Al came out today right on time. I called them Monday and they were out the next day which was nice. He inspected the ac and did multiple checks and reviews to ensure no major issues. He also checked the furnace to make sure there were no glaring red flags. He took time to show me a little bit about the ac and furnace and what to look out for. I did the Richard's club so they will come out again before winter to make sure the furnace is still in great condition. Worth the piece of might to get checked out before summer heat comes. read more

The A/C picked the worst time to decide not to participate during last week's heat wave. Called Richard's and got an appointment for the next morning, but I had to cancel. Kaylan was understanding, and we rebooked the appointment without urgency because the heat wave broke. Olim was the technician and has a 5.0/5 rating, and I have to agree with his rating. He immediately identified the issue, fixed it, checked the compressor, and went on his way to hopefully earn another 5 rating at his next appointment. This is the most principled review I've ever written. It's based on a 4 year timeline of experience with this company. Richard's Heating and Air Repair does not stand by their work. The quality of work is sloppy. Their customer service is close to non-existent when it matters: when there's an issue with the job you paid them to do. The basic story is this: - 4 years ago our compressor blew out. We called Richards based on reviews. They suggested a whole new condenser (the big metal box in the back yard) not just the compressor (the motor in the middle of the metal box). They said specifically, "it would be a more reliable fix this way." With a 5 year warranty as well. It was approximately $5,500 to fix this in this way but worth it, apparently, based on their expert advice. Note: On the original installation: I noticed Richard's Heating and Air left all the cables into the new compressor looking worse than the way they found it. It wasn't like I got a new system all brought up to spec by hiring these pros... Nope. The box was new but the interconnections to the house were tattered and weathered (from the fact they were old). They didn't bother to put new wrapping around this sensitive part of the system. Or take pride in the way A/C installations looked at the customer's house. Did they expect I would wrap it nicely myself? Or wouldn't care? Or that it might not make some difference in cooling efficiency or reliability of the unit they just installed? - Well guess what? 11months after that installation the compressor blew out again! They said the part was under warranty but the labor was not! I suggested they should cover labor since it was clearly too soon for this to happen and the system we have was based on THEIR suggestion. It was about 1400 in labor. Eventually after much back and forth Richard agreed to a reduced fee. I seem to recall I paid 1/2 to 2/3 of that price. - 6 months ago - or just about 4 years after installation. The compressor blew out again! I called them to complain that their installation has failed again and they called back and told me that the compressor or condenser were no longer warrantied, because the replacement part was just 1 year warranty! So my 5 year warranty was only good for that original fix and then it basically went away. Note: Clearly there may be something wrong with my system that it kills compressors regularly. But that is something experienced technicians should be able to spot and handle. And more importantly, I think Richard's Heating and Air would care that a system they installed has failed 2 times in 4 years and they might want to make it right with the customer they sold it to. For business sake. Let alone just karma's sake. So, my air conditioner is still broken and I need to again pay to fix the thing I originally paid them to fix. This is a $5 - 7K repair at this point. So, I am approaching a $12K outlay to fix just a part of my A/C in under 5 years of operating time. I called Richard's to simply make any kind of an offer to share the responsibility to correct the issue. I even told them I am holding off writing a review to give them time to work with me. After an initial call back message to let me know their work nor the part they installed were under warranty, and then 1 extended conversation with their desk person who made it clear this wasn't her call to make and that she be sure to tell Richard all about it and he'd call me back. Well, he didn't. I wanted the issue corrected so I even made one last call and left a message. Richard never returned my calls. That was long, but so is my experience with these guys. I figured if I'm going to tell you that Richard's Heating and Air Conditioning really really sucks to work with, I should give you my 4 years and multiple interactions with them as evidence. And then you can see it's not some fluke bad experience it's actually their company's brand of experience: consumer pain. read more

We have chosen Richards heating and AC to replace and move our furnace to the attic. We have done extensive research and got a quite a few quotes, but at the end, what made us make up our minds and choose Richards - is the way we were not pressured into agreement, but rather given time to make our own choice and were given quite honest feedback and explanations for how to choose best furnace/ AC combo to meet our needs. Its rarely when company takes time to thoroughly explain pros and cons about different models so we could understand our options. We were scheduled for work pretty fast and are very happy with the way crew did their work. Jose, Cole and Olim were very professional and accommodative. I called a company in San Ramon to come and take a look at my A/C unit, basically I was told my unit needed to be replaced. I got a 5k quote from them. My neighbors recommend I get a second opinion before replacing anything and I was referred to Richard. He was super sweet over the phone , he was able to get Olim (totally spelled his name wrong) to my place the next day. Olim was absolutely informative and super sweet. He actually fixed my A/C issue for $285. My thermostat was broken and some thing needed to be cleaned. He was there for a couple hours but didn't leave until my A/C unit was blowing cold air. Being a female when it comes to stuff like home repairs it's really hard because businesses can completely lie to you and you have no way of verifying if they are right or wrong. I did call the better business bureau in regards to the company that claimed I needed my A/C unit replaced. I am too afraid to even give them a negative review because they know where I live and I completely feel if they can be shady and pretend my A/C unit needs to be changed then they are capable of anything . I am very grateful that I called Richard and I am very thankful that they were honest with me . Literally if I wouldn't have called 5k would have went down the drain. My heating system stopped working in the first week of November when we had really cold temperatures. Based on almost 5-star rating on Yelp, I called Richards"s. That was a big mistake. They really took advantage of my situation and ripped me off. The service man replaced the controller, the main board, and changed me $399 just for that part - the retail cost of the controller board is $120 !! I asked him some questions and reluctantly agreed. At that point, may be he saw me as gullible and so decided to tack on some more loot. After replacing the main board, he did some testing and told me I needed a new transformer. The transformer costs only about $24 and he charged me $140 for that. What is interesting is that he already had the invoice with the transformer ready on his phone. With the service fee of $120, I had a bill for $659 (see attachment). The parts prices I verified are for retail sale from parts store, and the HVAC companies, like the auto repair shops, get their parts for 20% - 30% off the retail price. Their very professional technician, Sean came out, diagnosed the problem and confirmed that a new interior unit was unnecessary. We've used Richard's a few times over the years, always with good results. This time repairman Joe Black managed to save a 38 year old furnace by replacing a burned out fan control board. This furnace gets low usage, so although it is well past its expected life, we wanted to avoid the cost of replacement. Instead of paying for a new furnace we paid for the control board and a very quick installation. Their response to my call was next-day and the repair with the replacement part, the day after that. I would give them 0 stars if I could. Terrible. I had an AC problem and when I called I explained the situation and where the AC unit was on the building and that there was no stair well or ladder on the side of the building. I wanted to be clear about that when scheduling it so that I wouldn't waste anyone's time. I have had someone come out here before from a different business and use their ladder to get to the roof where the condenser is. During the intense east bay summer heat, I thought I was going to get some relief. Nope. They come out and tell me that it isn't safe for the exact reason that I explained to them in the first place! They will charge you an extra 5% to use a credit card and mail a second invoice with an additional $118 "service charge" after you've already signed final invoice and paid for service and parts. I understand a service charge if we decided not to go forward, but we had them complete the service, signed the invoice upon completion (invoice already included an $83 service charge) and paid full amount on the invoice by check (as we didn't want to be assessed an extra 5%). How is it possible to be charged for two service charges on a single repair and how did these guys get all of these positive reviews? Ridiculous! I've dealt with lots of vendors and contractors and never experienced this before. Do not trust their office as they will give you the run around and will not offer to resolve but insist that you pay the second invoice. Also technician will change the quoted price on the final invoice if they need to come back to finish the job. Don't trust this company at all as they are dIshonest and unethical. My home has an exhaust fan in the ceiling above the central heating system, which operates 24/7, that decided to go on the fritz, making horrendous noise in the process (similar to the sound of a freight train driving though the living room!). I hadn't used a heating service for many years, and the last one I used gave poor service, so I turned to Yelp and found very good reviews for Richard's Heating and Air. Richard was out the next day, accessed the problem, and promptly located a vendor who could order the fan unit that was needed (of course, this heater has to have parts specially ordered, my misfortune, but no reflection at all on Richard!). Knowing that I had to keep the circuit breaker turned off that controlled the fan, which also turned off our heater, stove and kitchen lights, Richard made this project a priority, checking daily with the vendor for the part status, and giving me updates on when the part would arrive. Once it did, Richard assigned his son to come and install the unit the next morning. The repair was done quickly, properly, and the cost was much more reasonable that I expected! I feel confident that if any other heating or AC issues arise, Richard will be able to professional take care of the problem, and I won't be price gouged like so many companies seem to do nowadays. Richard's is a local business and he has long-time roots in the community, so it's nice to support a local business in this tough economy, knowing that you'll also get excellent service in return. Excellent service! I was just starting a full remodel of my house when my lighting contractor found a crushed air duct up in the attic space. I called Richard's and spoke with their service and gave them my information. In less than 10 minutes, Olim (on Richard's team) called me and asked if I was home, he'd like to come by and take a look at the duct work. I wasn't at home, but I was working nearby. I immediately left work and met Olim onsite. He went up into the attic space, found the issue, gave me a very reasonable quote, went to go get the necessary parts and completed all of the work in less than 1 hour! What? Very good experience. I recently had the blower motor go out on my HVAC system. The system is less than five years old and stopped circulating the air through the house. I called Richard's Heating and Air Repair and they had a tech at my house within an hour or so. The technician was very polite and efficient. He spent about 45 minutes testing the motor in the hopes that it would be a simple fix. Unfortunately he confirmed that the motor had indeed failed and would have to be replaced. Fortunately, since the unit was less than 10 years old the motor was still under warranty and I only had to pay for labor. He came back two days later after getting a replacement. It only took an hour or so to install. I was happy to get a new HVAC motor with my checkbook being relatively unscathed. I highly recommend Richard's. I had a problem with my 21 year old Carrier furnace not coming on to the demand for heat and stopped with a Code 33, so I called them. The technician arrived early in the window given, spent some time diagnosing the problem and identified it as one of the control boards. He happened to have one in the truck. Once installed it the furnace immediately fired up and ran through a couple of cycles. The technician told me the parts have a 1 year warranty and 3 years on labor. Later that evening the furnace stopped coming on when the call for heat was was initiated again, but no Code 33 this time, so I called Richards back. They scheduled up the next appointment, showed up on time, and the same technician diagnosed the problem which turned out to be an adjustment to the gas pressure. Once the adjustment was made, the furnace fired up and has been cycling like new for over two weeks now. No charge. They honor their warranty, the technicians are experienced and courteous, and I highly recommend them based on this experience. read more

Very honest people!! I had bought a house that was built in the 60's which had some rework done (unsure when). I had an inspection done and the inspection report came that the air flow in the house was not balance and this would cause inefficiency in air flow and bills eventually. I looked up in Yelp and read many of the different 4-5 star companies review and called Richard's and they were able to fit me in immediately. Inspector came and did a thorough job of walking through each vent and looking at my attic.. To find out it is just poor design but I shouldn't have any problem... Inspector looked around and redirected my vents so it will give better quality of air flow too.. I was expecting few thousand dollars to fix the problem, seems like I worried too much. To top off their excellent service, inspector even cleaned my filter and advice best way to keep my filters clean. For my future problems, Richard's will be my to go place! So my husband picked this company based on the outstanding yelp reviews. We found out that our air conditioner failed because the circuit board went out (very common problem). After searching online, I found out that the board costs approximately $100. Richard apparently told my husband the board cost about $300. We got charged $416 total. My husband & I originally had our A/C unit looked over at the end of July as our townhouse didn't seem to be cooling down. We were told that the compressor was 'dead' & contactor switch was broken and the unit needed replacing. The rough estimate was about $7000 for a new unit as it would have cost approx $2000 plus labor to repair the older unit. The technician said to call him so that he could give us an actual cost. When we called back it took him over 10 days to call us back! We sat on this information for about 2 months because it seemed more logical to go with a new unit seeing as ours is pretty old, but the price of the unit seemed so steep. We called RICHARD'S HEATING & AIR REPAIR for a second opinion & we are glad we did! Richard called us to make an appointment & he was very informative. If indeed the unit needed replacing, a new unit was going to cost an approximate $4000 cheaper than the other company! His son Olim came out this morning & was very courteous! He was also informative & very efficient! It turned out that our compressor was fine!!! It just needed cooling down because the unit had been running for a while due to the contactor switch being broken. He did so many other tests than the other company! He took his time & asked various questions about the unit. He measured the refrigerant level, which measured low & instead of just adding it, he cleaned our air filter. Once it was cleaned, the refrigerant level was fine! He explained how a dirty filter can affect the operation of the unit. We will definitely keep on top of that! Thanks! So instead of spending $7000 we spent $192 for the part & labor. :-) What a relief! We will be sure to use Richard's Heating & Air Repair for any future needs! Richard Westwood is one of the original honest guys. I was quoted over $25K for two air conditioners and heating units by the other guys. He told me over the phone to put the brakes on and came over immediately. He suggested I do a yearly service update and he would help me keep my current unit alive as long as possible. Recently my air conditioner started blowing out hot air. He diagnosed the problem over the phone. Under his guidance, I shut the unit down for 24 hours before it froze up. Then he asked for follow up pictures of my filter. I have never had better service in 25 years of home ownership. Richard's Heating is the real deal. I'm going to start by saying that the people at Richards are so good at what they do AND they are simply great at their customer service. It all started when I needed someone to come out and trouble shoot a new floor furnace we installed ourselves. I called several Heating and Air repair companies, 4 to be exact, and none of them would work on floor furnaces, new or old and they didn't serve the town of Sunol! I did a quick search here on Yelp and saw the great reviews and took a chance on one more call. And I am so happy I did! From the very moment of the initial phone contact with their office manager Lori I knew we were in good hands. She was cordial and compassionate to my dilemma; a husband fresh from surgery and a pregnant daughter in law I was at my wits end with the company I had purchased it from and the company who makes the furnace....Cozy! NO help from them I was on my own. Lori sent out Olim the very next day and then Curtis came to finish up, both gave us great customer care and got the furnace running perfectly. We are still waiting for Cozy to make good on the faulty parts that came on the furnace and were replaced by Olim and Curtis. Evidently the Warranty is only for parts BUT not for the labor or service or trip charges. So my advice to any of you reading this....buy your furnace from Richards, then have them install it and service it! DO NOT try to save a buck by buying it yourself over the internet. Had an appt on June 7 for a quote for a new swamp cooler for my 78 year old mother's mobile home as hers is dead and she has been living through this heat with no air at all. Olim came out and gave me a verbal quote. He said he would follow it up with an email so I would have the quote in writing. He never did. I have called 3 times (and left detailed messages) and sent a message through Yelp, asking for the quote as I want to have the work done. No response AT ALL. The last time I called was on a Friday around 1pm. The answering service informed me that they had all gone home for the day. Guess they don't need the business. read more

I called these folks after the company I used previously went out of business. Initially, I had to leave a voicemail but Richard himself called me back within 1 business day. The reason for the service call is to perform a basic system check on both my AC and heating units. Richard's son is the tech who came out. He was very professional and appeared to be very thorough. He spent about 45m taking a look at the system and did not try to up-sell me on anything - they just performed the requested service and advised me accordingly. No issues were found with my system so I cannot comment on any actual repairs but I suspect they would have done a great job had there been an occasion to do so. The only negative is that they left a wire disconnected on the heater unit when they were testing it. This was apparently required so as to not get shocked by the AC unit when they are doing this specific test. I discovered the error after they left and called them right away. The tech turned around and returned within the hour to rectify the issue. Then, Richard also called a couple of days later to check-in and make sure everything was fine. My reasoning for grading them at 4-stars instead of 5 is two-fold: 1) They did make a mistake albeit a small one. And they did correct it right away which is really all you can expect when a mistake is made; 2) Given my particular situation, I was not able to see the full breadth of their services. Given both of these reasons, I felt 4-stars is the appropriate rating for me to give. Net-net, these folks seem like a solid vendor that I will be using again in the future. read more

So, when does an A/C unit quit working? When its 105 in July thats when. The first company I called said I needed a new A/C unit for $7K. When I balked he said $6K. I guess they really wanted to make sure that I would stay COMFY. Olim from Richards came out and found a valve leaking, fixed it, recharged it and billed me less then $300. He said my A/C unit probably has 2 or 3 more years left in it. I'm sorry about the late review, hopefully better late than never. Thanks guys. read more

Joe is the man. Had an issue with my A/C and contacted Richards (after being told by another company my whole system needed to be replaced at a cost of $20,000). First the receptionist on the phone was extremely friendly. She told their call rate and let me know someone could be out the same day after 2pm(mind you this was around 11am). she set the appointment and told me the tech would text me about 20 minutes before arrival. I received the text around 3:30 telling me Joe Black was on his way. Joe arrives and is extremely friendly and respectful considering the covid-19 concerns we face today. Joe makes his first checks and finds the previous tech didn't reinstall the capacitor they thought was bad. Joe installs a new one and makes a few more checks. At the end of the day Joe found one of the main compressor fuses is bad. 1 capacitor which the other company stole and 1 fuse(probably the real problem) a small $300 bill and my A/C is back up and running.
