So all of the flavor has to come from the topping and while 2 out of the 3 we tried today were well flavored, they could have had more topping. Lemon poppy was our favorite. I had heard many promising things about Grindstone and was excited to try them after a day exploring Sag Harbor. We had decided to grab coffee and doughnuts prior to our nearly two hour drive home. We were there toward the end of their business hours so they only had two doughnuts available: glazed and sesame. I decided to go with the sesame and my boyfriend got the glazed. For drinks I had the honey latte and he had a regular coffee. They serve Oatly here, which is nice for those of us who try to stay away from dairy, but it's a large additional cost. My latte was excellent and just what I needed after a day of exploring. My doughnut was far too sweet but maybe that's because I lack a sweet tooth. I also reevaluated my receipt since I did not remember spending as much as I did and found the prices to be rather pricey. Best doughnuts ever! Grindstone was on several recommended lists we researched before our trip to Sag Harbor, so it was our first breakfast stop. Big crowd on Labor Day weekend, long line out the door, but worth the wait. We got blueberry jelly filled glazed, and cinnamon sugar. Amazing flavor, delicate crispy exterior and fluffy, wonderful interior. Filling was scratch made blueberry jelly and I got some in every mouthful. If you look up their website, it says they use a 2 day proofing process on their dough, the care they put into the doughnuts really shows. There isn't any seating, but we took ours to the several benches that are scattered around the windmill just a few feet away. We had a little problem with bees (why are there so many bees in Sag Harbor?), but otherwise very enjoyable. Friend said coffee was very good, they have a ton of options, oat milk etc. I had ice tea which was fine for me. I craved these doughnuts our entire trip, a must to stop here if you are visiting. read more

I have to say I am very glad that I gave this place another shot! Last time I got their matcha latte they were new at making it and it honeslty was not the best. This time around.... WOAH! You can even tell in the pictures I posted with this review how awesome they are! They taste just as good as they look and I was very pleased at the updated recipe/technique in which they make their matcha lattes. No clumps of matcha, not too watery and had it a really genuine flavor! FYI it is not sweetened however so if that's your thing just be sure to add some sugar before you leave. Another cool aspect of this place was that the day that I went a woman was giving tarot card readings in the corner. I did a search for the best donut shops in Eastern Long Island, and Grindstone scored well over a 4. Though I live over 60 miles away, I was in Southampton on an IT job and figured I'd check this place out! As it happened, my trip to Grindstone was not in vain! Though three hours before they closed limited my donut selection, I was nonetheless able to get a good sample of what this place is all about, and they're all about freshness, quality, and taste! Tale of the tape: Peanut Butter Mocha iced coffee When the very helpful store associate told me that they had peanut butter infused into the steamed milk, I was all in and had to check out this (at first linguistically, then tastefully) compelling coffee creation! The peanut butter and chocolate flavors blended well, with the peanut butter leaving a pleasant aftertaste to the sip. Very unique and a pleasant surprise! Hot Chocolate The sign outside read "Hot Chocolate - La Sauce de Monin." This "La Sauce" makes an excellent base for hot chocolate, with a very deep and, dare I say, sincere chocolate taste which was much better than the hot chocolate I had a few hours earlier from Tate's Bake Shop (see my review, and please forgive the run-on sentence!). Besides the chocolate, this hot beverage had a decent viscosity and culinary "heft" that made it very enjoyable and a must try when you visit Grindstone! Chocolate Cake Donut Basic chocolate donut with a glazed coating, but it's way beyond anything you've ever had before in a donut of this kind. You know it's not one of those donuts you "dunk," as the glaze doesn't cover the very bottom of the donut, the part that was in contact with the prep surface. No, the thin glaze coating is lovingly but deliberately "painted" and drizzled down the sides to coat as much of the outer surface as possible. This results in a donut that is not too sweet, and allows the unique and true cake texture, and the pronounced chocolate flavor to come through. Chocolate Banana Cream Donut Soft hollow donut filled with banana custard cream, topped with chocolate ganache and sprinkled with banana crumbs (at least, that's what they looked like - as if they were from the top of a banana crumb cake. See my photo). They were out of Boston Cream, so this was their closest substitute - and what a sub it was! Even near the end of their day the donut was fresh, and the custard had a full, rich flavor and creamy texture. The banana flavor, while not pronounced, was there and enjoyable nonetheless. Whew - too bad I bought only one of these masterpieces . . . ! Churro Donut Soft hollow donut filled with custard cream, dusted in cinnamon sugar and drizzled with chocolate. Another substitute to the Boston Cream, but with a few twists. Very good, but I still want to try their Boston Cream! Dark Chocolate Donut Soft basic donut topped with dark chocolate ganache and sprinkled with dark chocolate crunchies. I usually don't go for the more basic donut types, but as my selection was limited I also chose the Dark Chocolate donut. The donut itself was still fresh, but what made this stand out was the deep and rich flavor of the chocolate. Conclusion Grindstone is a true donut shop in the full sense of the phrase! Everything is made fresh onsite, and the quality shows in the taste. Come for the freshness, and stay for the chocolate, which was consistently awesome across the four donuts I sampled. I don't quite understand the few negative reviews here - did these people not taste the chocolate or perceive the freshness? Maybe their idea of good chocolate is Frankford, or perhaps Palmer?? Everything I had at Grindstone transported me instantly on a taste excursion from which I did not want to return! Whew - this definitely isn't a place where you're just "dunkin" your donuts . . . ! First time in Sag Harbor and heard I needed to check this place out. Got my obligatory coffee (iced cappuccino) and donut (Nutella S'mores) and was definitely impressed. The coffee was smooth and didn't even need any sweetener. They have so many coffee and milk options, and then of course donuts and baked goods that all just looked incredible. My donut was huge and fluffy and still warm. The toasted marshmallow at the top was literally melting into the Nutella as I was eating- just like a real S'more. I'm a chocohaulic, but they had all sorts of donut flavors - cinnamon, fruit, and other baked goods like lemon bars and brownies. A sweet treat worth a pop in. Spent 5 days renting a house near here. My morning must start with an espresso.. well this place was a god send.. Service was always friendly and with smiles. Going the extra mile, except for our last day I had asked for 3 small coffees, and an espresso. They handed me the coffees with no lids or carrying case. Just sort of plopped them in front of me took payment and walked.. Every other day they gave me lids and carrying case What made this ever odder was I was the only one there . This donut shop's got major cool vibes! From the decor to the service to the food, I've got no axe to grind... I tried the apple cider donut. Unlike most apple cider donuts that I've had, this one included a light frosting drizzle on top which was delicious and added an extra oomph. Warning... it is messy to eat! Super emphasis on the "donuts" part of Grindstone Coffee & Donuts since I can easily say I had the best donut of my life there. A friend and I split the passion fruit donut (come with a healthy appetite if you want to crush one by yourself, they're huge!). It was so fruity and unique. The donuts are cakey and moist and go perfectly with a cold brew. I will say I wasn't blown away by their coffee. Having tried it both in-house and brewed at home, it was nothing special. My friend and I came here during the summer when we vacationed in the Hamptons, and it was so good we came twice. It's been some time so I can't remember exactly, but I do know the coffees and lattes were pretty bomb. First and foremost, I judge all doughnuts against those I've had at NYC's Doughnut Plant. I had the opportunity to stay in Sag Harbor just down the street from Grindstone. In fact, prior to the trip to Sag Harbor, I had researched my lunch, dinner and snack options. I came across Grindstone's IG page and started salivating at some of their doughy creations. Then came the day where I walked into the small, colourful shop located conveniently on Main St, and for aesthetics, the Harbor itself. The menu isn't expansive. It's not Dunkin. When I visited, 3 days straight as part of my morning routine by the way, there may have been about 5 or 6 doughnut varieties on display. I love the fact that they have both cake and yeast doughnuts as I prefer cake. I had this seasons hottest and trendiest doughnut; the pumpkin spice glazed doughnut (look, it was early November and my inner basic b hadn't made an appearance yet.) The doughnut was light and fluffy. The flavours of pumpkin, cinnamon and nutmeg were on point- none of which were overpowering or competing with each other. I washed it down with one of their seasonal lattes. I tend to drink Starbucks a lot so I appreciated Grindhouse's latte because it didn't have that over roasted coffee bean flavour that I tend to taste with Starbucks. The next few days I had a Nutella doughnut and what I believe was a chocolate cake doughnut with salted caramel on top. These were good but I prefer the pumpkin spice because it had ingredients which cut the sweetness making it more balanced for my taste. The neighbourhood is beautiful. The doughnuts and coffee are great which makes this place a bit of a gem to me. I don't get out to Sag Harbor often but I will be sure to stop in again at Grindhouse whenever I visit next. read more
