On 5 15 25 my family and I ate at Grits Grill as we were spending the night in the outer banks. This was one of the nastiest places I have ever eaten. The floor was filthy, one bathroom was working it was filthy. Flies were flying around our food while we were trying to eat. I got a chefs salad I could not even eat the whole thing the ham was extremely fatty. My wife got shrimp and grits and hardly ate any of it. I would not recommend this place!! read more

This place was my Granddad's favorite breakfast spot, it holds a special place in my heart. He has since passed but me and him would always order the same thing of 2 fried eggs, grits with butter, country ham, and toast or an English muffin. Everything was delicious and I never had a fried egg cooked out of the temp I wanted. Service was amazing they would refill your drinks practically as soon as you finished them. The atmosphere is classic diner and is super cute. Highly recommend this place for your standard American breakfast. read more

Good gravy what a breakfast. Some of the biggest biscuits I've ever seen. I had the shrimp and grits. A different take on it with a dollop of gravy in the middle. We stopped just before lunchtime but everyone ordered standard breakfast plates - pancakes, biscuits gravy, bacon egg cheese biscuit, etc. Our waitress was lovely and friendly, and the decor is cute with a beach diner vibe. The food was on par with standard breakfast chains - however the biscuit was dry and crumbly, the gravy was package stuff, pancakes slightly burnt, for example. When we got into town and we tried to find a place that we could sit down and eat. This was pretty much our only option within the immediate area. We were not disappointed though. It was setup like a diner and the food was delicious. We both ordered breakfast. I ordered cornbeef hash and an egg and my husband ordered biscuits and gravy and hashbrowns. The hash was cooked in a circle and crispy on the outside but soft on the inside. My husband said his biscuits and gravy had a really good flavor and the hashbrowns were crispy with a nice crunch. This is a popular breakfast destination in Nags Head. We had a short wait for a table because it was crowded on a Thursday morning. Service was friendly and quick. They have pretty typical diner breakfast fare and the prices were fair. I decided to order the corned beef hash. You can either choose hash browns or grits. I'm not a huge grits person, so I decided to order hash browns and got a side of grits just to give them a try. The side of grits was HUGE. I was expecting the smaller side bowl that came with the meals, but it was a bigger size bowl. They were pretty tasty. The wrong order was brought to me at first, but was rectified quickly. I do not recommend if you are a minority. My husband and I walked into the establishment and were immediately greeted by a host, who quickly seated us. After being seated, we sat there for 10 mins waiting for a waiter to at least ask us what we would like to drink. Granted it was a busy Saturday morning, so we were patient. The two waiters in the section were friendly (saying hello, checking in to see if customers needed anything else) to ALL OTHER PATRONS EXCEPT my husband and I (we are black), and the Hispanic family across from us. At the 10minute mark, 2 gentlemen were seated right next to us. They were IMMEDIATELY asked for their drink order and the waitress immediately went to go retrieve their drinks. At that point my husband and I walked out. My husband and I went to another restaurant down the street, who were great! ALL OF THE DUNES RESTAURANT STAFF was EQUALLY friendly to ALL customers and attentive. To the owner of the "THE GRITS GRILL", it should not matter what your customers look like, they are intending to pay for your food! I refuse to support a place who has employees who are so purposefully discriminatory and bias. AND BEFORE YOU SAY, "we have black employees", I question how they are treated in your establishment by the other staff. read more

Had brunch here today. Mary-Beth was the server. She made us feel very rushed- not very friendly really. Food ok, but could not get our fried eggs right. Mary-Beth told us the chef can only do hard or really soft eggs. No medium eggs available- although we showed her a picture of a medium egg- not runny but soft. Western omelette- not much ham and mushrooms in, lots of onion and peppers ( cheaper ingredients) coffee good and hot cakes good. Probably our first and last time. Interesting local place similar to chain waffle places. Fresh local seafood specials and a small-town feel. Food was plentiful, if not particularly well-seasoned. I had a seafood omelet that was full of bland shrimp and very tasty crabmeat. Partner had a "Belgian" waffle that she said was false advertising, since it didn't really have the deep holes and special batter usually associated with that country, but the flavor was good, and the eggs and bacon made for a very filling brunch. The weak coffee was really the only down side. Service was fast and friendly, and sitting at the bar, we got to watch all the food being prepared. Well worth a return visit, but you may want to BYO coffee. read more

Sooo happy! We come to OBX yearly, and always enjoy a breakfast at Grits Grill, but this year I came twice in one week after discovering Funnel Cake Fries!! They are like being at the state fair...you will be so happy, as I was and returned for more. Both mornings we had great service, from Alicja and then Sandy. My first meal was Kiss My Grits, a good plate of eggs, bacon and hotcakes. Today I had a wonderful huge freshly made biscuit with bacon, egg and cheese, so delicious... in the mountains they would call this a "cathead" biscuit, because it is as big as the head of a cat! And the cup of fruit:grapes, orange and berries, was delicious. I do like this little nook because of the good food and service; they serve breakfast all day, til close at 2pm. read more

The shrimp and grits were the best I've ever had, and I'm not saying that lightly. With white sawmill sausage gravy, bacon, onions, and scallions (and some shredded cheese!), these grits were cooked and flavored to PERFECTION. Even my mom's plain grits were seasoned just right-- you can taste that they were made by someone who KNOWS how to make grits. Their hash browns also deserve a shout out-- cooked with onions and fried on the flat top, these crispy hash browns are cooked and seasoned to Grits Grill's one and only taste. Cute 50's style diner serving the classics! They seem to be a bit short staffed right now and have a warning on the door asking for customers patience and understanding. This diner turns out some really satisfying breakfast food. The grits are legit -- they're excellent. The waffles are good. The staff is friendly and efficient. My coffee cup never went without a quick and courteous refill. That said, prices seemed high for the diner fare, especially for the simpler breakfast items... but I guess that's par for the course in OBX and the costs for food have gone up everywhere. This is a definitely a breakfast restaurant we'll revisit next time we're in town. read more

Perhaps my expectations were too high for their namesake, but the grits were pretty average-- moderately glutinous with a touch of butter. I was surprised to note that the toast was more aggressively buttered in comparison. Eggs cooked nicely to order even if the steak was a touch over. Ham with a touch of gristle, pancakes reasonably fluffy, coffee not atrocious. We were seduced by the Eastern Carolina BBQ sandwich on special but it was a little dry and lacking in flavor. Biscuit reminded me of Popeye's. Beans were sweet with a hint of meat, potato leek soup of the day was thick and shy on seasoning. Three and a half stars. Tons of parking in the shared plaza, and equally plentiful seating. Bathrooms towards the left were fairly clean. Hits the spot but nothing to write home about. read more

Went based on a recommendation from a family member. Great diner feel and good, solid breakfast food. The grits were creamy and so delicious I actually stole half of my husband's bowl. The Belgian waffle is huge with a nice crisp outside and soft, fluffy center. All the portions were generous. Very good value for the amount of food you get. It's early in the day and you're cruisin' along "The Croatan Highway" otherwise known as "The Bypass." Somewhere near MilePost 14 (that's how the locals locate a place along the OBX) you get a hankerin' for breakfast, maybe a big breakfast. Well, don't go west young man even if the music suggests you can get your "kicks on Route 66." Instead, turn into the parking lot at the Outer Banks Mall and "get your fill at Nags Head's Grits Grill." They advertise breakfast "all day long" which means from open at 6:00 in the morning until close at 2:00 in the afternoon...so not quite all day. Don't be surprised if you have to wait in line because this IS a popular place with locals and tourists alike. Wait staff hustles and bustles with friendly chatter and great service for everyone, checking and refilling drinks and making sure all is to your liking. The grub: downright good homemade food. I've tried many of Grits Grill's breakfast items and have never been disappointed - from eggs, moist and beautifully scrambled, to fried-just-right, to easy over or sunny-side-up. I've had their bacon, sausage, and sausage gravy. Most recently I had their creamed-chip beef on a big, tender and flavorful buttermilk biscuit. (The chipped beef was generous in the serving portion - see pic I posted with my check-in) but it was a tad just short on flavor--just a bit bland. The hash browns were cooked to perfection with a great, beautifully browned crunchy crust and creamy potato interior. Delicious, but a bit too strong on aroma of the onion (reminded me of a regular white rather than a sweet Vidalia or Mayan). Flavor was still great. Grits....yes, the grits are great: cream, buttery, and served steaming hot. Lots more to choose from for lunch or brunch, but breakfast is my meal of choice here. (I was sorry to read some of the few negative comments by a few reviewers. Their experiences simply have not been mine or those of my family and friends who've eaten here. So I highly recommend that you try Grits Grill and see for yourself.) read more
