    Hot Jane Bagel Sandwich

Traveling for work from LA, a friend brought me here. On their recommendation i ordered the MORNING BERRIES. The flavor was great. It's like an açaí bowl but with oatmeal instead. I loved it. As I was eating I thought (as I do often) that what would make this BETTER would be to swap out the maple syrup for HONEY and the sweet of the honey is a bit sharper to the subtle dull sweet of the maple syrup. Second was the HOT JANE. I'm a spicy lover and this was def spicy. Do not recommend if you can't handle heat. It was a 6/10 for a guy who can handle the heat, so proceed with caution. As is, it was great. I had no thought of modifications at the time of tasting. The staff were really friendly and took compliments well and they seemed proud and that they take pride in their jobs. We had a short convo about the food sourcing and their mission statements. It was a bit cold outside the day we went (Jan) so the metal and concrete of the tables and floors made it seem even colder so I'd take it to go on a winter day and dine in during the spring/summer next time. Happy eating.

Nice friendly service. The sunrise Acai bowl was really tasty but the only complaint I have was that the Acai smoothie part itself was really watery.......would've been better if it were a nice icy smoothie texture that kept its shape. Will definitely try something else next time!

Loved the Peanut butter and chocolate protein drink! The berry drink was also good but not as tasty as the PB protein!

This seems more of a take-out place, so if you are looking to order online + pick up - this is perfect. But they do have tables + chairs! I tried their SUNRISE bowl to take on train (not far at all from here) + it was delicious! It also was a perfect meal to bring onto the train (no smell or mess). Service was fast but wasn't greeted or offered any recommendations/anything when looking at the menu. BONUS POINTS They serve in compostable containers + their huge menu! Also no added sugar YAY!

We got smoothies and green drinks along with a shot of wheat grass.

We are visiting from Florida and found this place and came every morning. Great service and good healthy green drinks.

Really love the juices and shots for a pick me up you really can't go wrong with any of the combinations as they all taste so good. Easy and easy out in a central location!

Healthy juice and smoothies!!! I had the blue mango with protein and it was delicious. Fast service and a perfect spot to go to after a workout.

We were on vacation in Portland and looking for something healthy to eat and this place looked great! We were happy to support a small business as well. The smoothies we got were great and the avocado toast was delicious! The staff was so nice and helpful. Would definitely recommend and will return if we're ever in town again

    Berry Fix

Cute little spot with fresh juices. Location was right next to the gym that I went to, so I decided to try this place out. Variety of juices, smoothies, bowls and salads to choose from plus they even have a menu of add-ons (hemp seeds, chia seeds, almond butter, oats..). I got the Berry Fix and my boyfriend got the Sunnyside. The Berry Fix was delicious! All the ingredients were super fresh, and I could taste it in my smoothie. I tried the Sunnyside smoothie as well and it did not taste good. The ginger was way too overpowering, and I could not taste anything in the smoothie but the ginger. I think this smoothie could be really good if they only put a hint of ginger. Overall - Decent place for fresh smoothies.

Extremely helpful and friendly staff. Excellent menu with a wide variety of selections. We ordered the Green Lemonade, Banana Cacao Chia Bowl, and a t-shirt!!!! As you can tell, we loved the place so much that we bought a permanent reminder!!!

The kind of place where you expect someone to be editing a documentary on a laptop made of recycled aluminum. Late afternoon visit, so the hipster crowd had clearly skateboarded back to their respective creative labs. I had the place to myself. Prime auditing conditions. First impression? This place is built for volume. You can tell. Efficient layout. Assembly-line potential. If bowls were a factory sport, this would be a playoff team. Ordered the Home Grown. Took a quick bathroom break. Came back and -- boom -- bowl was already on the counter. FAST. And it looked elite. Then I saw it. A generous dollop of peanut butter at the top, sprinkled with hemp seeds. I almost got emotional. It felt like flying over your hometown after months away. Familiar. Safe. Right. First bite? Delicious. Smooth. Creamy. Almost like frozen yogurt or soft serve. Easy eating. Crowd-pleasing texture. And then... I looked up. Another bowl was being made. The açaí base was coming out of a soft-serve machine. As a purist, this one hurt. I want hand-scooped. Blender-blade symphony. Crafted, not dispensed. I had a small internal crisis. But here's the problem: I really enjoyed it. So now I'm torn between my values and my taste buds. Would I go back? Yes. Would I wrestle internally again? Also yes. everytime i have carioca bowls, i fall in love with portland even more. the quintessential açai…read morebowl is done with such craft and intentionality here that i can unequivocally say this is the best spot for an açai bowl -- at least in the states and that i know of; though someday i will have to go on an adventure to Brazil, which is where carioca stems from. the açai here is not the sugary type but the real stuff. high quality, fresh ingredients, too. my go-to is the rose city bowl (rio açai, honey mamas chocolate pieces (!!!!!!!), raspberries, banana, cinnamon maca, granola). yum yum! speaking of which, for this gluten free and mostly plant-based human, can we talk about the brazilian bites?!? do yourself a favor and splurge if you can -- one will not be enough. the perfect balance between pillowy and chewy textured with the (in the case of the vegan) vegan cheese ahhhh i've developed a Pavlovian response where i'm salivating. logistics -- street side parking and a cozy seating area with some brazilian beats that define the acoustic ambiance. online ordering is a thing! all in all, food for the soul, friendly folks, and an array of bowls (cold and warm) and smoothies and a breakfast sandwich and avocado toast make this the perfect place for post-workout recovery or in general, a pick-me-up, which is something we all need in today's hustle and bustle. thank you, carioca! i still miss your slabtown spot where i first found you, but i'll happily make the trek!

Ya know, it's weird that this has been in my drafts for forever. But I like this place. I like that…read morethey were down with the açaí bowl situation before it was cool (or at least, before it became de rigeur and/or spread to the damp and drippy PNW). I started chowing down on smoothie bowls in sunny southern California and the majorest of major metros like Manhattan, and it seems like it took forever for the "trend" to spread to our rainy neck of the woods. One could certainly get wheatgrass shots every which where, but smoothie bowls, not so much. ANYWAY, Carioca Bowls was leading the vanguard of delish and genuine açaí bowls in PDX long before it was an expected food variety in all hippie-ish towns in the US. Their bowls meet my exacting ingredient standards: Now that smoothie bowls have gone mainstream, many are just lightly disguised dessert with "health food" marketing: Hidden sweeteners and grody additives pushed on the unsuspecting hoi polloi ruin it for people who don't do their homework. But not Carioca Bowls: You can ACTUALLY get an unsweetened açaí bowl if that's your jam (it's mine: If I wanted dessert, I'd get a cupcake), and they don't drown the top in honey (honey has its place, and that place is far away from me), and drink in the extremely second-wave granola vibes while you're at it. Third-wave hippie food, like third-wave coffee shops, have suffered a loss of soul: Minimalist design, LED lighting, and cookie-cutter staff with vaseline smiles beckoning "welcome in!" with vacant looks in their eyes have sapped a lot of the joy from the spaces serving hippie food and matcha tea. Carioca Bowls remains a comfortingly messy, quirky callback to sincerity: Murals, houseplants, low lighting, a big messy garden-y space outdoors for sitting and chowing, organic unfussy aesthetics that make the whole scene just feel welcoming and comfy. You can eat your bowl here and not feel like you're a nuisance to the staff, or like there's a glaring spotlight on you (unlike SOME smoothie/juice/bowl places I could mention). Nary a whiff of extruded white plastic ANYWHERE in this place. It makes me feel at home, the way a wheatgrass-sniffin', long-hair-havin', big-hug-givin' hippie should feel. When I walk through the door, I feel RELAXED, ya know what I mean? Anyway, give it a try - this isn't my 'hood but I will still occasionally make a pilgrimage just to get a bowl and drink in the vibes. So if I were writing a Michelin guide (buy those tires!) I suppose I'd give this at least a star, as it's worth a special trip (IF you're into what I've described here - it's highly specific, but it's MY vibe). Anyway, long live Carioca Bowls!

Proud Mary in NE Alberta St, Portland…read more I was excited to come back home to Portland and hit up all my favorite spots in this week but I had to choose carefully because I wasn't taking on the Portland food scene alone, I'm bringing a friend with me who has never been to the city at all. I needed to set the bar high from day one. Proud Mary on Alberta Street was my first move, and it provided a light but delicious first meal paired with great espresso drinks. (And I needed to set the bar high for coffee in town because this friend own her own coffee shop in LA) This is the kind of place I bring people to when I want to show off what this city does best a casual environment with interesting food that doesn't take itself too seriously, in a space that just feels right. I went with the oatmeal and a side of hash, (a hash that has such a unique texture that I think about it pretty often now I love a unique potato eperince) but execution of the seasonal flavors in the oatmeal surprise me every time in the best way. They pay so much attention to detail of he flavor and presentation and that makes even humble dishes feel more special. My friend ordered the spring omelette and it was simple, it could have used a bit more flavor or texture or even an additional protien source but it was good non the less. When our cappuccinos arrived first, I remembered this is an Australian-owned café. Served with a dusting of chocolate powder the way an "apparently" proper Aussie capp should be. Both cups were genuinely excellent. For vegetarians, the menu gives you real options with actual thought behind them and of course their are so many dishes with meat that everyone can love, so that's a huge win for me Who it's for: first-time Portland visitors, coffee lovers, anyone who wants a brunch spot that earns its reputation. Strong start to any trip. Veg selection | Flavor execution | Value | Staff knowledge | Ambiance

The food: My recommendations - Yuzu Tsuyu Tsukemen - my first no-soup ramen experience and it didn't disappoint. Got the nontraditional "warm" noodles instead of cold, but with the cold sauce, I thought it was pretty good. Reminds me of other Asian cold noodle dishes (which I typically love) but with the added fun of dipping). Tangy, sweet, savory, saucy. Yuzu Ratan - Their menu highlights a type of ramen that isn't commonly found in the US. The broth has definite citrus flavor from the yuzu, but it also reminded me of beef and tomato. I quite liked the noodles here - thin and very good chew. Quite a unique experience. It's not my favorite style of ramen, but definitely worth trying. Tori Karaage - slight fried texture on the outside and still juicy center. Another dish with yuzu from the sauce. This is a good one! Ota Tofu Yakko - firm tofu, yuzu ponzu sauce, and bonito flakes. The combination is cool and refreshing. The other dishes - Kaisen Don - I thought this dish was fine, but nothing special for the price. 4 pieces of fish with ikura and tobiko. Tonkotsu Shio - flavorful broth, but not very creamy or oily. I tend to like very rich tonkotsu. Crispy Broccolini - oven roasted to the point where the leaves tasted a bit like kale chips. Looking for a different style of ramen? It's worth a stop to Afuri to try their Yuzu Style

I did recently experience something that was really frustrating. I went in to order a to go order, the lady said it was going to be 15 mins but I had a meeting to get to, and I was trying to be a good customer by not rushing them and saying, hey, let me come back to it in about an hour- so no rush! The girl said that wasn't possible. What?? What's the difference if I got it the second it was done vs if I got it a little bit later? She said they only do that for phone orders... ok, can we pretend this is one? Anyways, she was nice enough to ask the kitchen if they can speed it up, which they did. Great right? Now, I don't know if it was out of spite or just truly forgetting but my tsukemen (noodles you dip in sauce) didn't have the tare (the sauce)- which of course I only find out when I was back home and far away from the restaurant- so it was a really frustrating surprise to come home having just bought $20 + tip noodles that I couldn't really eat since I didn't have any sauce to go with it. I don't think I'm gonna come here again
