Doughnuts or donuts? However you choose to spell it, this place is great. My sister talks about this place all the time so with today being Fat Tuesday, it seemed like a good day to pick up a dozen doughnuts - plus the price is right. $11 for a dozen quality doughnuts, sounds good to me. I'm a fan if the custard filled but we also enjoyed their Oreo doughnut filled with vanilla whipped cream, traditional glazed, a blueberry sour cream and then of course a doughnut with sprinkles. The bakery is small with just a counter and a couple of employees but what else do you really need? If they hadn't told me it was in the strip mall right next to Rocky Rocco's, I probably would have drive right past it. Price - around $5+ dollars for 6 donuts including the ones with filling! Taste - First the 5 star donuts - I became a fan of their apple filled donut! The outer was so light and airy and inside was this contrasting tangy minced Apple filling!! The cinnamon sugar on top was yum too! I also tried their blueberry donut with frosting!!! It was great too! By far the best donuts I had! Now comes to the ones I liked but I would put them as 4 star donuts - Raspberry donut was nice and airy but the raspberry filling tasted more like a jam and was sweet not tangy, I expected a raspberry compote but this was my preference, people who like sweet jam will love this donut too! Same thing goes for lemon filling donut!! Not a big fan of the powder sugar dusting on the top of the donut. My husband had the Oreo cream filled donut and he said he really liked it! Must try this place! I can't wait to try their Apple donuts again! Parking - Right outside the donut shop you can find free parking spots! Or you can also park across the street. Inside - I don't recall any place to sit inside and eat the donuts but there were a few chairs outside to stand and eat! I'm in the UW band and for the past 3 years without fail, every early-morning badger football game day rehearsal, we make sure to bring a box of badger sprinkle donuts for the entire rank. Donuts are pretty good in general but there's something about Greenbush that sets them apart, let me tell you. They're an old school bakery so they know how to do it right. You bite into one of their donuts and you can taste the careful attention that only a local bakery would give. You can't beat $1 for a donut! I love the diverse flavors that Greenbush offers. I always get the coconut ones and I'm a big fan of the maple ones. I know they have a peanut butter oreo one. Their bear claws are gigantic! They are literally bigger than your face and maybe only $4? It's probably a day's worth of calories, but that's okay. They're open late night, which is great. Donuts can be for all times of the day. I will eat a donut whenever. The employees are nice and always willing to answer "what kind of donut is that?" You get what you pay for. Greenbush might be the last old school bakery in Madison. Gone are the days of Donut Delite. Even Krispy Kreme didnt stick around here. But Greenbush is a true old school kosher bakery. They are open insane hours, they have no tables to sit at, I dont think they even serve coffee. The bakery cases are the steel and glass fortresses not designed to be pretty. But the donuts. The donuts are huge, fresh, and exactly what you'd hope. They're best known for their apple fritters, which are the size and density of a fresh baked apple pie. I personally love Boston Cream donuts, and theirs are so filled with fresh custard that one bite leaves you covered in goo. Honestly I know I've tried other donuts but I keep coming back for those so regularly that I have no memory of the others. I'm sure they're great. They do sell out very quickly, so be careful getting your hopes up. If you want to sit somewhere with coffee and wifi and eat your donuts, they share a building with one of the better Rocky Rococo's Pizza locations. I used to sit in there on a work break with my laptop, a donut, and a pizza slice. Getting back to my original comment, they're definitely pricier than most bakeries. Cookies start at $1, most donuts are closer to $2, and the apple fritters are over $5. But you get what you pay for. Actually, you get a lot more value. read more

I've tried this place three times and at different times of the day to try to understand the hype and it's still lost on me. Yes the apple fritters are huge but other than size, nothing out of the ordinary. If it's got fritter in the name and it's from this place you are sittin pretty. They are $5, bigger than my head, and sooooo good. Eat the whole thing, as I often do (it's hard to share)...and you will start twitching. Really you will, but it is absolutely worth it. If you're new to the donut cult, first of all, welcome. From now onward, visions of sugary balls of dough will forever dance in your head. Your thoughts will evermore be occupied with sweet musings and that is alright. Know that you are in good company and that Greenbush is here to fuel your donut needs. And yes, it is a need. Fritter awesomeness aside, what sets Greenbush apart is the fact that they are open at such odd hours. And by odd I mean that they are open from 6am until at least 11pm during the week and from 6am to 2am on the weekend, if not later. Talk about a constant temptation. Wow this has to be my favorite late night joint in town! The aroma beckons you into this little miracle of a place, display cases of over a dozen variety of donuts tempts you as you wait in a seemingly never-ending line of customers. We came for the famous apple fritters and let me tell you, the hype is real! Even eaten out of a paper bag, the flavors beckon a more elegant calling. The glaze forms a shell in contrast to the doughy, soft dough, with spiced apple sprinkled throughout. Their other donuts were also wonderful, we devoured a oreo and sprinkle creation and the strawberry filling stuffed version was also memorable. I don't know why you'd get doughnuts anywhere else. These are really great doughnuts, possibly the best I've ever had. They're very fresh and the store hours are great. It feels kind of cheap giving a no-frills bakery five stars so easily, but they do deserve it. I couldn't do the doughnut justice by describing it, but in the age of manufactured supermarket and chain doughnuts, Greenbush's are a real treat. The others are good, too, but nothing compared to the old fashioneds, cake donuts, and fritters. You can even find their donuts at Woodman's and Willy Street Co-Op.
