This review is long overdue! I have been consistently going to Grit and the staff are incredible! Everyone is always willing to help you whether you are new to the studio or a regular. Chelsea is by far my favorite cycle instructor on this planet! I've been going consistently to her classes 2x a week for about 4 months now, and she never fails to kick my ass! The music, the energy, and her constant encouragement is EVERYTHING you want out of a cycle class and instructor. She even helped me face my fears and got me on the podium!! This studio has such a homey vibe! I suggest that you should ride with Chelsea, Dani, Charmaine, and Jaclyn. I live 30 minutes away from this studio, but those instructors are worth the drive. I love Chelsea's class because she teaches riders how to lead with love. Her heart touches my heart and her spirit is amazing. She lights up rooms and inspires people. Sometimes all it takes is a single ray of sunshine to make the whole world seem lighter. And sometimes that ray of sunshine comes in the form of someone like Dani! I feel so much more confident each time I ride with her. Charmaine teaches her rides how to grow from adversity. There aren't enough words to describe how much I appreciate Jaclyn's class. I used to go here a lot back in 2014! It is a good workout but I almost fell over in the dark room today, so I used my phone light to help me so I wouldn't hurt myself. The girl leading me in was not very nice about it - which is the second or third time I've encountered staff that were rude or dismissive toward me. I don't think she needed to be unkind, I can understand she was in a hurry to get me set up but she walks around in that room more than I do and she had an iPad which gave her light to guide her! I thought it was a little inconsiderate. Another reason I will not go anymore is the music uses profane language and one song was about "staying with the devil and getting paid for it" - I'm sorry but I find that really offensive and unpleasant to work out to :( I am looking for a more wholesome family place to go to. This is hands down the best spin class I've ever attended! I've had three different instructors and they are all phenomenal.

I decided to try this studio out after seeing this place pop up on my friends' instagrams a few times. I had my first ride today at Grit cycle with Kris and really enjoyed his class. I usually go to Soulcycle but I like to try out other cycling studios with my ClassPass membership. Kris was enthusiastic throughout the session. His music selection was full of bangers and his choreography was pretty challenging. His choreo consisted of the typical pushups, tap backs, crunches, some climbs and a few sprints, and crunches for single single double. Like Soulcycle, this place is VERY CLIQUEY. I'm not surprised. I go in and out just for the workout and mind my business. However, I decided to stay after class and cool off under the sun because they have a nice porch. In comes three regulars, who I will refer to as Karens, who could not stop talking shit about other riders. They complained how they were unable to keep up to the beat during sprints because they had 4 knobs of resistance to feel the burn and to build strength and how other people in the class were able to keep up because they had two knobs of resistance. If putting down others makes you feel better, do it at your discretion. No one else needs to hear that negativity. And no one is saying you have to have heavy resistance during sprints. It is a sprint for a reason. It's not a hill. If you want to build strength, start powerlifting or something else other than cardio. The studio seems to be pretty great but the community does not seem welcoming. Their classes are a little bit more challenging than other studios in the area and is pretty comparable to Soulcycle. If you want to save a few bucks, I'd recommend coming to GritCycle instead of SoulCycle but if you don't mind the price point and want something more challenging, I would suggest taking Jamie's or Alexa's classes at SoulCycle. read more

The comparison is the thief of joy. As an athletic and adventurous guy, I am always searching for different challenging workouts. If this is your first class, give them a try. I've done road biking and tried other "spin" classes (i.e. Full Psyc, Soul Cycle, YAS), so I was excited when I had the opportunity to try GRIT cycle. This location has been opened since 2013 I believe there are a total of 4 boutique cycling studio that has 4 locations in southern California (Monarch, Long Beach, Anaheim Hills, and Costa Mesa). I'm not sure of the owners' backgrounds (Marissa, Joe, and Matt), but they've created a close community of individuals seeking to improve their fitness and overall well being. Their instructors(about 30?) are very talented with unique personalities, preference on rhythms, weights, songs, core, and leg sequences. I personally enjoyed Reina for her core and slow movements, Lauren for her masterfully selected soundtracks that match challenging movements, and Molly for her bad-ass personality that keeps your heart jumping during hip-hop and rock songs. Other solid choices are also Kris and Matt. +1 for some cool and passionate instructors! Their studio is fairly small but includes a large outdoor waiting area. I think their bikes are fairly standard with no special gadgets compared to others. Most of the bikes are in good condition. However, there was probably 1 or 2 that probably needed tuning because it squeaks! They have Shimano clip-on that is fairly easy to attach and detach. Resistance does not show any numbers so it's based on feel. The aids/employees are usually good at helping you with seat and handle adjustment. There are fans, but some instructors may not turn them on, making the class feel like a sauna. Speakers and sound quality is clear but can be deafening if you're near the walls. Thank goodness for the free earplugs and the cold eucalyptus towel to cool off in the end! +1 star! Cost: Classes are listed as $27 for a class. It's in the average to the high average range. I think this may deter others from trying as their combo packages are also in the $100 to $300 high range. When you're absent and don't cancel in time, you'll also get fined the full cost, I believe. They have some strict policies, but I've seen worse. A big pro is that it is consistently clean and offers complimentary lockers and a shower. I'll come back soon. read more

It was my first class and i do have to say I like it way more than other spin classes I've taken at other studios! Similar concept to Soul cycle, there are no numbers or monitors to compete with (which I hate) Awesome music, standard spin bikes, and refreshing cold eucalyptus towels at the end! The only thing about this studio is that it is very small. Parking can be an issue for sure during the peak hours. There is a shower and some bathroom stalls. I'll have to try out the other locations but this one is convenient because it's right near my work! read more

This review is long overdue. I have been coming to Grit for over five years and never have I experienced a studio that has made me feel so included, accepted and welcome. As a former D-1 athlete, post-college I struggled to find a workout that left me feeling energized, challenged, uplifted and accomplished! I have taken several Grit instructors over the years, and each one has a special gift and unique way of commanding the room. It's rare to see a studio retain so many quality instructors (across several locations) who are genuinely passionate about bringing out the best in others through fitness. Grit continues to maintain the best group of instructors (there are truly too many to name). I believe it's testament to the culture they've created and standards that have been maintained. This week I came back home to Grit after a few months of shelter in place. I happily drove 30 minutes to be able to get into a class in Monarch - despite Costa Mesa being my home studio. I was so impressed by how safe the staff made everyone feel and it was encouraging the see the extra precautions they're taking. The studios are always impeccably clean, but they really are going above and beyond to make everyone comfortable. I have long referred to Grit as my secondary therapy. I remain steadfast in my belief that some classes have healing powers. My boyfriend continued to make fun of me for this comparison (for quite some time), until I dragged him to a class...and now understands the magic! I love grit! However, I would suggest not booking with grit til the day of class. They have a new policy since it was bought out and it's awful. They charge you if you can't make it to the class. I'm not sure I'll be buying more classes here because of the new policy. Tried Grit for the first time after seeing it a bunch of times. I have done spin at different studios and it was very similar to what I'm used to. 45 minutes with mostly fast paced songs and not a lot of resistance. They do have one song that you use weights towards the end. The studio is very clean and offers complimentary lockers and shoes. The only thing I didn't like was that they don't turn fans in throughout the class so by the end it felt like a hot yoga class. They give you a cold towel but it was way too hot for me. In the past year alone, Grit has really gone downhill for me as a longtime rider there. They seem to put more efforts into opening new studios than filling them with great instructors. Yes, it's great for the first-time riders because the set-up, bikes, and overall class structure is fantastic. BUT (and it's a bigggg BUT) I can only attend classes on weekdays at 645 PM and in the past full year of attending 1-2x a week it has been like workout deja vu every. single. time. Can you imagine paying $20+ to do the exact same workout? I could buy the class on DVD for $20 and save myself a lot of frustration. I'd imagine it's because they have a small staff that works multiple locations, but they pull from a pool of about 30 songs for every class. And with the same choreo, same cues, same everything. And I even gave Grit a 2 month break and my close friend said they changed up the music, which meant they swapped maybe 2 songs total. For example, I've done the same arm workout with Kelli for a solid year - starts with overhead pulldowns and chest flys and then a lot of holding your arms out in front of you and pulsing. For OC being so impacted with cycle studios, I would really hope Grit steps up their game to maintain their top spot. I was a huge fan when I first started but I'm definitely missing the spark that was once there. If Grit ever reads this, please invest in pushing your instructors to have new playlists every week heck every MONTH would even be better than what it is now. Amazing energy, the instructs get you pumped. I love coming to this location even though it is like 20-30mins away from my home (depending on traffic). All the instructors have their own unique way of motivating you. The music always gets your adrenaline going and motivated to keep on pushing through even when it gets tough. Right now they have a deal until the end of the month where you can get 5 classes for $75 and I think that is a steal. Plus their monthly unlimited classes is super reasonably priced. I wish I lived closer because I love Grit Cyle. read more

Love this place, especially classes with instructors Kelli, Kaitlin, and Allie. When I first started coming about 6 months ago, it was a little intimidating because everyone seemed so experienced and the classes were a little bit different from the studios I had previously been to (Bike2theBeat, Union Ryde, Freedom Ride). However, it's become my favorite spin studio for the following reasons: - sturdy bikes! (biggest pet peeve is when bikes are unstable and shift around during class) - good sound system - love the instructor's voices - weird thing, I know, but it's important - great amenities (water, mints, lockers, etc.) - awesome instructors/music! My only gripes are that sometimes it can get pretty hot (I try and sit by the fans for this reason), and it's a tad pricier than some of the other studios (but they often have deals, and I also use Classpass). All in all, will keep coming back! read more

I'm a huge fan of GritCycle. I've had a chance to take a few classes by now, with a couple of different instructors. And so far, each class has been a unique experience cause of the instructors! From my first class with Brittany, who is friendly and super helpful but knows how to push you, to the tough as nails Kaitlin who makes you feel like you just climbed Mount Everest every class. (Katie's Class has been a personal favorite of mine!) Honestly what takes it over the edge for me is the GrittyUp classes where they fund raise for different charities. I love a company that gives back! The front desk workers are helpful and informative, and they do their best to help you out. It's not cheap, but it's super worth it and it shows in the details, like with the eucalyptus towels after every class, and the clean bathroom facilities. My biggest complaint is parking (The only reason this gets four stars and not five), but if you give yourself ample time (like more than you think you'll need), you'll be OK. Also, don't park in the Sidecar donuts plaza. Find street parking, and just walk over for a smoothie at Jan's or something afterwards. read more

The instructors make you feel like you can take on the world mentally and physically after each and every class. The classes are amazing!! My only complaint is the staff. They are so unfriendly, unhelpful, and straight up rude. If you ask them a question, they act like you're inconveniencing them and barely answer the question, never looking you in the eye. I suffer from very bad anxiety and every time I go to GritCycle I feel as if I just ended a therapy session. I ABSOLUTELY LOVE IT! It's expensive but it's worth it. They should definitely invest in a bigger bathroom and give the women and men a bit of privacy. We leave the class drenched in sweat the class and it would be nice to shower if there's an opportunity to. They offer eucalyptus towels which feel very very refreshing after class, and their normal towels smell delicious not like Clorox. Front desk girls are extremely nice, helpful and courteous. I love Grit!! I've never cycled before, but my coworkers took me one night and I fell in love with it. My first class was on Monday night with Kelli. Her class was insanely good- super motivational, fast paced, and HOT. Kelli is amazing! She got me really pumped up and ready to tackle the week. My favorite part was when the staff walked around and handed out cold eucalyptus-infused towels right after the class ended. I took my first class here 2 weeks ago (after being introduced by my BFF Monica Gray and... now I wake up feigning for my next Grit Fix. Try as hard as I may I just can't stay away. My family members are planning an intervention. THE FACTS: The sound system is top notch. Music is freaking awesome. Lighting is like a night club. The bikes are clean and new The studio is fresh and pristine. The staff is knowledgable and motivating The extras like cold towels make a difference. Shoes with clips are available. Beginners welcome. Allow extra time for parking. Arrive early. No cell phones or gear in the cycle room The room is warm (even b4 you start) ***** I've taken every type of cardio workout you can imagine. Even though I've been a fitness professional for 25 years and even design and develop group exercise programs and DVD's for health clubs around the globe, Ive never liked cycle. Granted I had only tried about 5 classes, I always felt like you had to ignore the beat and tempo of the music. When I hear a great song I can't help but move! Cycle felt rigid. For someone who actually "feels music" thats torture. Grit cycle actually focuses on the beat! The emphasis is on the intensity and music is the motivator. You pedal and move to the beat and that puts everyone in unison. You feel like a team! Yes!!! My fav instructor so far is Lisa -- Lisa is crazy motivating, you can tell she feels the music in her bones, plays the best mix of house, dub step and rap AND AND she changes the music up a little bit each time. That's HUGE! I'm okay with repeat songs but having a new song or two to look forward to really keeps it fresh!! I also love Matt and Dani. I'm looking forward to trying all of them! For me ALL WORKOUTS are better when the music kicks A$$. Now if you're a hardcore- pure cyclist I'm sure you need neither and staying on the beat dancing a little on your bike might bug you but that's the beauty of GRIT! In fact today I heard a new person after class say she didn't like that people were grooving to the beat on their bikes. I thought, "oh good! Hopefully she won't come back and that's one more bike I can tell a friend about"! For me It's all about using the music, the beat, the lights, the vibe to get into this insane cardio zone. Insane experience. I'm sure I burn a bajillion calories. When you leave you look like you have taken a shower --drenched in sweat. Bring a change of clothes for your drive home. This is the ideal workout to throw into the mix especially if you love cardio but need something easier on the joints. By far, the best indoor cycling gym in the US! If you're on their e-mail list, they will send you Flash Sales for reduced priced packages, however I took one star away because the flash sale packages expire really quickly. I started going to class at Grit a little over a year ago with my ex-boyfriend and his dad, but it wasn't until January that it started changing my life. If you like to sweat, work hard, have a ton of fun, and experience a mental release from everyday stressors, check this studio out! Matt Bourne's class is what did it for me. Having taken many fitness instructors, spin in particular, I believe the best instructors possess the perfect balance between motivation and a challenging class structure. Matt nails it. I've never been to his class without leaving a pool of sweat under my bike and feeling happier and ready to conquer any challenge thrown my way. (Note: he keeps his class HOT-- this may not be for everyone!!) Recently I took some time off of spin to pursue other goals and test different methods of working out. I have taken various yoga classes, barre, done Pilates, and am an avid runner. I still believe a spin class at Grit is the best workout in OC. Coming back I can appreciate class even more for its level of difficulty and the way it has motivated me in other aspects of my life, such as having greater self confidence and the ability to motivate myself during endurance tests such as the long runs I go on to train for races. Other great instructors at Grit are Lisa-- her motivation, energy, and encouragement are off the charts, Dani-- if you enjoy faster beat songs, definitely check out her class, and Cassie-- she will kick your booty every class with the right resistance on the bike! The girls at the front desk are extremely friendly and helpful! I have become friends with some of them outside of the studio. The amenities are fantastic- clean towels on every bike, a shower with fresh towels, shampoo, soap, etc., and lockers to store your belongings during class! Of the four local indoor spin studios I tried, GritCycle is favorite! I tried my first class through ClassPass. I signed up for a 6:45 p.m. class on a Wednesday evening with Morgan. GritCycle is very similar to SoulCycle - dark room, loud music, fast movements. I arrived early and the parking lot was very full. There's a small front desk area filled with GritCycle-branded merchandise. There are lockers and a shower available on the other side. The class was packed! I noticed only a few empty bikes. The room was pretty dark and warm the entire ride. Morgan was super energetic & friendly. I loved her playlist! read more
