Very cute shop. White interior is in stark contrast to outside Hotel Street in Chinatown in a good way. Looks like they had good business in the morning with the empty spots in the bakery display case. Cheerful lady who immediately began letting me know which items were popular. They have beverages for sale and 4 small tables if you want to chill and rest from shopping. Okay, I finally tasted the chocolate topped cheese cake. I enjoyed the flavour. More cake than cheese but still tasty and moist. Thumbs up. I will try to go earlier to a full display case.

Recently picked up a few pastries from Geen Island Cheesecake. This business has a scooter friendly entrance. I was able to get to the counter and make my selections without getting off my mobility scooter. The young lady that took my order was friendly and answered a few questions. I ened up getting and assortment of Cheesecake and a couple of custard pastries. (Thank you Paul C for pointing out the custard). It was excellent. The Cheesecakes were the Japanese type. I prefer the dense and heavier Cheesecake. If you prefer Japanese style, Green Island would be a place to try. Enjoy

I didn't have any cheesecake. 07:45. Just 15 minutes after opening. The showcases filled with fresh baked, still warm PETs and glistening, golden brown, savory bready breakfast treats. Pastel de nata AKA PET that is not exactly a PET. It does taste great. Outstanding layered shell made rich by what seems to be clarified unsalted butter and lard giving it a crisp yet yielding texture and rich flavor. The custard itself is well caramelized but does not taste like the traditional Portuguese custard (not as creamy and rich) rather like a Hong Kong egg tart. Being slightly sweeter and firmer it pairs so well with the shell. They have added a good selection of very well made savory breads. Pillowy soft. Kewpie, Spam, cheese and a brushing of some kind of fruit glaze makes for an outstanding snack. Fairly priced with friendly service. Takeout only. A solid Chinese bakery that has found a lane that compliments the other offerings in Hawaii's Chinatown. Will definitely return.

We were in town for the 2026 Chinatown Parade. On our way to pick up some New Year supplies we came upon Green Island Cheesecake Bakery. Located on Hotel Street just before Sun Cheong as you head towards River Street. In addition to their wonderful baked goods they also make a good selection of specialty drinks. We tried one of their most popular items, the Chocolate Cheesecake. Lighter and fluffier than the New York cheesecake but very flavorful. Service is very good. A definite must try when you're in town

A bit on a pricey side for pastries and sweets. Not a big fan of their cheesecakes, but the honeymoon cake (lao po bing) is actually pretty good. The skin very buttery and flakey. I also like how it's not too sweet. It's an Asian mom approve sweetness.

Part 2 of 2 9/5/25 Friday with the meeting of friends. This portion of the review is a part 2. The first part was the drink and a view of the cafe. There I mentioned that I bought my Kona coffee Latte and it has good hints of possibly "peaberry" Kona coffee flavor adding it's much -- the even ratio of milk to coffee. In other words, it was great! And made really well. The cafe worker even brought it over to where I sat. In this second part I'll mention the food. My friend arrived and we enjoyed the Portuguese egg tart, a piece of original japanese cheese cake, a honeymoon cake. Let's talk about this Portuguese egg tart. A Devine perspective-- my POV- I've had perhaps three distinctive eggs tarts in my time and here- the Green Island cheesecake/ egg tart is the 3rd in the three I tried.. it's noted for its light flaky sweetness... it's not heavy- it's not a thick mass of tart egg.. and it's not heavy on crust.. it's that flaky pastry style not the pie style... some tarts have the mass of cookie short bread style.. if I recall one that I ate in Australia can be considered more the opposite to this egg tart... that one would be egg tart #2 which was in a place called- Tim Ho Wan / Melbourne CBD, Australia- in 2015. To quickly note... the base of that egg tart was not thick but a more "pie crust" style. The Green Island cheesecake Egg tart is light. Filled with a more sweet to custardy egg texture and it's very obviously smooth and great- done the way an "egg" custard should be without cuddling when it's whisked in creation... the flaky pastry part of this egg tart is yes "FLAKY LAYERS" it's easily to see the chef had properly turned the dough for these egg tart... to temper the custard and then have the mixture poured into the set pastry crusted bases to bake. In the picture of the cut open egg tart-- the middle, you can see the flaky texture and the custard of the whole tart... it's very delightful... preference is a thing... lots of people like their egg tart a certain way... I very much like the egg tart here at Green Island Cheesecake.... I've made a mental note of this egg tart here and may come back to buy More for a get together or something similar. Lastly, let me give a mention of the cheesecake. It's a automatic love. If you had eaten the Asian style cheesecake this is just as delightful... I've had my first Asian cheesecake in Australia. Where it's a near staple since there's a heritage of the European Vietnamese traditions there from the 1970's (post Vietnam war brought over a substantial population of migrants) and with this is a French Vietnamese breads and savories that I am only NOW seeing here in Hawaii. ((If your know Brug Bakery "stuff" it's a standard in and around City limits Australia- it's where I discovered the cupi Mayo and chive buns- yummy and it's around every street corner))- Green Island cheesecake makes a "Hawaiian style Ube Cheesecake" I'll Have to try that one soon!! The Honeymoon cake -- disclaimer: you must love the condensed coconut middle found in what's called a cocktail bun (sometimes) I'm glad that I don't have any issues with coconut yet. This moon cake is delicious- carrying the same flaky pastry texture as the egg tart and very much baked with the sheen of egg wash with sesame seed sprinkled on top... yes it was a delicious bite and so yummy with my Kona Coffee Latte... I'm pleased with the trendy environment, the service being exceptional and ... the care being made for the elusive "Egg Tart" oh yeah - it's a place worthy of my return!! Thank you Green Island Cheesecake for. Delightful experience

Feeling cheesy... I know that's so cheesy but so is this new biz in the heart of Chinatown, Green Island Cheesecake a place to find Japanese Cheesecake and Portuguese Tarts and I'm not sure about what type of tarts they are but looks so rich and flakey but as for the cheesecakes it definitely was a nice and luxurious bite. Stopping by on a late Sunday afternoon does have it's perks with street parking is free and majority of the shoppers have left for the day so it was a breeze to find a spot though sadly what's left in the shop was less than I hoped especially since I glanced at the menu I was so hoping for a bit of variety. With flavors of Pumpkin, Matcha, Ube and Chestnut you know I was excited only to see Ube and Matcha as the Ube looks more on the rich denser texture I opted for the fluffy Matcha and noticed Berlin and asked what type of cheesecake and found out it's a more richer type from the signature...hmm. You first place your order at the counter and select the available cheesecake from the display case, service here is very nice and friendly and they do have self service water available as well is very nice and thoughtful. Well the Matcha was definitely lighter and fluffier like a Japanese cheesecake and not too sweet so it was an easy bite despite still being full from lunch and it was nice that I was able to enjoy it there on one of a few tables they have available, great treat. Thank you!

Went back hoping to try the matcha drinks which looked so delightful in other posts. Still no iced matcha. Sunny, the pleasant woman at the counter explained that they are having difficulty getting the matcha that they like to use which is the reason they have been out of the drink. I DID find my happy place with the slice of Asian styled matcha cheesecake. By the time I got it home, it had been sitting out at room temperature for a few hours. Perfect temperature and perfect compliment to my afternoon coffee. Not too sweet. Nice and fluffy. Still prefer the creaminess of egg custard tarts around the corner on Maunakea St though I did appreciate the flakiness of the crust on Portuguese tart. I can see why Paul C, unofficial mayor of Chinatown, and others enjoy this pastry. Will be back for more cheesecake goodness and maybe when they get their matcha back in stock. Sunny did mention that they serve 100percent kona coffee. That could be nice too!

Ten percent off during Grand Opening of Green Island Cheesecake in Chinatown, Honolulu, Hawaii... Hurry! Don't miss this deal on high quality Japanese-style Cheesecakes, Portuguese custard tarts, Chinese Honeymoon cake and other desserts! I actually was going just for the Portuguese Tart, but since I was there, I decided to try one of everything! I was pleasantly surprised that I liked the cheesecakes so much! They are fluffy, light, and not too sweet! The matcha has a slight bitterness and the ube has that sweet potato essence! The Portuguese Tart has flakey, crisp crust! It was exactly what I was expecting! It's not as sweet as usual! The Honeymoon cake has a mixture of coconut and wintermelon? I liked the contrast of the chewy filling with the crispy outer layer! I highly recommend Green Island Cheesecake! The shop is clean, bright, and spacious! There are a few tables with chairs for dining in! Service is friendly and efficient! Thank you for a wonderful experience!

If you're wandering around Chinatown and craving a light dessert, stop by Green Island Cheesecake. Their traditional Japanese-style cheesecake is light, fluffy, and perfectly airy--just the right amount of sweetness. The Portuguese tart features a delicate, flaky crust with a creamy, custard-like filling that hits the spot. Pair your treat with a hot cup of coffee or a refreshing mango drink for the perfect midday pick-me-up. Definitely worth a try if you're in the area!

Japanese cheesecake, Portuguese egg tart, Chinese wife cake
    Angel H.

My mom told me that a new bakery opened in Chinatown and asked if I wanted to try it out. Of course I did. She picked up four slices of Japanese cheesecake, a Portuguese egg tart and a Chinese wife cake pastry. It was all good. The Japanese cheesecake was light, fluffy and not too sweet. The Portuguese egg tart had a really flaky crust. While it costs a little more at this bakery, I'm happy that there's a new bakery in Chinatown.

I love Portuguese egg tarts but they are hard to find. So when I saw their selections it was the Portuguese tarts that caught my eyes! I had 2 to go and they were great! Good flavors and the crust was very flaky! I'm sure they would be even better when they're piping hot! They also have different types of cheesecake to choose from. There are a few tables in case you wanna eat there but it was a little hot there so I chose to take out.

****4.5 STARS*** As I shop in Chinatown every weekend I see changes. Some businesses close and some open. Step in Green Island Cheesecake (GIC). They took over the spot previously occupied by long time business Ruby's Bakery, next to Sun Chong Grocery. Yesterday was their grand opening as I saw flower arrangements and a lion dance troupe. I was on a tight schedule so I didn't hang around. This morning I stopped by and they had quite a few people checking them out so I followed suit. I saw their display case and had slices of Japanese style cheesecake in regular and matcha flavors but my eyes landed on their po-tat, or Portuguese egg tarts. A fresh tray came out so I picked up a dozen. I took them to my part time job where it was still warm as I unpacked them. Flaky crust and a creamy custard filling. Yum!!! GIV can be a little pricey but the quality was amazing. I'll have to return to try their cheesecake but it comes just under $6 with tax. Clean and bright. A great welcome to Chinatown and I wish them the best. NOTE: Hurry over as grand opening special yields 10% off. 2025 #20

We picked up a variety of pastries, including a few matcha breads, the chocolate emoji bread, bacon onion bread, and the Cinnamoroll blueberry bread. My boyfriend mainly had the matcha breads and his favorite was the matcha mochi an-pan. I tried some as well and really enjoyed the combination of red bean paste and chewy mochi filling. The chocolate emoji bread was so cute, but flavor-wise it was simply bread with dark chocolate inside. It was good, but nothing memorable. The bacon onion bread was probably my favorite, it was savory, flavorful, and satisfying. I also enjoyed the Cinnamoroll blueberry bread. The blue sprinkles made it extra cute, and the blueberry custard filling was yummy. For drinks, we ordered the Cinnamoroll blueberry iced tea lemonade and the blueberry white chocolate cold brew. Unfortunately, neither drink had much blueberry flavor. The iced tea lemonade tasted more like a classic Arnold Palmer, while the cold brew was a bit too sweet for my taste and wasn't my favorite overall. While the bakery items were good, they didn't completely wow me. That said, the Cinnamoroll collaboration was adorable and made for a fun experience.

I've walked out of the way from hotels just to get coffee and pastries here. I'm not even a pastry person, but this place made me care. The coffee, the croissants, the sandwiches. It used to feel expensive but justified because the quality was there. This last visit felt like the magic was gone. We came back during a long family trip with our two young kids, and the service was cold from the start. One employee seemed more interested in her phone and side conversations than the customers in front of her. The coffee was handed over messily, with liquid spilled on top like nobody cared enough to wipe it down. My wife also asked for a cup of ice when there were barely any people in line and instead of simply helping, the response was curt and dismissive, as if asking for something small was an inconvenience. The frustrating part is that this place built its reputation on details. Great coffee. Excellent pastries. Long lines that felt worth it because you were getting something special. Now it feels overpriced, indifferent and tired. Maybe the pastries are still good. Maybe the coffee is still technically good. But when the hospitality disappears, the whole experience changes. What used to feel like a destination now feels like another expensive Waikiki coffee counter coasting on reputation. I hate writing this because this place used to be a must visit for us. But after this trip, I'm done making the trek.

Since it was their anniversary on Sunday, also got their celebratory funfetti cupcake which also like their baked goods did not disappoint. The croissant base of many of their pastries is flaky. When fresh it crunches with every bite that you take. This time around we had the cinnamon roll, mango danish which had a chocolate mochi filling, and their char siu bun. It's such a neat take to have char siu in a croissant. We are used to having it in the doughy bao bread but in a croissant, savory with a crunchy outside tastes so much better. I love sweet but this one wasn't overly sweet, who would have thought that mango and chocolate pair so well together. It's the summer months, fresh mango on pastries. It was the perfect ripeness. For the cinnamon roll, you honestly cannot forget get their cinnamon roll...It's flaky and again the frosting is not overly sweet. Can't wait to get another box of their pastries again soon.

It's a cute little shop with benches facing the windows to people watch. It was hard to pick one item, but I ended up trying the Char Siu Croissant. I loved the flavors combining the sweet glaze and the savory meat. It's now one of my go-to weekend treats!

I love Pipeline Bakeshops Malasadas! I have been to several Malasada places in Hawaii but | love…read morethere's the best for the following reasons: 1. the size of the malasadas: some restaurants tend to make their Malasadas smaller and when places do this it ruins the overall texture and quality of it. The bigger the malasadas size the more airy and fluffy and more bread layers that will be inside. 2. their malasadas always taste fresh and the same quality each time. 3. their malasadas don't feel oily or heavy at all Overall I would highly recommend this place for their Malasadas! I'm so happy to have found them. I can back multiple times on my trip. They also have other desserts too that I have yet to try. They have ice cream, cakes, and other desserts Also tip: if you are ordering a malasada also order a coffee or a matcha drink to go with it. The cinnamon sugar from the malasada just matches so perfectly with a drink this restaurant is also a nice place for walking! There's lot of stores and restaurants to walk around! I'm trying to remember but I think there was a book off that was not too far from here! If you either drive or maybe walk. Service: staff was super helpful and friendly while I was there. I was having an issue with my online order because my phone was being glitchy and they were so nice in helping :) Also wanted to note their branding is so cute!! They even sell merch items too

However, there are many alternative malasada purveyors throughout Honolulu, so I depended on local vloggers to find the best ones. This one popped up often on YouTube, and as luck would have it, we were dining at The Pig & The Lady on the next block. How calorifically convenient. We took the opportunity to stop by for a pre-dinner snack since they closed at 6PM. It's a cute shop with multiple sweets including quite a selection of housemade ice cream and delectable mouthfuls called Cake Bombs (Photo 10). We decided we would be good and ordered one unfilled Malasada each. Dusted with various sugar flavors, they were just $2.65 a piece. I went for the Coffee, while Jamie chose the daily special, Cinnamon (Photo 6). They were soft and tasty, quite comparable to Leonard's albeit a tad smaller. That wasn't necessarily a bad thing since we had dinner ahead of us. However, we let temptation get the best of us and shared a $5.50 slice of the Ube Haupia Mac Nut Bar, a yummy combination of sweet potato and ube topped with haupia (coconut milk pudding) on a macadamia nut crust (Photo 9). Truth be told, it stole the show from the malasadas. FOOD - 4 stars... the malasadas were good, but that ube dessert was next level AMBIANCE - 4 stars...really a takeout operation with a lot of temptations SERVICE - 4 stars...very calm and orderly TOTAL - 4 stars...yet another spot for sweet Hawaiian decadence RELATED - Exploring Hawaii? BOOM SHAKA LAKA!!! the glizzy was yummy with the sriracha mayo drizzle. service was fast, you are personally served by them if you are getting takeaway. it is by a number system. it is on the third floor of some mall, pretty easy to find. if you can't find the mall just look for the GIANT teslas at the entrance. aka the little goblins of musky ahh crusty ahh elon musk.

Bad customer service. When you get there in a busy/rush hour, they expect you to grab a ticket but they barely use that thing. I waited with my family while the ladies behind the counter talk amongst themselves to finally notice us. Server Emily had a really bad attitude. She didn't even welcome us or greeted us when we walked in. Seems like they just hire anyone.. Rush hour is around 6pm-7pm. Not that busy. You usually see the same people everyday. Food at the restaurant... the prime rib isn't even a prime rib. New York and shrimp is too expensive for a very thin not deveined shrimps. I like my steak med rare but the last time I ordered it, they cooked it very medium well & so I got it taken back to the cook to get another one but a manager named Geraldine stepped in and said they'd have to charge me twice if I wanted another one. I'm a local and this was really unfortunate. Will never come back here due to the lack of customer service.
