Proud Mary in NE Alberta St, Portland I was excited to come back home to Portland and hit up all my favorite spots in this week but I had to choose carefully because I wasn't taking on the Portland food scene alone, I'm bringing a friend with me who has never been to the city at all. I needed to set the bar high from day one. Proud Mary on Alberta Street was my first move, and it provided a light but delicious first meal paired with great espresso drinks. (And I needed to set the bar high for coffee in town because this friend own her own coffee shop in LA) This is the kind of place I bring people to when I want to show off what this city does best a casual environment with interesting food that doesn't take itself too seriously, in a space that just feels right. I went with the oatmeal and a side of hash, (a hash that has such a unique texture that I think about it pretty often now I love a unique potato eperince) but execution of the seasonal flavors in the oatmeal surprise me every time in the best way. They pay so much attention to detail of he flavor and presentation and that makes even humble dishes feel more special. My friend ordered the spring omelette and it was simple, it could have used a bit more flavor or texture or even an additional protien source but it was good non the less. When our cappuccinos arrived first, I remembered this is an Australian-owned café. Served with a dusting of chocolate powder the way an "apparently" proper Aussie capp should be. Both cups were genuinely excellent. For vegetarians, the menu gives you real options with actual thought behind them and of course their are so many dishes with meat that everyone can love, so that's a huge win for me Who it's for: first-time Portland visitors, coffee lovers, anyone who wants a brunch spot that earns its reputation. The flat white was nicely done. It was creamy and well balanced. Latte art speaks for itself. I came here because I was interested in their geisha pour overs and potentially buy a bag but they didn't have most of the beans available for sell. I had the bambito geisha. The flavor profile was a bit too acidic for me. Also didn't taste like the usual geisha I like. Cute place and great service. Can't believe I haven't written a review about Proud Mary Coffee because I have definitely been more than once; aka it will bring you back :P My first experience was...foolishly after a night shift where I had a latte and couldn't get my eyes to close whatsoever l o l the fault was clearly on my end, but hey you know their coffee will give you energy and keep you up! :P The ricotta hotcakes are a fave and I have been back to have a variety of their dishes including omelets, breakfast burrito/wraps, and avocado toast. Also cannot forget about their pastry case where they have some insanely tasty goods! I finally had the chance to dine in recently and service was friendly, helpful, and swift. Fair warning you may have shared seating if it gets too crowded inside, but it's doesn't feel too packed even if you are at shared seating. The bar is also beautiful and cozy. The coffee is delicious and I definitely need to go back to try the matcha! All in all, this is a great spot for coffee, matcha, pastries, or a delicious breakfast/brunch. We absolutely loved this place!! Not only is the coffee super amazing - must get their flat white, but also their breakfast is just as delectable! We both really enjoyed the spring omelette. It was refreshing, light, and bursting with flavor. The ricotta pancakes were too sweet for me - but that's personal taste since I tend to eat very lightly sweetened things. Loved this place. A little loud. A little brash. A lot of character. The folks here serve a mean coffee. And by me I mean fantastic. You don't need creamer, you don't need sugar. Just sip it the way it was meant to be, dark, Moody and full body. Unfortunately there's only street parking and it is monitored by parking enforcement. One of the best brunch experiences I've had in Portland! Just look at the plating of these beautiful dishes! And they're just as delicious as they look. When we came in at 1:30 on a Sunday there was maybe a 15 minute wait which wasn't too bad. The space is quite large inside, despite how small and hidden the cafe is from the outside. Our server was nice and gave us a lot of time to look over the menu. Everything we had was easy to share family style. For me the standouts were the Bombay omelette - wow I think my favorite way omelette has ever been prepared! Loved the burst of mango chutney sauce blended with other savory elements like paneer and potatoes. The ricotta hotcake was divine as well, loved the presentation of it and every bite was packed with flavor. Would I recommend Proud Mary coffee? Hands-down, resoundingly yes! This was one of the highlights of our trip to Portland over Thanksgiving break. It was our very last morning and we were heading out right after breakfast and I wish we had tried this place earlier because I would've come back. We got there pretty soon after they open and we're sat right away. This was black Friday. We all ordered something different. I have the London fog and it was fabulous and the oatmeal and it was unexpectedly amazing. Each one of us in our party of six got something different and we were all blown away. Not only was the food and drink superb but the service and the way the staff work together was impeccable. Cool music and a chill vibe even though by the time we left, there were tons of people waiting to get in and tons of people inside waiting for seats or to go orders. Parking is street parking so the earlier you go the better chance you will have of getting a close spot. read more

Coffee and breakfast, what can go wrong? This is a nice little place, open dining area with lots of tables but not too noisy. Staff was all pleasant and friendly. Food is varied and very good. Coffee drinks were excellent. There is outside seating available and a coffee window to the sidewalk. I had a sausage roll, which was delicious, and comes with a small salad. We waited a few minutes to be seated. The kitchen was not rocket fast, but quality was outstanding, can't rush that! read more

Everything service, ambience and food was delightful. Things you should know: I. PARKING Free street parking is available off Alberta street. II. SERVICE You could either order to-go at the coffee bar window or go with their indoor dining experience. I really enjoyed that they allow you to smell their specialty coffee mixes before they brew. III. QUALITY Everything is made with care. I recommend trying more than one drip coffee to palatably taste the differences. The food is made from fresh ingredients and plated esthetically as well. You get what you pay for here. IV. CAPACITY For 9:30, on at Saturday, we were seated right away without a wait. I don't know if we just got lucky, but this place seems packed on the weekends. What an amazing place. We arrived at noon on a Sunday and had a 30 min wait. We were starving so we shared one the sausage pastries. OMG! So good! It's in such an artsy area we walked around to kill time so waiting went quickly. I really wanted the pulled pork Sando, but they were out. So i got the potato pork butt hash. It was so delicious with many different complimentary flavors. Dill, a special anchovy sauce, kale, poached egg, and smoky pork butt. We also shared the hotcake which was literally like a dessert!!! I was invited by a friend to join for lunch and I have to say I am pleasantly surprised. I really like the atmosphere and the friendly service that is around. They know their stuff and serve you with a smile. The menu is absolutely not what I had expected. It has a large influence of Mediterranean and everything they serve looked really good. TL:DR Delightfully Piquant food with pleasant surroundings. Portland has no shortage of delicious food in the area and this brunch cafe spot again is no small exception. When we arrived it was busy but they did have seating available at the bar for two, which we were seated immediately for. They also have a separate take out window for to go orders, make sure to go inside if you wish to have a sit down. I feel spoiled moving to a city where there is so much diversity and delicious food, the dish I had was the bacon hash, but there is a twist the sauce is anchovy based and the "bacon" is a thick slice of pork belly which melted in your mouth. As always my wife did an equally savory dish in the Turkish eggs, she had asked me, "What should I choose between the Turkish eggs or the overnight oats and I told her when are you going to be in a place to order Turkish eggs again?" Needless to say there was such a wonderful symphony of different flavors and the pastry served along with it complimented it quite well. I do want to follow with a disclaimer, I tend to try not to be a harsh reviewer because the time and effort it takes to run a restaurant is quite chaotic and challenging especially places that serve delicious food and people realize it. This place was busy on a Saturday morning and if you do have a party larger than 2 expect to wait to be seated, the food also will take time to prepare it is deluxe, but for me well worth the wait. And as long as the servers and staff don't literally spit in my face, food or even yell at me the service is always quite amicable. I do look forward to trying many delicious restaurants in the Portland area, but do expect reviews from me to be as honest and positive as possible. read more

Made it a point to come back here when I visited Portland again and I'm so glad I did. Just as worth it as the first time and I'm really impressed with the coffee prices. With all the turmoil of the past year I was expecting to pay ~$7 for a coffee (and was totally fine with that) but I got a QUALITY flat white for $5 which was well, well worth it. But, what really impressed me, was that they had updated their menu to give their signature dishes a new twist. I was going to get something other than the hotcakes because I've had it but when I saw the updated description it was a no brainer to try them again. Just as delicious as last year, but totally different flavor profile which made my tummy so happy. Amazing way to keep things fresh and fun for your customers while still keeping the favorites. I cannot figure out why this place is so amazing - the quality of ingredients the amount of butter they go through maybe. Excellent breakfast place for quaint experience. However, I am guilty of regularly ordering their two egg on sourdough toast and jam. I absolutely adore their jam. Never had a bad egg here either which is impressive for the number of times I've ordered delivery from here. This is one of the only places I can't resist ordering their bacon and they give you an option of how you want it cooked which is rare around these parts. The baked goods are also really good as well as the many fresh items on the menu like the salmon. They also don't play when it comes to baked goods and coffee - really amazing drinks. I do like the coffee especially the pour over. I think they are professional and know what they are doing. However, when I came back for the second time, they blasted their music and you can tell the staff really enjoying the music because they are singing on the top of their lungs with the music. I'll not stress how important hearing health is to human but I did request them to turn down the volume a little bit. The staff replied: ok we will see what happens. You know that's code for: not gonna happen. And you guessed: it didn't happen, music was still way too loud in my face. We got picked up from the airport and couldn't find a breakfast/coffee spot that would have yummy breakfast foods to accommodate my gluten-free friend near the airport, so we used yelp and found this place. Super busy and super hip. But excellent food and great service. I ordered the pour over coffee and not only did it come out Perfectly curated, but I received a card with information about the farmers and the type of coffee. Super fancy and I loved that. From checking in, to being seated, and closing out their service at Proud Mary's was amazing. On Saturday we checked in around 11am. The front reception estimated a 20-25 minute wait for our party of 5 and our table was ready right at 20 minutes. Our server was incredibly kind and made suggestions since it was the first time our group has eaten at Proud Mary's. Orders were placed for drinks and food. Our drinks came out promptly and our food not too long after. Everything was beautifully presented, and the flavors of everything were delicious. Our server checked in multiple times. It's not often that a TikTok recommendation (I know, I know) actually lives up to the hype, but I think I found the spot. Owners Nolan and Shari Hirte did an incredible job designing the space. Skylights pour in soft natural light, and the design blends urban edge with earthy warmth creating a beautiful spot. The ceramic dishware is a thoughtful touch that gives the whole experience a more refined, almost fine-dining feel. The food? Amazing. And super accommodating for allergies. I have an egg and nut allergy, so brunch is usually a nightmare for me but here, I had plenty of options. The staff knew the menu well and were happy to help. I ordered the hash, swapped the egg for avocado, and it was a 10/10. Filling, healthy, and seriously delicious. Highly recommend for everyone, even families. I noticed a sweet little kid-friendly corner with toys you can easily bring back to your table. I came here for a large group brunch over the weekend. I ordered the nan jin salmon (menu description: tamarind glazed & fried salmon, green beans, papaya, pickled carrots & butternut squash, bean sprouts, cilantro, Thai basil, fried shallot, spicy Nam Jim dressing) and the kermit green juice (Kale, cucumber, green apple, celery, & lemon). While the restaurant was bustling, the drinks and food came out at a decent pace. Everyone received their food around the same time also. I did not love my meal. I think it was missing something. It was about 5 pieces of salmon over a bed of cold vegetables. A scoop of black or wild rice would have been nice. Maybe the intention was for it to be more like a salad; if so, maybe add some type of greens and serve in a bowl instead. It didn't feel cohesive, and became a little boring after I finished the salmon. I did not finish all the cold and pickled veggies. The juice, on the other hand, was delicious. I drank it way too fast! Finally, our server (and other servers who stopped by with drinks and food) was attentive and friendly. She even broke up all the checks by going around the table and running cards separately for items ordered (I think it was at one of the table member's request). Mary.. You should be Proud that your coffee is top tier great. If you're into single origin, estate type coffee beans, Proud Mary, offers high quality coffee beans they roast from Central and South Americas and Ethiopia. I ordered a pour over flight of 3 different estate Costa Rican coffee beans which were honey processed (method of preparing before drying). They let you sniff the ground samples and each comes with info about the beans and the estate they come from. Each coffee had different notes and significantly different. I also ordered a Geisha coffee from Panama. @ $21, it's one of the most memorable cups of coffee that I've had. The coffee beans are from Mi Finquita, estate coffee farm from Panama. Geisha is a variety of Arabica coffee that is sought out after for specific notes and more tea like rather than coffee. The notes I tasted were jasmine and white peaches. Very good. The Geisha coffee here ranged from $13-$45 / pour. At times, they have access to award winning coffee beans which go for $100-$150 / pour. Secondary to the coffee, the brunch items here are well executed. I still think about that potato hash I ordered. It's shredded string potatoes and fried on one side and folded over. It's topped with this thick smoked pork belly bacon. It's hella thick. Also on top is a green and herb salad. On the side is a pouched egg. This dish sits on a pool of bagna cauda sauce. Bagna cauda sauce is an Italian sauce made up of butter, olive oil, garlic and anchovies. Very savory and buttery. So good. Service here is great. I'm a fan of this place. Great coffee which I took some on the road. I also order online. A must visit. read more

Think Seattle, circa 2015 when everyone sold their home in San Francisco for a million dollars and paid cash for one in Seattle and drove off all the artists. That crowd. Not local. Like former Weiden Kennedy CDs who took all the credit for your work and thought you should be grateful for the job you slaved at but did it just cause you want to put it on your resume... but cried every time you left a meeting, knowing full well it wasn't their work to begin with.
