Stop by this place while running errands since it is on the way. Ordered Tuna melt sandwich with sour dough bread. It came with a small tiny pickle. Sour dough bread was good, the chewy kind. There may have been a little too much mayo and not as much tuna. Would have like to see some more texture in the tuna mix (cucumber, lettuce, celery of some kind). Never been here before covid, but there are a couple tables outside, but a lot of road noise and it was a cold day. So was not idea. There aren't any seating in the restaurants at this time. They no longer give out WiFi codes. Was hoping to do some work during lunch but wasn't able to. Cashier was nice. read more

Service was typical for a coffee shop! Regulars stopped by which is neat, a nice little community vibe. However if looking for a place to work or hang out with a friend the ambiance isn't all that. There's temporary outdoor seating on the inside and outside but the vibe doesn't match the unique entrance that has flowers draping over entrance. Nonetheless don't let the ambiance detract you from the food. read more

They forgot part of our order ( although replaced with a different item), took an incredibly long time to make our sandwiches, and the coffee was not good at all. Americano was very watery. My $14 veggie sandwich was full of oil and just fell apart. Customer service is not their jam at all!! Very arrogant and curt responses to requests. Lastly very overpriced. Cute place but the two women working the counter had no personality. No 'good morning' , she put the drink on the counter with: here is your coffee, then when I said thank you, no ' you're welcome' didn't offer to heat up my croissant. Their $15 pastrami sandwich gives you just a tad over 2.5 ounces of pastrami . The best & most expansive pastrami sandwich is in New York . One of the most expansive cities in the USA . It's $25 but you get 8oz of the best pastrami in the country. To just get even close , a $15 pastrami sandwich in Seattle should at least have 4.5 ounces pastrami. I really liked this small coffee shop with a wide menu of items to choose from. We each ordered an americano with some steamed egg nog on top. Additionally a bagel with cream cheese was ordered too. The coffee drink was a five star-it was just perfect however the bagel (maybe it was steamed instead of toasted) was so chewy it was difficult to but through-and I have some pretty strong teeth. If I could give 0 stars, I would. The staff is always new. Because this place experiences constant turnover, you'd think that they'd get someone kind or helpful simply by chance, but they seem to attract the rudest and least skilled customer service workers. I've given this place multiple chances because I've hoped that they will stumble upon someone that actually cares or does a good job, but after my experience today, I refuse to give this place another dollar. Ordered a tea and was served water. Asked for my sandwich on a different bread than it's typically served on and the barista looked at me like I was insane and then sullenly told me she'd have to charge me extra. This was after she argued with the previous customer about whether or not she paid for a cookie (she did) and went through the trouble to look up the transaction before giving it to her. It's unreasonably expensive, even for Seattle. For two people, you'll spend about $45 and get mediocre sandwiches and the worst coffee of your life. And that's before tip, if you decide to tip after being treated like taking your order was an inconvenience. All this makes me sad, as the shop itself is so cute and in a great location. The patio is adorable, there's parking, it's located next to other nice businesses, but don't let all that fool you into spending money here - it's truly not worth it. read more

On my last day in the neighborhood, I had to come in for my last espresso. Located next to the all encompassing hardware store, Gretchen's has been a neighborhood gem. Folks of all ages hang out and interact, especially if the weather is nice. Nice coffee using Caffé Vita beans. Always consistent. And a nice selection of sweet and savory pastries. I found the workers to be very rude and disrespectful. I arrived approximately 20 minutes before closing. The hours are not visible. The workers informed me that they were close to closing time, and so they'd only be able to make my espresso drinks "one at a time". That doesn't seem any different than any other coffee shop I've ever been to. I automatically added a 15% gratuity to my order, and I regret doing so. A member of my party was rudely spoken to, and I wasn't made aware until i left. This neighborhood cafe has been here at least ten years, run by the same woman. It is very family friendly. Although they don't have boosters, they are very nice to kids and not judgy mcjudgerson when you have kids with you. I have seen regulars visit here for long periods of time as well as the breakfast and lunch rush folks. I have happily sat with a 10 month old and been surprised that my drink was brought to me. Also, the asian woman at the counter who made the drink was very snippy, rude, and overall unpleasant. This is probably my favorite cafe to get my coffee and just hang out a bit, getting done some of my all-important thinking for the day ahead. They have all of your beverage favorites, including coffee, tea, sodas, etc, and they have great tasting breakfast sandwiches, quiches, salads, and soups, but no bagels (no biggie for me, but people ask for them so I wonder why they don't have them). It's always fun to come in and they know my usual order. I'll sit with my coffee, reading the free copies of the Seattle and New York Times, or the Wall Street Journal while retirees, mothers with their kids, and sometimes students come in and out, happy they have their food and got it from friendly baristas. There is plenty of free parking out front, a nice outdoor patio for those sunny days, and free wifi if you plan to work there a while. Hot tip: they charge a small fee for credit card purchases under $5, but you can avoid this by buying one of their gift cards and putting at least $25 on it. read more

Anyways we sort of stumbled through the hello. I asked a out the Chinese Breakfast tea if it was a black tea and she said yes. Gretchen's Place is a surprisingly quaint and delicious neighborhood cafe. It serves the Laurelhurst and Hawthorne Hills neighborhoods. The place is small, but welcoming. There were two people behind the counter on Sunday afternoon, eager to take our order. Since it was near lunch time, we opted for sandwiches and coffee. We ordered the reuben, half sandwich + soup, one latte, and one macchiato. My half sandwich was roasted turkey and the soup of the day was garden vegetable. Food was pretty standard fare for a cafe. Nothing spectacular. Their coffee, which comes from Caffe Vita Coffee Roasting Co., was on the higher end. Unlike Starbucks and the conventional types, Gretchen's gives you a real coffee experience. You can taste the bold, yet smooth texture of the coffee while also smelling the earthiness of the beans. On top of this, the prices are about $1 cheaper than those overpriced places downtown. My first encounter with Caffe Vita occurred here. Living on Sand Point and 65th, I loved the proximity of Gretchen's. Sandwiches are good, pastries are sweet. I love the vanilla lattes. I LOVE Caffe Vita. I love seeing the same baristas day after day. The only thing I hate is the parking lot. Parking is a mess and people always think you're stealing their spot (or you theirs) because there are two entrances and two exits and as your waiting you can't see the cars waiting on the other side! No friendly greeting when I first walked in, the girl at the register acted as if I was a bother to her, then she and the other person working were having an argument that kept going on for several minutes. This is my go-to place in the Wedgewood/Laurelhurst area for coffee in the mornings. Yes, it is small. But it is in the neighborhood, they know my name, and the coffee- wow. It is super good. Like the best. They certainly know how to choose a great coffee. I have also had the chocolate croissants (a lot of them) and they are delish, plus a quiche or two. It can get crazy busy in here, which I love, because supporting local is a good thing. Parking can be odd I guess, but I haven't had any problems.
