    Maple nut latte with oatmlik
    Anja V.

noticed this coffee shop while walking down the street one day and made a note to come by and try it sometime. There is no indoor seating, just a few chairs and tables outside, and you can just order at the window. Certainly a convenient spot for someone that walks in the area to class or work. The service I received was great, a friendly person with very nice mannerisms! The environment was also inviting, although if you get there at a busy time it might be hard to find a spot to stand or sit. They have quite a few food and drink options, I personally just got a drink, but in the future will definitely look into getting food because the menu looked delicious. I decided to get a maple nut iced latte with oat milk, which was located on their seasonal "September" menu. My latte was pretty good, and took less than 5 minutes to come out. The drinks to my understanding only come in one size (I'm not sure how many shots of espresso for a latte, but my guess is two). The maple nut flavor is delicious, and I really enjoy that part of my drink, the espresso was not my favorite, but I think I will have to give it another SHOT. I will definitely come again in the future and try their matcha, probably another latte, and certainly food!

Found this place while walking down the street and loved the vibe it gave. I mostly came and just got coffee but the other day I decided to go try out their breakfast bagel. I was disappointed when I saw that the sausage inside the bagel was not fully cooked. It ruined my appetite. I decided to message the business on instagram on whether the sausage was pork just to make sure. When they replied it was indeed pork, I told them about the incident. They never replied. I am truly sad by the customer service provided because I really did love this place. Update - After speaking with the owner, she was very understanding and offered any item on the menu for me. She explained the sausage is homemade and while it may appear pink, it is cooked because they check the temp. Although I am still wary of it, I thought the customer service was amazing to be able to try another food item.

Was looking for a pick me up after I took a local exercise class. Found this gem about 5 min away. I thought it was a sit down cafe, but it appears to just be walk up at the moment. The person who served me was super nice and helpful. They have a small table or two outside if you'd like to stay. I had a pumpkin coffee and to be honest it wasn't my favorite. I'd be back to try some of the sandwiches or baked goods, but I'd try a different coffee to give it another shot.

    Pistachio matcha latte

I recently discovered this place and it has become one of my top favorites in the city for coffee! The coffee drinks and the food tasted amazing. My top favorites for coffee are the Praline Latte and the Pistachio Matcha Latte (I got both iced) and I love grabbing a breakfast bagel. The house made aiolis are delicious. Service is very lovely and everything is so reasonably priced! Popular spot so be prepared for a bit of a wait during busy times (so worth it) and there is no indoor seating, but it is in a lovely location.

There is a little bit of a wait because I believe there's only one chef. The wait is worth it because the food always comes out good. When I want breakfast I get the salmon bagel. It is a huge portion and enough to take for leftovers. There is no indoor seating.

Smoked Salmon Bagel. Finger for scale. It's a big boy!

I have been to Greenbriar a couple times and I wholeheartedly recommend them. Their smoked salmon bagel is a monstrosity of layers upon layers of fresh salmon with generous cream cheese, capers, tomato - the works. You can feel the weight of the sandwich when you pick up your takeout bag! Their breakfast burrito is also excellent, with egg, sausage, vegetables and some sauce. The sausage is rich, flavorful and greasy enough to add to the flavor without being overwhelming. Their breakfast sandwich is also wonderful! I tried their egg sandwich with bacon and cheddar cheese. The bacon is cut thin and crispy which is wonderful. With many of the places around offering vegetarian bacon I'm glad real bacon is served here! Other good aspects of Greenbriar are the very friendly staff, interesting menu overall and they're black-owned too. The only downside (maybe only during the pandemic, I never visited them in the "before times") is that they're a bit slow to complete an order, I'm guessing five minutes per order which can add up if there is a line or a big group there before you arrive. Definitely worth the wait though, and if there's no one in line, even better!

I've been coming to this place since it was a Christian-themed cafe called The Common Cup. After that, it became Pudd'n Heads for a hot second before Rev It Up took over, but only the Greenbriar made me a regular. The location makes it a natural VCU hangout, but this mom-and-pop goes the extra mile. The cozy space is inviting, with plenty of tables to work and nooks to network, and there's a steady stream of regulars all day. During the pandemic, the walk-up service was quite efficient, though another patron ate my order, thinking it was theirs. Then again, who could blame them? The food is imaginative -- within reason, as most folks aren't adventurous at breakfast -- and reliably fresh. In cold weather, one of my go-tos is the breakfast polenta (a goat cheese-infused take on grits with roasted vegetables and an over-easy egg), while the shepherdess salad (of avocado, edamame, greens, and herbs) is heartier than it should be. For a coffeehouse, the menu is extensive, and there isn't a clunker on it. Though the coffee comes from Rostov's up the street, I've not had great luck with the special mixed drinks, but the drip coffee comes with a refill, and it does the job nicely.

Breakfast sandwich: egg, turkey, Muenster and drip coffee.

SO GOOD! the customer service was great, food was tasty and coffee was delicious. I ordered a breakfast sandwich with egg, Turkey and Muenster on sourdough with a regular drip coffee. I'll definitely be back! Hopefully they open the inside soon! Thankfully the weather was nice and they offer seating on the sidewalk. Super plus that this is a black owned business! Stop scrolling and go to Greenbrier neow!

There's nothing BAD about this place, but there's nothing amazing about it, either. Stopped in for a chicken salad sandwich which came with a side, so I got orzo. Compared to Fresca's orzo, this doesn't even begin to compare. Sandwich was fine. My friend got a side salad with her BLT and it looked fine. Service was good. Convenient VCU location on Main.

    Peppermint, dark chocolate, iced coffee

I got a peppermint and dark chocolate, iced coffee and all I can say it is probably the best coffee I have ever had. Simply delicious!!! The lady that served me was absolutely amazing and nice!

The florets stayed crispy, the whipped feta, chilies, and pomegranate made an unexpectedly pleasant combo. The Reuben was well executed. The bread retained its sturdiness instead of the normal sponge like qualities you might find with other Reubens around town. The meat was melt in your mouth tender and every bite contained components of the sandwich, rather than the usual wrestling match of sliced meat in your mouth. The service was meh. It's counter service with sit down restaurant prices. Here's the funny thing: you are given a number for food to be delivered to your table. The waitress puts the food down on your table and directs you to a rolling cart where plates, napkins, etc. are BUT the waitress has to pass the rolling cart to bring you your food. Could we have not received appetizer plates and silverware when we checked out and were handed our drinks? I don't think anyone can get excited about Jason's Deli type service at lunch at Lemaire prices. If I had to choose a good time to suggest going to Susie's, go to Happy Hour on a sunny day and sit out on the patio

It was a weekday after work. I went to my homegirl's house because I missed her birthday I offered to take her out someplace nice. She said no way man and immediately said we were going to this sandwich shop. This was the only thing she wanted. So we were gonna veg out on her couch. Have a couple cocktails and whatever else and watch something on TV. And her new couch is the bees knees. For me, the sandwich was perfect. The bread was beautiful and crusty. I was afraid it was going to be toasted and too crusty, and I'd be fighting to bite it and my sandwich guts spilling out while cutting up my gums and the roof of my mouth like it's Captain crunch or something.. BUT NO! It was PERFECT to bite through. They load you up with the meat they're not stingy. And the sauces... BABY! The aïoli was fantastic. My only beef is that horseradish aioli needed a little bit more of a kick, but that's a personal problem. My friend got the chicken Caesar and I see why it's popular. It is so garlicky and delicious. I already have plans on what I'm gonna get next time I go and I don't live close so it's gonna take a special trip and I intend to make it.

Cons: While I understand the sandwich requires a strong vessel to hold the toppings, the bread was very thick and tough. The fillings did not match the bread proportion on this particular sandwich. The chicken breast was extremely overcooked and difficult to chew. Several pieces were leather-like in texture. Maybe chicken thighs would work better. I love the creativity of this sandwich and I get where they were trying to go, but the finished product was disappointing. A new line cook was being trained so perhaps this accounted for the miss. I've seen photos of the other sandwiches and they look delicious with better proportioned fillings. Not sure if I'll give it another try, but shoutout to all their fans in Church Hill.

The menu has so many tempting options that it was hard to choose, but we both landed on the Hot Chicken Sandwich with cayenne butter--and we're glad we did. It had the perfect amount of heat: enough to bring some spice without overpowering the flavor. On the side, I ordered the green beans after our bartender/server highly recommended them. Normally, green beans wouldn't be my first choice, but they were seasoned perfectly and ended up being one of the biggest surprises of the meal. My partner chose the mac and cheese, which was the superior side (although both were excellent). The service was friendly, attentive, and genuine throughout the evening. Despite arriving on a Friday night without a reservation, we had no trouble getting a table. They only accept reservations for parties of 5-8, so I'm glad we decided to take our chances. One of my favorite parts of the evening was chatting with another guest at the bar. He and his wife shared several entrées with their young son, and they couldn't stop raving about the short ribs--which their son happily claimed for himself by the end of the meal! They also highly recommended the salmon, so we've already got ideas for our next visit. The only real downside has nothing to do with the restaurant itself: parking in Scott's Addition can be a challenge. I'd recommend allowing yourself some extra time to find a spot or, even better, taking a rideshare so you can start enjoying your evening right away. Lunch.
