My 30+ year old furnace went out right after Christmas and I called Gress for an estimate to replace. Mark (the owner) came out the same day and I decided to also replace my old A/C (20+ yrs old) and water heater at the same time. Mark and his brother Matt returned the following week and did an excellent job replacing everything (new Rheem furnace, Rheem A/C, and Bradford White water heater) to include pipes, hoses, and fittings so that everything was within code. Our furnace suddenly started blowing cold air one morning. I got Mark's name from a coworker who recently used him so I gave him a call. I told him what was going on and he first asked if the filter has been changed as that could cause the problem. That wasn't the issue so he came out several hours later. I wrote an initial review but have since decided to change it. The work was fine. It's what you would expect for a simple AC issue. But when Mark says he would knock off $20 for me to write a good review on Yelp, well that's not cool. I bought in, but I had to edit my review after a few months because my integrity won over. It felt strange to me to have an HVAC guy come to your house wearing slick shades and talking about additional things that needed to be replaced, well you can be the judge of that. I would have given him a good review without having to be asked to do so. Nothing he did could not have been accomplished by another company. I'd also like to add to TW who questioned my integrity for "going back on my word" by not giving him a good review when I agreed to. The point was he asked for it. If you're an honest business man, you should not have to do that. You're work should speak for itself. In all of my other good reviews, the customer service prompted the result. My reviews are honest and I intend to keep them that way when we all know some are helping friends and family by padding certain sites with fake reviews. You did more harm by questioning my review. Have integrity yourself like most businesses and accept it and many even apologized and tried to make right when they offered less than stellar customer service. And to comment on my review under the guise of sending it as a "Compliment" lacks integrity as well. read more

Update - as luck would have it, my air conditioner died this month. When Mark came out last year, he indicated that at 12 years old, the system was nearing end of life. When the air conditioner died, I assumed the worst and that the entire system would need to be replaced. My AC was on the fritz, and with 100+ degree weather coming in, I was very anxious to get it fixed quickly, so I gave Mark a call. As soon as I told him what the AC was doing, he knew exactly what was wrong, replaced the parts, and I was back up and running in 30 minutes! The AC is running even better than it was before! Mark is extremely knowledgable, and his pricing is very fair. While he was replacing the part, he found a few small caps that had never been put in place like they should have when the unit was installed, so he replaced them at no charge. I thought our furnace had a major issue when suddenly heat won't come out at all. After doing as much research and reading the manual, I narrowed it to a limit circuit lockout due to the code errors from a light flashing, and a dirty air filter. I replaced the filter and after 3 hours of it running, it still wouldn't reset per the manual. Figuring there is no further instruction of what I can do, I called Mark to try and schedule an appointment. He was very helpful asking me what the issue first and offering some minor troubleshooting to see if there is something that can be done without him coming out. He even guided me in finding the reset switch and said these things can go bad if multiple resets keep happening. Voila, the burners started firing after. My past experience and past living area is that vendors do not usually go this extra mile. They'll just schedule an appointment to fix. But Mark was different in that he's so customer friendly. He asked me to check a few things after realizing the furnace is actually still pretty new, and maybe a simple manual reset would do the trick. And that did the trick! (reset not clearly mentioned in manual) I'm still new in the area and Mark is now #1 on my call list for HVAC. My little son will have heat in the his bedroom and playroom without having to lug a portable heater around. Such customer service is fairly exceptional these days and this is why Mark has such great reviews, including this one. read more

Livermore hitting 105 degrees two days in a row...and I expect to get a service guy to my house? Probably 100 hundred other people asking... apparently it was only 50. Mark still was able to come out and check out my upstairs AC unit that had decided now was the time to let go, the day after I called him. He quickly diagnosed the issue as the capacitor since both fan and cooling not going in the unit. My wife got an estimate for repairing a noisy heater. Before shelling out the money I wanted to get a second quote. I just picked the contractor with the highest Yelp review and found Gress Heating. Glad I did. Mark called back quickly, and was able to come out to look/quote. Cost to do the same part replacement was 1/3 of the original quote. He scheduled and completed the work within a couple of days. The other repair company was heavily pushing us to replace the heater, which would have been several thousand dollars for them. Mark is a very professional repairman. He was recommended to me by a friend, and the friends recommendation was good. Before I got ahold of Mark I had gotten a quote to repair the circuit board in the heater for $900. I thought that was too expensive and gave Mark a call and he came out right away and did it for $550 ( I have an old heater, newer ones are cheaper). He is honest and very responsive to phone calls and responded quickly when I called. He is very personable and helped me while I was working on my car as well. Prices are reasonable as well. Awesome!!! I wanted to install a blower fan on my fireplace to cut heating costs this winter. After doing a lot of research, it seemed it was simple enough for me to do it myself, except for one problem...the fireplace wouldn't light up. So I called around for costs and everyone wanted to charge me double, once for the maintenance and once for the install. Well, Mark Gress to the rescue. He came out, hooked up the fan and cleaned out the cobwebs (literally!) and voila! all is good. And he only charged me for a simple service call. I called a few places the day after Memorial Day expecting everyone to be busy and not return calls but Mark returned my call within the hour and we set up an appointment 2 hrs later to get an estimate on a new HVAC for the home. Our AC was not working just as the weather started getting hot. After a couple unproductive visits from another company, I was told we had a major freon leak and it was in the walls.
