain fried rice. Even the sauce was great, I could lick the bowl. The chef style fried rice, bbq pork appetizer, and the almond cookies were very good. You won't be disappointed with those items. I also had the Crab Rangoon, which was waaaaaay too cream cheesey. I barely tasted the seasoning and other parts of it. I believe I could see crab inside (I'm not sure if real or imitation) but I definitely didn't taste it. It was a slight garlic on mostly cream taste. The plum garden egg roll was massive and didn't taste bad. It wasn't amazing, but was more like I was eating a burrito. The usual egg roll firmness or texture didn't exist. I'd probably get it again if I ever went again, but it would probably do amazing with sauce. I forgot to take pictures of it, but I got the General Tszo chicken, which is my favorite dish. It was down right horrible. The skin was 'melting off' of the chicken, so I was biting into the texture of slop. The flavor wasn't the norm of general tszo either, and tasted closer to orange chicken. They gave me sauce that wasn't standard with Chinese takeout, which was a bit weird. I had 3 containers of an orange marmalade like sauce, which didn't really seem to fit any of my items, even though I tried a bit with the egg roll and a bit with the crab rangoon, it just wasn't pairing well. They also gave me a small container of what I can only assume was some sort of horseradish sauce. It taste like American Wasabi (which is usually just horseradish, since real wasabi has to be made on the spot) and I wasn't sure what the point of it was. For the area, the food is good compared to. Had the General Tzo lunch. noodles and the PG Egg Roll. All of it was very good, not oily, but I didn't take it as a carry out. So carry out food when you get home tastes different than eating in there I'm sure. Place looked clean, people were nice. Let me start by saying, if you are going on a weekend, make a reservation. We mistakenly thought we could walk in - and while we did, we had to wait for a bit (with many others waiting tightly packed in). That's on us though. I loved the atmosphere. Just old school enough and really added to the experience. The plum garden egg rolls looked similar to a take out place that was around for many generations in the city but since closed down, where our family loved the egg rolls. We were hopeful these would be the same. They weren't. But they had their own story to tell and the homemade sweet and sour is fantastic! We'd order them again, but might try some other kinds since they offer a number of varieties. The crab Rangoon was outstanding! It had cream cheese but plenty of crabmeat too. And I loved how they were shaped. I could eat those forever with the sweet and sour. I opted for a crispy tofu meal. They had 6 different options for the preparation, which was great. I tried the crispy honey and really enjoyed it. Next time I'll try another. The person I was with had the Mongolian beef and really liked their meal. The portions are huge (even the small!) so we both had plenty to bring home. Whatever you do - save room for their homemade donuts. I would have never expected that on the menu, yet there they were. And they were warm and delicious! The dipping sauces were a lovely added touch. They have a great drink menu as well. Also, a few tables around us were celebrating birthdays. It seems like just recently they Raised the price a little to high.. example last summer I placed an order over the phone to pick up small order shrimp egg foo young I've ordered it before I know the price but when I walked in to pick up the gentleman told me it was $23 I honestly thought it was a mistake I thought they were changing me for a large order but Nope he told me that was the price I know it paid less a year prior about 6 dollars less. .. This is difficult for me to write, because my wife and I REALLY wanted to like this place... it's close to home, and the atmosphere was great. We loved the way the place was decorated, and the service was also great. But the food was not.... Chinese. Like seriously NOT Chinese. There's probably a reason they have the kitchen obscured, because I doubt there's a wok in the place. My General Tso's chicken was just chunks of chicken meat with a batter that just got spongy and flavorless when they were either deep-fried or cooked in the oven and then smothered in some sort of sauce that was somewhere between orange chicken sauce and sweet & sour sauce. It was not garnished with dried chiles, garlic, sesame seeds, or anything else typical of this dish. To top it off, some bites were cold. Wife's beef with broccoli wasn't bad, but also lacked an authentic Chinese touch. For authentic Chinese food we'll stick with Panda Express for now and keep looking for an authentic local dine-in place. read more

When we walked into the restaurant there was a little waiting area. On the wall is a giant chalkboard and you get to write whatever you want on the wall using sidewalk chalk. What a cute idea and a fun thing to do while waiting for a table. We waited about 10 minutes for a table and the restaurant was really crowded which is always a good sign. When I open the menu the first thing I noticed was an egg roll that had macaroni and cheese noodles inside. We could not resist ordering that for our appetizer. They are sold individually and they were pretty large so I split one with my husband and I think that's a good thing to do because it was pretty huge! It wasn't what I was imagining but it was tasty and very crispy. My husband and I split a order of egg foo young w/pork. For our side dish, we picked the pan fried noodles and they were crispy and delicious. The egg foo yong patties are humongous, we each had one and we split the noodles in half and we felt full and it was plenty of food for us. After dinner we were given a plate with almond cookies and fortune cookies. We had a great time and we enjoyed our meal! We even stopped in the slot / gaming area and played a little. My dear friend Maureen has lived in McHenry county for decades, and she swears that Plum Garden serves the BEST Chinese Restaurant style food that Chicago's northwest suburbs has to offer. So when she moved me here, after my total destruction in Los Angeles, following 27 years of living there, the first Chinese eatery that she took me to was this one, because she knew that authentic Chinese cooking meant a lot to me, and that I deeply missed my old home. And, while eating our lunch special - even as she made "yummy" sounds over her food here, I sat dumbfounded, because for me, it wasn't Chinese food at all. I guess that after living for so many years in the heart of America's most authentic Chinese food making community, the "626", I just couldn't Fall for the hideously Americanized dishes that Plum Garden presented as being actual "Chinese" food. So, to review this place fairly, I instead have to look at this stuff as simply "Chinese-inspired food" adapted to succeed in the culinary exile of McHenry county - and in McHenry county ONLY". That being said, let's take a deeper look into the imitation Chinese food that is offered here. First, the POSITIVES. Plum Garden is spacious and clean. Even the bathrooms are pristine (for public bathrooms). The dining area is large, with an odd decor of semi-fake Chinese style artifacts hanging on the walls, and a loose theme of Chinese astrological signs permeating whatever bits of restaurant materials that it can, from placemats, to menu covers, to coasters. This offered at least some reading while one was waiting for their food. I have eaten here three times, because Maureen loves me, and she thinks that this food makes me happy, being 'sort of' Chinese, which she knows makes me feel 'at home'. So I have tried a number of my own lunch dishes here, as well as tasted all of hers. We have never come here for dinner, because dinner here is almost twice as expensive as lunch, and the lunch portions are huge. So, I can only review LUNCH. But lunch here is a good deal. We received SOUP, An APPETIZER (an enormous chicken Eggroll, a meal in itself), a MAIN COURSE, and RICE (plain or fried). The fist time I order Sweet & Sour Shrimp, and Maureen ordered Chicken Egg Foo Young. Both were pretty darned good. For our second lunch here I ordered Mongolian Beef (or so they called it), and Maureen ordered General Tsao's Chicken. These were both tasty but less successful than our first lunch. On our third visit I ordered Garlic Shrimp and Maureen ordered Orange Chicken. Again, these were both less successful than our first lunch. Overall, the food here is tasty, but it's not really Chinese. It's not even As Chinese as Panda Express, but it is better - fresher - more homemade - and the portions are MUCH Larger. The service here is also good, even though there is not an Asian face in sight. To wrap the Good things up - the Lunch is a good deal, everything tastes fine, and I went home with enough leftovers that they took me two days to eat. They even gave me a to-go cup for my tea. One last good thing is, at the end of the meal we got fortune cookies. Old School. The NEGATIVE things: Music played loudly, filling the dining room with an in congruous selection of some pre-selected play-list of 1980's rock, no doubt the result of the owners purchasing a generic contract from Spotify's "commercial 'background music' selection for businesses". And the few others in the dining room were all old, like me, and the music playing loudly had Nothing to Do with Any of us. When I asked the manager to change the music to Chinese, or at least to lower the volume of the 'canned' music she refused. Also, on two out of my three trips the staff got my order wrong. The first time was when they brought me Sweet & Sour chicken breast instead of Sweet & Sour Shrimp. They corrected it quickly, but still, I'm a demanding bitch, and a lot of other people wouldn't have said anything, and just eaten the wrong order. So, in general, the good things outweigh the bad. If you are looking to eat fake Chinese Food that is tasty and has a decent lunch deal, up here in McHenry, this might be the place for you. But don't expect anything truly Chinese. read more
