I love trying new things and was excited to stop by Gregoire. Their menu sounded well rounded and full of delicious items. Unfortunately I left disappointed. I went there with my mother and we both ordered the Lamb Shank Pie. I also ordered the much talked about potato puffs and Mom got the Gingerbread Cake. We'll start with the Lamb Shank Pie. When you read the word "pie" it evokes memories of buttery flaky pastry stuffed with steaming hot ingredients, oozing out with each forkful. Instead, we received a take on pie that is barely reminiscent. Two triangles of phyllo dough topped with thin strips of lambs topped and diced walnuts. This might sound good, but it was nothing to scream about. The phyllo dough was dense, crumbly and overcooked. The lamb was dry, lukewarm, tough and without much flavor. The only things things that made it edible were the zesty sauce that was basted on the dough and the diced walnuts. If you're going to put pie on your menu it better be pie. If it's not pie, it better blow my socks off so that I overlook it. Overdone puff pastry topped with tough meat does not a pie make. Ok enough about pies, let's move on! The potato puffs were good, but not great. I give them many points for creativity, but at the end of the day, you're just eating mashed potatoes in a ball. The dipping sauce that came with it was thick, spicy and flavorful. It reminded me of eating steak and mashed potatoes, which I enjoyed! I could slather that sauce on everything. The Gingerbread Cake came out piping hot (top marks for that, I love hot dessert). It was scrumptious! It had a spicy bite that only comes with using fresh ginger and it wasn't overpowering. It was moist, hot and just enough. The cake also came with a side of weird butter or cream cheese topping that we didn't use, because it destroyed the good flavor. If I ever go back to Gregoire, it would be to get that cake (provided it comes on menu again). Gregoire is ambitious with it's menu, but it didn't deliver with technique or flavor. read more

Those who have sampled French food would not mistake Gregoire as a French food restaurant. I am sure it is easy to be seduced by the accent of the chef, but that's no excuse for naivete. I have to say that I am astounded at the unfounded popularity of this overpriced, picnic-tabled establishment. From living in a variety of Californian cities, I realize that Berkeley residents know neither the privilege of quality, fairly priced restaurants, nor the delicacy of gracious service, but this is the ultimate display of suckered yuppie culture. I cannot fathom relinquishing another $15.00 to eat a la carte, mediocre morsels out of a carboard saucer, at a facility with no lavatories or table service and the giddy pretense of a Hollywood spa. In a virtually chefless town, does the presence of a surly foreign chef help one to feel smug? As far as Gregoire is concerned, my advice is to save your disposable income and take a drive to another locale where you may discover a standard of dining demonstrating that today's "gourmet ghetto" is a myth. read more

Always amazing, never fails to delight me. Gregoire is a small shop, but they turn out some genuinely delicious French gourmet food from their humble little stand. The menu changes every month, meaning there's always something new to try. I've tried chicken, beef, lamb, and salmon from different months; impressed every time, no matter what the dish. Also, if you are a person who doesn't typically order sides, you should make an exception and order some of their potato dishes (potato puffs are excellent, and the Potato Gratin is a personal favorite of mine); its one of the most worthwhile side dishes you'll ever order in your life (yeah, listen to the university student who's only lived in 2 cities in his life. but hey, they were good, ok?). Also, their wine soda is quite good and goes well with their food. A bit on the pricey side, but hey, you get what you pay for. I don't mind forking over a little more change for some quality Berkeley fare. read more

Hmm Hmm Hmm! The scallop and bacon sandwich was awesome! I always thought gregoire's was a little bit overpriced and overrated. I used to get the buttermilk chicken and it didn't really impress me. However, the scallop and bacon sandwich this month was well worth the price! :D The scallop was very fresh and well cooked and the bacon really went well with the scallop. Crispy potato puffs are so creamy they will melt in your mouth. :) However, I always feel like I could make it at home pretty easily... Maybe not :p 4.50 for the hassle of blending the potato and frying? Maybe worth it. Small place, but they definitely have people who know how to cook. :D Make sure to call at least 15 minutes ahead and make an order if you don't want to wait standing in front of the restaurant for 15-20minutes. After hearing so much about their potato puffs, I had to swing by to see for myself when I got the chance. It was surely worth it. They were really good! As some have said, they're basically fried mashed potato balls. But, they're still tasty. An order is about $5 and it comes with about ten balls with a dijon mustard, creamy dipping sauce. I actually didn't like the sauce with the crispy balls. The sauce totally masks the great taste of the balls. So, I didn't eat it with the sauce. By itself, you can taste all the potato flavor and appreciate the crispy skin. The other items on the menu look good. I'll definitely come back the next time I'm in town. The only bad thing about the place is that it's basically a take-out stand. Don't expect to find a spot to eat there. There are only two small tables outside and a few chairs inside next to their counter. read more

Gregoire's is such a great spot for a quick and satisfying bite! I met up with a friend here to catch up, and we grabbed a table outside right next to the small restaurant and it made for a really nice, casual hangout. I ordered the potato puffs and the fried chicken sandwich, and both were super satisfying. The chicken sandwich had that perfect crunch on the outside while staying juicy and moist on the inside. The spicy coleslaw was heavenly and had the right amount of kick to it. But honestly, the potato puffs were the star, as they were crispy, flavorful, and paired so well with the sauce. I could've easily eaten more of those! The portions are generous, the staff are friendly, and the food came out really fast, which is always a plus. Definitely a solid go to if you're looking for something quick, delicious, and comforting. read more

Two stars, but I hope that goes up with the next try. Super convenient to where I am so I want to like it. Order: Lamb chops and potato puffs Thoughts: Overpriced, ill seasoned, and not a good value. Lamb chops: Medium rare meant medium well. Mostly fat ( If you price it out by bite, each was about $2.50). Served with a side of undercooked squash and some separating dill/cucumber/cheese concoction that (my boyfriend thought) worked better with the potato puffs. Potato Puffs: Pleasantly surprised at the texture and spices. Counter balanced by the abundance of salt and ill flavors of the accompanying dipping sauce. I'll try this place again, maybe two more time since it is so convenient to where I live. But, there you go. Round one. Two stars. read more

I've been eating here since they opened, and I've had wonderful meals here. But lately the service has been so rude, both at the counter and over the phone. This has not been my experience until lately when a new guy has been taking the orders. I see that another recent reviewer has also had the same experience. Come on Gregoire, get it together! I realize you're insanely popular now and you're not hurting of business, but it's still disappointing to have such an inhospitable experience. If this guy doesn't want to be serving customers, get him to do something else and find someone who will be at least pleasant to people. read more

When I asked if Gregoire was around on the phone later, and ask when he would be in he said he had no idea lol. Then he asked why I was calling. When I said it's none of your business it's between me and him he screamed I have no manners and he was hanging up on me haha. Gregoire never disappoints me! Came here again with a couple of friends today and got their lamb sandwich. The wait was about 10 min for the food since we went around lunch time, but I have to say, it was worth the wait! My bread was toasted just right. There was a lot of butter, but it tasted delicious! The content included sweet potato and roasted lamb. It was just amazing. Definitely made my day. We also tried their dessert - Rhubarb mousse, kiwi coulis. Definitely one of my favorite places in Berkeley. Since the entrees change every month, it's tough to get into the specifics of favorite dishes (there's always a variety of great sandwiches on the menu and the potato puffs are a must try and always available). With that said, Gregoire offers high quality food and extremely reasonable prices. If you live in or visit Berkeley with any frequency, odds are you've already been here and loved it. If you're visiting or new to the area I would bookmark Gregoire as a destination spot for lunch. read more

came here for the first time and ordered the lamb. truly top notch food. if i'd never seen the place before tasting the food, i would never have thought that it could come from such an unsophisticated kitchen setup. would definitely come back often. although i would agree with the one reviewer here about the presentation -- paying $25 for food in a cardboard box IS wrong. the fried chicken sandwhich is outstanding, the potato puffs are legendary and they always have some soup of the day which smells so good i have to get it. Yeah Gregoire's is simply perfect, well except for the price. In reality if I'm going to drop 25-30 dollars on some lamb or steak i don't want to sit in a little take out spot. Everybody has already written so many reviews and mentioned the fantastic potato puffs, and the lamb dishes, and the fact that the menu changes monthly, so let me simply say that whenever anyone comes from out-of-town for a visit, I always buy some take-out from Gregoire. It's simply one of the most divine eating experiences of my life. Since the menu changes monthly, most items come and go, or perhaps only appear once, but the delicious potato puffs are always on the menu. Eat them right away, while they're hot. Of the items that reappear periodically, my all-time favorite is the braised pork shoulder, and I particularly like the lamb chops, beef bavette, the truffle oil egg salad on homemade pita chips, the occasional Maine lobster special, and some of the scallop dishes. read more

I have very rarely experienced a restaurant with such consistently good food despite the frequent menu changes. Their menu changes once a month, utilizing only the freshest of seasonal ingredients. When I am out in the area, I never fail to stop by. They never dissapoint. Definitely try out the Potatoe Puffs when you're there! Even though I was one of the ones who ended up with food poisoning after eating here a week and a half ago, I will still return to this restaurant! I've eaten at this location many times over the past two years and never had an issue. People make mistakes and as long as they work to correct them, then I'll come back!
