I haven't owned a bicycle in 8-10 years, and recently quit my gym membership to start running, biking outside instead. I have very minimal knowledge about biking, purchases, etc. I knew I wanted a Trek bike and Trek's website says to go to either Griffin or one other DC shop. Since Griffin is a family-owned shop, I thought I'd give it a shot. These folks were super helpful over the phone when I called to inquire about the bike I wanted (which was already in stock), so I was able to put it on hold and come take a look after work. Conveniently located near Bethesda Metro, this place is easy to find and is open until 7:00 pm. From the time I walked through the door to the time I picked up my bike today, the customer service was spot on. (Ask for Kate!) My bike was fitted perfectly to my needs, along with a few add ons and a bike lock. I was even able to pay on two separate cards (one over the phone). Great location in downtown Bethesda, Griffin Cycle has given me and my family excellent, personal service over 25 years. I stopped in a few weeks ago after many years of not riding for a bike checkup. After finishing up the bike he was then tuning, the mechanic immediately put my bike on the rack, filled its tires, gave it a good once-over and off I went. He even helped me load my bike in my car. Summary: This place is both incompetent and dishonest. They installed the wrong part (at great expense) and didn't perform a tune-up that they charged me for. I brought in an oldish neglected bike for a tune-up and asked what else they recommended. They said new chain a rear cassette. I said fine. The price tag was $270, which seemed high, but I was willing to pay based on positive Yelp reviews. I now know that price was insane. I picked up the bike and went for a ride. It rode like a freight train and shifted very poorly. When I took it back, the guy quickly admitted that it was not shifting properly but took some prompting to admit that they had put the wrong cassette on. He agreed to put the right part on. When I picked it up the second time, the rear shifting seemed right, but the front shifting is now off. Sometimes it does not shift at all and sometimes it skips over the middle gear entirely. I wanted to be nice and give the benefit of the doubt. People make mistakes, so putting on the wrong part is not great, but it does happen. The problem is that doing a tune-up immediately detects problems like having the wrong cassette or improper shifting on the front gears. So they didn't just make a ridiculously stupid mistake on the rear cassette, they also charged me for a tune-up they never did that would have instantly revealed that mistake and allowed them to fix it. 1. Incompetent. 2. Dishonest. It's hard to find a good bike shop. Keep looking. read more

I did not know the person who was helping me was Mr. Griffin, the owner of the store. But he was very friendly and customer service oriented. He helped me fix something on my bike that was simple yet he still did it complementary because of his customer service mindset. He knows that I'll be a returning customer whenever I need anything. The new service process, even for regular tune-ups, which requires two appointments (the first for them to look at the bike and then schedule the second) is ridiculously inconvenient. Never experienced anything like it in the past either there or anywhere else with any of my bikes. Usually, you bring your bike in at appointed time, and you are given an estimated pick-up time unless something unexpected needs to be done or a part needs to be ordered. The delay at pick up is typically an understood risk of dropping off your bike for a tune-up. This new process they have is just needlessly inconvenient. Also, the wait at the service desk was way too long as the service manager does his examination of every bike that comes in for the first appointment. Should be a quick once over and then follow up later by phone if something requiring special attention if found. read more

My first time to Griffin Cycle and the team was very friendly, knowledgable, and provided great service. I bought a helmet, training wheels, and new grips for a bike my 4 year old got from our neighbor. I had to return a box of training wheels that seemed like they were returned once before because there were bolts missing and the bag with them had been opened. Kate apologized, took great care of the return, exchanged it for a new box and had the wheels installed on the bike at no charge. Would absolutely go back when we buy new bikes. read more

Alex helped me find solutions to really specific commuting problems I had. He introduced me to solutions I didn't even know existed. Then he mounted everything to my bike for me, which was such a relief. The shop seems to have only high quality, well-thought through products. Not an enormous selection, but it seems they have already separated "the wheat from the chaff", which saves time. The staff and Family owned shop has been there for years. They are always ready to help and although I have visited less since the pandemic, it is nice to know they are ready to help. I was given an estimate of $180 for parts/labor to change out the rear wheel cassette, replace left and right shifters, and some additional work. I was presented with a $255 dollar bill for those repairs: over 40% above the estimate. Handing me the credit card bill as I was making friendly conversation, the owner just said "Come on, sign it", and then went back to whatever was more important to him once I signed. These guys rock! I bring my bikes for fixes, to get new accessories, I bring my friends to buy bikes basically because they are the best in the area. They tell you what you need and not trying to sell you stuff you don't need. I have enjoyed talking to each and every one of them and learned a lot every time I stop by. I find excuses to go to downtown Bethesda have the rest of family shopping elsewhere to consult about a gear or an equipment and then if they don't have it they can order it for you. The mechanics know their stuff, the sales people know the products and you get the best possible service. I have been to most bikes shops in the area some don't even offer you test rides, to fancier bike shops to test ride the bikes they carry when they haven't even tighten all the screws on the bikes. I have never been denied a test ride here. I am not sure what I can add here but if you need anything related to bikes this is the place you want to go. read more

Just as I rolled into Bethesda I knew something was wrong. I checked Yelp which led me to Griffin Cycle. The people there diagnosed my broken spoke. It was 15 minutes before closing and a repair was out of the question. They came up with a work around that allowed me to ride home safely to Arlington. I put down a "refundable" deposit on a bike. When I realized I couldn't afford it they refused to return the whole deposit. I had never signed any paperwork saying anything about keeping a portion of the deposit if the bike hadn't been purchased by X date. Rip off. read more

I recently sold my old 1980s Peugeot road bike so that I could get something a bit more upright. It was suggested I head to Griffin Cycle to check out their collection. This family-run establishment is definitely a great shop. Nick Griffin helped me navigate my way through the selection they have. He is very, very knowledgeable about the bikes themselves and their various components. He also was able to explain things to me in a manner in which I understood, so there was none of that pretentious bike talk that I have sometimes experienced at other shops. The shop itself is about a 10 minute walk from the Bethesda metro, which ,makes it very convenient. I ended up not buying my bike there, as I decided on a model different from what they carry. If that wasn't the case, I would have got my bike there. I will probably make the trip to Bethesda from DC if I ever need a tune up or questions answered, too! read more

Good experience here, I am a beginner to the biking world and the service was good. They let me test drive any bike I wanted to and they also helped me get fitted for a bike and help Me know what to look for. I recommend this place especially for the non extreme bikers.
