Very poor customer service. I was parked near the store and decided to walk in to ask a question regarding my mountain bike. The store was not busy. I walked to the front counter and the sales team didn't even acknowledge my presence. Didn't even say Hi, we'll be with you a minute. Do you have a question. Completely just ignored that some one was there. I could understand if the store was full and they were super busy. After 5 minutes I walked over to repair shop and was able to speak with someone. I'd rather not pull the race card, but I would not go back. read more

This is not my first positive experience, but this was so great that I had to post about it. I bought a used Trek bike as a gift. Every person in the store, but especially Mark, when out of their way to answer my questions politely and knowledgeably. They also held the bike for me since I couldn't get there immediately. When I did arrive to pick it up, they taught me about bike locks and the service area had time to install a bracket for a bike lock on my new-to-me bike. The bike wouldn't fit in my car and Mark dropped it off at my house after the store closed. This was truly above and beyond service in every way. Both 2 bikes from Griffin because of their great customer service. Each time I went I was surprised at how they went above and beyond good customer support. The first time I went to buy my 10yo son's bike and they showed him all the different models and colors but making sure he understood the difference and asking him what he liked or didn't. We are recreational cyclists so they showed him options where he could maximize his usage. They answered all his questions patiently. When I took my wife's bike to get tuned up, they replaced a tube that seemed popped but didn't charge me for the tune up because it wasn't in need of any other repairs. I can't say enough about Griffen, as my longtime neighborhood bike shop. I really like the way all of the staff are interested in engaging with customers of all knowledge and skill level to make biking exciting for everyone. There's a real attempt to meeting customers' needs and to educate people on bike performance and maintenance. There are no "dumb" questions with these folks. I had a recent experience with a stripped crank arm (at the pedal) that Griffen solved and me understand how it could have happened so long after I had switched out pedals. The long winded story: I recently went in with a bike (which I know isn't worth that much) that needed to be fixed, and I felt Bert (apparently the manager) was very honest with me and answered all my questions about the cost of repair and whether it was actually worth paying to repair the bike. When I asked about the minimum cost to fix the bike, he did not try to push me to pay for extra things, but was honest about what the minimum was to get the bike in working order. In the end, I decided to instead purchase one of the used bikes (one much sturdier than the cheapo one I had) in the store, which cost just a little more than if I had decided to fix up the cheapo bike I had. Bert offered 1 month of free tune-ups. The bottom line: no-frills mom & pop bike shop that seems honest. They do sell some bikes and accessories, but it seems you would most likely come hear for bike repair/adjustment. read more

Crazy expensive! I paid $50 to get my breaks tightened. Nothing new added, no special equipment. Took the guy less than 5 min (so that was at least good) and charged me more than my DC shop did to replace my shift and break cables later that day. Excellent little bike shop in downtown Bethesda. This place exudes craftsmanship, attention to detail, and service. The people who work there clearly love bicycles, and this is shown in the care that they put into the work that I've had done on my bike for the last couple of years. As a sport, cycling has had a surge in popularity lately to the point that I think some people may feel intimidated by both the prices of not just bikes but also clothing, but this place makes someone feel very comfortable and at home, whether it's their first time in a bike shop (I've recommended the place to many of my friends who have become interested in biking), or if they're more seasoned in the sport/hobby. They can also order higher end items for you if they don't have it in the store. This is the kind of place that I stop in to just to say hello when I'm riding through the area. read more

I called Griffin Cycle to inquire about their bicycles and obtain general information before purchasing a bike. This is a new hobby for me, which I explained on the phone. I was hoping the shop could help me find a bike that suited my needs. The gentleman who answered the phone was quite disinterested in my questions and asked me if I was aware that there was a national bike shortage. It seemed as if my questions were an imposition to him. I ended the call and will look for another bike shop to purchase a bicycle. I went into this store desperate to fix my bike during COVID-19 times. I was absolutely impressed by the customer care and attention I was given since the bike industry has been VERY busy during COVID. They completely noticed a problem with my handlebars (that was given my hands a lot of stress) and came up with a solution. I would never have been able to notice the problem if I had not brought in my road bike, so I am so grateful! They ordered a new stem for my handlebars and installed it the day it shipped to their store (took about 3 days to ship). They also gave me a lot of tips on racing clubs, bike care, and proper bike adjustment. The store is kept very clean, and I did not get any bike grease on my clothing or skin (which is VERY hard to scrub off!). They also remembered my name the second time I came into the store which is VERY rare for people to do these days! I am such a satisfied customer and I highly recommend them! read more

Despite extraordinary complications right now (COVID 19, heat, requests for help with biked that have lived in the basement for decades), this team is gracious, skilled, and quick. This business was speedy, thorough, and affordable when I got my bike repaired after a crash. Off of Bethesda avenue, they put my bike up once I got it into the building, figured out what was wrong with it (my gears kind of got crushed), found some other problems it had, and gave me an estimate. Given my novice reentry into cycling in my early 60s, Griffin sales people offered me two levels of Trek bikes to try out on neighborhood streets. I came back a second time to confirm whether I was more comfortable with a simple nine speed or 18 speed dual derailleur. I also bought cycling shoes, shorts and shirt with which I'm satisfied. I went to a big store and got some pricing and then decided to go to my local shop to compare prices. Surprisingly, the small local shop had better prices. I recently moved to the area and had my bike shipped from my old home on the west coast to my new home in Maryland. I took my bike into Griffin cycle to get a tune up and possible derailleur fix. The bike mechanic did a minor adjustment to the derailleur at no cost. My bike is old and he said a tune up wouldn't make it work much better and suggested I pass on the tune up. If you are a boy racer or aficionado, go to Conte's for museum grade stuff, but if you need solid, commuter/weekender bike work done in downtown Bethesda, go here. I took my son's Burley Piccolo in because of grinding noises and spontaneous derailing. It took two tries but they successfully diagnosed and fixed it - sticking freewheel - by actually fixing it, not replacing it. Friendly, great customer service, and good bike service. I wish I had started, as well as ended, my search for a good bike shop here. read more

Fantastic little family run store. While they aren't as large or stocked as some of the larger places, they do still have inventory online, friendly and helpful service, and a decent supply of stuff in store, with the ability to order more items. I bought a Trek hybird bike there earlier this year after some deliberating between a few places. They were good about test rides and did a decent job fitting me. Once I made the decision on a Trek, I went with Griffin since they had not only the lowest price (same as another store I liked and almost went with), but also offer free tune-ups for 18 months. Given that I'm a casual rider, and haven't done a lot of bike maintenance in over 10 years (and bikes have changed!), this won it over for me. They were fast and friendly about putting accessories on the bike right when I bought it. I'll definitely be taking my bike there for maintenance, and buying more in the future. read more
