Ben and his trusty side kick came by my new (but old) house and re-keyed three dead bolts and two knob locks. One of the dead bolts was archaic and he was still able to use the existing body and fit a great looking cylinder inside - while keying it all to the same key. I searched for weeks through locksmith recommendations to find someone who could change my front door hardware and install an August smart lock. I made several calls only to be told "what is a smart lock" or "you need to find someone else" or my favorite "why would you want to put that ugly thing on your door". First time I called Ben was some years ago because none of my doors inside would close and latch properly. He chiseled and carved and fiddled and fussed and all the doors close with a satisfying "click". Well, I moved and have a house and rental cottage. The lock situation was all over the place. The estate agent handed me a bag with a ridiculous number of keys. She advised I get things rekeyed anyway, so I called Ben again. He explained the idiosyncrasies of the antique door lock, got my entire house and accessory locks all on one key, eliminated one unnecessary lock and rekeyed my rental cottage so I would have a master key (one key to rule them all and in the darkness... oh never mind) and a cottage key. Ben is the man. Remember guys he is an individual skilled craftsman and he is very busy but is flexibly open to work with you. So he does most of these jobs solo. Ben is like that guy from the matrix with all the keys. That is Ben. Somehow my car keys came off of my keychain but I have my keychain completely in tact. Hmm odd, it will be a mystery and I did not have a spare so I called green keys aka Ben. If your car does not have a remote transponder, Greenkeys is the only one I know that can legally access your keys cut style by giving your VIN/License Plate number. Pretty much Ben said he could easily have made my acura keys and gave me a 15 minute window to meet at his office so he wouldn't charge me a travel fee to go to me(thoughtful, not greedy, great way to run an honest business). Came by picked it up and it came with 2 which saved me. Highly recommend Greenkeys to anyone. Couple tips: -He's mainly east bay/tri city so if you are a bit out that area make plans accordingly because sometimes he may be unable to make that trip (ie San Jose, Oakland etc) -If you have the ability to meet up with his office borrowing someone else's car do so, saves on the travel fee he charges to go to you -The Yelp $20 for $10 coupon is valid but only after 24 hours. I asked Ben to enhance the security of a front door rental per a tenant's request. We mutually agreed the best thing to do would be install a new stronger strike plate & two longer screws (a $5.00 item). It should take a sixth grader about ten minutes to install. Then I get the invoice: Service call: $100.00 Labor: $120.00 Strike plate: $ 5.00 Sales tax: $ 0.40 Total: $225.40 Wow. This should speak for itself, right? No, it gets better. He coerced our tenant into purchasing a locking mechanism that's installed inside the home, therefore drilling and installing this device with large screws inside our home without our permission. I don't know how to grade him as a locksmith, but I would grade him very high as a "salesman." read more

Wanted to give a positive review to Keith for rekeying my front door and patio door while Ben was out of town-- otherwise I would have had to wait until Monday after the weekend for an appt. I called for an estimate for a rekey to my front door, whoever the guys was quoted me 175.00 because it was same day and a national holiday. Which is obsurd.. He said it would be normally 110 which is still a joke of a price. I used a locksmith in the past who I found on yelp with 5 star reviews and he was the sweetest man but he recently moved out of state. When he came put he only charged me 65.00. I had told that to the guy that I spoke with and at the end of our conversation I received 3 text messages from him. One was a link about scammers, the next text was him trying to justify his obsurd cost and lastly was a very passive aggressive text saying" hope your 65.00 guy isn't a scammer have a nice day Green keys locksmith".. Those messages were very uncalled for. Nevertheless, I went back on yelp and found this super sweet man from Quick response locksmith who is out of Hayward but agreed to come to fremont the same day within 1 hour and charged me a very very reasonable price let's just say less then 100.00. Ben deserves every single 5-star review that he has on his site. We chose him based upon the number of 5-star reviews and were so glad that we did. He was super responsive asking for photos of the project in order to schedule a repair. He sent back photos of his license and proof of vaccination which were a very professional touch as it showed respect to his clients in these pandemic times. He kept his mask on even outdoors in the garage area which was appreciated. When he showed up, he analyzed the issue as we gave him a unique situation to solve, communicated the issues, allowed us to consider our options, and proceeded to complete the repair while remaining as he described his love of locks and the Tri-City area. He knows both topics very well as an almost lifelong Fremont resident and it is fascinating to listen to him talk about the history of each. He is very mechanically-inclined so he can handle any challenge and he involves the customer in the troubleshooting as much as he/she is interested. He helped us with a lock setup from the garage through a side door to the backyard. He solved our original issue expeditiously making it a better solution than our original setup and cleaned up after himself. He also lubricated a sticky front door for us for key insertion ease. Ben has the highest level of work ethic among the people I have seen, and he is very professional. 1) He was punctual. Our appointment was at 3pm, and he showed up slightly before then. 2) Here is the highlight: What I asked for was having my front door and garage door re-keyed. But what he did is way more than that. He noticed the problem on my garage door (it was not being closed properly.) and he spent very long time on trying to fix it. He also noticed my door handle was ugly painted, and he replaced with a used door handle he happened to get from other customer. He also noticed the other garage door (which I did not even mention when getting quote) has a poor door nob, and he replaced it with one of original garage door. Anyway, the bottom line is he really care about how my lock and door operates, (not only the problem I mentioned), and did his best to address the problems he voluntarily found. My wife was out to pick up my kids from the school when she locked herself out of our apartment. She called me and I find her this locksmith from Yelp based on all the good reviews. The locksmith said although he is very busy but still willing to help me out which I thought was a good gesture. However, my wife waited for almost 2 hours after she picked up my kids from the school and still the locksmith did not show up. I called him again to check the status, no body answered my phone this time. A few minutes later the owner called me and apologized that he can not make it because he as to do another job and reffered me to another locksmith. I was very angry and I did not wanted to call his locksmith. I talked with my apartment manager office and asked them for help. Short version: Hire Ben if you want a locksmith who knows his stuff, is dedicated to providing quality work, is easy to talk to, and respects you and your property. My old existing hardware turned what should have been a straightforward project into a whole day event and Ben saw it through with flying, shimmering colors. Long version: I purchased 2 high security deadbolts a few years back that have been parked in the closet waiting for their number to be called on the DIY to-do list. While cleaning last week, I decided it was time to hire a professional and just get it done. All the 5 stars on Yelp for GreenKeys caught my attention, because usually there are at least a few lesser ratings. There were two other local locksmiths with high ratings, so I checked out all the websites. Visiting GreenKeys' site gave me the warm fuzzies because of its professional simplicity and the fact that Ben had a company theme song and a video of his "corner office" (which is the landscape flying by as he drives down the highway). I could tell that he had a sense of humor and wasn't going to be one of the usual grumpy old men I tend to encounter when searching for trade professionals. I emailed Ben for an estimate and he gave me a quote with fixed pricing for the service fee and deadbolt installs. For comparison, I called the two other highly-rated locksmiths I found and they gave me ranges of how much it might cost and indeed, both the guys I spoke to sounded grumpy (and on the old side). Ben's estimate was about what the high range of other two locksmiths estimated, but I figured it'd probably end up being at the high end of the scale, so I might as well go with GreenKeys. In hindsight, it was absolutely the best decision. Ben showed up when he said he would and we chatted while he got started. He examined both doors and noticed that we had the old strike plates for the doorknobs (not the locks he was going to work on) and that we were missing the center hinge for one of the doors. We had the existing hardware and he offered to install them, even though they were unrelated to the job he was there to do. He showed me the features on our fancy new high security deadbolts that I was unaware of and explained their purposes. He obviously has passion for what he does and you gotta love someone who gets geeky about their trade. Once he started removing the strike plates, he discovered that they were some bizarre type that were embedded into the frame and ran into a continuation of unexpected issues (due to our hardware and older house) that could not possibly have been foreseen. What probably should have been a 2 1/2 hour job ended up being a 7 1/2-hour event, but Ben performed the installs diligently and meticulously and thoroughly cleaned up after himself. And when it was time to collect payment, he was willing to honor his original quote! Unbelievable. I only wish I knew of a "Ben" for every other type of service professional / contractor I need. So you should hire Ben because he has an outstanding work ethic and isn't a crotchety old man. read more
