I live in DC and usually don't take bus trips. My boyfriend moved to Petersburg for army training at Fort Lee a couple of months ago and I started coming down here regularly and taking buses. I initially chose Greyhound because of its (what I thought was) good reputation and its (also, what I thought initially were) relatively better facilities (Megabus does not have stations but rather just parking lots where passengers board). However, after taking buses from both companies for several times now, I would much rather sacrifice some comfort (standing under the sun in a Megabus parking lot versus in a Greyhound station) for demonstrated professionalism and work ethic. Megabus rarely runs late on schedule, and when it does run late it is nowhere near Greyhound's tardiness level. Here's the one thing I don't get with Greyhound - if your buses CONSISTENTLY run approximately 15-20 minutes late, why don't you just advertise your schedules accordingly and honestly tell customers that the buses cannot realistically arrive and depart according to your schedule? With the 11:45am service from Richmond to DC, we do not start boarding until 11:45 (and that's only if we're lucky), how are we supposed to leave on time? Ever since I started taking the buses on a rather regular basis starting from early May (from DC to Richmond or Petersburg), there has rarely been one single time when my bus left on time. I missed a job interview twice because the buses that were supposed to leave Richmond for DC at 11:45am never departed on time. I made two trips on June 28 and July 5 because their (supposedly) departure time was optimal. After the June 28 fiasco (I missed my job interview in Greenbelt, MD by around 15 minutes) I still thought I should give Greyhound another chance and take the one a week later, for the same, rescheduled interview. Finally, the July 5 trip thoroughly crushed all hope and respect I had left for this company (also, needless to say, I probably lost my chance to work at the Greenbelt company forever after missing my scheduled interview twice). On June 28 it was more than 20 minutes late, and on July 5 it was an hour and half late. More infuriating, the bus on July 5 seemed to have been overbooked. Some passengers, including me, stood in line waiting to board the bus (which didn't leave the station until around 12:10pm instead of 11:45am to begin with) only to see our bus leave without us. Subsequently we had to wait more than an hour more for another bus to come and take us to DC. Our bus did not leave Richmond until 1:15pm - 90 minutes after its scheduled departure time. We had purchased tickets for seats, not standby tickets. It is simply absurd that the bus would leave without us, after having already been running late on schedule. Furthermore, throughout the entire process, there was absolutely no communication from Greyhound to its customers. We simply saw the bus leave before our eyes, while none of the Greyhound staff present told us what was going on, or why our bus left without us. Afterward, all the passengers left behind did not have any idea what was going on, and had to wait around in the station. A couple of us tried to approach staff members walking by, but they all appeared bothered by our questions and impatient. For an hour, none of us knew what would happen to our trip that we had purchased tickets for. Even after a bus finally arrived in the station to pick up the stranglers, we did not receive one singe apology from any Greyhound employee throughout the journey. This is simply ludicrous, unprofessional, and exasperating. It shocks me how Greyhound as a relatively big company can still get by day to day with such horrendous customer service and poor work ethic. Going further back, on June 14, I took a Greyhound bus from Richmond to DC to catch a flight from Reagan airport. After our bus finally arrived (15-20 minute late on schedule already), we settled and sat on the bus while the driver drove around the station and then a parking lot next to it for two rounds, utterly confused. He drove us back to the gate and informed us that there was a bus dysfunction and we needed to switch buses. That involved having to unload all our baggage and getting all passengers off board to wait back in the station for another bus to take us. We ended up not leaving Richmond until 50 minutes late. Finally, remember that on July 5, after some passengers and I got abandoned by our bus, there was no communication from the company to us, and no apology at any point throughout the entire confusion phase, additional wait time, and final bus ride to DC from any Greyhound employee, including in-station staff and driver. The lack of respect for customers and lack of professionalism as illustrated in consistent tardiness have equaled "Greyhound" with "unreliability" in my mind, and I'm afraid I will try every effort to not take another Greyhound bus again. read more
