Took bike in for a tune-up Friday, July 5th. Was told bike would be ready in 2 days. Called Sunday and was told bike would not be ready until Tuesday. I walked in Tuesday morning at 10am and bike was not touched yet. I received a phone call 2 hours later at 12pm saying the bike was ready for pick-up. Owner charged me $150. No new replacements were needed. I was expecting to pay no more than $100 especially since the shop did not keep their word and I had to wait 4 days for a job I am sure took way under 2 hours. Didn't appreciate how he took care of me. Won't be going back to this shop. Fair warning to all future customers. There are better bike shops in the area. read more

Just went to check on bikes for my mother and the door was locked. The store clerk came to the door and asked what I wanted basically. Uh...maybe to look around for a bike?!? He says he doesn't really want people in there. Meanwhile, there is a white man in the store browsing. I point to the man inside and the clerk says again that he really doesn't want people in there. Yeah...ok, no problem. (I'm black) and yes, I had a mask. No worries, we will take our money elsewhere! Rude as hell. Wow. Terrible. Then he left three people in after me. read more

Went in to ask about replacing the tire on a bike. You can tell whoever worked there very much cared about bikes as he was reasonably aghast at the bike we brought in lol (we'd used it for 7 years without any repairs). Communication was..confusing but he was no-nonsense and very clear about everything, except he joked a lot and we weren't sure if he was actually joking or giving us criticism passively. He said it'd be around $47 to change a tire, which seemed reasonable but we decided to just buy a new bike in the end since the original bike was cheap anyway. Only thing that bothered me was that he told us to speak English while we were talking among ourselves in another language. It was likely partly our fault for being too loud and not clear on what we were asking for. It felt like we weren't the type of people who should be walking into the shop. But he was still accommodating as he had disassembled the bike, let us know what the problem was, how much it would be, and helped us get the bike out of the shop. Anyway it was quite an experience and if you're well versed in bikes then it should be good for you. read more

I called to find out how much a tune up was. We have 2 adult and 1 kid bike. He acted like I was asking a super difficult question. Most bike shops have a standard tune up rate and list of things if includes. He wanted me to load up the bikes and bring them in so he could look them over to get a rate. Easy to read between the lines that he wants to charge me as much as possible and after I've done the work of bringing the bikes in, I'll be more likely to pay his overpriced charges. He hedged and finally said his base price starts at $100. That rather expensive, especially considering he clearly will be charging us more. Were not riding expensive bikes. Ridiculous. Just want a little tune up. We'll go elsewhere. read more

I had some great service from this bike shop. I ordered a mountain bike online and it was received unassembled. I took my bike to Andes to have it assembled. The cost was good compared to the other bike shops in the area. They estimated that the bike would be completed next day; but they were able to complete it same days. I needed a bike helmet for my toddler, and the folks here were super helpful! I called in advance, and they let me know what was in stock and available. Some friends and I were on a long bikepacking tour and two (yes two) of our rear racks came unbolted within a few minutes of eachother. We managed to zip tie them together and started hunting for the nearest bike shop. When we got to Andes, we were helped despite coming in a few minutes before closing. Gave him my card and he returned with a surcharge for using a credit card of $0.85 -- which he didn't tell me he was going to do before taking my card. This is a fantastic bike shop. They are primarily focused on service, and the Oscars (Dad and Son) are both deeply knowledgable and skillful with bike repairs up the the highest levels. I plan to take all my servicing needs there. And, while there stock of new bikes is limited, I think they can source and order most anything, as well as build up any custom bike. I stopped in to this new shop to have a wheel trued. They had the wheel back to me in no time. And they found a broken spoke that needed to be repaired. The price was very reasonable. The 2 owners, Oscar Sr. and Oscar Jr. are really nice guys. Very friendly and just getting started out. He's adding parts and supplies as the shop opened about 6 weeks ago. They'll have some bikes for sale but they see themselves more for bike repairs, parts and accessories than bike sales. They know what they're doing, they're local. Give them a chance. read more

I took my nephew to this bike shop to get a bell and kickstand for his new bike. This gentleman (who I later found out is the owner) offered to install the kickstand, only to tell me as he was tightening the last screw, that he charged $10 for installation. I couldnt believe how sneaky this was. I have been biking for 20 years in DC and there is not even one bike shop for charges for installation of small items purchased (bell, kickstand, water bottle holder, etc.) When I told him that he should have mentioned the installation charge prior to beginning, he just said "I need to pay my rent". On the way out, I asked him to take a look at the bike rack that I just installed in order to bring my nephew's bike to the shop, he said it wasn't a problem. He took a look, re-wrapped a strap and then when I went back inside to pay, he just charged me (without even telling me!) $5 for "fixing" my bike rack. I couldn't believe this, and again..he just looked at me with a bike smile and said "time is money" and "I need to pay my rent". I paid and wished him luck with his business. Luckily, I live in Washington DC where there are tons of bicycle shops that are honest and I dont have to return to this place. If he is having that much trouble paying his rent, he should raise his prices or at a minimum, inform customers of his charges beforehand. Gaithersburg residents be warned of this sneaky businessman, take your money elsewhere. read more

I stepped out of line and drove to Andes bike shop in Gaithersburg. Oscar and his father, Oscar Sr., are there 7 days a week, specializing in bike repairs. After the bigger bicycle chain store told me it was going to be a month for them to even take a look at my bike for a tune up, I turned to Yelp to find another bike store and found Andes Bike Shop. They were able to take my bike right away and after a kept promise of a week later, I picked up my shiny all tuned up bike. They did a great job of servicing my bike and cleaned it up very nicely. Andes Bike Shop is fabulous! They are customer friendly and really know about fixing and repairing bikes. We took a bike in with a chain that busted after 4K miles of riding in all weather. Because of the reviews, I decided to take my bike here for repair. All I needed was new inner tubings which I was told was about $7 each but got talked into doing the service which was supposed to be inclusive of replacing the tubings, tune up, brakes, etc...I agreed to the all inclusive tune up charge. Long story short, I should have asked for it to be written down because I got charged extra $38 on top of the $90 and when I asked about it, the owner was very rude and accused me of trying to rip him off! Good experience getting all of my cables replaced, love their small shop feel, customer service and prices. Only problem was the turn around time was several days longer than expected. That said even the delay was shorter than the turn around I was quoted in Germantown and elsewhere. Fortunately I was out of town so no harm no foul. I'll be going back to Andes. read more
