Had read about their signature cocktail the Nitrotini on previous reviews and wanted to try that. We ordered 2 espresso Nitrotini's- WOW I wanted at least 3 more of those boys! But I knew we were there dinner. We started with escargot and French onion soup. Both were delish! Next up we ordered the 3lb Maine Lobster with asparagus and scallops with shiitake mushrooms. Both main entrees were not only presented gorgeous but tasted fantastic. For dessert we shared the vanilla crème brûlée and an after dinner drink of grand mariner. The service was nonstop. This dining experience was amazing! We were on our honeymoon! The food was extremely delicious! We had the oysters Rockefeller and they were superb! We had the chilled wedge iceberg salad. It was very fresh, very tasty and a really nice crunch to it. We had the shrimp and grits! Listen, do yourself a favor and order the shrimp and grits! They were savory and rich! I absolutely love Grill 225. I've come for drinks, dinner, restaurant week, and dessert. They have a lovely rooftop bar. However, you cannot get the nitrotini up there. You have to be in the main bar or dining room to get that. If for nothing else I highly suggest coming here to the nitrotini. The only drink I've ever had with a warning label that comes out smoking! So many flavors too. I highly suggest the cotton candy one, it makes for fun photos! My best friend and I came for Restaurant week because the prices are significantly more reasonable during that time. We got an $80 filet for $40. Keep in mind, if you're going to eat here, you need a reservation hands down. Especially during restaurant week. If you're just going to the bar, you don't. They will do special requests if you have a special occasion you are trying to plan. This place is definitely a classy joint, so you need to be dressed in nice attire. Let just say there is nothing wrong with the restaurant, food or service. All were on par but compared to other places in Charleston it is average. Let's work through the details. We started on the rooftop bar. Nice views of the bridge and the rooftops. This is a classic steakhouse with all the usual accruements - mahogany covered walls, heavy chairs, big knives and aged waiters in white frocks, and of course the appropriately inflated prices. Amazing dinner. I can't remember our server's name but he was fantastic. We came for the steak but of course the nitrotini drinks are a big attraction. I'm pregnant and our server went out of his way to have a mocktail version of one made for me when my husband ordered one. It's little things like that that push service over the top. My wife and I have been coming to Charleston for 20 years. We have watched the progression of restaurants and their advance up King Street. The standards of food quality and service have truly escalated to a city of fine dining. Three night and our last night, we decided to dine at an old friend, Grill 225. Cocktails at the bar to start, ok, but slow table service. The bar was full, and there was no seating. Drinks were good, and we moved to the dining room Started with great bread! The mussels came they were very tasty, well salted. We mentioned this to our waiter. Then the lamb chops arrived with a tomato toped with spinach. Our expectations were high as the Chops we priced very high, more than a USDA prime filet. We had ordered medium! The disappointment was unbearable as 75% fatty chops arrived, chared as if they tried and covered up the lack of protein! We told the waiter, informed a manager, and even mentioned to another manager! Their attitude was sorry, but frankly, their lack of interest was very apparent. They removed the cost of the Chops, but that wasn't the point nore our expectations. There was no suggestion of a replacement or substitute protein! Our Visit -They do not have a private parking lot but they do offer parking validation if needed. -The dinning area has a very romantic feel with dim lighting and candles. -Our waiter was super knowledgeable and very friendly. -We ordered the fried calamari and she crab soup for appetizers. For our entree we ordered the T-Bone and scallops with a side of asparagus and a baked potato. Our desert was the Southern Peach Cobbler. My Review Our food was cooked to perfection, unfortunately I can't say the same about the seasoning. My calamari was not only under seasoned, it was also very greasy. The scallops although cooked perfectly, were very bland and some of them weren't cleaned correctly. My best friend had the steak and he was overly impressed and loved it. The peach cobbler was amazing and honestly my favorite part of the meal. Lastly although our waiter was super nice I became really annoyed at the fact that my drink was never refilled throughout our meal. Overall, I wish I could give this place 5 stars but unfortunately my experience was not anything I was hoping for. For a restaurant with such prestige I felt that they cut corners on quality and every dish we ordered with some type of sauce was swimming in it. I don't mind sauces but I don't like my food wet & drowning in it. I was also really disappointed with the lobster! I had to send the first one back because it was under cooked & swimming in the scampi sauce. When they brought the second one I got the picatta sauce on the side. The piccata sauce had a strange flavor so I just got clarified butter for dipping. Also I felt that they could have done more with the lobster instead of "dressing" it with lettuce for garnish they could have prepared it with vegetables, rice or potatoes that you could eat if they wanted to make it more substantial. I'm writing this review based on my visit back in the spring. The service was amazing. I came to the city to celebrate my birthday and noted that in my reservation. I also noted that even though I wanted a solo reservation, I wanted to be seated in an area of the restaurant that wasn't at the center of everything, but also not tucked away and hidden. The restaurant interior was beautiful and I loved my seating selection. I was near the kitchen, but I could still see out of the window and observe everyone inside the restaurant. My waiter was very pleasant. I ordered what you see in the attached photo along with the yonges island salad and then cheesecake for dessert. The food was so good. And I, for the life of me, don't remember what wine I ordered. He may have recommended something for me, but either way, I enjoyed that as well. Great portions too! I was able to take some leftovers back to my hotel. They also decorated my cheesecake in celebration of my birthday which was thoughtful. Once you get to the door, you know you're in for a treat. We were greeted by one of the 2 doormen and kindly directed to the restaurant. Once inside, the space exudes fine dining. The staff are some of the finest dressed in the city, which amps up the high end feel. My Wife (of 11 years) and I, each ordered a Nitortini. This is their signature Martini, but with liquid nitrogen poured in, to make the drink smoke on the way out from the bar. I picked the French 225. With the gin, elderflower, lemon and liquid nitrogen, it was exciting and refreshing. Make sure to take a video ASAP before the magic disappears. I am not a huge fan of pre-meal bread, as it generally takes stomach room away from the main courses, but they have a nice assortment of breads. All of them were good in their own way. We both ordered the French Onion Soup. It comes in a beautiful bowl, covered in a perfect blanket of cheese. Underneath is an abundance of flavor. It's the best French Onion I've had in a while. My choice of the Caesar Salad was a mistake, but fortunately the only one of the night. I feel like this classically simple salad missed the mark. I also wish Chefs would stop using cylindrical molds for food, as it always reminds me of canned pet food. =/ I ended up being way to full before the main came out, so I'd probably skip the salad next time anyway. We shared this with waitress and it was taken off bill, but she had attitude when dropping off bill. Eeny, meeny, miny, moe, to which steakhouse should I go? If you're pondering this question, my recommendation is put Grill 225 at the top of your list and make a reservation. You will be happy you did. Grill 225 resides within the prestigious Market Pavilion Hotel. There's valet, street, and a 2 parking lots within a block. Grill 225 has the look, feel and workings of a traditional steak house. There's a nice bar with additional seating nearby and a rooftop bar that's an elevator call away. If you aren't into a loud dining experience where the occupants of one crammed table after another talk over each other, and the only conversation you hear is someone else's, this restaurant is for you. Tables here are adequately distanced from one another, which means your own conversation isn't drowned out by someone else's. You can reserve one of the circular, high back booths not found elsewhere for an added touch of privacy. Grill 225 is on one floor, not two, so there are no stairs to navigate and little chance for an ER visit from falling down a flight of them. The one floor here isn't rickety old wood that creeks and has your table moving every time a patron or server stomps by. It's a solid, soundless elegant wood floor that shines like the fine crystal and silverware that adorn the fine linen tablecloths. Unlike other Charleston restaurants that were converted from a home built by someone's great grand pappy, you won't find yourself seated at a table that's situated in what was once someone's closet. There's isn't any obscure seating here, so you never feel like you're banished to the ugly stepchild table. The staff here are seasoned, attentive, consummate professionals. As for the food, it's five stars. The menu has an abundant selection of wines, specialty drinks and consists primarily of a combination of steak and seafood that's perfectly complimented with an adequate selection of appetizers, salads, entrees and family style side items and desserts. We chose to intentionally over-order to have the opportunity to try a number of things that sounded good. We were brought a complimentary selection of freshly baked, specialty breads that were accompanied with a generous swath of butter. First up, we ordered the French onion soup. In all honesty, we couldn't tell if it was as good as the best French onion soup we've ever had, or it was the best French onion soup we've ever had. Next was a whole, sliced, diced and made perfectly nice, chilled lobster cocktail with two dipping sauces. No work to do here just fork, dip, and enjoy. This was something to write home to mom about but since she no longer with us, I settled on posting a review. The chopped salad was nicely chilled, well prepared, and tasty. I'm not a big salad eater, but I took one for the team. The wife had the Pan Seared Local Flounder which was prepared to perfection. As a main course, I had the filet done medium. The steak was as tender as it was tasty and was cooked spot on, which definitely isn't what you may find from the competition. Not naming names, but it's not uncommon to have to send your steak back elsewhere because it's more mooing, than medium. The baked potato put me in mind of a football that was large enough to give Tom Brady's throwing arm a run for its money. We weren't wild about the sautéed spinach, but at that point, who had room for it? While we threw the spinach under the bus over the guise of bulging bellies, the wife wasn't willing to retreat without dessert. I think there must be an occasional problem in the kitchen. I had an over cooked steak as I see others have had. Not a big problem as they were happy to bring a new one, but the second was very rare rather than medium rare. Too bad. The calamari we ordered as an appetizer was some of the best I have had, and the assortment of bread served prior to dinner was just delightful. I ordered the filet mignon and it was cooked beautifully and the lobster tail served on top of it was just magnificent! The horseradish cream sauce went perfectly with the filet and the side dish of Brussels sprouts were cooked wonderfully. After dinner we shared a slice of the chocolate mousse cake and it was marvelous. The slice of chocolate mouse was the best I have had in my life, hands down. My first question after eating at Grill 225 is - Can you be addicted to brussel sprouts?! After eating them here, I can confidently say that yes, yes you can. Ok backing up now.. So we went here for my boyfriend's birthday and weren't exactly greeted because I believe there are people in and out of there all the time since it also serves as a hotel. Regardless, we made eye contact with the hostess and she wasn't overly friendly but got us to our table regardless. I'm not looking for someone to wait on me hand and foot but just some acknowledgement would have been nice when we walked through the door looking lost. All the servers were amazing and friendly and we were served complimentary champagne for his birthday. They had a good variety of different options and had a lot of gluten free options available. We were there early so there weren't many people there yet but the atmosphere was upscale and formal and perfect for a night when you want to treat yourself. They served us complimentary bread with multiple kinds and even had gluten free bread that did not taste gluten free at all and was different than any other gluten free bread we had every tried. There were two pretzel buns, one that was like a cinnamon raisin with nuts in it, a braided roll with poppy seeds, bread with some tomatoes, and a baguette. These were all tasty. The cinnamon raisin bread was a little dry but other than that I enjoyed having the variety of different bread to try. I ordered the vegan cassoulet and my boyfriend ordered the 18oz ribeye and we got the the fire roasted brussel sprouts (mentioned earlier) and the jumbo mushrooms for our family style sides to share. The cassoulet was very good and I appreciated the vegan option with non dairy cheese. It had beans, eggplant, zucchini and other vegetables in a tomato sauce and had a lot of flavor to it. My boyfriend very much enjoyed the ribeye which was tender and juicy on the inside and beautifully charred on the outside. The mushrooms were tasty as well and definitely jumbo sized. The fire roasted brussel sprouts were amazing and I could absolutely taste the fire. They were cooked perfectly and the sauce that came with them could not have been better. It was had soy, orange, and cinnamon in it, which I was skeptical about at first but boy was I more than pleasantly surprised. We were both happily stuffed after eating maybe only half of everything we ordered. After we were done eating it seemed to have been a very long time before our waitress came back out to check on us. The very long time was followed by more waiting before we were promptly given the dessert menu, respectfully declined (only due to being full), wrapped up our leftovers and headed out. This place is beyond fantastic. Started out with a meal at the downstairs restaurant. Everything was great. Food, drinks, and service were stellar. We had filet mignon, crab cakes, creamed spinach, and corn with jalapeños and cheddar. Mixed in a few of their signature nitrotinis mixed in here and there. After a great dinner, went up to the roof top bar to enjoy a few more drinks. All seating was full, but Justin, the bartender, took care of us until we were able to find a seat. The views, drinks, and atmosphere were all great, but employees like Justin are what ultimately led me to write this review.
