Greg has cared for two Eurovan's for me over the past couple of years. He knows them well and it shows. I appreciate the proper treatment of my vans, not jacked off the ground off the jack point (which creases the frame of these vans), removing the engine guard to service (while others just bend to access filters), advising the best preventative maintenance (cabin air filter or transmission oil). I recently bought a used Jetta, against all sane recommendations to avoid VW's. I ignored that advice, but luckily did not ignore the advice of my roommate and his family to take the car to Greg's. At first, I resisted, since it's quite a trek, but when I started experiencing jerky shifting issues and didn't trust the Jeep dealer where I bought it to know what was wrong, I realized I needed to take it to a shop that knew VW's. I haven't had my car back long enough to know if it still has issues, but after being told at Aamco that the transmission was shot and by my dealer that there was no problem at all, I realized I needed an opinion from someone who actually knew what he was talking about. Enter Greg, the "Volkswagen genius." His solution was to try new fluid and an air filter. He explained that changing the fluid is costly, but will also give him a chance to open the pan and see if there were any clutch bits or other noticeable problems with the transmission. Just from the way they explained things to me, I could tell they know their stuff. I left my car on a Thursday afternoon without an appointment, and they fit me in for the service on the next day. German cars are deliberately confusing and designed to be impossible to diagnose yourself, so I strongly recommend you take your car Greg. I'm going to make the trip to Natick from Somerville, even for oil changes, because I know they are thorough, honest, and will give my car the best car possible. I brought my 1982 VW Diesel Vanagon to Greg in Natick because my local mechanic [in The Berkshires] was too busy to get to it before the beginning of February. Greg worked on it when the prior owner had it, so I thought he might have more insight. I had the van towed to his shop on January 13th, and was told he could get to it in 3 - 4 days. I sent an email message the following day communicating exactly the work I wanted done: 1) figure out why it seems to be going through oil, provide an estimate to fix and do so - and - 2) identify and fix an electrical issue (a monitor for the house battery was going off, and I wasn't sure why). I also suggested he look at the manual created by the prior owner. To make a VERY long story short, he had the vehicle for about a month and a half, and - after paying him $3,682.53 - the van would not start after stopping for gas on the way home from his shop. I then discovered the oil issue is still as bad as when I delivered it, as is the electrical. It is clear these issues were never corrected. I wrote to him the following day - and several times since - asking if he ever did the work he was supposed to, and he has refused to answer. He has refused to communicate in writing at all, which I find quite telling. I told him I wanted my money - which he requested in cash - back. He only offered to cover "up to" 3 hours of work for free, on the work he already did ONLY...which wasn't what he was hired to do. At a time when we are facing an uncertain world, and I will have no business for an untold amount of time, I cannot let this person take advantage of me for such a large amount of money. Unfortunately, I now have to take steps to go after him to collect it. Fortunately, I have strong documentation on my side. Greg is a very nice man, but he was wrong about $3000 worth of diesel repairs on my Golf TDI. He kept selling me different things that were wrong with my diesel engine, and every time I believed him, and over 2 years, I spent a lot on his repairs. When I finally traveled an hour to have a real diesel mechanic take a look at it, all of Greg's repairs were either wrong or done poorly. In the end, I needed to put another $2000 dollars into the car to get the car to run properly. I wouldn't trust him with a diesel again. read more

Great service and diagnosis... Car: 2000 Jetta VR6 Problem: Shifting causes jerks plus my bumper is almost touching the ground. Greg was very knowledgeable and did a drive test before he called me with the diagnosis of the problem. He gave me his card which had his email address. Yes a auto guy who actually cares about the car and you. He was able to fix the problem without telling me I needed a new Transmission like the 2 other guys that I went to before him. He saved me money, time, and more importantly anguish. I highly recommend that any German car owners go see this guy. read more

I'll simply tell you what happened. I left my Jetta for a routine oil change one morning. I picked up my car in the afternoon. When I started my car I noticed it was making a ''thump, thump" noise from the engine. I was pressed for time and decided to drive down the street to see how things went. I made it all of 10, maybe 20, yards when the engine stopped. Just crash and burn, stopped. I drifted over to the curb, sat for a minute to see if I could at least get back to the station. Nothing. Turned the key again. Nothing. So I walked back to the station and found Greg. I explained what happened. He and another mechanic headed out the back door to check out the car. They drove my car back a few minutes later and explained (the mechanic that worked on my car) that there is a "restart button" on all Jettas that must be triggered after an oil change. If this button is not pressed, then the engine thinks there is no oil in the car and as an act of self-preservation will immediately shut down. They / he had forgotten to press this button after changing the oil in my car, and so engine had shut down. The story didn't sit right with me, and so the next day I called back and spoke to Greg directly. I explained that I would like him to explain to me again what had happened, and that I had never heard of this "button". Greg assured me that there is indeed a button, and confirmed the story that was told to me the day before by his employee. I checked the oil in my car the next day and found the oil low. I put in 3 quarts of oil to bring it up to the top mark on the dip stick (fill line). I thought this was unusual (as it had been in for an oil change only 24 hours before) and so I checked where I had parked my car overnight and at work that day. No evidence of a leak. I have since asked some others (including another Volkswagen mechanic) about the button Greg and his employee referred to. I can't find anyone else who knows about any "restart button". read more

Greg's recently replaced the timing belt on my 03 A4. Not only was it reasonably priced (for an Audi) - $700 less than the dealer - but all the guys there were friendly and knowledgeable. They did a thorough job on the car (finding some cosmetic things that were broken) and were quick - completed the job in a day. It's not the spiffiest place, but don't be dissuaded by building. Also helpful that it's two blocks from the MBTA station, so easy to get to and from. read more

Car: 1989 Vanagon Weekender I purchased the VW over the internet and drove it across the country back to MA. i wanted to find a repair shop that would give me a honest opinion of its health and if I got my monies worth. I searched the internet and read the reviews and Greg had the most honest and fair, so I dropped it off to have them take a look at it. I wasn't in a rush, so they went over the van with a fine tooth comb and repaired all the "need to's" and emailed me a "should do" with estimated costs. The bottom line is the final bill was extremely fair and Greg and his staff were great to work with. I plan on having them do some more work on it once my wife stops driving it. read more

If you own a German car and are going anywhere but Greg's you are making a huge mistake. I own a VW Eurovan that is a typical VW, over engineered and under built. Seriously.....you will get less ripped off actually taking it to the dealer. This place is terrible. Customer Service is non-existent. They won't even call you when they have your car. They won't fix things, and when they don't they will whine and blame you. It's kind of creepy. And to be fair, they don't fix things so you'll come back and they can charge you more. Most repairmen are very good, but they get a bad name from the rare cons like this place. So like me, you will only have yourself to blame if you get roped into doing business with these charlatans. AVOID AT ALL COSTS And I am to blame. I should have stopped going to him long ago, but I let the convenience blind me to the overall terrible quality. Finally used a new place: they returned calls, communicated problems, got things fixed and didn't treat me like I owed them something. And Marsha is wrong. Greg isn't that nice. read more

I recently had an issue with my 2001 VW Jetta. I was referred to Gregs by another mechanic who highly recommended him. I was slightly apprehesive, due to the fact that VW's are expensive, I didn't know Greg, and it seemed to me like something was up with the transmission-which is a costly job. I was beyond impressed with the service. I needed to have a coolant leak repaired and a piece replaced in my transmission. Greg was up front with all the problems he found and gave me an estimated cost for each problem. Needless to say, the car was fixed and I was able to get it within 2 days. I had another similar problem recently and brought it back to Greg. He fixed it within a day and I was able to pick up the car after I got out of work and leave a check at the office. long story short, love these guys and I would highly recommend them to anyone who owns a VW read more

I took my Audi to Greg's a few times, and the repairs were simple and completed without fuss. He put a brake rotor on the car that was all rusted on the hat. It was clearly laying around somewhere, so that was't too impressive. Then on another service they damaged the wheel. Greg took the cost of repairing the wheel off the cost of the major service, but stuck by that his people would never have caused any damage. It was pretty clear though they had, so happy he made it right with cost, but not too happy he didn't take the high-road and apologize. I can't speak to vehicle-specific work, since mine was general (tie rods, etc.), so your mileage may vary. read more
