everytime i have carioca bowls, i fall in love with portland even more. the quintessential açai bowl is done with such craft and intentionality here that i can unequivocally say this is the best spot for an açai bowl -- at least in the states and that i know of; though someday i will have to go on an adventure to Brazil, which is where carioca stems from. the açai here is not the sugary type but the real stuff. high quality, fresh ingredients, too. my go-to is the rose city bowl (rio açai, honey mamas chocolate pieces (!!!!!!!), raspberries, banana, cinnamon maca, granola). yum yum! speaking of which, for this gluten free and mostly plant-based human, can we talk about the brazilian bites?!? do yourself a favor and splurge if you can -- one will not be enough. the perfect balance between pillowy and chewy textured with the (in the case of the vegan) vegan cheese ahhhh i've developed a Pavlovian response where i'm salivating. logistics -- street side parking and a cozy seating area with some brazilian beats that define the acoustic ambiance. online ordering is a thing! all in all, food for the soul, friendly folks, and an array of bowls (cold and warm) and smoothies and a breakfast sandwich and avocado toast make this the perfect place for post-workout recovery or in general, a pick-me-up, which is something we all need in today's hustle and bustle. thank you, carioca! i still miss your slabtown spot where i first found you, but i'll happily make the trek! read more

Ya know, it's weird that this has been in my drafts for forever. But I like this place. I like that they were down with the açaí bowl situation before it was cool (or at least, before it became de rigeur and/or spread to the damp and drippy PNW). I started chowing down on smoothie bowls in sunny southern California and the majorest of major metros like Manhattan, and it seems like it took forever for the "trend" to spread to our rainy neck of the woods. One could certainly get wheatgrass shots every which where, but smoothie bowls, not so much. ANYWAY, Carioca Bowls was leading the vanguard of delish and genuine açaí bowls in PDX long before it was an expected food variety in all hippie-ish towns in the US. Their bowls meet my exacting ingredient standards: Now that smoothie bowls have gone mainstream, many are just lightly disguised dessert with "health food" marketing: Hidden sweeteners and grody additives pushed on the unsuspecting hoi polloi ruin it for people who don't do their homework. But not Carioca Bowls: You can ACTUALLY get an unsweetened açaí bowl if that's your jam (it's mine: If I wanted dessert, I'd get a cupcake), and they don't drown the top in honey (honey has its place, and that place is far away from me), and drink in the extremely second-wave granola vibes while you're at it. Third-wave hippie food, like third-wave coffee shops, have suffered a loss of soul: Minimalist design, LED lighting, and cookie-cutter staff with vaseline smiles beckoning "welcome in!" with vacant looks in their eyes have sapped a lot of the joy from the spaces serving hippie food and matcha tea. Carioca Bowls remains a comfortingly messy, quirky callback to sincerity: Murals, houseplants, low lighting, a big messy garden-y space outdoors for sitting and chowing, organic unfussy aesthetics that make the whole scene just feel welcoming and comfy. You can eat your bowl here and not feel like you're a nuisance to the staff, or like there's a glaring spotlight on you (unlike SOME smoothie/juice/bowl places I could mention). Nary a whiff of extruded white plastic ANYWHERE in this place. It makes me feel at home, the way a wheatgrass-sniffin', long-hair-havin', big-hug-givin' hippie should feel. When I walk through the door, I feel RELAXED, ya know what I mean? Anyway, give it a try - this isn't my 'hood but I will still occasionally make a pilgrimage just to get a bowl and drink in the vibes. So if I were writing a Michelin guide (buy those tires!) I suppose I'd give this at least a star, as it's worth a special trip (IF you're into what I've described here - it's highly specific, but it's MY vibe). Anyway, long live Carioca Bowls! read more

Açaí bowls are new to me, so I don't have anything to compare this place's to, but I enjoyed it! It's a bowl of fresh fruits and grains along with frozen mashed açaí, which is a tropical fruit popular in Brazil. The açaí has a tart, berryish flavor and in recent years has acquired an international reputation as a superfood. I'm sure it's healthy but is it worth importing a tropical fruit rather than eating blueberries that grow around here? I doubt it, but if you want to eat açaí bowls this seems to be the place. There's much more seating outside (which is perfect for the summer and sunnier days, although not the best for rainy days), however, there's still plenty of seating inside too! The cafe is brightly colored and gives off a very fun, casual vibe. The first time I went, I made my own bowl. However, after trying my friends' already curated bowls (ie. the carioca), I decided to do the same when I went my second time--and I highly recommend doing the same if you don't have any strong preference. The pre-curated bowls are so filling. They have great portions and the toppings match so well with the blends they provide. I loved all the toppings and the different blends they offered. I'm a fan of this shop and have been for years, as you can see by previous review from 3 years ago. They do açai bowls right and the location is pretty neat too. I stopped by recently for their 7th anniversary - they were giving out free bowls to the first 25 people in line that day and doing discounts and giveaways all day. They post promotions like this on occasion on their social media - worth following to find out what they've got going on. My go-to order has changed since I last left a review, and my appreciation for açaí has grown, though the toppings are still delicious. I usually now go for their signature Carioca bowl. If it's good enough to be named after the place, or vice versa, then it's good enough for me. Like most things, costs have increased over the years. Right now their "medio" size bowls range from $10-12, and the "grande" size from $13-15. I also really enjoy their Brazilian cheese bread. It's only $1.50 for one, or $8 for six. They have a second location in Slabtown, but I've only been to this Alberta St location. I still find it as charming as ever, with the many plants and the great outdoor seating. read more

We were HUNGRY....and ended up waiting an hour and a half to get our bowls. Poor girls. There were only 2 workers and we went behind this couple who ordered everything on the menu basically. It was like a $100+ order. After the couple got their order...one of them dropped it...DROPPED IT. So guess what the girls had to do? Remake the order. We waited...and waited. When we finally got our bowls, the girl apologized and said we could get a discount on our next visit. The bowls were delicious and fresh...but there should be a different method to help the employees and be able to serve customers. The texture of the cheese breads were a surprise to me. I was imagining it being similar to a cheese bagel, but this one was almost like a mochi/Vietnamese honeycomb cake. I tried the traditional and vegan breads. I really liked it! The vegan one had an Indian flavor to it.
