In the month that I have lived in Bristol Greer's is the best "find" so far (find is in quotations due to me actually discovering it the first night I was here via yelp). The have the best wings I've encountered (although some coworkers have given me some homework on that front), their baked beans are unbelievably good (I don't typically eat beans and I find myself craving these), and their chicken fried, nuggets, and chunks is excellent. It is really good food, very decently priced, big portions, great and polite service and the complete experience is very welcoming, if you are interested in food only. Some might say its more expensive than chain restaurants, but the quality and quantity makes for it. If you are looking for a diner to sit down and have food, this ain't your place. Ordered takeout on a Friday night- quick prompt service. The chicken was cooked to order which was a bonus. Price was very reasonable. Did not personally care for the fried chicken, the pieces were incredibly tiny and lacking flavor/ seasoning. I suppose some people would appreciate it more. The baked beans were disgustingly sweet, the coleslaw was good, very finely chopped, as were the onion rings, however they put them in Chinese takeout containers meaning you do not get a lot (at all). Been here 2 or there 3 times since I found out about it.. I really really really want to give it 5 starts, honest. BEST fried chicken and salads/ect in the area. If you're thinking KFC or any other big chain place, FORGET IT.. Stop at Greer's. There is no place to eat, so you have to take it out, it's a bit cramped in the ordering area (so once you know the menu, call in your order) And those are the 2 reasons for the no 5 star. read more

Been a while since I'd been to Greer's so last night I ordered delivery. Just on a hunch I went to their website and saw that they do in fact offer delivery. The temptation was far too much for me not to order. Girl on the phone was awesome. Very clear and friendly. Got the order correct on the first try.The delivery guy was fantastic. Came within the specified delivery time which was nice so everything was still warm when it arrived. Again, very friendly and professional. The food we ordered was the standard 8 piece chicken, Some fried clam strips. Two Harvest Bakery rolls and a fish sandwich. The chicken was all excellent except for the breast which was a bit on the dry side but still had a good flavor. The clam strips were outstanding and not greasy in the least. Cooked perfectly. Rolls were fresh and soft and the fish sandwich was made really well and it was on a really good quality roll. Not much more I could ask for. All that food came to $35 with tip.Not all that bad considering how expensive the other chain chicken restaurants are. Reason for not giving 5 stars are mainly because of the chicken breasts. They were very dry and not juicy at all. And the batter still lacks a little crispiness and flavor in my opinion. Other than that everything was great. I was not raised in Bristol, so it took yelp for me to find this great little hole in the wall!! I was in the mood for fried chicken, and our local KFC is FILTHY and not run well, so I found this little spot RIGHT AROUND THE CORNER. Allllll the chicken is amazing (Fried, Rotisserie, chunks, you name it, they've got it!!!) ....in any case, lots of sweet high school kids running the show. It's clean, albeit, tiny and they offer delivery as well. There is nothing that I can find wrong with this spot. It's clean, friendly and the sides are the greatest. I love, love, love the veggie macaroni salad. They have plenty of beverage selections, local honey and eggs and some amazing desserts from Harvest Bakery. check it out if you are new to town, or born and raised here. They have picnic tables outside for these gorgeous Fall days!!!! You can't go wrong, the prices are right .....only drawback is they are closed on Mondays, LOL. I read that this place was voted best fried chicken in ct so i had to try it! Place is a little dive but sometimes thats where u find the best food! The chicken tasted extremely fresh and good quality but it wasnt great. The coating seemed to have no spices except salt. Too much salt! This fresh chicken with a good batter would be a grand slam .The pasta salad with chunks of chicken in it was great, as was the cole slaw. Ordered for many years with no issues. I recently called to report receiving the wrong order (same issue happened the last time ordering also and didn't report that time) and the employee advised they'd send out the correct order. The wrong order then is delivered again. I call to advise that its not necessary to come back out but I received the wrong order twice. The female manager blamed it on the staff member told me I just received double the amount of food (not what i ordered) and then hung up on me. Had an absolute craving for fried chicken yesterday around 7ish, so i googled "great fried chicken in CT" and a place in plainville came up, then i went to their website and they had closed down. Then Greer's was next on the list, i called them, their website said they were open until 8 but the phone just rang & rang, so it was either get in the car and drive to West Hartford for Popeye's (which is pretty good for mass produced fried chicken) or eat the healthy food I had in the house. I chose the latter. But today is another day, i mapquested Greer's, and off I went. It is in a strange place, which is good, they prolly don't get much drive - by traffic, it's more like word of mouth...........and there are a lot of people who have gotten that word! I got there and it took 10 minutes to put in my order and another 10 or so before I had my food ............ not a problem at all, it was busy, and busy is a good thing! People came in to pick up take - out orders and it was a very friendly wait. I ordered 1 breast, 4 thighs and a drumstick, but they were out of breasts so instead I added 2 more drummies and 2 wings. Not a huge fan of breasts (well i mean on chickens!) they tend to dry out, but thighs are easily my fave piece. They packed my chicken into a box, and a 1/2 pint of baked beans and I sped the 8.1 miles home. I got home, put 2 thighs, a drummie and a wing on a plate and some ketchup which i think goes great on fried chicken, though your opinion may differ on that, and it was wonderful, and grease - free! The baked beans were good, albeit very sweet, but that's easily remedied with some hot sauce. I could tell it's a family - run place too, which makes it all that much better. There is nothing fancy or pretentious about the place. They are local, community oriented and perfect in the area that maters most - the food. Wow. Five stars for both the food and the local color. This is a tiny shack off the beaten track in Bristol that looks like it's hardly changed from when they first opened, which seems like it was 30 or 40 years ago. We had the mandatory fried chicken (really the only reason one would come here), along with the best jalapeno poppers I've ever had, along with an array of sides including cole slaw, macaroni salad and baked beans, all of which were superb. We also bought some very good rolls and a jar of local raw honey. The staff seemed to be primarily local high school girls but they work together well in their cramped, narrow confines to deliver reasonably quick and friendly service. Best chicken around!!! Nice and crispy not too greasy. I always get the drumsticks. I have gotten the boneless chicken chunks a few times but found them to be very dry. The sides are my favorite. They are the main reason I go there as I am not a huge meat person. I always get the baked beans, chicken mac salad, and potato salad. They are all amazing! The rolls are good too. They're from Harvest Bakery. Prices are really good. I would definitely call ahead because they tend to be busy and if you walk in you might have to wait awhile. holy smokes, best fried chicken in CT, hands down. literally a shack that churns out hundreds of pounds of chicken every hour (probably). don't order nuggets for the kids though, instead get the chicken chunks. not knocking the nuggets, but the chunks were great too. the fries are good, cole slaw rules, and the chicken stays crunchy on the drive home, if it makes it all the way home. be prepared to wait on weekends, it's jam-packed with patrons waiting for pickup. read more

We have been searching for real Southern fried chicken in Connecticut for almost five years. Having lived in North Carolina for several years, I had almost forgotten what it tasted like. Our search is over. We started off with the 8 piece Southern fried chicken; the skin was crispy and delicious and held to the chicken very well. A lot of other fast food chicken joints rely on herbs and spices for flavor, so I was surprised that the breading was lightly flavored, and thought I would be disappointed. Here's what really made Greer's great: the chicken tasted like chicken! It tasted incredibly fresh and "chicken-y". Really, it made all the difference. The dark meat was perfectly cooked, juicy and not at all greasy. I found the white meat a bit dry, but we had to travel a bit to get the food home, so I'm reserving judgement until our next visit. The mashed potatoes were among the best I've ever had in a restaurant, they looked, smelled and tasted like Grandma's potatoes, not like styrofoam and mush. The gravy was ever better, I'm ordering an extra side of gravy next time. If you aren't in Bristol, it might take awhile to get dinner home, but even after sitting in rush hour traffic, our dinner was still hot on the plate. I had leftovers today, and because the chicken wasn't greasy and the breading done just right, it may be the best cold fried chicken I've ever had. Everything was reasonably priced, exceptional for the quality of the food. The staff was very alert, took our order quickly and served it almost as fast. Greer's is a small mom and pop establishment hidden away in an otherwise residential neighborhood. Everything is made fresh to order and served piping hot. Just ok and that's being generous. It seems like a place the locals like. The fried chicken was blah. Missing something like a hint of pepper or spice...not sure. I found this place on yelp! If it wasn't for that I prob would have never knew about it. But I'm glad I did! The chicken is actually really good I have no complaints. I had the baffalo chicken chunks and the wings and they were both delicious and cooked to perfection. I also tried there cheesecake and it was ok (not the best but will do). Great food here. What I loved the most was their fried pickles best I ever had its a must try when you go here. Their prices are not bad you can go here with $20 and easily get a meal for 2. Service is great especially with the amount of customers that I saw. Waiting only 15 minutes was awesome. This place is a take out restaurant. They do take credit cards if you don't have cash on you. We had a craving for fried chicken and saw this place was well-rated. A bit out of the way, but the drive was worth it. Very good fried chicken with a nice, crispy, thin batter.
