The house is two-stories and on large grassy grounds surrounded by simple houses, churches and tall trees. Rockwell's Retreat as it's called, is for rent to folks and couples for celebrations & weekend getaway. It serves as a kind of rural Vermont B&B, prices are found online. Inside are large chambers, bright living spaces, a fire place, windows with scenic views, exercise rooms, kitchen bedroom chambers and a deck out front. Breathtaking mountain views…read more My family rented two vacation houses at the Wilburton for our large extended family of 25 -- I knew very little about the property before we arrived, so we were taken aback by the sprawling turn-of-the-century mansion and spectacular mountain views as we drove up the driveway. We absolutely never expected the art installations across the grounds -- including 18 x 26-foot Egyptian statues! The art and decor were eclectic and unexpected, and I found them very intriguing. It's definitely not your traditional resort, but that's what we liked about it. And the statues made for an amazing night with smores by the fire pit! The Reunion House was spacious -- we particularly enjoyed the living room, as it gave us enough room to comfortably host the other half of our family (about 25 of us) for a casual birthday party. There was plenty of seating with cozy leather sectionals and two large dining tables that seated about 8-10 people each. My daughter loved playing the piano in the living room, and the rooms downstairs with the daybeds were a great place for the kids to hang out and watch TV together. (The galley kitchen is a little small, but we were aware of this ahead of time because it was mentioned on their website.) We were there during a massive heat wave and all the air conditioners worked very well and kept us cool. Our kids loved the volley ball/badminton area steps away from our house. The outdoor pool is beautiful and it was so wonderful to be able to gather there easily with our whole family. The innkeepers were friendly and helpful. And we enjoyed looking around the mansion as well. There was so much do to in nearby Manchester -- great restaurants and shops, the bookstore is fantastic. We also enjoyed the ropes course and alpine slide at Bromley Mountain. We can't wait to return next year -- we'll be staying at one of the other properties even closer to my extended family's rental house and I'm so excited for its private balconies, jacuzzi tubs, and even more beautiful mountain views!

The main house was rented out for the weekend, so we were unable to go inside, but Melissa graciously offered to give us a quick tour when we checked out (contactless, as was the check-in), so we had the opportunity to meet Melissa, as well as the "doggie concierge" Jetson, and sampled some muffins baked on the premises. The building shows the character of a building from the 1770's so know that the floors are uneven and stair treads are narrower than today's standards. I like that about the place. The decor is country inn quirky and comfortable. This is a place to put your feet up, read or do a puzzle in the great room, sit in the meadow and watch the river run by, or if it's pouring rain, lay in bed and listen to the rain. We enjoyed an excellent breakfast each morning, complete with homemade muffins and granola. I appreciated that Michael was more than willing to adapt what he served to accommodate our food preferences and needs. I'm looking forward to my next visit to the Ira Allen House.

They accommodated my dietary restrictions (Celiac Disease) which I truly did appreciate. Breakfast was delicious and eggs made with fresh herbs from the garden and berries! First off- there is no set time for breakfast. You can wander down when you like. Second- the lady who runs the place has come up with a brilliant plan- she sets a steaming hot pot of coffee outside your door in the morning so that you can drink your coffee in peace (and privately) before venturing down to the main room. So simple but I've never seen another B&B do that. There really isn't much in Salem NY so you'll only stop here if you happen to be in the area. But if you do and you have B&B phobia as I do you can safely book here. I just remembered the name of the lady who runs it- Laura. She's really nice.
