GBC is still top tier. Yummy food, super friendly owners. Since 2020, they are takeout only with a few tables outdoors on the sidewalk. My absolute favorite "hidden gem" from here is the sfogliatelle! They make them fresh, from scratch, and only every few months. I typically get quite a few to last me a few days a though they are not *as good day 2-4. The coffee is always delicious and I love that they rotate flavors seasonally. noticed this coffee shop while walking down the street one day and made a note to come by and try it sometime. There is no indoor seating, just a few chairs and tables outside, and you can just order at the window. Certainly a convenient spot for someone that walks in the area to class or work. The service I received was great, a friendly person with very nice mannerisms! The environment was also inviting, although if you get there at a busy time it might be hard to find a spot to stand or sit. They have quite a few food and drink options, I personally just got a drink, but in the future will definitely look into getting food because the menu looked delicious. I decided to get a maple nut iced latte with oat milk, which was located on their seasonal "September" menu. My latte was pretty good, and took less than 5 minutes to come out. The drinks to my understanding only come in one size (I'm not sure how many shots of espresso for a latte, but my guess is two). The maple nut flavor is delicious, and I really enjoy that part of my drink, the espresso was not my favorite, but I think I will have to give it another SHOT. Found this place while walking down the street and loved the vibe it gave. I mostly came and just got coffee but the other day I decided to go try out their breakfast bagel. I was disappointed when I saw that the sausage inside the bagel was not fully cooked. It ruined my appetite. I decided to message the business on instagram on whether the sausage was pork just to make sure. When they replied it was indeed pork, I told them about the incident. They never replied. I am truly sad by the customer service provided because I really did love this place. Update - After speaking with the owner, she was very understanding and offered any item on the menu for me. She explained the sausage is homemade and while it may appear pink, it is cooked because they check the temp. I have been to Greenbriar a couple times and I wholeheartedly recommend them. Their smoked salmon bagel is a monstrosity of layers upon layers of fresh salmon with generous cream cheese, capers, tomato - the works. You can feel the weight of the sandwich when you pick up your takeout bag! Their breakfast burrito is also excellent, with egg, sausage, vegetables and some sauce. The sausage is rich, flavorful and greasy enough to add to the flavor without being overwhelming. Their breakfast sandwich is also wonderful! I tried their egg sandwich with bacon and cheddar cheese. The bacon is cut thin and crispy which is wonderful. With many of the places around offering vegetarian bacon I'm glad real bacon is served here! Other good aspects of Greenbriar are the very friendly staff, interesting menu overall and they're black-owned too. The only downside (maybe only during the pandemic, I never visited them in the "before times") is that they're a bit slow to complete an order, I'm guessing five minutes per order which can add up if there is a line or a big group there before you arrive. Definitely worth the wait though, and if there's no one in line, even better! read more

I've been coming to this place since it was a Christian-themed cafe called The Common Cup. After that, it became Pudd'n Heads for a hot second before Rev It Up took over, but only the Greenbriar made me a regular. The location makes it a natural VCU hangout, but this mom-and-pop goes the extra mile. The cozy space is inviting, with plenty of tables to work and nooks to network, and there's a steady stream of regulars all day. During the pandemic, the walk-up service was quite efficient, though another patron ate my order, thinking it was theirs. Then again, who could blame them? The food is imaginative -- within reason, as most folks aren't adventurous at breakfast -- and reliably fresh. In cold weather, one of my go-tos is the breakfast polenta (a goat cheese-infused take on grits with roasted vegetables and an over-easy egg), while the shepherdess salad (of avocado, edamame, greens, and herbs) is heartier than it should be. For a coffeehouse, the menu is extensive, and there isn't a clunker on it. Though the coffee comes from Rostov's up the street, I've not had great luck with the special mixed drinks, but the drip coffee comes with a refill, and it does the job nicely. read more

They are only serving takeout right now so there is no seating inside but they have a few tables and chairs outside. Both people who work there are really nice. The woman at the front is always welcoming and works hard. There's usually a bit of a wait because everything is made to order and I believe it's just the two of them. My mom and I had the Parisienne and Main St. You could feel the love as you eat the sandwich. The sandwich's we're done perfectly and the drinks were fantastic! One of the best breakfast sandwiches in Richmond. I'd even say I like their bagel sandwiches more than Nates Bagels. My go to is bacon, egg, and cheddar on an everything bagel - so good. They also have a great selection of fun, seasonal specialty drinks that are always delicious. In the fall they had an amazing maple cream latte that I still think about sometimes. For Valentines they did a truffle nougat drink that was also amazing. It can take a while to get your order and they're typically short staffed but the staff are super friendly which makes up for it. They are operating as a take away window because of the pandemic, but their indoor space was super cute back when they were open for dine-in. My biggest complaint is that I wish they were open more! I came here as a stop on the Real Richmond Food Tour. The food sampled was just ok. But I'm here to tell you about the Chai Tea they served. Ahmazing! !!! It was creamy, warm and all types of yummy. Super smooth like the best I ever had. When asked to buy some, they advised they're waiting for the shipment to arrive. Omg total bummer. When something Is that good, please keep it in stock. The set up is cute inside and I understand it's a husband and wife team running this establishment. Vising Richmond on business, and decided to stop in this quaint little coffee shop for a cup of coffee. I immediately fell in love with this charming little shop right outside of the VCU campus. The atmosphere is very relaxed, and not pretentious like some other shops I've been. There are plenty of seating options, and not overly crowded. I decided to order the Raw Vanilla latte with soy milk. The drink was delicious! I meant to ask for no foam, so I did find it to be a little too foamy. But that is more my fault than theirs. I also decided to order the granola w/ fruit and yogurt. The total came to around $11.50, which was a little pricey. However, i don't mind supporting local businesses. The yogurt was nothing to write home about, and the fruit on top was a random assortment of grapes, apples, and what I'm assuming was a plum. However the granola was fantastic! One other note, as previously mentioned by another reviewer, the wait for the food can be a little long. So I would definitely say that you should come here and expect to relax. I tried to go again, but something happened with their air conditioner so they closed their kitchen. I tried again the next day and the kitchen was still closed. Wow! I just happened upon this spot while looking for a quick, cafe style lunch, and it was perfect. I cannot praise them enough! The staff was welcoming and didn't push when I needed time to peruse the menus. I ended up with the most delectable sandwich I've ever eaten. I live about 20 minutes away, and I'm trying to figure out when I can go back to have it again. The Nancy is a bagel sandwich (I got an Everything bagel) with cream cheese, avocado, cucumber, tomato, and onion. It was toasted, salty perfection! I just wanted a house blend coffee (rich, delicious flavor) so I can't speak to the lattes, but I will definitely be back for those. I love that they have almond milk for non-dairy users. I have been to Greenbriar twice recently and cannot wait to go back! I stumbled upon it when I was grabbing something from the printer next door. I wanted to treat myself in the morning, but don't like coffee. They had a large variety of non coffee drinks to choose from. Since it was a rainy morning I went with a hot chocolate... a hazelnut dark hot chocolate to be exact! It was delicious, I find myself craving it every once in a while. It is a cute shop perfect for an afternoon of work or a girls meet up! I will definitely be back to visit and try new things. They have a nice breakfast menu as well as lunch menu. My experience with Greenbriar could have been much better. Maybe if I had ordered something else, it would've altered my opinion on this place? Probably. I decided to grab a quick breakfast bagel before I headed home to NOVA for the weekend. It was morning, but it was not half as busy as I expected. I went with my boyfriend and he also got the sandwhich + a latte. I paid for the both of us and it came out to around 22$, so I was very much confused as to how 2, 6$ bagels and a 4$ latte came out so much. Turns out they charged me for extra flavor in coffee, crossiant bread 2$ extra, and more for having the order TOGO.. I opened the bagel to see if the flavor would change my mind about how much this meal had cost me, and it was very bad. It tasted so rough and the bread wasn't toasted it was very hard to bite. The meat was not a patty but rather more like a hockey puck. This is not the idea I had when eating a bagel sandwhich.. Will not be coming back again, just because I do not want to waste so much money again. read more

Birthday cake latte: sweet and amazingly good, topped with sprinkles. Yums 2. Breakfast sandwich: my choice consisted of a sausage patty with egg between two croissants and a side of fruit (apples and grapes). Private parking is out back. This place is awesome! Another one of those blink-and-you'll-miss-it spots in the Fan. Man, let me tell you. VCU students are lucky to have as many awesome local businesses footsteps away from campus. It is so much bigger on the inside than it seems from the outside. It's bright, open, and filled with people from all different walks of life. When I was there, there was a steady flow of traffic. Although the salads and sandwiches looked amazing, I was craving pizza that day, so I just settled for coffee and decided I'd eat lunch there next time. I went to order my usual, a chai tea latte, but I was surprised that they had a lot of different types of chai lattes! I ultimately chose the almond flavor made with nonfat milk. At first gulp, it was incredible! But after that? Not so much. It tasted like diabetes in a cup. No matter how hard I tried, I just couldn't finish it. The thing about it is that the flavor was awesome. I can't put my finger on it, but it didn't really remind me of almonds. It was still really good. However, the sweetness that sort of surrounded the flavor was overbearing. Such a shame! Maybe if it were a little more diluted, it would have been better. Updating my review after having become a more seasoned coffee snob. As always, Greenbriar is guaranteed to be very cozy and without snobbishness that might come with other coffee shops. (You know what I mean.) The food here is much more satisfying than at other coffee shops in the area and everything I've tried here is delicious. You can't really go wrong with one of their bagels or sandwiches. The sunrise polenta is also great, but only order it if you have time since it may take longer for them to cook. I will say that the drinks here are on the sweeter side. I generally prefer to drink black coffee, but Greenbriar is the place to get my fix if I'm in the mood for a sweet, sweet latte. In this case, I highly recommend the birthday cake latte or the almond chai latte! The birthday cake latte is sweet and delicious and unique to Greenbriar. The rainbow nonpareil sprinkles can't help but make you smile. The almond chai latte has a sweet artificial almond flavor that pairs nicely with the chai. I mean artificial in a good way! I grew up eating almond jello (a Filipino dessert) and the flavor of the latte is reminiscent of that. My only issue is that sometimes they end up giving me a latte where the coffee or espresso tastes a bit burnt, but it's generally not too off-putting! Greenbriar is also the best coffeeshop in the area to get some studying done. It's quiet, tucked away, and has wifi and outlets available. (Forget about Starbucks!) Overall, VCU students are really fortunate to have great cafes like Greenbriar only walking distance from campus! read more

I love this place! It's so cozy and welcoming and there's also free wifi, so it's my go-to place to sit and sip coffee and study between classes. They also occasionally play some indie tunes (stuff like Vampire Weekend and Foster the People) and I enjoy it because I feel like it really matches the laid-back coffee shop vibe. Greenbriar also has a vast selection of drinks, both tea and coffee/espresso based - plus you can substitute soy or almond milk if you want. (My favorite is the birthday cake latte with almond milk.) Along with that, they have seasonal beverages, which put me in the spirit of the season quite nicely. For example, during the fall, they had a cardamom coffee blend that was delicious! As for the food, I became vegan recently so I can't really eat a meal there anymore other than a plain bagel but I've tried their sandwiches and they are pretty good! The smell of the food, however, lingers and I feel like a smell like it after I've stayed in the cafe for awhile. Not much of an issue, but I feel like I needed to mention that. read more
