For me the sauce was a bit too spicy and it overwhelmed the taste of the fish. The slaw on the taco was nice - creamy and crispy, but overall it was a middle of the road meal. The other thing contributing to the rating is that I had to wait quite a while after I was done to get my check. Visited a few days back with my office colleagues for Happy Hour, and we had a pretty good experience. They have a good selection of Cocktails, and some decent options in their Happy Hour Menu, including $2 Oysters that was pretty fresh. We ordered a wide range of appetizers, and everything tasted good. Service was quick enough, considering how busy they were. Staff were friendly, and the atmosphere was also pretty chill. I came here with friends on Friday night for dinner, and it was great! I started with a dirty martini, which was tasty, and they have blue cheese olives!! We shared oysters, the loaded tots, the baked Brie, and buffalo cauliflower for appetizers. Everything was delish! For my main, I got one beef taco and one shrimp taco. I remember liking this place and came several times when they first opened-- but yikes--I probably had one of the worst bar meals I've had in JC which is sadly becoming more and more common. My girlfriend and I both ordered the fish n' chips, and I ordered a cocktail (some bourbon orange liqueur thing, can't remember the name). The food came out in like 8 minutes which was the first red flag: Chips: McDonalds thin cut style (which is totally fine), limp, soggy Fish: WET, likely pre-cooked, frozen, then flash fried Condiments: maybe a tablespoon each of tartar sauce, malt vinegar, and Cole slaw Drink: the entire outside of the glass was sticky and the drink itself tasted like cough syrup and was almost as thick. Portion size: Slightly larger than an airline meal The place is big and probably fine for happy hour, but our food was absolutely awful. Our water came in Bud Light pint glasses which I'd be 100% OK with if this was a dive bar, but their interior lends itself to more "rustic sports bar." I've been going to Greenw Hook for so many years!! It's a great place for brunch or to have lunch or dinner or to have drinks or to hang out and play darts, speedball, and board games. It has a little something for everyone. The food has also gotten even better over the years. I love just coming for a drink and getting their appetizers- they are huge and great for sharing! The service is great - usually very easy to get seated right away. They have high chairs and were able to put my stroller in the corner at the back. If your baby is learning to walk, it is pretty spacious and you can probably walk around with your baby if they get a little fussy and you can't get outside because it's a bit too cold in the winter. We started with mussels and poutine. My cocktail was good and both apps were tasty. For entrees we had the pan roasted chicken and the prime rib sandwich. My chicken was juicy but could've used a little more flavor. It also came with with egg noodles that were oddly pretty cold. The prime rib was shredded and seemed more like thin/soft brisket. It was good but could've used more flavor/maybe a slaw? We ordered another round from drinks, cherry lime soda and jc strong ass both were good/ok. The creme brûlée was good but again was missing something. The ice cream that came with the bread pudding was really good. The bread pudding was just ok. Our overall consensus was that everything was just just good/ok not great/amazing. Our food tasted home cooked, but not in the way we expected from a restaurant. My boyfriend and I stopped by for dinner on a Saturday night. They weren't too busy so we were seated right away. There are tables both indoors and outdoors, although there isn't heating lamps or any light outdoors (better for lunch). Given that it's a gastropub, it was pretty loud inside so it's great for a social spot but wouldn't recommend for more intimate settings. It was also fairly dim inside. We started off with oysters with were cleaned well and tasted fresh (didn't expect less than that since it was $3 a piece). As for our entrée, we got the fish and chips, seared salmon, and a side of sautéed kale (gotta get those greens in!). The fish were chunky pieces and pretty meaty but I didn't like that it wasn't crispy enough on the outside. The batter was also a bit thick so they probably should have double-fried it. The fries were thin and crispy while not overly salty so I liked those! The salmon was cooked perfectly but I wish that they had put it skin side up which could have made it crispier. It came with rice and beans which were surprisingly flavorful and different that what I'm used to. I also really like the bok choy that it came with. It was charred perfectly. The kale was simple, cooked in garlic but I enjoyed that it was simple. Overall, I enjoyed my experience here. The food was pretty good and the staff was polite throughout the meal. WARNING: NOT A KID FRIENDLY PLACE & A TERRIBLE, ORNERY OWNER. Today, my nanny took my 2.5 year old twins for lunch as a Friday treat for cheeseburgers. They ate outside and got cold (it's always windy on that corner). When my nanny asked to be let inside, she was refused because the owner didn't' want "noisy" kids in the restaurant. If it was me I wouldn't have paid and I would have left, but she kindly asked for the check, paid, and left the restaurant. My husband and I immediately walked over there after hearing her story and confronted the owner (an older, white man with glasses) and he had zero remorse. When he asked us "what do you want from me?" we simply said, perhaps an apology for how you treated our nanny and our family and he just stared back at us with a blank stare. No apology, no remorse, nothing. I just want everyone to know the kind of person they're supporting by patroning this restaurant. I had been coming to Greene Hook since the day it opened (I used to live in the building it's in) - I even went there during COVID and supported their business, ordering from them, etc. What a jerk and what a disappointment, after being a loyal customer for over a decade. If you want to put your business elsewhere in Paulus Hook, go to Lobster Shack, White Star, Amelia's, Tino's, Bistro La Source, Speedy's, sam .am, Buddy's - even Satis, they've always welcomed us with open arms. I was pretty jazzed to find a oyster happy hour on a Friday. The place was lively and busy and the oysters were great. Had both blue point and another fisher island oysters, they were 3 and 3.5 respectively and 50% off for hh from 4-6. What really irked me though was that on the menu it just says "oysters 50% off" but when I got the bill my waiter wouldn't honor the language on the menu nor did he inform me when I placed my order. The next annoyance was that my waiter said they don't do refills on soda. Mind you, it came from a gun/fountain and not a can. Lastly, we had the garlic/ginger wings. Now imagine what that should look and taste like. Well what we received were bourbon colored saucy wings that tasted like teriyaki. Strike three for me. I'll never go back over these slights in service and will find alternatives for my oyster fix. Overall they're severely understaffed and though the food was tasty, even if the wings seemed to not match the description, I was too peeved by the lack of attention to details and quality of service to visit again. The deviled eggs were worth the $8 - not watery tasting and each bite was filling. A taco is $6 and they give you 2 rather large shrimp. The mixings inside were full of flavor. The fries, which were $7, were not worth it. It's Mayo and ketchup and a bit more glorified McDonald's fries. I started with a Rose Sangria then a red one and I didn't like them too much so I stuck with red wine. My party ordered different appetizers and drinks and they liked them. This place is okay. It used to be my go to spot to grab a beer or to get some work done. I was always extremely friendly every time and enjoyed my time there. One day I went in and I was told by a server that I was not allowed in. I was confused because I had done nothing wrong. I asked to speak to the owner to explain the situation. He met me a couple of times when I was hanging out there. He never explained what the issue was. I called about 5 times, sent 3 emails, and still never heard back. I recently reached out again because I was interested in having some business lunches there, and again, still no reply or response with an explanation. That is completely unprofessional and disrespectful as a business. I'm guessing it was personal? No idea. The food is alright. Nothing really to rave about. Wonderful neighborhood restaurant, great vibes. One of our favorite spots for lunch with family, we have two little kids and they are always excited to dine there. Also we've enjoyed drinks with friends during happy hour and late hours (definitely won't take our little kids during those hours out of consideration for other patrons). Service for the most part was really nice! My sister and I came for the 4pm-6pm happy hour (half-priced oysters!) on a Tuesday. There weren't too many people but the yelp reservations are convenient, just in case. My sister enjoyed their poutine, and I really liked my fish and chips. The first batch of oysters were pretty good, but in the second batch I bit into one and had a mouth full of sand. :( I (as politely as I could) spit it out, but I was chewing on sand for the rest of the time we spent there. When I brought it up to the server, he responded that they can't help what's inside the oyster... but I've had many oysters and this is the first time it has happened. I believe adequately soaking the oysters is supposed to avoid this problem, but who knows maybe I'm wrong. Anyways, I stopped eating then and there and packed the rest of my fish and chips. The server did refund me for the uneaten oysters, but the petty part of me is low key upset I paid for that sand-filled one.
