The only reason why I didn't give this place 5 stars was because yes they make their own pasta, but they don't cook it there at all. Though we did try the Stallion and the Paris sandwiches. His Stallion was full of deli meat of salami and that ciabatta bread is amazing! I absolutely loved my Paris sandwich which had ham, caramelized onions, and slices of Brie all melted together. My wife and I managed to sneak away from our toddler for a bit-- she was at her aunt's house; so panicking!-- so that we could make our yearly pilgrimage to AcadeCon, Dayton's finest gaming convention. But, with limited selection in the convention center, we elected to take a walk come dinner time and head down 5th Street. Grist is directly adjoining to The Spaghetti Warehouse, which was packed that Saturday, with people streaming out onto the chilly sidewalks. Not 30 feet down the street, Grist was almost seated when we arrived. And wow. If you want quality, handmade pasta? If you want meatballs that make you swear with bliss with each bite? If you want desserts so phenomenal that you'll be begging for more? Skip the Warehouse. Go to Grist and never look back. We were seated almost immediately and attended to like an Italian grandmother. The black pepper foccacia we ordered came out within minutes, and absolutely blew me away with its freshness, bite, and a slathering of hand-salted butter. My meatballs were among the best I've eaten, second only to Emporio in Pittsburgh. The sauce they were in, though? The perfect balance of acid, sweetness, and back heat from red pepper flake. My wife's butternut squash pasta was of a similar tack, as her eyes were rolling back in her head with bliss after each bite. The desserts, though! Absolutely amazing. A chocolate cannoli for Jules, and a caramel smores tartlet for myself rounded out a phenomenal meal, for just about as much as e would have paid at the Warehouse. I had a really wonderful meal here. I can't remember the name of the pasta so forgive me for calling it ravioli which it definitely was not. It was filled with some kind of beef bone marrow and covered in a rich brown sauce. I ate it cold in my hotel room which it did not deserve and it still was the best meal I had all week. The canolli was great too. This place is really cute and serve great food. I was here on business but hell I'd come back to Dayton, Ohio just to eat here again. I have been waiting years for Grist to finally decide to you know, prepare and serve the delicious pastas they've been selling for years. Finally they have a dinner menu. I had the short rib scarpinocc with a bone marrow porcini glaze and it did not disappoint. The serving was big, presentation beautiful, flavors popping!! I had a taste of the lasagna as well and it was great as well, no meat but there was a wonderful cheese sauce. To start, I had the burrata with fruit and argula on warm bread. I was surprised to find the burrata and fruit were served cold which was a miss and disappointing. Not sure I would get that again for that reason. Shared a bottle of wine which they corked at the end to take home. I am so pleased to have another dinner option downtown and it's pasta to boot!! Pasta and bread are all freshly made from scratch with an amazing seasonal/rotating menu, which we enjoy because we go so often to try new dishes. My go-to entree is the tagliatelle alla bolognese--al dente pasta with a rich and flavorful meat sauce with fresh parmigiano reggiano on top. For dessert, they have a bakery style array of treats, ranging from tiramisu, tarts, and cannolis that are light and perfectly sweet. Ambiance is casual yet elegant with beautiful rustic decor. There is an option to order at the counter when you walk in or an online form via QR code. They also offer cooking classes (booking on their website) which I plan to try soon! Absolutely hands down the best restaurant experience. My boyfriend and our two friends and I made reservations and dined on Friday night. We had never been here before but have been wanting to go and let me tell you we were all blown away. We sat next to the Chef cooking the pasta and it was incredible to watch. He spoke to us through out our dining experience and if that wasn't a nice personal touch it was the magic that his hands did with the dishes themselves. We got almost one of every pasta dish and two appetizers. WOW! Delicious. Just mouth watering. Next to add one of the owners came up to our table, Casey, and she talked to us about wine and gave us the run down of everything in the restaurant. She was the sweetest and most humble and I will never forget that. At the end of our meal (mind you it was after close and no one rushed us out they just let us enjoy and watched our souls leave to heaven that night) we opted to purchase dessert in our way out to eat and share together at home. Ugh! The desserts had us melting again. We got cookies, tiramisu, s'mores tart, passion fruit tart and the olive oil cake. So, to some up our dinner it was a 15/10 experience. There is another room that has community tables and an open kitchen. It is quite small, but what they do there is so impressive. I can see this restaurant growing into a larger space if that's something the owner wants. Ok on with the food: Foccacia Beet & citrus salad Octopus Lobster risotto Rabbit I would order every single thing again. The flavors are outstanding and perfectly balanced. They don't just plop some lobster on the risotto... the rice is definitely flavored with seafood stock. It is so good. The rabbit was perfectly cooked and didn't taste gamey at all. The octopus was my favorite thing simply because you don't see it many places and when you do, it's not done right. This was perfection. I used the foccacia to soak up the delicious sauce from the octopus. The beet and citrus salad was bright and perfectly balanced. I will 1000% be back to try everything else on the menu. If this place was close to me I'd eat here all the time, but for now I'll make the hour drive without complaint! This is a must try. read more

One of my new favorite restaurants!! Having lived in Italy for over 4 years, I know good Italian food and this comes as close to being there as anything. The service process is a little unique. You order at the front counter, and then have a seat at a table for your food to be brought to you. A little different than traditional restaurants, but the staff there are extremely helpful and well informed about the menu. The kitchen/prep area is at the back of the dining room so it is a treat to see how the dishes are prepared with such care. They also have a nice wine selection to pare with your meal. We love Grist so much! We travel up from Cincinnati frequently to visit and enjoy the good vibes, and great food! Today I had the Paris Brie sandwich, but their soups and salads are also great. They have a new wonderful meatball sub on homemade bread that is delightful! Too many times meatball subs can make the bread smooshy but Casey and Patrick make their bread fresh and on site so the sandwiches and pasta are *chefs kiss* their desserts are so gorgeous it almost makes it hard to want to eat them but they are just a tasty as they are gorgeous! All in all there are not enough good things we can say about Grist. They have clearly put so much love and attention into making sure this place is great, and each and every time we visit it surpasses our expectations. I'll say it again- we love Grist so much! I've been into Grist both to dine and to attend a cooking class. I highly recommend both expereinces! Everything I've eaten there has been absolutely delicious-from the bread to the salad to the pasta and the pastries! Casey is incredibly friendly and approachable as well as passionate and knowledgable about her field. While attending the cooking class, we were gifted with food education as well as a hands on cooking expereince and to top it all off, were served a delicious meal.
